The dog days of summer are upon us, which can only mean one thing for Minnesota soccer fans—it’s time to pack into Allianz Field and cheer on our Loons! The team recently released their 2023 home schedule, spotlighting plenty of must-see matchups against top competition from both conferences. One interconference clash especially worth circling is the mid-August showdown against the Columbus Crew.

The Loons will be hungry for revenge when Columbus comes to town on August 12th. Last season, the Crew dealt our squad a crushing 2-0 road loss which severely hampered Minnesota’s playoff push. Powered by playmaker Lucas Zelarayan and poacher Cucho Hernandez up top, the Columbus attack blitzed the Loons back line all match long.

With both Zelarayan and Hernandez back in black and gold this season, the Crew attack promises to challenge Minnesota once again. However, the Loons now boast reinforcements along the back line, including newly acquired Brazilian center back Igor Gomes. His aerial presence should provide an antidote to the 5’6” Hernandez’s crafty movement and finishing inside the box.
