It all starts on the defensive end for UVA. The Cavaliers possess one of the stingiest backlines in all of college lacrosse, led by senior lockdown defender Cade Saustad. The unit allowed just 7.67 goals per game last season, ranking 5th nationally. After last season’s impressive campaign ended in heartbreak in the championship game, Piro’s crew is as motivated as ever to finish the job in 2023. With Piro at the helm, UVA is in good hands.

As a diehard Virginia Cavaliers fan, I’m buzzing with excitement for what could be a very special spring down in Charlottesville. With a loaded roster and a favorable schedule, the table appears set for UVA to make a serious run at the national championship in 2023.

Now I know – it’s easy to get caught up in the preseason hype. Heck, those early season polls are fun to celebrate but rarely predict accurately how things will shake out once the helmets start clacking together. But there are some legitimate reasons for unbridled optimism if you bleed orange and blue heading into this season.

The Boys Are Back in Town

It all starts with the stacked lineup Coach Piro has to work with this year. The bulk of last season’s star-studded squad returns, including beastly defenders like Cade Saustad and lockdown goalie Matt Moore. Having battle-tested veterans at key positions provides invaluable experience when the pressure ramps up down the stretch.

And let’s not forget UVA’s embarrassment of riches at attack. Connor Shellenberger will be a Tewaaraton Award frontrunner after racking up 90 points last year.
