Pick the Right Length Lacrosse Stick for Your Position and Skill Level
When shopping for a new lacrosse stick, one of the most important factors to consider is the length. Lacrosse stick length can vary quite a bit, with attack sticks starting around 30 inches while specialized defensive poles can reach up to 72 inches long. Choosing the proper length lax stick is vital for maximizing your performance on the field.
For attack players, shorter stick lengths from 30-42 inches are typical. These compact sticks allow for quicker passing and shooting in tight offensive sets. Midfield players tend to use sticks from 42-54 inches, balancing the need for quick handling with extended reach for scooping ground balls. Defensive players rely on very long sticks from 54-72 inches to poke check opponents and intercept passes.
Within those position-based ranges, picking the right lacrosse stick length also depends heavily on your skill level, height, and personal preference. For example, smaller or less experienced players often opt for shorter sticks for easier control. Taller players can manage longer sticks without compromising their handling ability. As you get more comfortable with stringing and handling longer sticks, you may choose to size up for a greater defensive advantage.
Trying out sticks with different lengths is the best way to dial in your ideal balance of control and reach. Start on the shorter end of the range for your position, and go up in length until it becomes difficult to cleanly catch and pass. Add an inch or two back from that point for your optimal length for now. Keep in mind your stick length can change over time as your skills progress. Don’t be afraid to experiment to find the perfect length lacrosse stick for your game!
Consider Your Skill Level When Picking a Lacrosse Stick
When choosing a new lacrosse stick, it’s important to take your skill level into account. As a beginner, intermediate or advanced player, you’ll need a stick that matches your abilities in order to properly develop your game.
For brand new lacrosse players just starting out, a basic entry-level stick is the best option. These sticks feature wider heads and minimal offset for maximum control and easy handling. Entry-level lacrosse shaft materials like aluminum alloy are durable yet affordable. An open sidewall head design allows for basic stringing that doesn’t require advanced techniques. While basic in specs, these beginner lacrosse sticks allow new players to focus on developing proper fundamentals like cradling, scooping, passing and catching.
Intermediate lacrosse players with some experience under their belt can upgrade to a stick with more advanced features. Mid-level sticks offer stronger shaft materials like composite for increased durability. The head offset is more aggressive for added ball control while cradling. You’ll also see tighter head stringing patterns and nylon mesh in pockets at this level. These improved sticks will be lighter and allow for better ball feel as you work on accuracy in passing, shooting and stick handling at faster speeds.
For advanced and elite players, the highest-end lacrosse sticks provide maximum performance capabilities. These sticks are extremely lightweight for effortless handling, with elite materials like carbon fiber shafts. Heads feature high offsets and narrower widths for precision passing and shooting. You’ll also find pre-shrunk and waxed mesh for consistent high-level pocket performance. The tighter stringing and stiffer head give advanced players ultimate control and ball feel for playing at the highest levels and fastest pace.
Trying sticks at your skill level is the best way to ensure you can develop fundamental skills without getting frustrated. As your abilities improve over time, you can upgrade to sticks with more advanced features to unlock your full potential on the lacrosse field.

Select a Stick Weight That Suits Your Strength and Preference
Along with length, the weight of your lacrosse stick is another key factor in finding your ideal fit. Stick weights typically range from super lightweight options under 12 ounces up to heavier sticks over 15 ounces.
For younger players or those newer to the game, a lighter stick in the 12-13 ounce range allows you to focus more on developing proper technique rather than struggling with a heavy stick. Women’s lacrosse sticks are also lighter to align with the non-contact nature of the women’s game.
Heavier sticks offer more durability and improved checking strength once you have the experience to control them. Elite level men’s sticks can weigh 15+ ounces to hold up to physical play while still providing quick handling with composite materials. Proficient players also sometimes prefer a heavier stick for the added mass when shooting.
Trying out sticks of different weights will help you find your optimum balance of lightness and power. Start lighter as you’re learning proper mechanics and cradling. As your skills improve, you may want to go heavier for more checking resistance or mass behind shots and passes. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the lacrosse stick weight that feels best for your game.

Choose a Lacrosse Head Style Based on Your Position and Ability
Lacrosse heads come in a variety of shapes and styles, each optimized for different types of play. Picking the right head shape and design for your position and skill level is key to maximizing your performance.
For attack players, narrower head widths from 4.5-6 inches provide superior ball control and quick release shooting. Tighter sidewall stringing and higher scoops are ideal for elite attack heads. Wider 6-6.5 inch heads allow midfielders to scoop ground balls while retaining accuracy.
Defensive heads wider than 6.5 inches have a larger ball stopping area for checks and intercepts. Box lacrosse style heads maximize ball retention with extra deep sidewalls. Goalies also use extra wide heads with flat scoops to cover more net.
Beginners will benefit from basic universal head styles that offer playability for all positions. Intermediate players can upgrade to heads with intermediate scoop angles and defined sidewalls. Expert players require the most specialized heads with precision scoop and sidewall geometry tuned for their position.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different head shapes as you progress in the sport. An elite attack head may be too narrow for a defensive midfielder for example. Finding the right balance of specialized performance and versatility will give you the ideal lacrosse head shape.

Get the Proper Mesh Pocket Based on Your Position
The mesh pocket of your lacrosse head plays a huge role in ball control, release, and handling. Choosing the right pocket style and stringing for your position is crucial.
For attack players, a mid to deep pocket with a defined channel helps grip the ball for quick sticks and accurate shooting. More whip and hold in an attack pocket also enables quicker passes and shots. Midfield pockets balance hold with quick release, using a medium depth pocket with a moderate channel. Defensive pockets are shallower to dislodge the ball on checks while retaining some hold ability.
Beginner pockets should be easier to string, with basic interwocks and diamond top strings. Intermediate pockets add more definition with advanced meshes like hard mesh. Elite pockets feature intricate stringing patterns, custom leathers and shooting strings for maximum performance.
Be sure to factor in pocket placement based on your stick length as well. An attack pocket on a longer midfield stick may sit too low, for example. Trying out different pocket styles tailored to your position is key to optimizing your lacrosse stick.

Pick A Durable Shaft Material Based on Your Skill Level
Lacrosse shaft materials run the gamut from basic alloys to high-end composites. Picking the right shaft material for your skill level helps optimize durability, handling and pricing.
Beginner shafts typically use basic aluminum alloys like 6000 series aluminum. These affordable, durable shafts are ideal for players just learning proper technique. Intermediate shafts upgrade to higher grade 7000 series aluminum for increased performance without a big jump in cost.
Expert level shafts utilize advanced composite materials like Scandium titanium alloys or carbon fiber blends. These ultra lightweight, high strength shafts provide elite players maximum durability with effortless handling for high level play.
It’s important to match your shaft material to your skill so you’re not overwhelmed or underwhelmed. Advanced shafts won’t improve your fundamentals – go basic as you learn proper mechanics and cradling. Once your skills progress, you can upgrade your shaft to unlock quicker handling and tighter passing.

Before deciding on a new lacrosse stick, be sure to read reviews from other players. Lacrosse stick reviews provide valuable first-hand feedback so you can make the most informed purchasing decision.

Complete lacrosse sticks do cost a bit more than heads and shafts separately. But the added convenience and peace of mind from an expertly strung pocket makes complete sticks well worth it.

Properly String and Tune Your Stick for Optimal Performance
If you choose to string your lacrosse stick yourself, be sure to follow proper stringing techniques and guidelines. Proper stringing optimizes pocket performance and improves ball control.
Use quality mesh and strings from top brands designed specifically for lacrosse. Follow the mesh manufacturer’s stringing recommendations for ideal pocket shape and depth. Keep the pocket legal and avoid excessive whip or hold that could hinder performance.
Focus on a smooth, even pocket without irregular bunching. Tie off mesh firmly with knotted nylon to prevent premature loosening. Check that shooting strings are set to the legal amount and height to avoid penalties.
After stringing, continually tune and maintain your pocket by adjusting stringing, re-tightening and protecting mesh from debris buildup. Take time to break in and shape an ideal channel through wall ball sessions and practice.
With the right mesh and strings, proper stringing technique results in a smooth, consistent pocket tuned for ideal handling, release and control.

Break In Your Stick Before Games for Best Performance
After stringing your new lacrosse stick, it’s important to properly break it in before using it in games. Breaking in your stick shapes the pocket and improves performance.
Use wall ball sessions to shape the pocket channel and create defined hold points. Focus on catching cleanly in multiple spots along the head to evenly form the mesh.
Pass with teammates at varying speeds and distances to develop pocket feel and test release. Shoot on a goalie with different velocity and placement to dial in accuracy.
Check your pocket depth and ball sit periodically as you break in your stick. Make minor adjustments to shooting strings or sidewall tie-offs as needed to tune the pocket.
Ideally take at least 2-3 weeks with daily wall ball and passing work to properly break in your lacrosse stick. Be patient and put in the reps to shape the ideal pocket before taking it into competitions.
With a properly broken-in pocket, your stick will come alive in your hands and improve performance across all aspects of your game.
