Last year, Habitat La Crosse undertook an ambitious build to provide two deserving local veterans and their families with new affordable homes. The project was sponsored by area VFW and American Legion posts.

Skilled volunteers with military experience worked alongside the partner families to construct two three-bedroom homes with accessible features. The open floor plans included spacious great rooms and large kitchens. Exteriors featured maintenance-free siding and metal roofs.

Both homes had a patriotic-themed dedication ceremony attended by veterans groups, volunteers, donors and community members. The new homeowners received the keys to their homes right before Veteran’s Day, providing them with stability and an uplifting sense of accomplishment.

Women Build 2021

In spring 2021, Habitat La Crosse organized their third-annual Women Build event. Female volunteers from across the community came together to help build a home for Melissa, a hard-working single mother of three.

Around 200 women volunteered their time over the 3-month construction period. Some were experienced tradeswomen who could guide and mentor novice volunteers. Students, office workers, retirees, girl scout troops, and mother-daughter duos also participated.

The three-bedroom, two-bath home featured an open kitchen and living room perfect for a bustling family. Melissa and her children were thrilled to pick out interior finishes like cabinetry, flooring and paint colors.

Working alongside Melissa and seeing her family’s joy at the home dedication was incredibly uplifting for all the Women Build volunteers. The event built connections between women of all ages and backgrounds.

Faith Build 2022

This summer, Habitat La Crosse has been working on a Faith Build home sponsored by a coalition of local churches and parishes. Construction relies on volunteer labor from church congregation members.

The Faith Build home will go to the Edwards family, who have faced housing insecurity and steep rent increases while raising two young daughters. Their new three-bedroom Habitat home will provide welcome stability.
