Key Rule Changes That Make Games More Exciting
Key Rule Changes That Make Games More Exciting
One of the unique aspects of the new Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse league is how they’ve implemented innovative rule changes aimed at creating faster, higher-scoring games. While still maintaining the core foundations of lacrosse, these modifications emphasize pace, skill, and athleticism. Here are some key rules that make Athletes Unlimited lacrosse thrilling to watch:
30-Second Shot Clock
Traditional women’s lacrosse uses a 90-second shot clock. By cutting this down to just 30 seconds, Athletes Unlimited forces a quicker tempo. Teams must attempt shots more rapidly, increasing possessions and scoring opportunities. It also prohibits stagnant, slow-paced play. The accelerated pace keeps viewers engaged.
Fewer Substitutions
AU Lacrosse limits total substitutions to six per team, per half. This restriction keeps elite players like Dana Dobbie, Sam Apuzzo, and Alyssa Murray on the field for longer stretches. Fans get to see stars shine instead of constant shuffling of reserves you find in other leagues. Tired players later in games also create unpredictability.
Format Emphasizes Individual Play
With new teams drafted each week based on individual player point totals, Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse incentivizes stars to stand out. The league awards points for goals, assists, draw controls, caused turnovers, and more. This motivates players to elevate their game independently to earn draft spots, unlike traditional “team first” formats.
International-Style Draws
Traditional lacrosse draws involve two players scrambling for the ball as it’s rolled between them. Athletes Unlimited uses the international draw style where two players stand with sticks in the air trying to gain possession as the referee releases the ball upwards. This creative format provides a new visual and strategic wrinkle that energizes draws.
Quick Restarts
Instead of every goal starting with a draw, AU Lacrosse implements quick restarts after goals across the midfield line, similar to box lacrosse or hockey. This accelerates tempo and leads to transitions and counterattacks as teams push to respond immediately after giving up a goal. It’s an action-packed change.
By emphasizing pace of play, creativity, and skill, these innovative rule tweaks help Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse thrill fans. The game now rewards athleticism, risk-taking, and exploits stars’ abilities in exciting ways. Tune in to see these rule changes in action!

Weekly Team Drafts Shake Up Rosters
Weekly Team Drafts Shake Up Rosters
One truly unique aspect of Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse is the innovative way new teams are drafted each week. Instead of traditional static franchises, AU Lacrosse empowers top players to draft new rosters each week after accumulating individual points. This creative format keeps competition fresh and unpredictable all season long. Here’s an overview of how the weekly team drafts work:
Standings Based on Individual Points
Rather than team wins and losses, player standings are based on individual points. Athletes earn points each game based on statistics like goals, assists, draw controls, caused turnovers, and more. The four players with the most cumulative points become captains.
Captains Draft New Teams
The top four point scorers then draft new teams each week by taking turns selecting players one-by-one like a fantasy sports draft. Rosters are completely reset, leading to new matchups, chemistry experiments, and storylines.
Strategy Varies Each Week
Team captains can approach the draft strategically based on that week’s opponent. Will they stack all the top scorers? Or emphasize defenders? The draft format allows players to analyze strengths & weaknesses heading into games.
Stars and Role Players Work Together
With rosters changing weekly, stars like Sam Apuzzo or Dana Dobbie may share the field with different role players each game. This provides fresh connections between athletes and highlights different skillsets.
Added Drama and Gamesmanship
The snake-style draft order alternating each round adds drama. Rivals may maneuver to block picks or select teammates. Players dropped early one week have added motivation next game. The league also builds suspense by televising parts of the draft.
By empowering players to rebuild teams each week based on performance, Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse’s draft format creates endless excitement. Tune in to see who works together and watch the league’s top stars battle every game!

Innovative Individual Scoring System
The exciting new Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse League is shaking things up this season with an innovative individual scoring system that puts the focus on the athletes themselves rather than the teams. This creative format allows the top lacrosse players in the world to showcase their skills and compete for the coveted top spot in the individual rankings. So how does it work and how can you watch all the action unfold?
Unlike traditional lacrosse leagues where wins and losses determine a team’s standing, Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse has implemented a first-of-its-kind scoring system that tracks individual player performance. Athletes earn points based on their statistics and contributions on the field. The higher their cumulative score, the higher they rank. It’s an exciting twist that makes every game count!
Here’s a breakdown of the unique Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse scoring system:
- Players earn points for goals, assists, draw controls, caused turnovers, and ground balls.
- Additional points can be earned for hustle stats like recoveries, interceptions, and clears.
- Players lose points for turnovers, penalties, and fouls.
- Special bonus points are awarded for game-deciding goals and achievements like hat tricks.
- The leaderboard rankings are updated in real-time after every game.
This innovative format adds a whole new level of excitement and competitive fire to lacrosse. Every possession takes on greater meaning as the athletes battle for points. Fans get to watch as the rankings fluctuate after each intense matchup. Will the current leader hold onto the top spot? Can an upstart vault into contention with a breakout performance?
The scoring system also showcases individual brilliance. With the spotlight on their personal stats, the athletes are challenged to raise their game to maximize points. This could mean pulling off a highlight-reel worthy play or making the extra effort for a ground ball. The result is fast-paced, highly skilled lacrosse action you won’t find anywhere else!
Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse has also introduced other unique twists for its second season. The league features a draft at the start of each week, allowing the top four athletes to select teams. This balances out the rosters and prevents one squad from dominating. Game formats are fast and furious, with four 10-minute quarters. The short 2-hour games fit nicely into weekend television programming.
So how can you watch all the excitement and see the innovative individual scoring system in action? Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse has partnered with ESPN to provide national broadcast coverage of all games. Here are some key details on how to stream the fun:

Her calm demeanor and steadying presence in goal have made scoring on her a monumental task so far.
Dempsey Arsenault’s Two-Way Dominance
A two-time Tewaaraton Award winner in college, Dempsey Arsenault has proven she can take over a game at both ends of the field. She has been tenacious defensively by forcing turnovers and limiting opponents’ top scoring threats. But Arsenault has also shown her offensive firepower by using her speed and power dodging to knife through defenses and finish with authority around the cage.
Marie McCool’s Versatility
One of the most versatile performers in the league, Marie McCool has played nearly every position on the field. She has scored clutch goals as an attacker, won key possessions as a relentless defender, and even stepped into the circle to take critical draw controls. McCool’s overall excellence and ability to impact the game in so many ways has made her an MVP candidate despite not filling up the stat sheet in any one category.
While these have been some of the early standouts, the level of competition across the entire Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse field has been exceptional. Nearly every player has had signature moments, from Emily Garrity pirating away steals on defense to Stephanie Kot distinction firing in laser free position shots.
The unique draft format each week has allowed different strengths and skill sets to shine through in these dream-team lineups. Lacrosse fans can expect jaw-dropping plays and performances every time they tune in. The inaugural season has showcased the very best of women’s lacrosse.

Athletes Unlimited Giving Platform
In addition to providing exciting new professional sports leagues, Athletes Unlimited is also committed to creating positive change through active social responsibility initiatives. The organization recently launched the Athletes Unlimited Giving Platform to empower its players to support causes they are passionate about.
How the Giving Platform Works
The Athletes Unlimited Giving Platform allows fans to contribute directly to non-profit organizations chosen by AU players. Each active player in the lacrosse, volleyball, and softball leagues can select a cause or charity they wish to support. Donations made through the platform go directly to the player’s chosen organization.
Fans can visit the giving platform on the Athletes Unlimited website and choose which player campaigns they would like to contribute to. The platform makes giving simple through accepting one-time or recurring monthly donations. 100% of the funds go straight to the selected non-profit groups.
In addition to direct fan donations, Athletes Unlimited also commits to supporting the player campaigns. At the end of each AU season, the organization donates $10,000 amongst the top five player campaigns as determined by number of fan donations received.
AU Player Causes
AU players have selected wide-ranging causes to highlight through the giving platform. Many players have chosen to support charities focused on disadvantaged youth, LGBTQ+ support, and health research.
Lacrosse player Dempsey Arsenault is raising funds for Harlem Lacrosse, an academic and sports program that provides mentorship for at-risk youth. Softball player Amanda Lorenz has chosen the Ulman Foundation, which provides support for young adults impacted by cancer.
Fans can visit the giving platform to view and contribute to all player campaigns. The platform provides details on each player’s chosen organization and what the funds will be used for.
Empowering Player Activism
The Athletes Unlimited Giving Platform is a revolutionary way for fans to directly support causes targeted by players themselves. AU Chief Impact Officer Clarissa Witherspoon shared the organization’s vision behind this empowering initiative:
“The voices and values of AU players matter well beyond the playing field. The giving platform allows our remarkable athlete activists to champion change around issues important to them.”
By highlighting women player campaigns, Athletes Unlimited aims to further its mission of advancing equality and social justice. Fans can join in this mission by contributing to their favorite player’s chosen organization.
