Lightness and rigidity may seem like contradictory goals – but not with Under Armour’s advanced composite engineering.
A featherlight shaft allows for quick maneuvers, fast transitions, and reduced fatigue over a grueling 60-minute game. Nothing slows down a player like an overweight stick.
But rigidity is equally crucial for efficient power transfer into checks, passes, and shots. Without proper stiffness, energy bleeds off flexing rather than transferring into the ball.
Under Armour strikes this delicate balance between mass reduction and rigidity enhancement. Their shafts play light as a feather but deliver uncompromising stiffness when needed.
Maintaining quickness and control
Even an extra ounce or two of mass can take the pep out of a player’s step over the course of a game. All those small movements between sprints add up.
By keeping weight down to 5-7 ounces for elite carbon models, Under Armour maintains cat-like quickness, responsiveness, and control throughout games.
Reducing fatigue
Less mass also means less fatigue, especially for endurance-intensive positions like midfield. Under Armour engineers their shafts to avoid tiring out players’ arms.
Throwing checks, cradling, and passing requires fitness. Minimizing shaft weight helps players sustain intensity even in the fourth quarter when stamina matters most.
Stiffness for power
Then there’s stiffness. While lightness caters to finesse, stiffness unlocks power.
Under Armour’s rigid yet lightweight shafts transfer all of a player’s muscular energy straight into the head without wasting any flexing. The result is maximum velocity on shots, increased poke check aggressiveness, and pinpoint passing.
Weight savings add up
Saving just an ounce or two may not seem significant, but it all adds up over a game. Under Armour squeezes every fraction of an ounce from their shafts without compromising performance. This obsessive light weighting gives their shafts a noticeable quickness edge.
In a game of milliseconds and millimeters, even the smallest weight reduction matters. Under Armour leverages every engineering tool needed to shave weight without sacrificing rigidity.

No matter your budget or skill level, Under Armour has a thoughtfully constructed lacrosse shaft to enhance your game. Their innovative materials and relentless engineering shine through across price points.
By leveraging technology trickling down from their elite-performance models, even UA’s most affordable shafts pack serious performance potential.
The lacrosse gear market is filled with big brands all vying to engineer the next great shaft. Under Armour stands tall against the top competitors with their relentless innovation and focus on materials and construction.
Comparison to competitor lacrosse shafts on the market
Under Armour shafts go head-to-head with leading brands like Maverik, STX, and Warrior. Here’s how UA stacks up:
Lightweight construction
When it comes to cutting weight without losing performance, no one does it quite like Under Armour. Their ultra-premium carbon shafts dip under 5 oz fully strung – practically impossibly light.
Competitors using similar composites still struggle to get under 6 oz. Under Armour leads the pack when engineers look to shed every possible gram.
Strength and durability
Despite being incredibly lightweight, UA shafts also stand up to heavy abuse. Their aerospace-grade carbon and titanium can withstand impacts and drops that would shatter lesser shafts.
Under Armour proves you can have both insane lightness along with brawny durability – a tough proposition for other brands still playing catchup.
Advanced grip textures
Under Armour also obsesses over grip texture design. Using proprietary tactile coatings molded directly into their shafts, they enhance handling in all conditions.
Competitors stick to basic matte coatings that lose traction when wet. UA’s next-gen grip texturing provides an all-weather performance advantage.
Balanced tuning
While specs are crucial, Under Armour also sweats the subtle design details that separate good from phenomenal. Aspects like balance point, flex distribution, and ergonomic shape tuning set their shafts apart.
Under Armour accounts for the nuances missed by competitors. This holistic design approach creates shafts unmatched on the field.
Pushing the pace of innovation
Under Armour refuses to settle. They constantly innovated with new materials, manufacturing methods, and thoughtful designs features that push the envelope year after year.
Their unrelenting innovation across all design aspects gives Under Armour shafts a noticeable performance edge across the board.
Finding your ideal lacrosse shaft means tuning two key parameters – flex profile and length. Under Armour offers a range of configurations so players can match shafts to their style and position.
Choosing the right shaft flex and length
Dialing in flex and length is crucial for maximizing your lacrosse shaft’s performance potential:
Stiffness for defense
On defense, stiffer shafts excel since they don’t absorb any energy when doling out checks. Under Armour’s stiffer carbon shafts transfer all force straight into the opposing player’s stick.
More flexible shafts tend to dampen poke checks and allow too much twist. Defenders need maximum stiffness.
Flexibility for offense
For offensive positions, more flexible shafts offer better feel, control, and passing touch. Under Armour’s composite and alloy shafts provide excellent blend of stiffness and flex for cradling, shooting, and distributing the ball.
Too much rigidity reduces touch, while too much whip destroys shooting power – an offensive shaft must balance both.
Length for reach
Longer lacrosse shafts around 60 inches give defenders more blocking coverage. Extra length coupled with stiffness allows them to shut down larger passing and shooting lanes.
Shorter shafts around 40 inches optimize quick stick handling and shot releases critical for offensive players.
Find your perfect specs
Under Armour empowers athletes to customize shafts to their game through extensive flex and length options across models. Dialing in your ideal specs takes experimentation, but pays off big on game day.
Don’t settle for a generic “one size fits all” shaft – with Under Armour’s range, you can equip a stick tailored to you.
Proper stringing techniques for lacrosse heads
Stringing a lacrosse head properly is crucial for maximizing ball control, passing, catching, and shooting accuracy. With the wide variety of lacrosse head shapes and styles available today, stringing can be an intricate process. However, adhering to some fundamental stringing principles and techniques will ensure a lacrosse stick with excellent pocket performance.
The first consideration when stringing a lacrosse head is the pocket location. Attack players generally prefer a mid-to-high pocket for superior ball control and quick release shots, while midfielders need a mid-to-low pocket for scooping ground balls and securing passes. Defensemen do well with a deeper pocket to help corral errant passes and checks. Regardless of position, the ideal pocket has a medium depth, defined sidewalls, and a balanced sweet spot that cradles comfortably.
When stringing sidewall strings, consistency is key. The interwoven lacrosse mesh should sit flush within the sidewalls, with even spaces between strings from top to bottom. Wide gaps can lead to uneven pocket formation while over-tight stringing restricts pocket movement. Aim for taut sidewalls that let the mesh move freely. Double-looping the first two sidewall knots adds durability. The top string should be threaded one hole below the scoop to create a defined pocket lip for clean releases.
Proper lacrosse mesh stringing uses a systematic sequence of knots, diamonds, and runners that maintain desired pocket shape. Beginners can start with a basic straight 10-diamond top string leading into a single runner along each side. More advanced patterns incorporate stacked diamonds, alternating runners, and unique knot sequences to fine-tune pocket depth, hold, and release point. When weaving diamonds, keep the knots snug and uniform. Runners should track straight down the midpoint of the mesh strips. Take care not to over-tighten knots or pull mesh taught, as this can reduce pocket flexibility.
Shooting string placement controls ball stability within the pocket. Traditionally, three evenly spaced nylon shooters are anchored from sidewall to sidewall below the scoop. This tri-shooter setup generates a consistent release point from any pocket location. Some players add a V-shooter crossing the two bottom shooters to create a central ball cradle. Others weave an interwoven shooter grid for maximum ball control. When installing shooting strings, tie adjustable slip knots underneath the sidewall to enable re-positioning as needed.
Once the stringing is complete, use a lacrosse ball and your hands to massage and shape the pocket, forming the natural contours that best match your playing style. Focus on creating a smooth ramp from the gut of the pocket up towards the ball stop at the scoop. Break in the pocket by passing and catching repeatedly to get the mesh pocket surface softened and supple. With the ideal pocket formed, remember to check sidewall and shooting string tightness before each game to keep the strings from loosening over time.
While following basic stringing principles is important, don’t be afraid to experiment with custom patterns that give your lacrosse stick unique playing characteristics. Observe how subtle adjustments to diamond sequences, knot spacing, and shooter placement affect ball control and release. With practice, you’ll be able to string lacrosse heads customized precisely for your position and preferences.
With the endless lacrosse head and mesh options now available, the stringing combinations are virtually limitless. However, understanding fundamental stringing methods will ensure high-performing pockets for lacrosse players of all levels and positions. Mastering pocket stringing techniques takes time and patience, but the reward is a lacrosse stick tailored specifically for you.
Tips for maintaining your lacrosse shaft
As a key piece of lacrosse equipment, keeping your stick shaft in optimal condition is essential for peak performance. While lacrosse shafts are designed to withstand the rigors of competition, implementing proper maintenance habits will extend the life of your stick.
Perform routine inspections of your shaft before and after each use. Check for any cracks or dents that may compromise the integrity of the structure. Minor cracks can be sanded and sealed to prevent further damage. For more serious fractures, replacement may be necessary for safety. Also inspect connections like the head, end cap, and handle for any loosening or wobble.
Wipe down your shaft after each use to remove built-up dirt, sweat, and grime. Pay special attention to grip areas where hands transfer oils and moisture that can lead to premature breakdown of the shaft surface. Use a mild detergent mixed with warm water and a soft cloth to gently clean. Avoid immersing composite shafts in water or using harsh chemicals that may cause corrosion.
Store sticks properly when not in use. Keep shafts out of direct sunlight and away from excessive heat like car interiors on hot days. The temperature extremes can accelerate material breakdown. Lay sticks flat or hang vertically from wall mounts to prevent warping. Never place heavy objects on top that could cause bending or fractures.
Consider applying a shaft sealant every month or two, focusing on high-wear areas. Sealants provide an added moisture barrier and can help limit dirt buildup. Lightly sand any chipped or distressed sections first before applying the coating. Allow proper drying time before use to ensure performance isn’t impacted.
Replace worn end caps and grips as needed to improve comfort and control. New grips give better traction and minimize hand slippage during play. Rotating ends caps extends usable life by shifting high-wear locations. Check regularly under tape and grips for hidden cracks or splinters.
Do not overlook scuffs and abrasions. Use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough spots that develop through checks or hard slashes. Unrepaired damage leaves vulnerable areas prone to more extensive cracks and fractures over time.
Carry a small repair kit containing extra screws, tape, end plugs and grip replacements. Having critical spare parts on hand allows for quick fixes on the fly before small issues balloon into broken equipment.
Consider an off-season deep clean for your shaft if grime and grit have built up. Use a lacrosse specific cleaner and gently scrub away embedded dirt. Rinse thoroughly, let dry fully, and apply a fresh round of sealant to rejuvenate the surface.
Be mindful of impacts during use. Avoid slamming your stick on the ground or against goal posts even during moments of excitement or frustration. The repeated forces take a toll on your shaft’s structural integrity.
Know when to retire a shaft. Advanced cracks, major dents, and catastrophic breaks mean it’s time to replace your stick before a failure happens at the worst possible moment. Repairs can only go so far if the original composite plies or aluminum is beyond salvage.
Consider adding a protective case when transporting your stick to safeguard against dings, dents and other damage when not in use. Well-cared-for shafts can maintain top performance for multiple seasons of competitive play.
With equipment costs continuing to rise, extending the usable lifespan of your shaft just makes smart lacrosse and financial sense. By applying consistent maintenance habits and TLC, your shaft will deliver season after season of reliable, high-caliber play.
What’s up lacrosse friends! Have you put some thought into whether your lacrosse shaft is best suited for offense or defense? I know when I first started playing lacrosse back in high school, I just grabbed whatever shaft was available and didn’t think too hard about whether it was optimized for my position. But after getting some experience under my belt, I’ve learned there are some key differences between offensive and defensive shafts that can really impact your game.
Stiffness and strength
One of the biggest considerations is how stiff and strong the shaft is. On defense, you need a shaft that can take those big slashes and holds up against all kinds of contact. You’re also going to be poking and slapping a lot, so you need something that won’t bend or break. That’s why defensive players often go for shafts made of stronger materials like titanium alloys. The added strength lets you play more aggressively on D.
On offense, you want something more flexible and lightweight. Those sharp cuts and quick sticks require a shaft that can load and unload energy quickly. You’ll also be cradling a ton up and down the field, so having a shaft with a little flex makes it easier to find that sweet spot in your cradling motion. That’s why you see a lot of offensive players sporting shafts made of composite materials, which offer a nice balance of strength and flexibility.
Handle shape and texture
Here’s another key difference between offensive and defensive needs – the shape and texture of the handle. For defenders, you want a thicker, rounder handle shape to help lock in during checks. The added thickness gives you more to grip. It also makes it harder for offensive players to check your stick, even if they land a drop check right on the money. A smooth glossy finish helps the handle slide through checks, letting your stick rotate rather than absorbing the energy from the check.
On offense, players tend to like thinner handles to help maximize control and feel. You want to be able to snap that top hand around quickly during rolls, so a thinner profile gives you more range of motion and quicker releases. A grippier matte texture also helps keep the ball locked in, especially if you like to run sans glove. The grip factor helps make up for the thinner dimension. An extra tacky grip also reduces fatigue over the course of a game from having to squeeze your top hand so much.
Head offset
Here’s one more subtle difference to consider – the amount of offset built into the head. Offset refers to how far the head is set off from the centerline of the handle. More offset heads sit farther from the shaft, giving you an increased angle of attack on your throws, passes, and shots. This can be beneficial for offensive players who are ripping shots from the outside and trying to bury goals past keepers. The increased angle adds velocity and makes the ball release off the sticks at a tougher angle for goalies to defend.
For defenders, less offset is preferable. You want to be able to quickly move your stick into passing lanes for checks and blocks. Less offset brings the head closer to the shaft, getting more of the head directly in front of your hands. This makes it quicker and easier to get your stick where you need it to deny passes and throw checks. Less offset also helps when poking at ground balls, allowing you to scoop cleanly without the extra distance between your hands and the scoop.
Head shapes
Lacrosse heads have so many shape varieties nowadays it can make your head spin trying to pick one. In general for offense, more pinched and pointed heads are desirable. The tight pinch focuses the ball release and shot velocity. The pinched “V” channel also helps cradle the ball more securely, letting you carry while running full speed. More rounded heads give you some extra hold for big checks and scooping up ground balls on defense.
So in summary, stiff and strong shafts are ideal for defense, while flexible and lightweight shafts optimize offensive play. Thicker, glossy handles help defenders absorb checks, while thinner grippier handles give offense the control they need. More offset benefits offensive shooting and passing, while less offset provides an advantage on defense. And pinched heads favor offensive ball security and shooting, while rounder heads suit defensive checking and scooping. Hopefully breaking down these key differences gives you some guidance when you’re picking out your next shaft and head setup. Let me know in the comments if this helps explain offensive vs. defensive lacrosse shafts!
Under Armour has focused on all of these aspects when designing their Under Armour defense lacrosse sticks and Under Armour lacrosse shafts. I’ve tested out a bunch of their gear through the years and have been impressed with how specialized their products have become. They really optimize shafts, heads, and gloves now based on your position and needs on the field.
For defense, I’d recommend checking out their Hammer and Rivalry line of shafts. These offer the perfect stiffness and strength for withstanding checks. UA also creates heads with optimal offset for defenders like the Portal and Brawler.
For offense, try out their Quicksand or Swizzbeat shafts. These have the lightweight flexibility needed for quick cuts and feeds. Some of my favorite heads for offense are the UA Fireball and Launch. They have just the right amount of pinch and channel depth to lock in cradles and crank out shots.
The great thing is UA also makes combo packages where the shaft and head are designed to perfectly complement each other based on your position. When it comes to lacrosse gear, you want quality equipment that will perform but also not destroy your bank account. Let’s break down the cost analysis on Under Armour lacrosse shafts and heads compared to other major brands.
Cost analysis of Under Armour vs other brands
In general, Under Armour shafts and heads fall right in the middle of the price spectrum. They are more affordable than super premium brands like Maverik and STX. But UA gear is priced higher than entry-level lacrosse equipment from brands like Brine and Warrior.
Here’s a rough breakdown of average shaft prices:
- High-End: $120-$150 (Maverik, STX)
- Mid-Range: $80-$110 (Under Armour)
- Entry-Level: $50-$80 (Brine, Warrior)
For heads, the pricing ladder looks like:
- High-End: $90-$120
- Mid-Range: $65-$90 (Under Armour)
- Entry-Level: $40-$65
Of course, you’ll see price variations within each brand based on materials, technologies, and position-specific designs. In general, Under Armour occupies that profitable mid-range sweet spot – better performance and quality than entry-brands but more affordable than ultra-premium equipment.
Under Armour’s expertise in engineering helps maximize value. Technological innovations like their unique composite alloys and optimized head shapes offer pro-level performance at lower cost than hand-crafted heads. Efficient manufacturing and global brand power also allow UA to reduce costs versus smaller niche brands.
This price advantage makes Under Armour a great choice for high school and college players on a budget. You get many of the same technologies and materials as $200 lacrosse shafts for half the price.
Under Armour is also competitive when it comes to complete sticks. Pre-strung packages with both shaft and head offer savings versus buying separately. And again, UAcomplete sticks are more affordable than premium packages but much higher performance than entry-level gear.
Overall, Under Armour lacrosse gear delivers a lot of bang for your buck. The value is evident when you consider the brand’s cutting edge technologies and materials at mid-range pricing. Players looking for budget-friendly quality choose Under Armour over entry brands. And smart shoppers choose UA over ultra-premium equipment when they want pro performance without overspending.
Every lacrosse goalie wants the same thing: to make the big save. As the last line of defense, a goalie’s job is to stop the ball from going into the net. To do that, goalies need a lacrosse shaft that gives them the quickness, control, and durability needed to make those game-changing stops. For many goalies, Under Armour is the go-to brand for lacrosse shafts. But with so many options to choose from, how do you know which Under Armour shaft is the right one?
When evaluating lacrosse goalie shafts, there are a few key factors to consider. First, you want a shaft that is stiff yet lightweight. As a goalie, you need to move your stick rapidly to make saves, so excess weight can slow you down. Under Armour uses high-end materials like carbon fiber and Scandium titanium to create stiff yet incredibly lightweight shafts. For example, the Under Armour Deutsch shaft weighs just over 12 ounces but has tremendous stiffness and strength. This allows for quick reactions and control.
Second, you need excellent grip and handling. With shots coming in high and low, you need complete control of your stick to make off-angle saves. Under Armour goalie shafts use grip technologies to help keep the shaft locked in your hands. The Rail system on shafts like the Under Armour Siegel provides angled ridges along the shaft for a superior grip. Meanwhile, the tactile texture on shafts like the Under Armour Burn FO helps give you consistency in all weather conditions.
Third, durability is a must. As a goalie, your shaft takes a pounding on shots, so it needs to hold up over time. Under Armour uses materials like aircraft grade aluminum alloy on the Burn FO to create an incredibly durable shaft. The Scandium titanium alloy on shafts like the Under Armour Deutsch and Nacho is also extremely rugged. These shafts can take season after season of hard use and keep performing.
Beyond these key factors, Under Armour also offers goalie-specific features to enhance performance. For example, the angled head designs on shafts like the Under Armour Blur 2.0 FO are made to optimize saves. The unique shape places the ball deeper in the head to gain better control on shots down low or high to the corners.
Under Armour also integrates unique technologies into some goalie shafts. The Ratchet Lock system on the Under Armour Blur 2.0 FO uses an adjustable dial system to customize the head to your ideal stiffness and flex point. This lets you fine tune the shaft to match your personal playing style.
Here is a quick look at some of the top Under Armour lacrosse goalie shafts to consider:
Under Armour Deutsch
– Ultra lightweight Scandium titanium alloy construction
– Octagon shape for great grip and handling
– Stiff for excellent control on saves
Under Armour Burn FO
– Durable aircraft grade aluminum alloy
– Tactile grip for control in all conditions
– Mid-level price point
Under Armour Blur 2.0 FO
– Angled head designed for goalies

As you can see, Under Armour offers lacrosse goalies a lot of excellent shaft options. The key is finding the right balance of weight, grip, flex, and technologies to match your personal style in the crease. If quickness and lightweight handling are most important, shafts like the Under Armour Deutsch or Nacho FO are great choices. For customization and high-end performance, the Under Armour Blur 2.0 FO is hard to beat. And if you want a durable, grippy shaft at a mid-level price point, the Under Armour Burn FO is ideal.
At the end of the day, the right Under Armour lacrosse shaft comes down to feel and performance. If you get the chance, take some time during the offseason to demo different Under Armour goalie shafts to see which one becomes an extension of your arm in the crease. This will give you the confidence to make those game-changing saves when the pressure is on. So don’t settle for just any shaft – find the Under Armour goalie shaft that gives you the quickness, control, and reliability to take your game to the next level.
Conclusion – Why Under Armour is a top choice
For lacrosse goalies looking to enhance their game, Under Armour lacrosse shafts should be at the top of the list. With a wide range of goalie-specific features and innovative technologies, Under Armour shafts are engineered for today’s fast-paced lacrosse game.
