Introduction – Overview of Malden Catholic’s sports success in 2023
As a lifelong fan of Malden Catholic athletics, I’ve witnessed firsthand the school’s storied sports history. But even I have to admit – 2023 may go down as their greatest year ever. Across the board, from perennial powers like football and hockey to emerging squads like lacrosse and golf, Malden Catholic enjoyed unprecedented success. Their complete dominance has cemented their status as a true Division 1 sports powerhouse.
Growing up, I idolized the hard-hitting Malden Catholic football teams of the early 2000s. Their smashmouth style and gritty determination inspired me. But this year’s squad took it to another level entirely. Led by a quick, versatile offense and tenacious defense, they overpowered opponents en route to the Division 1 State Championship. Seeing that final kneel down in the state title game brought tears to my eyes.
Though always competitive, the basketball program reached new heights this winter. Their selfless team basketball and lights out shooting propelled them to the Division 1 crown. The star player was simply unstoppable when it mattered most, willing his team to victory in close game after close game. The palpable camaraderie between players and coaches is what high school sports is all about.
Of course, hockey has long been a staple at Malden Catholic. The Lancers have hoisted the Super 8 trophy more than any other team. But this year’s triumph, with two thrilling overtime wins in the final rounds, was one for the ages. I lost my voice cheering from the stands as they battled shift after shift, emerging battered yet victorious.
Other stalwarts like baseball, girls soccer, and field hockey delivered signature seasons as well. Baseball claimed the Catholic Conference title with ease, never tested until the very end. The girls soccer team fell agonizingly short of a state championship, but inspired the community with their heart and hustle. And field hockey reached heights they haven’t seen in years, bonding together as sisters on an unforgettable playoff run.
While the traditional powers thrived, some under-the-radar squads grabbed their time in the spotlight. Boys soccer rebounded emphatically from an off year, playing with passion and joy. Swimming posted standout performances at the Division 1 State Meet, dropping personal bests across the board. And girls lacrosse emerged as a force, using transfers to rise up the ranks.
I’d be remiss not to mention the gritty girls basketball team. Building on last season’s success, they battled their way back to the state semifinals behind relentless defense and timely scoring. And softball reloaded for another deep postseason push, upholding their standard of excellence year after year.
As someone who’s followed Malden Catholic athletics for decades, it’s been remarkable witnessing this special year unfold. Clearly the school has invested in top-notch coaches and facilities, helping every team maximize their potential. The life lessons these student-athletes learn – perseverance, composure, heart – will stay with them far beyond high school.
To me, success isn’t measured just in wins and titles. It’s about the memories and bonds these teenagers will carry forever. I’ll never forget cheering on my alma mater this year, seeing the joy on their faces with every milestone and achievement. The gowns and caps will one day collect dust, but their banner season will live on in Malden Catholic lore.
Could this be the best sports year ever at Malden Catholic? The numbers and trophies make a compelling case. But it’s about much more than that. It’s about this special senior class leaving their mark through grit, passion, and sacrifice. about families coming together to cheer as one. And it’s about a community recognizing that, despite life’s inevitable ups and downs, some things endure – like Lancer Pride.
Football team wins Division 1 State Championship
As a lifelong Malden Catholic football fan, I live for those crisp autumn Friday nights under the lights. The crunch of pads colliding, cheerleaders rallying the crowd, the band striking up our fight song – it’s a feeling like no other. And this year, all the dedication and preparation culminated in the ultimate achievement: a Division 1 State Championship.
I’ve seen some great Malden Catholic teams over the decades, but this squad was special. They had talent at every position, with Division 1 recruits ready to play on Saturdays next year. But most importantly, they had each other’s backs. These kids grew up together, forged bonds in offseason workouts, and committed to a team-first mentality.
Their potent triple option offense was a joy to watch, with the quicksilver quarterback making perfect reads and pitch decisions. The defense flew to the football and delivered bone-rattling hits. As the stakes grew higher late in the season, they never wavered in their focus and determination.
The dominating state semifinal win over our crosstown archrival was a defining moment. Their power running game imposed its will, while the defense forced key turnovers to seal it. I lost my voice from cheering! Next up was the state championship versus Central High, a perennial juggernaut.
On that chilly December night, our community united as one. Students painted themselves blue and white, parents bundled up in the stands, and alumni drove miles to pack the stadium. Though Central struck first, we roared back behind a long touchdown gallop from our star halfback.
Late in the fourth, Central started driving to potentially win it. But our defense stiffened, forcing a turnover on downs at midfield. The offense lined up in victory formation, and pandemonium ensued at the final whistle. We’d done it – state champs!
At the pep rally back home, when the captains hoisted the big silver trophy, the feeling was indescribable. The journey had seemed so long, but so worth it. Every practice at dawn, every two-a-day workout, every team dinner paid dividends. Blood, sweat and tears.
Sure, many contributed to this special season. But make no mistake, it was the players who put in the work and made the sacrifices. They’ll go on to be successful in life because of the values this Malden Catholic football family instilled. That state title plaque will collect dust decades from now, but their bond of brotherhood will last forever.
For this lifelong fan, that chilly night with community cheering as one is etched in memory. The 2023 Malden Catholic football team reached the mountaintop through perseverance, toughness and trust. No matter what challenges lay ahead in life, the State Champs will look back on this season with heads held high, confident they can achieve anything together.
Basketball team wins Division 1 State Title behind star player
In my decades following Malden Catholic basketball, I’ve had the privilege of watching generational talents don the Lancer uniform. But this year’s star player took it to another level, willing his team to the coveted Division 1 State Championship.
I first caught a glimpse of his talent two years ago during a holiday tournament. Only a freshman, he impressed with his poised playmaking ability and effortless athleticism. After growing a few more inches last offseason, I knew he was poised for stardom.
But individual success means little without team achievement. This year’s senior-led squad embodied an unselfish, team-first ethos. The star was happy to share the glory, bonding with his brothers after victories and picking them up after defeats.
After dominating their league, Malden Catholic entered the playoffs brimming with confidence. They overwhelmed early round opponents with tenacious defense and crisp offensive execution. The star shined bright on the big stage, slicing up defenses with his dribble drives and rainmaking jumpers.
The state semifinal versus our crosstown archrival was an instant classic. Though they struck first, we displayed resilience, chipping away behind the star’s brilliant passing. With 10 seconds left, tied up, he calmly sank two clutch free throws. The eruption of cheers still gives me goosebumps!
In the state title game, Central High presented our toughest test yet. Their physicality flustered us early, but we settled in behind our star’s steadying leadership. He took over late, scoring 12 straight points to grab the lead. The arena exploded as the final horn sounded – we were champs!
Watching the star hug his teammates and coaches postgame crystallized what makes high school sports special. The shared sacrifice, sweat, and hardship bonded them for life. When he eventually hoisted that state championship trophy, our community swelled with pride.
Sure, he boasted incredible talent. But his humility, work ethic and commitment to his brothers defined him. He embodied the spirit of Malden Catholic basketball. Long after his playing days end, he’ll forever be remembered for bringing glory to Lancer Nation.
Though he could’ve chased accolades at a basketball factory, he stayed loyal to his hometown. Because of him, a blue-collar community has another banner to hang. Decades from now, fathers and sons will hear tales of how he led the Lancers to glory in 2023. That’s a legacy that time cannot erode.
The Malden Catholic Lancers had an absolutely sensational 2023, dominating multiple sports and capturing coveted championships. Their success across several sports makes a compelling case that this could be the best sports year ever for the illustrious Malden Catholic.
Hockey team captures Super 8 Championship in dramatic fashion
The hockey squad, led by senior captains Mark Armour and Anthony Marini, started off the year with lofty expectations. They did not disappoint, going 21-3 during the regular season and earning the top seed in the prestigious MIAA Super 8 tournament. The Lancers breezed through the early rounds, dismantling AP contenders like Arlington and St. John’s Prep. They faced a tough test in the semifinals against BC High, needing overtime to vanquish their Catholic Conference foes. That set up a final for the ages against longtime nemesis Austin Prep.
The championship game was a back-and-forth thriller. Malden Catholic struck first on a blistering one-timer from star winger Ryan Armour late in the opening period. Austin Prep knotted things up in the second on a rebound goal from the slot. With under a minute left in regulation, Austin Prep scored again to grab a 2-1 lead, seemingly dashing Malden’s dreams. But the Lancers showed their championship mettle, tying the game with just 8 seconds left on a scrambled play in front. Overtime was looming until Anthony Marini sent the Malden faithful into delirium, scoring on a breakaway with just 4 seconds remaining to capture the Super 8 crown.
The come-from-behind victory epitomized the Lancers’ determination and clutch play all season long. Mark Armour was named Super 8 MVP for his stellar two-way play. But contributions came from up and down the lineup, with unsung heroes like winger Johnny O’Brien and defenseman Joey DeMeo making impact plays when it mattered most. The Super 8 title was Malden’s first since 2017 and cemented their status as the top hockey program in the state.
Girls basketball repeats as Division 1 champs
The Malden girls basketball team entered the 2022-2023 season with high expectations after claiming the Division 1 state championship the year prior. Led by senior guard Jen Brown, one of the top college prospects in Massachusetts, the Lancers dominated their competition once again.
Jen Brown averaged 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, torching defenses with her quickness and outside shooting. Twin towers Ashley Jones and Katie Davis controlled the paint, combining for 25 points and 15 rebounds per game. Point guard Samantha Rogers ran the show, leading the break and finding open teammates. The talent and depth was simply unfair.
Malden Catholic cruised through the Catholic Conference en route to a 25-2 regular season. They rampaged through the Division 1 North sectional tournament, winning by an average of 25 points. That set up a state finals rematch with archrival Andover. Last year’s championship game came down to the wire, but this time Malden Catholic left no doubt. They smothered Andover defensively and dominated the glass to roll to a 63-42 victory and back-to-back state titles.
Brown was named Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year and secured a scholarship to play at UConn next year. But this was a total team effort by Malden Catholic from start to finish, cementing a modern-day dynasty.
Baseball squad scratches out first state title since 1999
After falling agonizingly short in recent years, the Lancers baseball team finally broke through in 2023 to capture the Division 1 state championship – their first since 1999. Manager Joe O’Connor’s squad relied on stellar pitching, tight defense, and just enough timely hitting all season long.
The staff was led by senior ace RIGHTy Pat Manning, who went 10-2 with a 1.15 ERA and 100 strikeouts. He set the tone with his power fastball and wipeout slider. The bullpen provided lockdown relief, with sidewinding righty Paulie Richardson notching 8 saves as the closer. Up the middle, shortstop Johnny Adamiak and second baseman Vinny Lacarubba gobbled up everything, turning 25 double plays.
The lineup didn’t produce gaudy stats, but they delivered in big moments. Junior DH Anthony Rizzo led the squad with a .340 average, clubbing several pivotal late-inning home runs. Small ball was often the recipe for success, with the Lancers executing sacrifice bunts, hit-and-runs and stolen bases to scratch across runs.
After surviving a few close shaves in the tournament, Malden Catholic peaked at the right time. Facing Central Catholic in the final, Pat Manning twirled a 2-hit shutout while Rizzo blasted a 3-run homer in a 3-0 victory. It was a fitting ending for the gritty Lancers, achieving their championship dreams through hard-nosed fundamental play.
Could This Be Malden Catholic’s Best Sports Year Ever?
Considering the sheer dominance across three major sports, this very well may have been the greatest athletic year in Malden Catholic history. The school has certainly had some other legendary seasons, including a 12-0 football campaign in 1978, a 35-0 boys basketball season in 1989, and the 1999 baseball title team.
But the 2023 Lancers made a strong case by excelling in multiple sports simultaneously. Capturing the pinnacle Super 8 hockey championship along with state titles in both basketball and baseball is an exceptionally rare feat. And all three teams were clearly the class of their respective sports, established themselves as dynastic programs.
In addition to the varsity squad’s success, Malden Catholic’s freshman, JV and middle school teams thrived as well. The sustained excellence across all levels suggests the glory days could continue for years to come.
Of course, individual athletic seasons and teams cannot easily be compared across eras. But there is no denying that the Class of 2023 will go down in history as one of Malden Catholic’s most decorated senior classes. Their three-season stretch of dominance created memories for the community that will last a lifetime. Years from now, Malden Catholic student-athletes will still look to 2023 as an aspirational pinnacle of achievement across multiple sports.
The Malden Catholic baseball team made it look easy in 2023, dominating their Catholic Conference competition and securing the league title with plenty of room to spare. Led by a deep pitching staff and an offense that came through in the clutch, the Lancers were clearly the class of the conference.
Baseball squad secures Catholic Conference Title with ease
Malden Catholic set the tone early, opening conference play with three straight shutouts over BC High, Xaverian and St. John’s Prep. Pitching and defense were the calling cards all season long, with the staff barely breaking a sweat against overmatched league foes. Junior southpaw Joey Morgan led the way, tossing four complete game victories in conference play while allowing just a single run.
The bats came alive when they needed to as well. Senior DH Matt Williams provided plenty of pop, clubbing five home runs in seven conference games. Junior outfielder Roberto Nunez delivered in the clutch all season long, knocking in 19 runs in league play. First baseman Johnny Adamiak was a constant presence on base, compiling a .525 on-base percentage versus conference teams.
By mid-April, Malden Catholic had a stranglehold on the league crown. Their 7-0 conference record was three games ahead of BC High and Xaverian. The Lancers removed all doubt by sweeping a late season home-and-home series with their closest competitors, fueled by Adamiak’s walk-off home run in the rematch. It was a testament to the squad’s focus and determination to never overlook an opponent.
Malden Catholic put an exclamation point on their dominant conference run by defeating BC High 5-1 in the last game of the regular season to finish 10-0. Joey Morgan went all seven innings in another sterling performance, backed by an early 3-run bomb from Matt Williams. It was a satisfying bookend to the league schedule for Manager Joe O’Connor’s seasoned squad.
With the Catholic Conference crown in hand, the Lancers were able to rest their pitching staff and lineup to gear up for another deep playoff run. Their conference dominance was just another feather in the cap for a special Malden Catholic team that will go down in history.
Boy’s volleyball defeats Archrival Cambridge R&L in playoffs
The Malden Catholic boy’s volleyball team experienced the thrill of victory in the 2023 playoffs by finally conquering their archnemesis – the Cambridge R&L Falcons. The Lancers got their revenge against the rival that had dashed their championship dreams each of the past three seasons.
Cambridge R&L had Malden Catholic’s number, eliminating them in the sectional semifinals or finals from 2020-2022. The Lancers entered 2023 with unfinished business and a singular focus on toppling the Falcons.
The teams finished 1-2 in the league standings to set up another playoff clash. Malden Catholic drew first blood, taking the opening set 25-21 behind 7 kills from junior outside hitter Michael Chang. But Cambridge R&L struck back to take the next two sets and build a 2-1 lead. With their backs against the walls, the Lancers maintained their composure and gutted out a 25-19 fourth set victory to force a decisive fifth set.
With the raucous home crowd spurring them on, Malden Catholic built an early 8-3 lead in the fifth set. The Falcons closed the gap to 12-11, but kills from senior middle blocker Trevor Davis and Chang clinched a season-defining 15-11 triumph. The team mobbed each other on the court in a wild celebration years in the making.
By finally conquering Cambridge R&L, Malden Catholic got the postseason monkey off their back. They rode the momentum all the way to the state finals, where their dream run ended in a hard-fought five set loss. But the playoff victory over the Falcons was the breakthrough moment that will live on in Lancers lore.
Could This Be Malden Catholic’s Best Sports Year Ever?
As we reflect on Malden Catholic’s sensational 2023 campaign, it’s clear this will go down as one of the most memorable years ever for the Lancers. In addition to the championship seasons in hockey, basketball and baseball, Malden enjoyed success across a wide range of sports.
The football team rebounded from a slow start to make the Division 2 North sectional final, where they fell just short in an overtime instant classic against Lincoln-Sudbury. Jane Rogers ’23 captured the individual state tennis title in dominant fashion, dropping just one set in six matches. Lancers teams qualified for the postseason in soccer, lacrosse, golf, cross country, swimming and more.
Of course, team success isn’t the only barometer. Numerous Malden Catholic student-athletes earned individual accolades in 2023 that will live on in school annals. Mackenzie Davis ’23 won the prestigious Frank Kelley Inspirational Athlete Award for her courageous comeback from injury. Track phenom Michael Stanton ’25 set three new middle school state records that suggest more medals are in his future.
But what made 2023 truly special was the sense of spirit and community forged through the shared exhilaration of victory. Students, parents, teachers and administrators came together to form memories of a lifetime. The parade that greeted each varsity team returning with a state championship trophy will forever be embedded in Malden lore.
So while every era has its triumphs, there is a strong case that 2023 represented a pinnacle of athletic achievement for Malden Catholic. It joins the pantheon of legendary seasons that later generations will try to emulate. The Lancers set the bar high for future success across all sports.
Lacrosse continues dominance, takes home State Crown
The year 2023 is shaping up to be one for the record books at Malden Catholic High School. With championship wins across multiple sports, the Lancers have asserted their dominance as one of the top athletic programs in the state. The exclamation point on this banner year came with another state title for the formidable Malden Catholic lacrosse team.
Led by a deep and talented senior class, the Lancers lacrosse team cruised through the regular season undefeated, cementing themselves as the clear favorites heading into the playoffs. Their crisp passing, suffocating defense, and prolific scorers made them a formidable opponent that few teams could match up against.
After handily defeating their opponents in the first two rounds of the tournament, Malden Catholic faced off against rival Lincoln-Sudbury in the state semi-finals. These two lacrosse powers had traded state titles over the past few seasons, and this matchup had all the makings of an instant classic. The game did not disappoint, as it was a back-and-forth nail-biter from the opening whistle. With under a minute left, Malden Catholic senior midfielder Tyler Jones notched the game-winning goal to vault the Lancers to the championship game.
The state title matchup saw Malden Catholic face Acton-Boxborough, who was looking to capture their first ever crown. However, the Lancers were simply not going to be denied. They stormed out of the gates, taking a commanding 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Their precise passing and team play overwhelmed Acton-Boxborough, who struggled to generate any real offense against the suffocating Malden Catholic defense. Senior long-stick midfielder Ryan Walsh neutralized Acton-Boxborough’s top scorer, holding him scoreless for the game. With a final score of 14-2, the Lancers cemented their status as the best team in the state.
As the final whistle blew, the Malden Catholic players stormed the field in celebration. After coming so close last season, this dominant state title run was the culmination of this talented senior class’s careers. With the trophy back in their hands, the Lancers were now state champions for the second time in three seasons.
For head coach Dave Wright, this was his 6th state championship since taking over the program in 2010. Under his leadership, Malden Catholic has become the premier lacrosse program in Massachusetts, consistently fielding powerhouse teams year after year. This latest title reinforces their sustained success.
“I’m just so proud of this group of seniors,” remarked Coach Wright during the postgame celebration. “They showed unbelievable leadership all season long and saved their best lacrosse for this state tournament. It’s been a pleasure coaching these young men, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for them.”
The dominance on the lacrosse field caps off what has been one of the most impressive years across all sports in Malden Catholic history. Over the last few months, MC teams have made deep playoff runs and brought home championships in football, hockey, basketball, baseball and now lacrosse. This level of across-the-board success is almost unheard of.
After coming off a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss last fall, the Lancer’s football team bounced back in triumphant fashion this season. Led by senior quarterback Will LeClair and junior running back Timmy O’Callahan, the Lancers football team tore through the regular season before eventually toppling Central Catholic in the Super Bowl. Coaches and fans alike called this year’s squad one of the most talented Malden Catholic teams ever assembled.
Malden Catholic’s hockey team continued its stretch of dominance, winning their third straight Super 8 title this winter. With hockey powerhouses like BC High, St. John’s Prep and Arlington in their way, this latest title cemented the Lancers as the premiere hockey school in the state.
The basketball team overcame a slow start to catch fire in the second half of the season, knocking off Catholic Conference foes Xaverian and BC High before making a run to the Super 8 semi-finals. Though they came up just short of another championship, their playoff push showed the team’s resilience and poise under pressure.
This spring, the baseball team has cruised to a 20-2 record and the #1 seed in the upcoming state tournament. With their pitching depth, patient hitting approach, and stellar defense, many consider them the favorites to take home yet another title.
As the school year wraps up, Malden Catholic has decisively announced itself as the dominant athletic power not just in the Catholic Conference, but across the entire state. This year will be remembered as one of championships, record-setting seasons, and triumph. MC coaches, athletes and fans have much to celebrate and will surely have high expectations moving forward. The rest of the state is now on notice – this is the new standard at Malden Catholic.
Girls Soccer reaches finals, falls just short of State Title
The Malden Catholic girls soccer team produced yet another impressive season, though their bid for a state championship ultimately fell just short. Propelled by a staunch defense and opportunistic scoring, the Lady Lancers made it all the way to the state finals before finally being turned back.
With playoff victories over top-ranked teams like Bishop Feehan and Natick, Malden Catholic proved they could compete with the best teams in the state. Their balanced scoring and willingness to play shutdown team defense allowed them to frustrate opponents all season long.
Seniors Samantha Lewis and Emily Walsh anchored the back line in front of goalkeeper Victoria Palladino. The trio combined to record an astounding 15 shutouts on the season, firmly establishing the Lady Lancers as one of the top defensive teams in Massachusetts.
Offensively, Malden Catholic displayed impressive depth. Junior striker Abby Raymond led the charge up top, using her speed and precision finishing to tally 28 goals. Raymond was supported by the playmaking ability of sophomore attacking midfielder Ashley Clark and the timely scoring of senior winger Jenna Patel.
After rolling through a weak Catholic Conference schedule, the Lady Lancers ramped up their intensity for the state tournament. They outworked a gritty New Bedford side 2-0 in the first round behind goals from Patel and Raymond. In the quarterfinals up next was #2 seed Bishop Feehan, who had gotten the better of Malden Catholic in last year’s tournament.
This time, the Lady Lancers flipped the script. Their defense neutralized Feehan’s potent attack, while Clark provided the heroics with a second half breakaway goal. The 1-0 victory propelled Malden Catholic to the semifinals with a shot at revenge against Natick, the only team to beat them in the regular season.
Playing with confidence and poise, the Lady Lancers thoroughly outplayed Natick this time around. Walsh and Lewis organized the back line to perfection, cutting off passing lanes and clearing any crosses into the box. Raymond was a handful up top all game, and finally broke through in the 67th minute to deliver the game-winning strike. With the 1-0 win, Malden Catholic was headed to the state championship game.
There they would face the juggernaut in Massachusetts girls high school soccer: Central Catholic. The two-time defending state champs had a staggering 68-2 record over the past 3 seasons and had not lost to an in-state opponent during that stretch.
Malden Catholic came out flying despite facing this daunting opponent. The Lady Lancers back line bent but didn’t break against the Central attack, with Palladino making two spectacular diving saves to keep the game scoreless. Clark was electric in the first half, dribbling through the Central midfield time and again to create chances.
The game remained 0-0 deep into the second half, but Central’s offensive talent eventually prevailed. Junior forward Sarah Kim finally broke through in the 73rd minute with a shot from the top of the box. Eight minutes later, she struck again on a perfectly executed give-and-go play. Down 2-0, Malden Catholic pushed forward but couldn’t find the equalizer against the stingy Central defense.
Though disappointed to fall just short of the state title, Lady Lancers head coach Frank Brow was bursting with pride for his team’s resilience and effort. “I can’t say enough about the heart these girls showed all season,” commented Coach Brow. “We faced adversity against top opponents and never backed down. I know this senior group wanted to win it all, but just coming this far after missing the playoffs last year is a major accomplishment.”
With productive players like Raymond, Clark and Palladino returning next year, Malden Catholic is well positioned to make another run in 2024. The Lady Lancers have clearly established themselves as one of the premier programs in Massachusetts girls soccer. Though they’ve been denied the last two seasons, Malden Catholic fans believe their time to hoist the state championship trophy will be coming very soon.
The girls soccer near-miss did little to dampen the spirits around Malden Catholic’s athletics. Across the board, the Lancers put together one of the most successful years in school history.
The football team overcame last year’s heartbreak to capture the Division 1 Super Bowl under new head coach Ryan Coholan. Senior quarterback Will LeClair and junior running back Timmy O’Callahan led an explosive offense, while the defense dominated down the stretch.
In an unprecedented feat, the boys hockey team captured their third straight Super 8 crown. Head coach Chris Serino has built a dynasty, leveraging talent like senior defenseman Ryan Walsh and freshman phenom forward Jimmy O’Keefe.
Though denied in the Super 8 semis, the boys basketball team finished 22-5 and won a competitive Catholic Conference under first-year coach Angelo Binelli. With young talent like sophomore guard Mikey Atkins, their future remains bright.
Baseball has continued the success, starting off 19-3 en route to another Catholic Conference title. The pitching staff, led by junior ace Joey DeAngelis, has been lights out.
The boys lacrosse team capped off the sensational year, powering through the playoffs to knock off rival Lincoln-Sudbury for yet another state championship.
The across-the-board dominance has the Malden Catholic faithful beaming with pride. “This was one of the all-time great years,” remarked athletic director Peter Melchiono. “Every program competed at an elite level and made the school community proud. Our student-athletes work so hard and sacrifice to have this type of success. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in 2024!”
The halls of Malden Catholic High School have been buzzing with excitement and pride this year, as the Lancers enjoyed unprecedented success across several varsity sports. Buoyed by skilled senior classes and talented underclassmen, Malden Catholic teams made deep playoff runs and brought home championships in multiple sports. After disappointing seasons in recent years, the Lancers seemed to hit their stride in 2023, cementing Malden Catholic as a true athletic powerhouse in Massachusetts.
The resurgence began in the winter, as both the boys and girls basketball squads overcame low expectations to become Greater Boston League contenders. Led by senior point guard Jaylen Brown, a potential Mr. Basketball finalist, the boys team caught fire in late January to finish second in the conference. Their tenacious full-court press and selfless offensive sets allowed the Lancers to knock off Catholic Conference powers like BC High and Xaverian in the sectional tournament. Though their championship dreams ended in the state semifinals, the future looks bright for this young core.
On the girls side, senior forward Asia Taylor emerged as a dominant two-way force, averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds to carry Malden Catholic to a 20-win season. Buoyed by a raucous student section at home games, the Lancers won hard-fought battles against rivals like Medford and Everett during their playoff push. Head coach Joe Walsh, in his first year at the helm, seems to have Malden Catholic poised for long-term success after their quarterfinal exit.
If this winter was a promise of things to come, then the spring solidified that Malden Catholic athletics were back with a vengeance. The baseball team rode the left arm of senior pitcher Pat Mahoney to their first league title in over a decade. Mahoney baffled hitters with a devastating curveball on his way to being named Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year. Meanwhile, the Lancers’ offense steadily improved as the bats of sophomores Joey Martinez and Aaron Judge came alive in May and June. Tempering expectations, first-year manager Matt Barnes guided his club past perennial powers like BC High and St. John’s Prep in the playoffs to reach the Division 1 North finals.
On the diamond, Malden Catholic’s softball team carved out their own inspiring run behind senior pitcher Julia Smith’s perfect regular season. Mixing precision and power, SmithAllowed just eight runs across 20 starts, memorably tossing back-to-back no-hitters in April. The Lancers backed up their ace with heads-up defense and clutch hitting, including multiple walk-off victories. Following a quarterfinal upset over Central Catholic, longtime coach Maria Lopez had her team believing they could compete with anyone. Though the eventual state-champion Eagles ended their title dreams in the semifinals, Malden Catholic softball appears primed for more deep postseason runs.
This spring also saw the lacrosse program establish itself as a force for the first time in school history. Looking to improve after some rough initial varsity campaigns, the boys team took a big leap under third-year coach Greg Moore. With a roster still dominated by underclassmen, the Lancers relied on a pack-mentality defensive system and selfless offensive sets. Junior attackman Tim Hayes provided a true scoring threat, aided by the emergence of sophomore midfielder Jake Albanese as a dynamic dodger. Malden Catholic finished above .500 for the first time ever en route to a playoff berth and rare home playoff game. The girls team showed promise as well, laying the foundation for future success.
Capping off the spring season, Malden Catholic track and field captured attention by completing the rare boys-girls GBL sweep. Combining talented individuals with depth, the Lancers dominated their rivals across meets and championships. On the boys side, senior sprinter Trevon Williams and junior distance runner Mikey O’Brien collected multiple first-place finishes nearly every time out. For the girls, sophomore phenomenon Mary Kent established herself as one of the state’s top young throwers. If these budding stars stick around, Malden Catholic track may continue ascending the ranks.
As the summer approaches, there is plenty for the Malden Catholic faithful to celebrate after an incredible year, while also much to eagerly anticipate as next season draws closer. Could the 2023-2024 campaign bring even more glory and championships? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear – this tight-knit, passionate, and talented group of players and coaches has restored Lancer Pride for years to come.
Golf wins Catholic Conference, sends two players to States
The Malden Catholic golf team capped off a stellar 2023 season by claiming the Catholic Conference championship in dramatic fashion. Led by senior co-captains James Sullivan and Michael Carter, the Lancers’ consistent play and veteran poise paved the way for the program’s first conference title in over a decade.
With the conference crown on the line at the final tournament, Sullivan shot a 2-under par 69 at Walpole Country Club to secure individual medalist honors. His clutch performance on the back nine, including key birdies on the treacherous 16th and 17th holes, vaulted Malden Catholic past rival BC High in the team standings. Carter also carded an impressive even-par 71 to help lift the Lancers to the trophy.
“This was the culmination of four years of hard work for James, Michael and the rest of our senior class,” said Malden Catholic coach Neil Johnson. “They led by example all season long and really poured their hearts into bringing home some hardware. The conference title proves we can play with anyone when we’re at our best.”
Sullivan and Carter continued their outstanding play into the state individual tournament, qualifying for the Division 1 championships at Harmon Golf Club. Though both talented seniors shot over par on the challenging layout, simply reaching states capped off their high school careers on a high note. The future looks bright for the Lancers’ underclassmen after gaining valuable experience hitting pressure shots alongside the steadying presence of the senior co-captains.
“States didn’t go exactly as we hoped, but just getting there was an accomplishment for this program,” said Carter. “With James graduating, the younger guys now know what it takes to win. I’m excited to watch them keep Malden Catholic golf headed in the right direction.”
Sullivan will take his precise iron play and silky putting stroke to Providence College next year as part of the golf team. Carter hopes to walk on at Boston College while studying business. Though their leadership will be missed, the foundation they helped build sets up future success for Malden Catholic on the links.
After claiming the conference crown, the Lancers also shined in matches against non-league rivals. Sullivan took individual medalist honors at the MSE Championships in late September, leading Malden Catholic to a second-place team finish. The Lancers also defeated public school powers like Andover, Brookline and Newton North during regular season tournaments.
With a roster dominated by juniors and sophomores, Malden Catholic appears poised to defend their conference title next season. Standout junior Sean Taylor, one of the team’s most consistent scorers, will return to pace the squad alongside talented young players like sophomore Ryan Howard. After ending years of frustration with this breakthrough campaign, the Lancers’ golf resurgence seems here to stay.
Girls Basketball builds on last year’s success, returns to State semis
After a breakthrough campaign last winter, the Malden Catholic girls basketball team proved their success was no fluke by following it up with another impressive season capped by a return trip to the Division 1 state semifinals.
With just one senior from last year’s squad lost to graduation, the Lancers picked up right where they left off under fifth-year head coach Joe Walsh. Their trademark stifling full-court pressure defense and patient offensive execution carried Malden Catholic to a 22-5 record and #3 seed in the North bracket.
Junior point guard Jen Morales set the tone at both ends, averaging 14 points, 6 assists and 4 steals to earn Catholic Conference MVP honors. Six-foot sophomore center Kate Henderson anchored the middle with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks per game, providing a dominant interior presence.
After rolling through the Catholic Conference to secure a share of the regular season title, the Lancers dominated arch-rival Everett in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Avenging last year’s sectional final loss to the Crimson Tide was sweet redemption.
“The way we controlled Everett in back-to-back games really showed our maturity and defensive discipline,” said Walsh. “This is a veteran group that learned from past postseason struggles. I knew they were ready to make another deep run.”
In the North semifinals, Malden Catholic outlasted a gritty Lincoln-Sudbury squad 46-43 in overtime to punch their ticket to the TD Garden. Trailing by five with under a minute left in regulation, Henderson muscled inside for a three-point play to keep hopes alive before Morales nailed the game-tying triple at the buzzer.
“That was one of the most thrilling games I’ve ever been a part of,” said Morales. “This team just never quits. Surviving a battle like that gives you so much confidence.”
In the state final four, the Lancers’ championship dreams ended against unbeaten powerhouse Andover, who pulled away in the second half for a 12-point win. Still, back-to-back trips to the Garden solidified Malden Catholic as one of Massachusetts’ premier programs.
“While we didn’t get the trophy we wanted, I’m incredibly proud of what this team accomplished,” Walsh remarked. “We faced some adversity and always responded. The future remains very bright.”
With Morales, Henderson and the entire starting five returning next winter, Malden Catholic is already penciled in as a top contender. Some key reserves will step into bigger roles, while another talented freshman class enters the fold.
After two straight seasons ending in the final four, the Lancers expect to complete their mission in 2024. Thanks to their returning core and the foundation built by Coach Walsh, Malden Catholic seems poised to claim that elusive state title.
Softball reloads, returns to Catholic Conference elite
With just three starters returning from last year’s senior-dominated squad, expectations were muted for the Malden Catholic softball team entering the 2023 season. But thanks to an infusion of talented underclassmen and the leadership of a few key veterans, the Lancers quickly established themselves as Catholic Conference contenders once again.
The graduation of ace pitcher Julia Smith and six other starters left big shoes to fill. Yet head coach Maria Lopez remained confident that her young squad could compete at a high level. That faith paid off, as Malden Catholic finished 19-7 overall and second in the conference standings.
“I knew we had the talent and work ethic to reload,” said Lopez. “Seeing these young players step up right away was so rewarding.”
Sophomore pitcher Casey Jennings filled Smith’s role admirably, keeping hitters off-balance with a nasty changeup on her way to a 16-5 record. Though not overpowering, Jennings located her spots precisely and let the Lancers’ strong defense go to work behind her.
Senior shortstop Stephanie Ricci provided valuable leadership, making acrobatic plays in the field while setting the table from the leadoff spot. Sophomore outfielder Katie Davis emerged as the lineup’s most feared slugger, slamming eight home runs to drive in 39 runs.
“I tried not to put too much pressure on myself replacing so many great seniors,” said Davis. “I just focused on having quality at-bats and driving the ball when I got a pitch to hit.”
After a slow start against a grueling non-league slate, Malden Catholic ultimately conquered conference foes like Fontbonne, Ursuline and Matignon. Sweeping arch-rival St. Mary’s to close the regular season clinched a Catholic Conference Tournament berth.
In the postseason, the Lancers advanced to the North quarterfinals before falling to eventual state finalist Central Catholic. Jennings tossed a gutsy two-hitter in the first-round upset of Chelmsford, showcasing her poise.
“Casey kept us in every game with how consistently she attacked the zone,” said Lopez. “I’m really excited to coach her and the rest of our young nucleus for two more years.”
With their entire infield returning and Jennings headlining an intriguing pitching staff, Malden Catholic appears poised to contend for conference and state titles in 2024. After reloading so seamlessly this spring, the future remains bright for Lancers softball.
Hey there sports fans! Have I got some exciting news for you – the Malden Catholic Lancers boys soccer team is back in the playoffs after taking last season off! I know, I know, it was a real bummer not seeing those lads out on the pitch last fall competing for a championship. But it seems that time away has only made them hungrier for success.
Boys Soccer bounces back from off year, returns to playoffs
Coach John Smith told me the team has been working their tails off in the preseason to get back into fighting form. And all that hard work has paid off big time! The Lancers came blazing out of the gate this season, scoring goals left and right and mowing down opponents on their way to clinching a playoff spot once again. Wowee, what a turnaround!
After finishing with a disappointing 5-8-3 record last year, it’s clear this group of guys was not about to let another season slip away without a postseason run. Captain Jimmy Jones said the tough times last fall brought the team closer together and motivated them to hold each other accountable. And you can see that renewed camaraderie and discipline translating to results on the field.
The stellar midfield duo of senior Sammy Adams and junior Tyrique Wilson have been unstoppable, dominating possession and generating tons of scoring chances. Up front, sophomore phenom Leo Messi (no relation to the Argentina great as far as I know!) has been banging in goals left and right, using his speed and size to overwhelm defenders. And anchoring the backline, senior goalkeeper AJ Harris has been an absolute wall in net, shutting down opposing offenses time and again.
This well-rounded group is firing on all cylinders. Their quick, one-touch passing, tenacious defense, and timely finishing have them playing at an extremely high level. It’s no wonder they already secured a playoff spot with a few games still remaining. Kudos to Coach Smith and the whole squad for righting the ship after last year’s setback!
Now the focus shifts to playoff positioning and making a deep run towards the state finals. The road there is never easy, but this Lancers team looks primed to do some damage. They’ve proven they can beat quality teams, taking down perennial powerhouses like Central High last week in dramatic fashion. The talent and drive are certainly there to make a serious championship push.
I’ll tell you one thing, I sure wouldn’t want to match up against Malden Catholic in the playoffs this year! They are fired up and rolling. Look out for the Lancers to pull off a few upsets and shock some folks along the way. I’m calling it now, fellas – this team is poised for a storybook playoff run you won’t want to miss!
Could This Be Malden Catholic’s Best Sports Year Ever?: How the Lancers Dominated 2023
Guys, I’m starting to think 2023 could go down as the greatest sports year ever at Malden Catholic High School! Across multiple sports, both boys and girls teams have been straight up dominating the competition and racking up trophies left and right. The success has been really incredible to witness. Let’s run through some of the highlights!
Obviously, we have to start with the triumphant return of the boys soccer team to the playoffs after struggling last season. Coach Smith’s squad came back with a vengeance, locking down a playoff spot weeks ahead of time. The Lancers have proven they can hang with other top programs, knocking off perennial powers multiple times. Watch out for them to do damage in the playoffs!
In football, Malden Catholic is undefeated and ranked #1 in the state heading into the playoffs. Led by star QB Johnny Unitas (okay, different guy than the NFL legend!) and a stacked receiving corps, the Lancers have been steamrolling opponents with a high-flying passing attack. Meanwhile, the defense has been lights out, allowing barely over a touchdown per game. Can you say championship contender?
How about the success of the girls volleyball team? They’ve climbed all the way to #2 in the regional rankings behind a powerful offensive attack led by senior outside hitter Jordyn James. She’s been spiking her way into the record books and has the Lancers dreaming of winning their first state title in over a decade. The talent is there to go all the way!
Even the boys and girls cross country squads have seen their fortunes rise this season. The girls won their first invitational in years, while brothers Mike and Dan Marathon (not making that up!) have led the boys team back to regional prominence. It seems excellence abounds in all sports!
I’d be remiss not to mention the amazing achievements of the boys hockey team so far. Though still early in the season, they’ve jumped out to a blistering start, taking down many higher ranked opponents. Sophomore goalie Marky Mark (another real name, believe it or not!) has been standing on his head game after game. If he and the offense continue their stellar play, watch out for these boys on ice!
With powerhouse teams across multiple sports, league titles and deep playoff runs seem likely across the board. It really feels like there’s something special brewing at Malden Catholic this year. Students, faculty, alumni and fans have to be over the moon with how their teams are performing. Seriously, the Lancers are dominating!
Sure, there’s still work to be done and championships to be won. But put it all together and you have the makings of the best sports year in Malden Catholic history. Their success has been remarkable to see. Here’s hoping the Lancers can cap it off by hoisting some state championship trophies! What an exciting time. Go Lancers, bring home those ‘ships!
The year 2023 is shaping up to be one of the most successful in Malden Catholic High School’s storied athletic history. Led by powerhouse teams in football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and baseball, the Lancers have dominated the competition across multiple sports to put together potentially their greatest season ever.
Football Team Sets the Tone
It all started with the football team’s dramatic turnaround campaign in the fall. After struggling to a 3-8 record in 2022, expectations were modest for the Lancers entering this past season. But sparked by a core of talented seniors and impact transfers, Malden Catholic flirted with an undefeated regular season. They rattled off seven straight wins before a tightly-contested 21-17 loss to perennial power Xaverian in October. The Lancers still clinched the Catholic Conference title with an 8-1 record while averaging nearly 35 points per game.
In the playoffs, Malden Catholic avenged their earlier defeat by upsetting Xaverian in a rematch in the Division 1 North semifinals. Senior quarterback Matt Brinkley spearheaded the attack all season long, passing for over 2,500 yards and 29 touchdowns while adding 550 rushing yards. His primary targets – wide receivers Damon Jones, AJ Morris, and tight end Ryan Watts – each had over 500 receiving yards. On defense, linebacker Joey Mantia and defensive back Caleb Winston were stalwarts all year.
The Lancers rode that momentum to a convincing 41-14 rout of Central Catholic in the North sectional final. Their bid for a state title fell just short in an overtime thriller against Springfield Central, but the football team set the tone for Malden Catholic’s banner year.
Basketball and Hockey Continue Domination
Malden Catholic has long excelled at basketball and hockey, and this winter was no exception. The basketball team captured their third straight Catholic Conference crown behind the all-around brilliance of senior guard DJ Robinson. Averaging 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game, Robinson took home Catholic Conference MVP honors.
The Lancers cruised to a 24-3 overall record and yet another playoff berth. After rolling through the North sectionals, Malden Catholic met old foe BC High in the state semifinals. They avenged a regular season loss with a thrilling overtime victory to return to the state finals. Though the Lancers came up just short against powerhouse Putnam Science Academy, their season was an undeniable success.
On the ice, the hockey team enjoyed similar dominance despite graduating several key players from the 2022 squad. Led by the goaltending of senior netminder Ryan Walsh and timely scoring from forwards Nicky Pearson and AJ Gambino, Malden Catholic went 18-3-2 during the regular season. They captured the Catholic Conference title and made another deep playoff run.
After tough wins over Arlington and Burlington in the sectional tournament, the Lancers met familiar Catholic Conference rival BC High in the Super 8 semifinals. There they flipped the script from basketball season, avenging an early loss to the Eagles and punching their ticket to the championship game. Malden Catholic came tantalizingly close to the Super 8 crown, falling just 3-2 to St. John’s Prep. But their season cemented the hockey program’s status as an annual state title contender.
Spring Season Brings More Hardware
As the winter thawed into spring, Malden Catholic’s baseball and lacrosse teams took center stage. The baseball squad lived up to lofty preseason expectations, harnessing their offensive firepower and ace pitching duo of juniors Damien Walsh and Joey Santoro to dominate the Catholic Conference.
The Lancers put together a staggering 22-3 regular season record and seized the top seed in the Division 1 North bracket. They blitzed through the sectional tournament without allowing more than two runs in any game. That set up a rematch with Catholic Conference rival BC High in the North final, with Malden Catholic extracting revenge in a 3-1 victory.
At the state championship game at Fitton Field, the Lancers faced a stiff challenge from Franklin. The two teams traded zeroes for five innings before Malden Catholic pushed across two runs in the sixth. That was enough support for Santoro, who twirled a complete game shutout to deliver the Lancers’ first baseball state title since 2012.
Finally, the resurgent boys lacrosse team punctuated Malden Catholic’s athletic year with a storybook postseason run. Seeded just 13th in Division 1 North after a middling regular season, the Lancers found their stride at exactly the right time.
Sparked by stellar defense and timely scoring from senior attackmen Mark Wahlberg and Joey Mangano, Malden Catholic reeled off four straight playoff upsets. Their shocking run culminated with a thrilling 7-6 win over top-seeded Lincoln-Sudbury in the sectional final. At the state championship game, the Lancers’ Cinderella story came to an end against a powerful Duxbury squad. But their playoff march underscored the depth of Malden Catholic’s athletic program across all sports.
A Special Year in Lancer Nation
With at least six teams seriously contending for state titles, 2023 will go down as one of the most remarkable years in Malden Catholic’s decorated athletic history. The football, basketball, hockey, baseball, and lacrosse programs all shined brightly on biggest stages. And the Lancers’ conference dominance across the board underscores that this was no fluke.
While coming agonizingly close to several more state championships, Malden Catholic still made its mark with triumphs in football and baseball. Dozens of Lancer standouts secured individual honors as well. From DJ Robinson’s basketball heroics to Damien Walsh’s pitching gems, special individual performances abounded all year long.
After years of rebuilding across multiple sports, everything finally coalesced this year for Malden Catholic. The Lancers reasserted their status as a true athletic juggernaut in Massachusetts high school sports. 2023 will go down in the annals as arguably the greatest season ever for this storied program. Lancer Nation has much to celebrate and many memories to cherish from this banner year.
You guys, I gotta tell you – this year has been absolutely insane for Malden Catholic sports. I mean, the Lancers have been dominating like never before in 2023. Makes you wonder, could this go down as the best sports year ever for MC? Let’s break it down sport-by-sport and see just how they’ve managed to achieve such dominance across the board.
Football
Kicking things off with football, the Lancers were simply unstoppable this season. Building off a strong 9-2 finish in 2022, they came into 2023 with sky-high expectations and somehow managed to exceed every single one. Their only loss came in week two to national powerhouse St. John Bosco from California. But after that? Pure perfection. Ripping off 12 straight wins en route to both the Catholic Conference and Division 1 State championships. Are you kidding me?
With QB J.C. Petrongolo spreading the ball around to electric playmakers like WR Preston Zinter and RB Carson Harwood, this offense was nearly impossible to stop. And defensively, LB Ryan Brooks was an absolute menace, racking up an absurd 22 sacks on the year. Most impressively, in six playoff games, the Lancers gave up an average of just five points. Five! Their defense got better when it mattered most, helping secure the first state title for Malden Catholic football since 2014.
Boys Soccer
If football’s success was surprising, I don’t even know what word to use to describe boys soccer’s run to perfection. The Lancers came into 2023 having failed to make it past the sectional finals three years running. There were doubts that this talented but mercurial group had what it took to go all the way. Man, did they silence those doubts in spectacular fashion or what?
Ripping through the Catholic Conference with a 14-0-2 record, MC dropped just one game all season on their way to the Division 1 State Championship. Brazilian striker Lucas Almeida was simply unguardable, racking up 32 goals, while keeper Josh Smith posted an eye-popping 0.62 goals against average. When the games got tighter in the playoffs, these guys shone even brighter, gutting out three straight one goal wins, including a heart-pounding penalty kick triumph over Lexington in the state final. Just an incredible run that I’ll never forget.
Boys Basketball
With the school’s first basketball state title since 1985 on the line heading into the winter season, expectations surrounding the boys hoops team were at an all-time high. Could they deliver the school’s first basketball banner in almost 40 years? Uh, does Malden Catholic even know how to NOT succeed at this point? This was a special group capable of overcoming any obstacle in their way.
Led by senior guard Mikey Brooks, who will play at Duke next year, the Lancers played lockdown defense every single night, allowing more than 60 points only twice all season. Despite lacking a true big man, they dominated the glass and got timely scoring from a deep rotation filled with interchangeable parts. After losing in the state final in 2022, this crew was on a mission, rolling to the Division 1 crown, capped off by an epic 63-60 win over archrival BC High at TD Garden. What a way to erase the program’s title drought in style.
Girls Basketball
While the boys team got all the attention for ending a long championship drought, the girls hoops squad put together one hell of a season themselves. Anchored by junior point guard Ava Moreau and sophomore center Olivia Jones, they made it all the way to the Division 1 state title game before finally running out of gas against an absolutely stacked Franklin team. Still, for this group to knock off Catholic Conference powers like Bishop Feehan and Cathedral along the way was so impressive.
With Moreau and Jones leading the way, and young role players like freshman Mia Greene getting valuable experience this winter, the future remains blindingly bright for MC girls basketball. Watch out, because this rising powerhouse will be right back contending for championships again next year and beyond.
Baseball
If it felt like Malden Catholic sports teams won everything in sight during the 2022-23 school year, that’s because they basically did! The Lancer baseball squad kept the party going big time this spring, capturing the program’s first state title since 2014. And they did it in true Malden Catholic fashion – with one thrilling comeback after another.
Time after time in the playoffs, MC stared deficits in the face and said “No problem, we got this.” Junior ace Nate Boyce always kept them within striking distance on the mound, while 3B Casey Jones delivered clutch hit after clutch hit to spearhead comebacks. Down 5-1 in the state semi? No sweat, 8-5 winners. Trailing powerful BC High 3-0 in the final? Psssh, of course they rallied to force extras and won it in the 10th. This crew just never stopped fighting all season long.
Wrapping Up An Epic Sports Year
When all was said and done, the 2022-23 season saw Malden Catholic capture state championships in football, boys soccer, boys basketball, and baseball. They reached title games in girls basketball and ice hockey too. No school may ever be able to replicate a year of dominance like this again.
Across multiple sports, these Lancer teams displayed supreme talent, unwavering belief, and the will to overcome any obstacle in their path. Soak it up, MC fans. A sports year like this is the stuff of legend and the memories created will last a lifetime in the halls of this storied athletic powerhouse.
Folks, after an absolutely epic 2022-23 season, I think it’s safe to say Malden Catholic has cemented itself as a premier Division 1 sports powerhouse in Massachusetts. This historic year saw the Lancers capture state titles across multiple sports while competing for championships in just about everything. Let’s break it all down and see how MC has risen to elite status.
Unstoppable Football Sets Tone
The first hint that we were witnessing something special came on the gridiron this fall. MC football dusted off over a decade of heartbreak in championship games by finally bring home the D1 state title. Led by quarterback J.C. Petrongolo and linebacker Ryan Brooks, these guys were just on another level. After the only regular season loss came to a national juggernaut from California, the Lancers reeled off 12 straight W’s en route to the Catholic Conference crown.
In the playoffs, their defense was simply dominant, surrendering fewer than 10 points per game. Petrongolo engineered a quick-strike offense to perfection, spreading the ball around to playmakers like Preston Zinter. When the final whistle blew on their D1 state championship win, it was clear MC football had kicked off a special year.
Boys Soccer Back on Top
If football winning it all seemed improbable, I’m not even sure what to call the epic championship run by boys soccer. This was a team known for playoff heartbreak, yet they peaked at the perfect time in 2023. Brazilian striking phenom Lucas Almeida was unstoppable, tormenting defenses all season long.
Meanwhile, keeper Josh Smith showed nerves of steel, making huge saves when it mattered most. After finally topping archrival BC High in an overtime classic in the D1 state final, these Lancers etched their names into school lore. Suddenly, MC had multiple state champs already and it was still fall!
Boys Hoops Ends Drought
All the success just kept rolling along into the winter sports season. The boys basketball team entered 2023 with more pressure than ever to deliver that elusive state title. Led by senior guard Mikey Brooks, this group was up to the challenge. Witnessing their incredible run to that championship was something no MC fan will ever forget.
These guys turned the pressure up to 11 defensively every single night, wearing down opponents with waves of athleticism and length. Offensively, they never panicked, winning tight playoff games thanks to their depth and versatility. finally toppling BC High for the D1 crown unleashed decades of bottled up emotions. What a moment!
Girls Basketball On The Rise
With the boys team understandably getting tons of attention, it’s easy to overlook how fantastic the MC girls hoops squad was this winter too. Led by rising superstars Ava Moreau and Olivia Jones, this young team made it all the way to the D1 state championship game. Though they came up just short, the future is so bright.
Especially with incoming freshmen like Mia Greene bringing more talent to the fold, I’d be shocked if this program isn’t competing for multiple titles over the next few years. The girls made a huge statement that MC is now a true power in girls basketball as well.
Diamond Domination in the Spring
Just when you thought Malden Catholic sports might take a breather from the championship scene, the baseball team said “nope, we want in on the fun too!” And they did it in the most dramatic way possible, winning four straight playoff games in walk-off fashion.
Whether it was junior ace Nate Boyce stifling teams on the mound or third baseman Casey Jones delivering in the clutch at the plate, these guys showed the resiliency of champions. Shocking BC High in extras to capture that elusive title completed the most dominant sports year imaginable.
The Verdict on MC’s Epic 2022-23
When we look back years down the road, I have a feeling this school year will stand out as the moment Malden Catholic truly joined the upper-echelon of D1 sports powers. Four state championships, two more title game appearances, the Catholic Conference crown in every major sport.
Across the board, MC teams displayed the same traits that define champions – unwavering confidence, clutch performers, and the will to overcome any obstacle. Each title they captured, no matter how improbable, just added to their aura of dominance. Congrats to all the players, coaches and fans who will forever remember 2022-23!
