What are the must-have lacrosse equipment items for young players. How to choose the right lacrosse stick, helmet, and protective gear. Which lacrosse cleats provide the best performance on the field.
Selecting the Perfect Lacrosse Stick for Youth Players
The lacrosse stick is the cornerstone of any player’s equipment arsenal. For youth athletes, choosing the right stick can significantly impact their skill development and on-field performance. What factors should parents and young players consider when selecting a lacrosse stick?
Stick length is crucial and varies based on the player’s height and position. Defenders typically require longer sticks, while midfielders and attackmen benefit from shorter options. The head type is another vital consideration, with wider heads offering better ball control for midfielders and narrower heads providing superior shooting accuracy for attackmen.
When shopping for a youth lacrosse stick, prioritize lightweight yet durable materials. This combination allows for easier handling and helps develop fundamental skills like cradling, scooping, passing, and shooting. Many manufacturers offer youth-specific models designed to grow with the player, featuring adjustable lengths and interchangeable heads.
Key Features to Look for in Youth Lacrosse Sticks:
- Appropriate length for player’s height and position
- Suitable head width for intended playing style
- Lightweight, durable materials
- Comfortable grip
- Adjustable or interchangeable components for longevity
Essential Protective Gear: Helmets, Gloves, and Pads
Safety is paramount in lacrosse, especially for young players still developing their skills and physical capabilities. What protective equipment is necessary for youth lacrosse players?
Lacrosse Helmets: Safeguarding the Most Important Asset
A properly fitted lacrosse helmet is non-negotiable for player safety. Youth helmets should feature adjustable chin straps and removable face masks to accommodate growth. More advanced models incorporate extra padding in high-impact zones and removable ear pieces to enhance hearing and on-field communication.
When selecting a helmet, ensure a snug fit that doesn’t wobble or shift during play. Many youth helmets offer size adjustment systems to extend their usability as the player grows.
Lacrosse Gloves: Balancing Protection and Stick Control
Gloves serve the dual purpose of protecting players’ hands while enhancing stick control. Youth lacrosse gloves typically feature padded palms and extended cuffs for wrist protection. Mid-range options may include additional foam or plastic reinforcement over high-impact zones on the thumb and fingers.
Proper glove sizing is crucial for optimal performance. Gloves that are too large can hinder a player’s grip and control, while those that are too small may restrict movement and comfort.
Shoulder Pads, Arm Guards, and Rib Protection
A comprehensive set of pads is essential for full-body protection during play. Shoulder pads, required for legal play, should cover the shoulders, collar bones, and sternum. Arm guards protect the elbows, forearms, and biceps from checks, while rib pads offer supplemental core protection.
When choosing protective gear, consider the player’s position and playing style. Attackmen may prefer more mobile, lightweight options, while defenders might opt for more robust protection to withstand frequent physical contact.
Footwear for Peak Performance: Selecting the Right Lacrosse Cleats
Proper footwear is crucial for maintaining traction, stability, and agility on the lacrosse field. How do you choose the right cleats for a youth player?
Youth lacrosse cleats prioritize lightweight materials and flexibility to accommodate developing athletes. Key features to look for include reinforced toe caps, breathable synthetic uppers, and studded or bladed outsoles for optimal traction.
The choice between mid-cut and low-cut cleats often depends on the player’s position. Midfielders may benefit from mid-cut cleats for improved lateral ankle stability during quick cuts and direction changes. Attackmen and defenders often prefer low-cut cleats for maximum ankle mobility.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Youth Lacrosse Cleats:
- Field surface (natural grass vs. artificial turf)
- Player’s position and movement patterns
- Ankle support preferences
- Fit and comfort
- Durability and quality of materials
Mouthguards: A Small But Crucial Piece of Equipment
Mouthguards are mandatory in lacrosse for protecting players’ teeth and jaws during contact play. What options are available for youth players?
Basic boil-and-bite mouthguards offer an affordable and easily accessible option. These can be molded at home to fit the player’s teeth. For a more comfortable and protective fit, custom-fitted mouthguards are available through dental professionals or specialized sports equipment providers.
Most lacrosse mouthguards feature a tether that attaches to the helmet’s face mask, allowing for quick reinsertion after removal. This feature is particularly useful during intense play or after a big hit.

More advanced jerseys incorporate technical fabrics for improved ventilation and moisture-wicking properties during intense workouts.
In addition to jerseys, many teams provide matching practice shorts to complete the uniform. This coordinated approach helps build team camaraderie and creates a more professional training environment.

Regular cleaning is crucial, especially for items that come into direct contact with the player’s skin. Helmets, pads, and gloves should be wiped down after each use and allowed to air dry completely. Many protective items have removable liners that can be machine washed for deeper cleaning.
Lacrosse sticks require special attention to maintain their shape and performance. Wooden sticks should be oiled periodically to prevent cracking, while plastic heads may need occasional reshaping if they become warped.
Tips for Maintaining Youth Lacrosse Equipment:
- Clean gear promptly after each use
- Store equipment in a cool, dry place
- Regularly inspect items for wear and damage
- Replace worn-out or outgrown equipment promptly

Budgeting for Youth Lacrosse Gear: Balancing Quality and Cost
Outfitting a young lacrosse player can be a significant investment. How can parents balance the need for quality equipment with budget constraints?
Prioritize spending on essential protective gear and the lacrosse stick. These items directly impact player safety and performance. Consider mid-range options that offer a good balance of quality and affordability.
For items like practice jerseys or supplemental training equipment, more budget-friendly options may suffice. Many sporting goods stores offer package deals for youth lacrosse starter kits, which can provide good value for beginners.
Strategies for Cost-Effective Equipment Shopping:
- Look for end-of-season sales or clearance events
- Consider gently used equipment from reputable sources
- Invest in adjustable or growth-friendly gear when possible

Athletic cup – Essential protection for male players
Lacrosse is a fast-paced, high-impact sport that requires players to wear protective gear from head to toe. This is especially true for youth players who are just learning the game and honing their skills. One essential piece of protective gear for male lacrosse players is the athletic cup.
The athletic cup is worn over the groin area and is designed to shield the genitals from blunt force trauma. In lacrosse, shots to the midsection from sticks, balls, and other players are common. Without the proper protection, a blow to this sensitive area can cause serious injury and intense pain. The athletic cup absorbs the impact and disperses the force to prevent harm to the genitals.
For youth players, an athletic cup is vital to avoiding injury during practices and games. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all male athletes participating in contact sports wear an athletic cup for protection. Most youth lacrosse leagues and school programs require them as mandatory equipment.
When shopping for an athletic cup, comfort and fit are key factors to consider. The cup should feel snug without restricting movement. Popular styles include the compression short with built-in pocket and the jock strap with removable cup. Look for athletic cups made of shock-absorbing plastic or steel for optimal protection. Avoid cheaply made cups that can crack or shatter upon impact.
Make sure young players are properly fitted for an athletic cup by an experienced sports retailer. Take into account the child’s age, size, and stage of development when selecting the right cup. Most fit into numerical sizing ranges starting as small as toddler sizes. A cup that is too large or small will be uncomfortable and ineffective in preventing injury.
It takes some time for youth players to get accustomed to wearing an athletic cup. Coaches and parents should encourage proper wearing during all practices and games, emphasizing that protection outweighs any minor discomfort. With repeated use, players will get used to the feeling of the cup and appreciate the added safety.
While an athletic cup may seem like an awkward and unnecessary hassle to some young lacrosse players, it is an essential piece of protective gear. No male player should step onto the field without one. Taking this important safety precaution can help ensure many injury-free seasons of enjoying the sport.
Lacrosse gear for youth: 15 essentials to dominate the field
Playing lacrosse, whether for the first time or competing at an elite level, requires the right protective gear and equipment. For youth players especially, having proper lacrosse gear helps minimize injury risk and enhances skill development on the field. Here are 15 must-have items for your child’s lacrosse gear bag:
Helmet
A helmet with face mask protects the head and face from checks, errant sticks, and hard shots. Look for a lightweight helmet with adjustable chin straps and cheek pads for customized fit and comfort.
Mouthguard
Wearing a mouthguard during lacrosse prevents dental and mouth injuries by absorbing impact. A custom-fitted guard offers the best protection but boil-and-bite is more affordable.
Protective gloves
Gloves protect hands and wrists from checks, slashes, and ground balls. Padded palms provide cushioning when catching and throwing. Youth sizes available.
Arm pads
Pad sets with bicep, elbow, and shoulder protection help shield the upper body against checks. Look for adjustable, lightweight pads that allow mobility.
Rib pads
Optional rib pads cushion the chest and abdomen from ball impact. Some players forego them for more mobility.
Shoulder pads
Shoulder pads worn under the jersey absorb checks to the shoulder and chest area. Essential defensive gear. Youth sizes adjust as kids grow.
Cleats
Lacrosse cleats provide traction for quick cuts, dodges, and sprints. Look for molded styles with additional ankle support. Youth sizes available.
Athletic cup
Essential protection for male players. Shields the groin area from trauma. Must properly fit the child’s size and development.
Practice jersey
Reversible pinnies/mesh jerseys worn at practice for team identification. Allows coaches to quickly divide teams.
Game jersey
Team jerseys represent unity on the field. Offer youth sizes and select based on how long the uniform will be usable.
Shorts
Lightweight lacrosse shorts or compression shorts allow free range of motion. Look for pockets to hold mouthguard when not in play.
Socks
Moisture-wicking performance socks help avoid blisters. Mid-calf length offers additional shin protection.
Stick
Essential for handling the ball. Offset or regular sticks allow different hands positioning. Proper length avoids having to bend excessively.
Stick stringing
Proper pocket stringing helps with ball control. Shallow pockets recommended for beginners learning catching/throwing.
Lacrosse ball
Soft lacrosse balls are great for beginner practice to help develop stick skills before advancing to a real lacrosse ball.
Investing in high-quality, protective lacrosse gear is a must, especially when outfitting youth players. With the proper sizing, fit, and comfort level, your child will be ready to take the field and enjoy developing their skills and love of the fast-paced game.
Athletic tape – Tape wrists and handle for better control
One small but useful piece of lacrosse gear that can make a big difference in performance is athletic tape. For youth players especially, taping certain areas of the stick and body can enhance ball control, grip, and maneuverability on the field.
Applying athletic tape to the bottom of the stick handle gives players better control when carrying, cradling, and passing the ball. The tape provides friction and grip so the stick won’t easily rotate or slip in the hands. A few wraps of tape on the handle can make a world of difference for young players still perfecting their stick skills.
Taping wrists and thumbs is also commonplace in lacrosse to reinforce the vulnerable joints. With the high speed of play and constant checks, wrists and thumbs tend to hyperextend and get caught in sticks. Taping provides stability and support to these sensitive areas when performing passes, shoots, and scoops.
When shopping for athletic tape, look for brands designed specifically for lacrosse. These tapes have just the right amount of stretch and grip without being too restrictive or irritating on the skin. Some feature a grid-like texture to allow a bit of breathability while also adhering firmly.
Coaches should teach youth players proper taping techniques for getting the right amount of support without limiting mobility. Only tape areas that need reinforcement based on the player’s position and style of play. For example, midfielders may tape their wrists and thumbs, while defenders tape their forearms and calves for extra protection.
Here are some key tips when taping for lacrosse:
- Make sure the skin is clean and dry before applying tape.
- Use pre-wrap under the tape to avoid irritation.
- Tape over the wrist bone for stability.
- Don’t tape too tight – allow for flexion and extension.
- Smooth edges to prevent peeling.
Take the time to teach youth players how to tape properly and safely. Taping gear should be readily available in practices and games to re-tape as needed. Carry tape cutters, extra tape, and pre-wrap in lacrosse bags.
While taping may seem trivial, taking advantage of this simple gear can give developing lacrosse players an edge. With taped wrists, hands, and sticks, youth can play with greater confidence, security, and control.

For youth players, wearing their team’s colors gives them a sense of belonging and pumps up excitement for game day.
Lacrosse jerseys are typically made of lightweight, breathable fabrics like polyester or cotton-poly blends. The uniform top includes the team name/logo on the front and player’s number on the back. For youth teams, opt for durable materials that will last multiple seasons as kids grow. Select youth sizes allowing for a roomy fit with pads worn underneath.
Reversible mesh pinnies are worn at practices for easy team sorting. Coaches can quickly divide large groups into teams with different colored pinnies. These mesh jerseys allow for maximum air flow during intense drills.
For games, invest in high-quality lacrosse jerseys in your team’s colors. Many youth leagues require home and away jerseys in light and dark shades. This allows teams to switch based on who is home/away for clear on-field identification.
Lacrosse shorts are typically loose fitting for maximum mobility. Shorter inseams allow freedom of movement for sprints across the field. Built-in pads provide lightweight protection over the hips and tailbone region.
Most lacrosse shorts feature pockets to hold the mouthguard when taken out between plays. Some also have mesh ventilation zones to keep players cool.
When shopping for youth lacrosse uniforms, look for:

A helmet specifically designed for boy’s or girl’s lacrosse that meets NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) standards is an absolute necessity. Helmets come in a range of sizes, from extra small to large, and should properly fit the player’s head without movement or gaps. Most helmets have adjustable chin straps to customize the fit. Visors, face masks and protective cups for ears can also be added for more protection.
Shoulder Pads
Padded shoulder protection is required by most leagues for necessary safety. Shoulder pad styles and sizes vary, so try on different options to find the right fit. For maximum mobility, the shoulder caps should contour to the player’s shoulders without impeding motion. Consider detachable pads for more customizable protection.
Arm Pads
Adding arm pads provides more complete coverage for youth players on the field. They defend against checks and collisions from opponents’ sticks. Lightweight pads that extend from above the elbow to the wrist offer forearm, elbow and bicep protection without limiting motion.
Gloves
Gloves give players better stick control while also protecting the hands and wrists from checks, ground balls and boarding. Youth lacrosse gloves come in different cuts, with key options being open and closed finger styles. Try out different fits to find the right amount of feel and flexibility for handling the stick.
Mouthguard
Mouthguards are mandatory lacrosse safety gear that keep teeth protected. They come in styles that mold to the player’s bite for the most secure fit. Youth players feel more comfortable wearing mouthguards that allow them to breathe and speak naturally. Models with straps also help prevent inadvertent removal on the field.
Protective Cup
For boys playing lacrosse, wearing a protective cup is non-negotiable. Studies show groin injuries are common in the sport. A cup should be snug, shock-absorbing and designed for athletic wear. Many are made with ventilation for comfort during intense play.
Cleats
Lacrosse cleats provide traction for quick cuts, acceleration and changes in direction. Models with molded studs or blades on the soles dig into natural or synthetic turf. Consider detachable cleats for varying field conditions. Proper fit for growing feet means ordering 1⁄2 to 1 size up from their everyday shoes.
Stick
A lacrosse stick meeting sport specific requirements is essential for handling, cradling and passing the ball. For youth levels, stick lengths are dictated by the player’s age and position. The head design varies for men’s and women’s lacrosse. Young players benefit from lighter sticks to develop skills without getting fatigued.
Goggles
Goggles offer supplementary face protection and are required by some leagues. Youth lacrosse goggles shield the eyes from errant sticks without impeding vision. Most have an adjustable elastic strap for a secure fit over a player’s helmet.
Bag
A lacrosse bag carries all the gear and provides handy storage. Duffle bags with pockets, compartments and removable shoulder straps allow for organized transport. Some feature protective helmet pockets and ventilation to prevent mildew odors.
Optional extra gear can enhance a youth player’s comfort, performance and safety based on preferences, climate and budget. Some add-ons to consider are:
Padded Shirts
Adding a layer of protection, padded lacrosse shirts have built-in rib, shoulder and back pads. The lightweight, breathable designs integrate protection without restricting motion.
Elbow Pads
For more comprehensive arm protection, full elbow pads cushion from checks. Options like slip-on sleeve style pads combine ease of wear with flexible padding zones for both comfort and safety.
Shorts
Compression style lacrosse shorts with integrated pads add padding for hips, thighs and tailbone. This extra cushioning aids in slide tackles and provides defense all season.
Socks
Tall lacrosse socks offer shin protection and support. Calf-length socks combine cushioning and compression. Proper fit helps hold pads firmly in place during intense play.
Athletic Cup
In addition to a hard protective cup, some players opt for a compression cup jock for extra support and comfort. Combining the two provides maximum protection that stays put.
Slider Shorts
Worn under pads, slick nylon slider shorts make gear easier to put on and take off. The reduced friction also aids in keeping pads from shifting during sprints and directional changes on the field.
Equipping for success on the lacrosse field requires outfitting youth players with essential gear from head to toe. Ensuring proper fit and comfort allows young athletes to focus on skill development and competitive play. With the right helmet, pads, gloves, stick and cleats, players gain confidence by being ready for the field’s physical demands.
Agility equipment – Ladders and cones promote speed and coordination
Gearing up for lacrosse requires more than just the pads and stick. To really take their game to the next level, young players need training tools that build critical skills. Agility equipment enhances performance by improving footwork, reaction time, speed and overall athleticism. Incorporating agility drills into practices pays dividends out on the field.
For serious lacrosse athletes, agility equipment should definitely be on the gear list. Here are some top options for elevating skills:
Ladder Drills
Footwork is crucial in lacrosse, whether it’s dodging defenders or scooping up ground balls. Ladder drills develop this key skill by requiring coordinated steps in sequence. The simple metal or plastic ladder lays flat and provides alternating rungs for a series of intricate foot patterns. Proper form means always keeping feet in the ladder squares, working on accuracy. Variations like lateral shuffle steps, hops and jumps take the challenge to the next level once players master the basics.
Speed Ladders
Similar to agility ladders, speed ladders focus on improving fast footwork. The ladders have flat fabric rungs sewn into nylon straps, providing more rebound action than rigid models. The dynamic response when running through the ladder helps build explosive speed. Patterns can get complex by combining forward, backward and lateral drills for a complete footwork challenge. Adjustable positioning allows focusing the speed training.
Hurdles
Leaping over a series of low hurdles boosts explosive power essential in lacrosse. The adjustable hurdles allow customizing the height as skills progress. Starting with basic two-foot clearance and working up to one-foot hops over each hurdle kicks up the intensity. Hurdle drills improve leg strength, vertical leap and side-to-side agility on the field.
Cones
Setting up a series of cones allows creating any agility drill. These sturdy rubber training cones won’t tip over when players make sharp cuts around them. Simple figure 8 patterns help with changing direction. Cone courses can zigzag across the field making players work on lateral steps between them. Smaller cones can also substitute for ladder rungs when combined in creative sequences.
Agility Poles
Combining footwork with stick skills, agility poles are integral lacrosse training tools. Laying out a line of poles low to the ground, players weave through while cradling a ball. Keeping control while maneuvering tight spaces improves coordination. Bonus drills include scooping up balls placed at each pole on the run.
Step Platforms
For building explosive power in the legs, step platforms provide effective training. The adjustable platforms range from just a few inches high up to a foot tall. Athletes repeatedly step up onto the platform focusing on driving momentum from the lower body. The impact when landing back down engages the large leg muscle groups.
Resistance Bands
Incorporating resistance band training takes agility to the next level. The stretchy elastic bands come in varying resistance levels. Looping bands around the legs and moving laterally forces extra exertion with each step. The added tension challenges balance and leg strength for better sideline-to-sideline mobility.
Quickness Belts
Worn around the waist, quickness belts add resistance for agility training. The adjustable belt has thick bungee cords on each side. Players push through the tension of the elastic cords to improve first step explosion. Quick and sharp changes in direction also become more challenging.
Sled Harnesses
Hitting the sled engages muscles that boost acceleration from a dead stop. Athletes wear a harness tethered to a weighted sled, then drive into the load using short explosive steps. The full-body motion builds tremendous power applicable on the lacrosse field.
When equipping their young lacrosse athletes, parents and coaches should look beyond basic gear. Agility equipment engages the muscles and skills needed for next level performance. Ladders, cones and hurdles combined with resistance tools develop the physical attributes that dominate on the field – speed, quickness, coordination and explosive power. Training with purpose leads to playing with purpose.
