One of my first stops was Malaprop’s Bookstore, an inviting indie book shop and a staple of Asheville’s downtown. From the enormous range of books by local authors to the cozy upstairs cafe, Malaprop’s is the perfect place to peruse books while soaking up the literary vibe. I could have spent hours browsing their shelves, which include a wonderful selection of books on Appalachian history and culture.

For vintage clothing and accessories, I was thrilled to uncover Static Age Records. They have an awesome collection of used records, but I was drawn in by their back section overflowing with vibrant clothes and accessories from past decades. I ended up chatting with the friendly owner for nearly an hour and left with a handful of retro North Carolina-themed t-shirts I found in a bin.

No visit to Asheville is complete without a stop at Mast General Store, the famous country store that’s been around since the late 1800s. From glass soda bottles to old-timey candy to hiking gear, Mast General Store is jam-packed with vintage and outdoorsy items that really capture Asheville’s spirit. For a truly unique Asheville experience, a must-visit is Horse and Hero, the shop attached to Greystone Movie Tavern that specializes in film-inspired oddities and collectibles. I could have spent a small fortune on their superhero figurines, vintage film posters, quirky barware, and other pop culture memorabilia. I settled on a Moonrise Kingdom print and Pulp Fiction coffee mug as the perfect eclectic Asheville souvenirs.

At Curve Studios, I marveled at everything from pottery to paintings to metalwork by local creators as I chatted with artists in their workshops. Hike in Pisgah National Forest

As an avid hiker visiting North Carolina from Boston, I was thrilled to discover the incredible hiking trails and scenic vistas of Pisgah National Forest. Spanning over 500,000 acres of rugged Appalachian terrain, Pisgah offers some of the best hiking in the eastern U.S. for Bostonians seeking majestic mountain landscapes. With hundreds of miles of trails to explore, it can be overwhelming to choose where to start. Here are some of my favorite hikes and sights I was able to experience during my adventures in this western North Carolina wilderness as a Boston hiker.

For a quintessential Pisgah hike and one of the best sunrise views in the area, I headed to Max Patch in the northern region of the forest. The relatively short but steep 3.6 mile roundtrip hike leads through grassy Appalachian balds to a 360-degree panorama at the summit of Max Patch. Watching the sea of mountains bathed in morning light from this grassy dome was breathtaking. For another iconic panoramic view, I drove the winding route to the top of Mt. Pisgah and was rewarded with a stellar view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Balsam peaks.

Seeking a variety of landscapes, I laced up my boots and trekked along the Middle Prong Trail to view the stunning 200-foot cascades of waterfalls along the Middle Prong River. This 8 mile out-and-back trail follows the river through verdant old-growth forests and past several roaring waterfalls, providing a perfect taste of the pristine wilderness in Pisgah. For a shorter hike along the water, I did the moderate 2.2 mile loop hike to Moore Cove Falls which plunges 50 feet into a punchbowl basin surrounded by mosses and ferns.

Some of my favorite moments were spent leisurely wandering the quiet, lush trails like the Easy Bent Creek Loop, ideal for Bostonians seeking a mellow immersion in Pisgah’s ancient woods. I also loved exploring the historic and challenging trails used by pioneers like the Forks of the River Trail, Old Turnpike Trail and Big Butt Trail. Walking in the footsteps of the Cherokee along the trails used by native peoples for centuries was a moving experience.

No visit to Pisgah is complete without experiencing the majesty of waterfalls along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway. The Graveyard Fields area delivers with the towering cascades of Yellowstone and Devil’s Courthouse waterfalls, accessed by short hikes. For a longer adventure, the steep but breathtaking hike to Skinny Dip Falls is worth every step, passing high overlooks on the way to an isolated cascade.

After the exhilaration of waterfall hikes, I relaxed by fishing in the Davidson River or tubing down the French Broad River as the perfect way to unwind after long days on the trails. Nothing caps off a day of hiking like enjoying an inventory beer and a juicy burger at one of Asheville’s breweries, where I swapped stories with friendly locals and fellow Boston hikers.

With endless miles of trails showcasing raging waterfalls, old-growth forests, historic homesteads, and stunning vistas, Pisgah National Forest exceeded my expectations for hiking and natural wonders as a Bostonian visitor. I returned home with a camera full of incredible memories and a desire to explore every corner of this western North Carolina wilderness.
