Wheelchair Accessibility

The Overture Center was designed with wheelchair users in mind. All three of its performance spaces – Overture Hall, Capitol Theater and The Playhouse – offer wheelchair-accessible seating areas with excellent views of the stage. These wheelchair seating areas are available at various ticket price points so patrons can choose the seats that fit their budget.

In addition, the Overture Center has 32 wheelchair-accessible restrooms, extra-wide doors and elevators to access all levels. Complimentary wheelchairs are also available upon request if patrons have difficulty navigating the venue. Ushers receive training on assisting patrons with mobility limitations.

Hearing Assistance

Patrons with hearing loss have several options when attending events at Overture Center. Both Overture Hall and Capitol Theater are equipped with hearing loop assistive listening systems that connect directly to hearing aids or cochlear implants with telecoils. For patrons without hearing devices, the Overture Center has receivers and headsets available to provide amplified sound.

The Overture Center offers American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for select performances. Interpreted shows are clearly indicated when purchasing tickets online or speaking with an Overture Center representative. Patrons can request seating with an optimal view of the interpreters.

Vision Impairments

Patrons with low vision or who are blind can still appreciate the performing arts at the Overture Center. Large print programs are available at guest services to augment the experience. Service animals are also welcome inside the theaters.

Some performances feature live audio description services in which a narrator provides commentary and sensory details during breaks in dialogue. This allows those with vision impairments to better understand the staging and visual components. Additionally, touch tours are occasionally available before shows to explore the set, costumes and props by touch.

Relaxed rules create an accepting environment for those who benefit from the adjustments. Special pre-show activities introduce children to the characters and music as well. Sensory bags containing noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools and more are available to borrow free of charge.

Service Animals

Trained service animals are allowed inside Overture Center theaters to assist patrons with disabilities. When purchasing tickets, patrons should indicate they will be accompanied by a service animal so the staff can prepare. All service animals must be harnessed, leashed or tethered unless those devices interfere with their work. Owners should keep their service animal under control at all times.

Companion Seating

Many patrons with disabilities require the assistance of a companion when attending events. The Overture Center offers companion seating so a friend, family member or caregiver can sit next to the patron who requires aid. Simply request companion seating when purchasing tickets.

If a patron already purchased non-companion tickets, the Overture Center box office can work to exchange their seats for ones together. This ensures proper assistance can be provided in an inclusive environment.

Quiet Spaces

For some individuals, the crowds, noise and commotion of a busy performing arts venue can become overwhelming. The Overture Center offers quiet spaces where patrons can take a break and decompress during an event. These spaces have comfortable seating, muted lighting and activities like colored pencils and books for a much-needed sensory retreat.

Taking advantage of the Overture Center’s variety of accessibility services allows those with disabilities or special needs to take part in the same world-class entertainment as other patrons. With open communication and proactive accommodations, the arts can be appreciated by all.

COVID Safety Protocols at the Overture Center

The Overture Center for the Arts in downtown Madison takes the health and safety of its staff, performers and patrons very seriously. As the premier venue for world-class entertainment in Wisconsin, implementing diligent COVID-19 protocols allows the shows to go on safely and responsibly.

Vaccination Requirements

In accordance with public health recommendations, all patrons aged 12 and older must show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to enter the Overture Center. Valid forms of proof include a physical vaccination card, digital photo of the card, or the official vaccination record from an immunization registry. Security personnel verify vaccination status at all entry points.

For patrons who are not fully vaccinated due to age, medical condition or sincerely held religious belief, proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken within 72 hours of the performance is required. The Overture Center also accepts school testing records for unvaccinated minors as sufficient proof of a negative result.

Mask Policy

Masks covering the nose and mouth are required at all times inside the Overture Center, regardless of vaccination status. Acceptable masks include disposable surgical masks, KN95s, cloth masks with multiple layers of fabric or gaiters in accordance with CDC guidelines. Masks may only be removed briefly for eating or drinking in designated locations.

Based on current public health conditions in Madison and Dane County, this universal masking policy provides an important layer of protection for patrons at Overture Center events. Signage inside the venues reminds attendees to keep masks on unless actively eating or drinking.

Enhanced Air Filtration

Experts agree that improving ventilation and air exchange helps mitigate the risk of virus transmission indoors. As such, the Overture Center has invested in upgrades to its heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems throughout the venues.

State-of-the-art air filters MERV-13 or higher are used to capture aerosol particles and prevent recirculation. Increased fresh air intake and air exchanges per hour dilute any potential contaminants. Adjustments to temperature and humidity levels also help control spread.

The Overture Center has strict sanitization protocols before, during and after all public events. High-touch surfaces like door handles, chairs, railings and countertops are frequently wiped down and disinfected with EPA-registered products proven effective against the virus that causes COVID-19.

Restrooms are checked and cleaned multiple times per show. Hand sanitizer stations are conveniently placed throughout the lobbies, hallways, entrances and theater areas. Disinfectant wipes and gloves are also provided for patrons to use at their discretion.

Contactless Transactions
