Joel Tinney rewrote the Hopkins and NCAA record books as an elite face-off man and scorer. After winning a national title with the Blue Jays, Tinney now starts at midfield for defending champs Maryland.
Zach Palmer was an attacking force who earned First Team All-American status with the Blue Jays. After Hopkins, Palmer starred in the MLL and now plays for Chaos LC in the PLL as one of the league’s top scorers.
The pipeline from Hopkins to high-level college and pro lacrosse success remains strong. These standouts continue to make their mark after excelling as Blue Jays.
Hopkins Lacrosse 2023 Season Preview and Predictions
With the 2023 Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse season on the horizon, it’s time to break down the Blue Jays’ outlook. After falling short of championship expectations last spring, Hopkins eyes a return to title contention this year.
Hopkins’ potent offense will be led by senior attackman Cole Williams, who’s primed for a huge year as the team’s primary scoring threat. Junior Joey Epstein is an elite facilitator at midfield who makes the offense hum. Face-off dominance from Trevor Sisto provides Hopkins with ample possession and transition chances.
Defensively, senior long-stick midfielder Austin Henningsen is the anchor. Sophomore goalie Josh Kirson builds off a breakout freshman campaign. This unit should take a step forward after gaining experience last season.
With a manageable schedule, Hopkins has the talent to make serious noise in the Big Ten and nationally. But they can’t overlook any opponents. Key games will be conference battles with Maryland and Rutgers, and the rivalry showdown against Syracuse.
If Cole Williams reaches his potential as a dominant scorer, Joey Epstein continues excelling as a playmaker, face-offs are won, and team defense tightens up, Hopkins has the pieces to contend for a title run. This senior-led group is motivated after last year’s early NCAA exit.
Look for Hopkins to recapture some of their championship magic in 2023. The Blue Jays will push for the Big Ten crown and make a deep run into Memorial Day weekend as a legitimate national championship threat once again.
