Tour Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio in Spring Green
As the leaves start changing color and the temperatures cool down, fall is a fantastic time to get out of the city for a day and explore some of the cultural and natural wonders within driving distance of Chicago. One of my personal favorite fall day trips is to visit Taliesin, the home and studio of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, located in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The scenic 2.5 hour drive northwest of Chicago passes through classic Midwestern farm country.
Nestled into the rolling hills of the Wisconsin River valley, Taliesin was Wright’s home for most of his life and the place where he designed many of his most famous buildings. Taking a tour of Taliesin provides fascinating insight into Wright’s unique Prairie School architectural style and philosophy of “organic architecture”, which emphasized harmony between buildings and nature. On the tour, you’ll get to see Wright’s two homes, his studio, private living quarters, various gardens and terraces, and the Hillside School which he established on-site to train apprentices.
In addition to tours, Taliesin offers a variety of special events and activities in the fall. You can take part in the annual Fall Gathering, with live music, food and wine tastings by area vendors. Or attend a theatrical performance at the Hillside Theater, where Wright himself once watched his apprentices perform. There are also behind-the-scenes landscape tours focusing on Taliesin’s gardens and farm, as well as the option to do a night tour of the estate.
To complete the Frank Lloyd Wright theme, I like to also stop and check out the architect’s other famous building in the area, the Monona Terrace Convention Center in downtown Madison, on the drive back to Chicago. The curving structure echoes Wright’s love of circular motifs, and provides sweeping panoramic views of Lake Monona. After a refreshing scenic drive, fascinating architectural tour, and peek at one of Wright’s other masterpieces, this makes for an ideal full day architecture-themed trip close to Chicago for fall.

See rare bird species at Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge
As the leaves start changing colors and the temperatures begin to drop, fall is one of the best times to get out and explore areas just outside of Chicago. Bryn Walker, a Chicago-based travel blogger, put together a list of her top 15 favorite day trips that make for perfect fall adventures. One such destination is Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin, which is about two hours northwest of the Windy City.
Horicon Marsh covers approximately 32,000 acres, providing critical habitat for hundreds of bird species. In fact, the marsh is considered one of the largest freshwater cattail marshes in the United States. It’s especially known for the tens of thousands of Canada geese that stop over during migration seasons in the spring and fall. You’re almost guaranteed to spot flocks of geese honking overhead or foraging in the shallow waters.
Aside from geese, keep an eye out for endangered bird species like the whooping crane, sandhill crane, and trumpeter swan. Fall is when populations of these rare birds peak as they pass through Horicon on their seasonal migrations. With a pair of binoculars and a bird guide, you’ll be able to identify and admire these incredible avians.
There are a few ways to explore Horicon Marsh. You can hike various nature trails that wind through wetland areas, forests, and prairies. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes or boots that can handle muddy conditions. The Blue Heron Trail is a nice 2.4 mile loop that takes you along the marsh’s edge.
Paddling the marsh by canoe or kayak allows you to spot birds from unique vantage points. There are a number of canoe liveries located around the refuge that rent equipment. You can also join guided canoe tours if you prefer to paddle with an experienced naturalist. Expect to see herons, egrets, ducks, and red-winged blackbirds along the shoreline.
Driving the auto tour route is another excellent way to cover a lot of ground in the refuge. Make occasional stops at overlooks and observation decks perfect for wildlife viewing with spotting scopes or binoculars. Fall is an optimal time to catch migrating raptors like hawks, eagles, and falcons circling above.
Keep in mind that entrance into Horicon Marsh does require an entrance pass, which you can acquire at the visitor center. I recommend stopping here first anyway to browse the educational exhibits and chat with knowledgeable park rangers who can point you toward recent wildlife sightings.
Horicon Marsh is about a two hour drive from Chicago, making it very feasible as a day trip. I’d recommend an early start to take advantage of mornings when wildlife activity peaks. Pack a picnic lunch, binoculars, field guides, and cameras to capture those seasonal migration sightings!
Travel Tips for Visiting Horicon Marsh:
- Visit in spring or fall migration seasons for peak bird populations
- Stop at the visitor center to purchase an entrance pass and get tips from rangers
- Hike trails, paddle by boat, or drive the auto tour route
- Look for endangered birds like whooping cranes and trumpeter swans
- Bring binoculars, field guides, lunch, and cameras
Horicon Marsh comes highly recommended for nature lovers, bird watchers, or anyone looking to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of fall. With an abundance of hiking trails, paddling routes, and observational overlooks, you’re sure to have a memorable experience spotting rare species stopping over during migration. It makes for the perfect day trip adventure from Chicago this autumn.
What are you waiting for? Grab your binoculars, pack a thermos of hot apple cider, and head to Horicon Marsh this fall to see magnificent birds in their peak migratory populations. Let’s embrace the crisp air, fiery foliage, and gift of witnessing nature’s seasonal transition together! I bet you’ll spot some incredible avian species while reconnecting with the outdoors.
Explore the Dells of the Wisconsin River on a scenic boat tour
As Bryn Walker notes in her roundup of top fall day trips from Chicago, one adventure not to miss is taking a boat tour through the magnificent Dells of the Wisconsin River. Nestled in south-central Wisconsin, the Dells region is known for its breathtaking sandstone rock formations carved out by the winding Wisconsin River over 12,000 years ago.
While summer draws more crowds, fall is actually an ideal time to experience the Dells. The temperatures are cooler, the fall foliage presents a dazzling backdrop, and the boat tours are less crowded. You can embark on a scenic cruise taking in the vibrant autumn scenery along towering cliffs and rock formations with names like Romance Cliff, Devil’s Elbow, and Stand Rock.
Several outfitters like Dells Boat Tours offer a range of cruise options from quick one-hour tours to half-day excursions. For a more in-depth experience, I recommend reserving a two-hour Upper or Lower Dells tour. This gives you ample time to marvel at the dramatic rock formations, churning rapids, and tranquil dells along different stretches of the river.
Another cool way to tour the Dells is via duck boat, which can traverse both land and water. The Original Wisconsin Ducks take you on a fascinating journey down the Wisconsin River before driving along nearby roads to see other attractions like Circus World Museum. It provides a fun and unique vantage point of the Dells!
If you want a more adventurous ride, book a jet boat tour. These speedy boats whip through narrow rock formations and splash through surging rapids. The Canyon Cruise with WildThing Jetboats is a wet and wild 45-minute thrill ride through the Dells sure to get your adrenaline pumping!
Beyond scenic cruises, I recommend budgeting some time to walk down Broadway in the downtown Dells area after your boat tour. You’ll find lots of restaurants, fudge shops, and kitschy attractions that capture the charm and history of this quintessential Wisconsin tourist town.
The brilliant fall colors reflecting off the Wisconsin River provide postcard-worthy views. Capture the scenic landscape by snapping photos from observation decks or right from the boat. Fall is less crowded with mostly weekend traffic, so you won’t have to vie for the perfect photo op!
If time allows, tack on a hike through nearby Mirror Lake State Park to immerse yourself in the autumn woods. A boat tour showcasing the Dells combined with a peaceful nature walk lets you experience the region’s beauty from water and land.
However you choose to cruise through the iconic Dells, you’re guaranteed breathtaking views of the rock formations set against a backdrop of fall foliage. It makes for a picturesque and affordable day trip from Chicago that feels worlds away yet is just a few hours northwest. Take to the river this fall and admire the Dells in their full autumn splendor!
Tips for Visiting the Dells in Fall:
- Book a scenic cruise or adventurous jet boat tour
- Walk downtown Dells to shop, eat, and take in sights

Learn about glacial geology at Cave of the Mounds National Natural Landmark
As the leaves start changing colors and the crisp autumn air arrives, it’s the perfect time for a day trip adventure from Chicago. One fascinating and educational option is a visit to Cave of the Mounds National Natural Landmark near Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. This national landmark features beautiful limestone cave formations created by glaciers over a million years ago.
A guided tour takes you deep below the earth to see stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone deposits, and fractured limestone. As you descend down the stairs into the cave, the temperature drops to a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Your experienced guide will point out unique cave features and explain how they were formed by mineral deposits from dripping groundwater. See the intricate Spool and Thread formation, made from calcite hanging down like lacework. Marvel at the Giant’s Ribcage, made of enormous stalactites that resemble the bones of a dinosaur. The geology behind Cave of the Mounds is fascinating. Around 1.2 million years ago, during the Pleistocene Epoch, a glacier carved out the area that is now the cave. When the glacier melted, cracks formed in the limestone bedrock, allowing water to seep down and dissolve portions of the rock. This created the caves, tunnels, and distinctive formations seen today. Going on a tour really helps visualize the powerful geological forces that shaped the cave over millennia. It’s an underground classroom for learning about the last ice age.
Make sure to walk through the Exhibit Hall before or after your cave tour. Displays explain how the cave was discovered, the process of cave formation, and the unique flora and fauna found inside. Kids will love the hands-on learning stations and games. Stop by the Gemstone Exhibit to see glowing geodes, crystallized quartz, and precious gemstones from all over the world.
Cave of the Mounds is located at 2975 Cave of the Mounds Road in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, less than a 3 hour drive from Chicago. Tours run between May and October. Extended tour options allow you to explore deeper into the cave to see areas like the Volcano Room, with melted rock that looks like flowing lava. For a truly memorable experience, book the special lantern tour offered on select weekends. Following the soft glow of lanterns across uneven cave floors really transports you back in time.
Whether you’re interested in geology, natural wonders, or just getting off the beaten path, a fall trip to Cave of the Mounds is an easy, educational day from Chicago. Wear sturdy shoes to navigate the 100 stairs down into the cave and be prepared for chilly subterranean temperatures.
