Importance of having proper footwear for indoor lacrosse
As any lacrosse player knows, having the right shoes can make all the difference when it comes to your performance on the field. This is especially true when playing indoor lacrosse, where quick cuts, fast footwork, and grippy traction are essential. The type of shoe you choose for box lacrosse can affect your speed, agility, comfort and safety during gameplay. So what should you look for when selecting the best indoor lacrosse shoes?
Proper lacrosse shoes allow you to move fluidly around the court, pivot and change directions on a dime, all while maintaining stability and control. The indoor lacrosse court is much smaller than an outdoor field, so you need shoes that can keep up with the fast pace of play in tight spaces. You’ll also want shoes with enhanced grip and traction to prevent slipping on the hard indoor surface.
In addition to performance, having shoes tailored for indoor use provides vital protection. The constant stops, starts and collisions of box lacrosse can really do a number on your feet and ankles without the proper support. Lacrosse shoes offer cushioning and reinforced materials to shield your feet from impact. Ankle support is also key to prevent rolls or sprains during intense gameplay.
Comfort should not be overlooked either. You’ll be moving nonstop during a game or practice, so you want breathable, flexible shoes that move naturally with your feet. A poor fitting shoe can cause blisters and pain that affect your playing ability. Proper indoor lacrosse shoes allow you to focus on the game, not your equipment.
Lastly, most indoor lacrosse facilities don’t allow outdoor cleats as they can damage floors and turf. So specialized indoor shoes become mandatory. Bringing the right lacrosse shoes tailored for box playing surfaces will ensure you meet venue regulations.
Differences between outdoor and indoor lacrosse shoes
Outdoor and indoor lacrosse each require specialized footwear to match the playing conditions. What works great on a grass field won’t cut it on a hard indoor court.
Outdoor lacrosse cleats have longer, more aggressively-studded plastic or metal spikes built for digging into natural turf. While these help grip the grass outdoors, indoor court floors would be absolutely shredded by these cleats. So most indoor venues prohibit outdoor cleats.
Indoor lacrosse shoes have a smooth, flat rubber sole with shallower lugs or patterns for gripping the hard court surface. The outsole provides multi-directional traction tailored for fast lateral cuts and stops. The uppers also tend to provide more stability and ankle support than outdoor cleats.
Many brands now make lacrosse shoes specifically for indoor use, with brands like New Balance, Nike, Under Armour, and others offering indoor models. So be sure to look for indoor lacrosse shoes rather than versions designed for the outdoor field.
Key features to look for in indoor lacrosse shoes
When evaluating indoor lacrosse shoes, here are some of the top qualities and features to look for:
- Lightweight construction – Less weight makes it easier to move your feet quickly.
- Flexible sole – Allows natural foot motion and mobility.
- Grippy rubber outsole – Provides multi-directional traction on hard indoor floors.
- Ankle support – Stabilizes and protects ankles from rolls and collisions.
- Breathable mesh – Ventilation keeps feet cool and dry during intense play.
- Durable materials – Withstands the rigors of indoor lacrosse.
- Comfortable fit – Allows you to focus on your game, not your feet.
Prioritizing these performance, protection and comfort factors will ensure your indoor lacrosse shoes support your abilities on the box lacrosse court.
Lightweight construction for speed and agility
The fast pace of indoor lacrosse demands shoes that are lightweight and won’t weigh down your feet. Look for shoes made of breathable mesh material in the uppers rather than heavy leather. Many also utilize synthetic overlays or fabrics to shed weight.
In the midsole, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam is a popular choice for its ability to be lightweight but still cushioned. Some brands also use proprietary midsole foams with weight-savings in mind. The more lightweight the shoe, the quicker you’ll be able to react and execute cuts or directional changes on the court.
Flexible sole for quick cuts and changes in direction
Indoor lacrosse requires the ability to pivot, cut, start and stop on a dime. You need shoes that can flex and move naturally with your feet for this kind of multi-directional movement. Shoes with a flexible sole allow your feet to move freely and push off in any direction without restriction.
Many indoor lacrosse shoes use minimal rubber on the outsole focused just along the edges or high-wear areas. This provides traction where needed but still allows good flexibility. A pliable midsole material like EVA foam also enhances overall flexibility.
Traction pattern for grip on indoor surfaces
Indoor lacrosse courts can be slick, so your shoes need top-notch traction to prevent slips. Look for indoor lacrosse shoes with grippy rubber outsoles designed specifically for indoor surfaces. While they won’t have long studs or cleats, the outsole will feature patterns like waved lines, dots, circles or diamonds that grip the floor.
The best shoes offer multi-directional traction patterns that allow quick lateral motion and pivoting without losing your footing. Test the shoes by making hard cuts and stops to ensure the outsole sticks to the floor.
Ankle support and protection
The indoor lacrosse court sees its fair share of collisions, so ankle support is crucial. Shoes with high tops or mid tops help stabilize your ankles and prevent injury from rolls or sprains. Many indoor models also incorporate reinforced materials like TPU shanks for added structure and support.
Cushioned collars and memory foam inserts also enhance the lockdown fit around your ankles. Don’t sacrifice the ankle support you’ll need for quick changes in momentum during indoor play.
Durability for longevity
The constant motion of indoor lacrosse can really wear down your shoes over time. Look for shoes with quality construction and durable materials that can handle the rigors of indoor play. Brands like New Balance use premium leathers that withstand abrasion while Under Armour utilizes reinforced threads for extended structural integrity.
Abrasion-resistant fabrics in high wear zones also help shoes endure. Prioritizing durability ensures your shoes last season after season and provide the same level of performance.
Breathable mesh for ventilation
Breathability is key for any athletic shoe, especially in the intense, fast-paced environment of indoor lacrosse. Your feet need ventilation to stay cool and comfortable even during the hottest competition. Mesh material along the uppers allows air flow to your feet and wicks away sweat.
Many indoor lacrosse shoes incorporate lightweight synthetics for support while mesh comprises the majority of the upper for maximum breathability. The cooler your feet stay, the longer you can perform at your best before fatigue sets in.
Style and color options to suit personal preference
While performance and fit should be the top priorities, style and colors allow you to showcase your personality. Most indoor lacrosse shoe brands offer at least a few colorways to choose from. Popular options include team colors, flashy designs, metallics and basic black or white.
Some even allow for custom designs that you can personalize. While secondary to function, choosing a style you love gives that extra boost of motivation every time you lace up. Just be sure to check that any wild colors or patterns are approved by your league or indoor facility.
Popular shoe brands designed for indoor lacrosse
Many top athletic brands now design indoor lacrosse shoes catered for the box game’s specific demands. Some popular choices include:
- New Balance – The Burn X2 and FreezeX2 are built for indoor surfaces with grip, flexibility and lightweight feel.
- Nike – The Alpha Huarache and Alpha Menace lacrosse shoes provide durable traction and support.
- Under Armour – Options like the Highlight RM and Highlight MC offer breathability, ankle lockdown and indoor traction.
- Warrior – The Wrap and Project 9 shoes offer aggressive traction and a “broken-in” feel right out of the box.
These big brands devote extensive R&D into designing high-performing indoor lacrosse shoes you can trust.
Trying on different shoe models for best fit
Don’t settle on a pair until you’ve tested different indoor lacrosse shoes. Comfort and fit should be your top concern. Bring any orthotics you use into the store when trying on shoes.
Do some lateral shuffles, cuts and stops to feel how your feet move. There should be no pinching, heel slip or pressure points. Typically, mid to high tops provide the most support and stability for indoor play.
Proper sizing for room to move toes
Make sure to choose the right size, even if it means going up half a size from your street shoes. Your feet swell during exercise, so you need enough room to splay and move your toes.
There should be about a half thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Too small and your feet can’t move naturally, leading to discomfort and loss of performance.
Caring for your lacrosse shoes to extend usable life
Investing in quality indoor lacrosse shoes means you want them to last. Take care of your shoes and they’ll take care of your feet for seasons to come.
Always air dry shoes completely after games or practices. Stick shoetrees inside to maintain the shape and absorb moisture. Use a shoe cleaner to remove dirt and debris that can wear down materials.
Check regularly for signs of excess wear and replace shoes once traction or stability starts to go. Properly caring for your indoor lacrosse shoes ensures season after season of peak performance.
Finding the best lacrosse shoes engineered for the indoor game takes some research. But the investment is well worth the agility, speed, and protection your feet will enjoy. With proper indoor lacrosse shoes, your feet will feel as fast as your stick.
Differences between outdoor and indoor lacrosse shoes
When suiting up for a game, lacrosse players know their choice of footwear is crucial. But the needs for outdoor and indoor lacrosse shoes can vary greatly. From cleats and traction to support and stability, understanding the differences is key to choosing the right shoe for your style of play.
Outdoor lacrosse played on grass fields allows for larger, more aggressive cleats to dig into the turf. Indoor lacrosse sees much faster starts, stops and direction changes on hard court floors. This contrast in playing surfaces and pace of play means specialized footwear is needed for each version of the game.
Here’s an in-depth look at how outdoor and indoor lacrosse shoes differ and why having the proper pair matters.
Cleat design and traction
One of the biggest differences comes down to the cleat design and traction pattern on the outsole. Outdoor shoes feature longer and more prominent cleat studs built to penetrate natural grass fields and ensure stability. Typical studs are made from firm plastic or metal for durability.
Indoor lacrosse shoes have a smooth rubber sole with shallow lugs or patterns that grip the hard court surface. No long spikes are allowed since they would shred up an indoor playing floor. Traction must come from the sole design alone.
Weight and breathability
Outdoor cleats are built sturdier to handle grass and dirt, while indoor shoes prioritize lightweight mobility. Indoor lacrosse demands quick acceleration and cuts, so shoes are designed with breathable mesh for ventilation at the expense of durability.
Outdoor shoes may incorporate leather or synthetic leather for toughness to withstand the outdoor elements. Indoor shoes won’t need that ruggedness for indoor play but sacrifice it for air flow and keeping feet dry during intense games.
Ankle support
The “box” style indoor lacrosse court increases physicality between players and opportunities for collisions and ankle tweaks or rolls. So indoor shoes focus more on stability with higher collar or ankle support.
Outdoor cleats allow for more open, lower collar designs since play is more spread out on a larger grass field. But the concentrated indoor court demands shoes brace ankles through quick cuts and position changes.
Cushioning needs
Hard indoor courts are less forgiving on feet than grass, so proper cushioning becomes more important. Indoor shoes focus on shock absorption and energy return with padded foam midsoles.
Outdoor cleats don’t need as much cushioning for natural grass fields. They aim for support and stability over plush comfort for the uneven outdoor terrain.
Style and color
Indoor lacrosse shoes cater more to modern athletic footwear styling with bright colors, graphic prints and design. Durability takes a backseat to style.
Outdoor cleats go for a more classic, old school lacrosse look in basic colors like black, white or team colors. Durability and performance rule over flair.
So when choosing between outdoor and indoor lacrosse footwear, consider the different demands of each version of the game. The right shoe makes all the difference in boosting–not hindering–your level of play.
For outdoor fields, prioritize stability, durability and traction. For indoor courts, choose lightweight mobility, breathability and cushioning tailored for your style of play.
Key features to look for in indoor lacrosse shoes
When it comes to indoor lacrosse, your shoes are one of the most important pieces of equipment. The right pair provides the traction, support and quickness to elevate your game on the box lacrosse court. So what should you look for when choosing indoor lacrosse shoes?
There are several key features that combine to make an exceptional indoor lacrosse shoe. Prioritizing these characteristics will help you find the top pair to boost your performance and prevent injury during intense indoor play.
Lightweight Feel
Indoor lacrosse demands constant motion—cutting, dodging, accelerating from a standstill. You need shoes light enough that they don’t weigh down your feet. Look for shoes incorporating breathable mesh and thin synthetic overlays in the upper rather than bulky leather.
EVA foam or other lightweight midsole materials also help reduce overall shoe mass. The lighter the shoe, the quicker you’ll be able to move your feet and leave defenders in the dust.
Flexibility
Sharp cuts and pivots require shoes that flex with the natural motions of your feet. The best indoor lacrosse shoes incorporate minimal rubber coverage on the outsole so your feet can bend and push off freely.
Flex grooves in the sole boost overall pliability too. And uppers made of woven synthetics move easily with the shift and flexion of your feet for agile mobility.
Grippy Traction
Indoor court surfaces can get slick, so solid traction helps you stay on your feet. Indoor lacrosse shoes have rubber outsoles with multi-directional tread patterns to grip the floor. Look for wavy lines, circles, diamonds or other shapes that provide all-direction stickiness.
The best shoes let you stop, start, cut and pivot without slipping. Testing different models to feel that grippy traction yourself is recommended.
Ankle Support
The confined indoor court sees its share of collisions and rolls. Shoes with mid or high ankle collars provide crucial support to keep your ankles stable through cuts and physical play.
Reinforcements like TPU shanks also boost structure. Cushioned foam around the ankles enhances fit, while some shoes incorporate laces up to the collar for enhanced lockdown.
Cushioning
Hard indoor floors can be punishing on your joints over time. Proper cushioning absorbs impact to protect your feet and ankles. Shoes with EVA or compressed foam midsoles ease the blow while providing energy return.
Cushioning under the balls of feet and heels helps too. Just be sure cushioning doesn’t compromise stability during those hard cuts.
Breathability
Keep your feet cool and sweat-free during intense indoor games with proper ventilation. Shoes utilizing breathable mesh along with synthetic leather or overlays provide air flow where you need it most.
Mesh lining around the collar also stops moisture buildup. Ventilation helps avoid blisters and keeps your feet feeling fresh even in hot gyms or arenas.
Durability
Indoor lacrosse can wear down shoes quicker than the outdoor game. Prioritize footwear with premium leather, double stitching and abrasion-resistant materials in high wear areas. This ensures they withstand season after season.
Rubber outsoles with solid traction patterns won’t smooth out over time. While lightweight, indoor shoes should maintain integrity for the game’s physical demands.
Finding shoes to check all these indoor lacrosse boxes takes some trial and error. But once you discover that ideal pair, you’ll notice the positive difference during every game and practice.
Your shoes allow you to perform at your peak. With the right indoor lacrosse footwear, your feet keep up with your stick handle as you dance past defenders and dominate the competition.
Lightweight construction for speed and agility
When playing the fast-paced game of indoor lacrosse, lightweight shoes can make all the difference in your quickness and agility. Reducing shoe weight allows you to move your feet rapidly to cut, accelerate and change direction against defenders.
But how do you trim weight from lacrosse shoes without losing performance? What key elements of shoe construction contribute to a lightweight feel?
There are a few vital techniques and components to creating a shoe engineered for indoor speed and mobility while still providing stability and traction.
Minimal, strategic rubber use
The outsole rubber adds essential traction but also bulk. Many indoor lacrosse shoes strategically minimize the rubber coverage to just high abrasion areas like the heel, toe and sides.
This positions grip where it’s needed most for aggressive cuts, while removing rubber from other zones to shed weight. Traction doesn’t have to cover the entire outsole to be effective.
Breathable mesh uppers
Leather and synthetic leather offer durability but add considerable mass. Indoor shoes instead opt for lightweight, woven mesh fabric in the uppers for ventilation and freedom of movement.
Mesh breathes to keep feet cool and dry. And its woven construction means it weighs a fraction of leather overlays. Strategically placed synthetics offer support only where crucial.
Foam midsole materials
EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) foam midsoles give cushioning for hard indoor floors while remaining incredibly light. EVA compresses easily underfoot then springs back into shape.
Some brands use proprietary midsole foams with a similar lightweight, responsive feel. Foam offers softness without the bulk of dense rubber midsoles.
Low profile design
The closer the foot sits to the ground, the easier it is to rapidly move your feet. A lower midsole height and slimmer overall profile positions feet nearer the court for nimble mobility.
Thinner midsoles around 18-22mm suit indoor needs better than the 30mm+ outdoor versions. Less lift makes shoes feel almost an extension of your own feet.
Seamless overlays
Rather than stitched or layered overlays, seamless overlays molded right into the uppers maintain structure while minimizing mass. The one-piece construction avoids bulky seams or layers for a featherweight feel.
Thin, printed or heat-fused overlays also fuse support without adding excess material to the shoes’ build.
Moisture-wicking linings
Mesh linings not only breathe but also actively draw sweat away from your feet. This prevents water weight buildup inside shoes during intense indoor games.
Lightweight moisture-wicking laminates on lining materials keep your socks and feet dry as you move for less damp weight.
Every component matters when constructing lightweight indoor lacrosse shoes. Brands analyze each piece of materials, overlays, foam and rubber to trim excess bulk. The result is shoes sculpted for speed and quick cuts to run circles around defenders.
Flexible sole for quick cuts and changes in direction
The ability to pivot, cut and accelerate in an instant is critical in indoor lacrosse. A flexible shoe sole enables your feet to move naturally for precise multi-directional traction on the court. What exactly makes a sole flexible and how does that translate into quicker cuts?
Certain key characteristics allow a shoe to bend and respond rapidly alongside the fast footwork of indoor lacrosse. From the materials to tread design, flexibility matters.
Minimal rubber coverage
Less rubber on the outsole means less restriction of natural foot motions. Many indoor lacrosse shoes concentrate rubber to just the high abrasion zones like toe, heel and perimeter.
This positions grip where needed most but removes excessive rubber from the forefoot and midfoot areas that need flex for cuts and pivots.
Flex grooves
Strategically placed flex grooves or indentations in the sole allow it to bend more easily. Flex grooves often run from the forefoot back towards the arch area for a smooth heel-to-toe transition.
Deep Across the shoe flex grooves encourage side-to-side flexibility critical for lateral cuts and crossovers as well.
Articulated traction patterns
Rather than long, continuous traction bars, articulated patterns with segmentation promote natural foot movement. Patterns made up of individual circles, hexagons or other shapes maintain grip while allowing sole flexion.
Gaps between the articulated pattern sections enable easier bend and push off compared to stiff, unbroken traction coverage.
Curved shape
Many indoor lacrosse shoes incorporate a curved or a rolled shape from heel to toe rather than a flat profile. This mirrors the natural contours of the foot for a smooth heel to toe flex.
The curvature allows the shoe to rock seamlessly with the progression of your stride and through cuts in any direction.
Low-profile construction
A lower ride height brings your feet closer to the court for greater freedom of motion. Look for indoor shoes with a midsole height around 18-22mm rather than 30mm+ for a more foot-hugging feel.
Thinner profiled help you feel the floor underfoot for responding rapidly to cuts and changes in pace or direction.
Woven upper materials
Tightly woven mesh and synthetic uppers flex easily with the bending motions of your feet. The supple materials won’t fight against your foot’s need to move and flex freely.
Mesh also conforms more naturally to the shape of your foot compared to stiffer overlays for unrestricted mobility.
When you need to leave defenders in the dust, a flexible sole tuned to the movements of indoor lacrosse gives you the quick cuts to do it. Your shoes become a seamless extension of your feet for the ultimate agility on the court.
Traction pattern for grip on indoor surfaces
Indoor lacrosse courts can get extremely slick from player traffic and dust. Solid traction from your shoes is crucial to quick cuts and acceleration without slipping. But what tread features allow indoor shoes to grip the hard floor?
It’s more than just the rubber compound. Specific traction patterns, flex points and multi-directional grip work together to plant your feet and propel out ofposition changes.
Lateral traction elements
Indoor lacrosse requires as much side-to-side traction for crossing over and lateral cuts as forward grip. Look for tread patterns incorporating lateral traction nodes, diamonds or lines to grip on sharp angle changes.
Outside edges with extra grip also provide added traction when planting your foot to pivot or change direction against a defender.
Low-profile lugs
While outdoor cleats have long studs, indoor shoes have shallow, tightly spaced lugs. The lower profile still grips floors without getting caught up court surfaces and turf.
Small, responsive lugs allow quick release from the floor so you’re not “stuck” during cuts and stops.
Waffle or hexagonal pattern
Waffle-like grids with squares or hexagonsChannel water away while providing multi-directional grip for indoor use. The shapes allow flex while their edges dig in on all angles.
Breaking up solid rubber coverage into such articulated, flexible patterns maintains traction through rapid footwork.
Decoupled heel and forefoot
Separating the heel and forefoot traction zones allows each to operate independently through foot strikes and toe-offs. Your heel can grip during landings as your forefoot rolls off naturally.
The decoupled set up enhances cuts, crossovers and end-to-end traction flow during sprints.
Targeted toe traction
Extra grip under the toe joint provides immediate traction to dig in for crossovers, cuts and jab steps to elude defenders. Sticky rubber under the big toe joint gives an edge on powering out of stops.
Toe traction combines with the forefoot tread pattern for optimal grip out of cuts and acceleration.
Flex grooves
Strategic flex grooves allow the sole to bend while maintaining ground contact for fluid traction. Grooves through the middle of the shoe ensure grip even when rolling from heel to toe through strides.
Deep flex grooves under the metatarsals promote flexibility for smoother push offs while retaining traction through the motion.
Whether accelerating, cutting or pivoting, the right tread compounds and patterns keep your feet planted and your game elevated on indoor surfaces.
Ankle support and protection
The confined indoor lacrosse court sees its fair share of collisions and rolls. Solid ankle support keeps you on your feet through the physical play. The right shoes stabilize ankles and protect against injury.
But what constitutes good ankle support? And how can lacrosse shoes provide it along with freedom of movement?
Certain structural design elements lend themselves to enhanced ankle lockdown and stability during intense indoor games.
High-top or mid-top collar
A higher cut collar around the ankles naturally provides more coverage and brace against rolls. High-top shoes in particular envelop the ankle for stability during cuts and physical contact.
Mid-tops also supply ample collar padding above the ankles to prevent inversion or eversion while allowing a bit more mobility.
Internal ankle padding
Strategically placed padding lining the inside collar and tongue cushions the ankle bones and Achilles tendon from impact forces. Targeted foam or air pockets prevent painful pressure points.
The added padding also helps lock the heel in place to avoid slippage inside the shoe during play.
Heel counter
An integrated heel counter forms a supportive “cup” to stabilize the rear of the foot. This hard counter piece prevents the heel from sliding laterally during cuts.
It provides structure around the ankles and keeps them tracking properly through multi-directional movements.
Lace loops or straps
Extending laces up to the top collar allows you to cinch the shoes securely around your ankles for a snug fit. This enhanced lockdown bolsters lateral stability and support.
Some shoes incorporate a midfoot strap for added lock-in of the foot to prevent slippage inside the shoe during play.
Reinforcements
TPU shanks integrated along the midsole provide torsional rigidity and support against rolls or ankle tweaks. Such reinforcements add structure and stability through the shoe’s chassis.
Fusion foam collars also maintain shape and support. The more reinforced the shoe’s construction, the more brace it provides for ankles.
Low profile
A closer-to-the-ground midsole height enhances proprioception or court feel so ankles reflexively adjust to surface changes. A lower profile places ankles in a more stable position.
Moderately thick midsoles still absorb shock while allowing ankles to respond nimbly near the playing surface.
Joint-friendly indoor shoes allow you to play all out without sacrificing the ankle support and safety needed for the heat of competition.
Durability for longevity
The constant motion and physical play of indoor lacrosse can really wear down shoes over time. Choosing durable shoes extends their lifespan so you get more than just a season or two out of them.
But what makes indoor lacrosse shoes truly durable? Certain materials, design elements and construction methods lend themselves to withstanding the demands of indoor play.
Abrasion-resistant materials
Premium full-grain leathers withstand scuffs and floor abrasion far better than synthetic blends. Under Armour utilizes high-grade Anafoam leather in wear zones, while New Balance uses premium suede that resists floor friction.
Tough synthetics like polyurethane also hold up well to abuse. Seek out the most abrasion-resistant uppers for extended durability.
Reinforced stitching
Higher stitch counts using stronger strand materials keeps seams and overlays locked into uppers over the long haul. Many brands opt for double stitching in high-stress areas.
Under Armour highlights the charged cotton thread it uses to reinforce stitching and increase overall structural strength of its shoes.
Toe bumpers
The toe box takes a beating during indoor play, so protective bumpers defend against drag. Thermoplastic TPU bumpers shield the toes against abrasion while maintaining flexibility.
New Balance fuses the bumpers onto the toe box for seamless durability without bulky overlays.
Solid traction rubber
Rubber outsole compounds engineered for resilience maintain grip over time rather than quickly smoothing out. New Balance uses NDurance rubber known for its long-wearing traction properties.
The more durable the rubber and tread pattern, the better shoes maintain a sticky grip season after season.
Removable insoles
Insoles cushion your feet, but can compact over time. Having removable insoles allows you to replace them once they flatten and lose responsiveness.
Fresh insoles revive bounce back and energy return as the shoes age through seasons of play.
Proper storage
Keep shoes in breathable mesh bags or use shoe trees when not in play. This allows moisture to escape rather than be trapped inside to degrade materials quicker.
Also, limit wearing indoor shoes outside on concrete or asphalt, which can grind down traction rubber quicker than indoor floors.
Taking steps to choose durable design combined with smart storage gives indoor lacrosse shoes the longevity to perform season after season.
Breathable mesh for ventilation
Proper ventilation keeps feet cool and dry during intense indoor lacrosse games. Breathable mesh construction provides airflow where athletes need it most. But what makes mesh truly breathable?
The moisture-wicking properties, strategic placement and sheer mesh structure allow air to pass through, preventing a hot, sweaty environment inside the shoes.
Moisture-wicking properties
Mesh material actively pulls perspiration away from the skin rather than absorbing it. This prevents moisture build-up inside the shoe that causes hot spots and blisters.
Synthetic overlays or laminates applied to the mesh enhance its moisture management abilities to keep feet dry.
Airflow zones
Mesh comprises the majority of the upper, especially in zones that need maximum airflow. The toe box, forefoot and collar lining are popular mesh coverage areas.
Perforations or ventilation holes punched into leather or synthetic overlays also channel air through for breathability.
Minimal seams
Mesh construction utilizes minimal layering to eliminate bulky seams that could obstruct airflow. New Balance uses HypoSkin stitchless overlays to augment ventilation.
Fused or printed synthetic layers avoid seams as well. This keeps the interior smooth for unimpeded airflow to feet.
Thin mesh structure
Tightly woven synthetic mesh features micro-sized perforations that allow air passage while still providing structure. The thinner and lighter the mesh, the more breathable.
Laser-cut holes with smooth edges also prevent skin irritation from mesh friction while enhancing ventilation.
Venting zones
Zones free of overlays promote ventilation across the top of the foot. Mesh collar lining and gills at the arch or side profile channel fresh air into the foot chamber.
Mesh tongues with minimal padding avoid trapping heat inside the shoe.
Removable footbeds
Orthotics and contoured footbeds provide cushioning, but limit airflow. Having removable footbeds allows taking them out to maximize ventilation on hot days.
It gives you the option to better regulate temperature and moisture inside the shoe.
With innovative materials and strategic design, modern indoor lacrosse shoes keep your feet feeling fresh during intense competition.
Style and color options to suit personal preference

Primary athletic colors
Classic athletic footwear shades continue to thrive, with black, white and gray colorways that pair with any uniform. Red and blue are other go-to primary tones found across brands.
Sticking with basic colors ensures shoes comply with team and league uniform regulations.
Bold brights
Electric color palettes energize modern indoor lacrosse shoes. Vibrant blues, neon greens, hyper pinks and other loud colors make a bold statement.
Warrior incorporates wild brights in its Project 9 line. And Nike has its Volt colorway with neon green accents.
Metallic accents
Today’s indoor lacrosse shoes shine with metallic overlays, Swooshes and logos. Shadows of gold, silver and rose gold add flair without overdoing it.
New Balance utilizes reflective or holographic accents on models like the FreezeX v2 for flashy style.
Retro style
Some indoor shoes take inspiration from old school tennis and basketball shoes. The adidas Marquee Mid MD pays homage to the brand’s Forum model.
Warrior’s Franchise model has a clean retro look. Vintage appeal never goes out of style.
Customization
Many top brands offer custom shoe design studios to personalize your lacrosse kicks. Custom colors, logos and graphic prints help you stand out.
Nike By You lets you customize elements on shoes like the Alpha Huarache 2 lacrosse edition.

Trying on different shoe models for best fit
Finding the perfect pair of indoor lacrosse shoes can make all the difference when it comes to your performance on the field. With so many options available, from lacrosse sneakers to box lacrosse cleats, it can be tricky knowing where to start. The key is taking the time to try on different shoe models and focuses on fit and feel rather than getting caught up in branding or trends.
When trying on lacrosse shoes, the first thing to look out for is overall comfort. The shoes should fit snugly without any pinching or pressure points. Since you’ll be constantly moving and changing directions, you want shoes that feel like a natural extension of your feet. Pay attention to the width and try sizing up or down if needed to get the ideal fit.
You’ll also want to focus on support and stability. The best indoor lacrosse shoes will have sufficient cushioning and arch support while still being responsive underfoot. Test the flexibility by bending the shoes – they shouldn’t be too stiff or overly flexible as both can lead to fatigue over the course of a game. Additionally, check for adequate heel support to prevent rolling or twisting of the ankle during sharp cuts or dodges.
Don’t forget about weight and breathability either. The lighter the shoe, the less drag on your feet as you run up and down the field. Meanwhile, breathable mesh material prevents overheating and blisters. Try on shoes with and without socks to gauge the overall ventilation and cooling.
When you find a shoe that checks all the boxes for comfort, support, and weight, do some dynamic testing. Jog, jump, and move laterally to mimic game-like conditions. How is the grip and traction on the court surface? Do your feet still feel secure and energized? Listen to your body’s feedback here.
Consider playing surface and position needs
The type of playing surface can impact your lacrosse shoe needs as well. Indoor lacrosse is usually played on turf fields or basketball courts rather than grass. Make sure to get shoes with enough grip and traction to prevent slips, especially if you rely on quick cuts or change of direction in your position.
Strikers may opt for lighter shoes to maximize their speed in transition while defenders need shoes with stronger ankles and lateral support for shadowing opponents. Take into account your main position and movements when zeroing in on the right shoe design and features.
Don’t forget about style
While performance and fit should be the top priorities, you can still get lacrosse shoes that reflect your personal style. Most brands now offer color customization and limited edition designs alongside their classic shoe models. Whether you like wild neon patterns or a clean minimalist look, you can sport shoes that give you confidence and have you looking good on the field.
Just be wary of choosing style over substance. Make sure any aesthetic features don’t interfere with weight, ventilation, traction, or support. The flashy colorway won’t matter much if your feet are aching halfway through the first quarter!
Shop smart by knowing your budget
Indoor lacrosse shoes can range dramatically in price from around $50 up to $200+ for high-end cleats. Set a budget that works for you and look for sales or team discounts to maximize value. Avoid going all out for your first pair – once you get more playing experience, you’ll have a better sense of your must-have features for your next purchase.
While it’s not necessary to buy the most expensive shoe right away, also be wary of bargain bins or second-hand pairs. The materials and construction may be subpar, putting you at risk of injury. Invest in a quality beginner or intermediate pair that will hold up through practices and games.
Break in your shoes properly
Once you’ve purchased your new indoor lacrosse shoes, take the time to break them in gradually. Wear them around the house and on short jogs before using them for full practices and games. Properly broken in shoes will mold to your feet, preventing hot spots and blisters.
You can also try inserts, heel locks, or tongue pads to optimize the fit during the break-in period. As the shoes contour to your feet, remove any extras that are no longer needed. With the right lacrosse shoe, you’ll feel like you’re not wearing shoes at all once they are broken in!
Replace shoes regularly
With all the lateral motion, quick cuts, and stops and starts, indoor lacrosse can really wear down your shoes. Make sure to closely inspect the soles and mesh for signs of excessive wear. As the traction deteriorates, your risk of slipping or injury rises. Runners generally replace shoes every 300-500 miles – a good rule of thumb for lacrosse shoes is every season or two.
Rotating between two pairs of shoes can help extend their lifespan. But don’t wait until they are falling apart to swap them out – protection and performance will already be compromised before that point. Being proactive about replacements ensures you get the most out of each pair while staying safe on the field.
Finding your perfect pair of indoor lacrosse shoes involves trying on different styles, keeping your playing position and surface in mind, breaking them in properly, and replacing them routinely. But taking the time to go through this process helps set you up for optimal comfort, support, grip, and confidence during gameplay. Don’t settle for average shoes – with so many options out there, you can get lacrosse shoes that are a perfect fit for your unique needs and take your game to the next level.
Proper sizing for room to move toes
When looking for the perfect indoor lacrosse shoes, one of the most important factors is getting the sizing right. You want your feet to have plenty of room to move naturally in the toe box area without jamming up against the front. Proper sizing gives your toes space to spread out during pivots and cuts, reducing blister risk and improving control.
Many players make the mistake of going too small in pursuit of a snug fit. But with all the starting, stopping, and changes in momentum in lacrosse, you need adequate wiggle room for toes. Otherwise, you may lose power from restricted toe-off or experience pain from repeated slamming into the front of shoes.
When trying on shoes, focus on overall fit rather than just the length. Stand with your heel pushed all the way back and make sure you can freely wiggle toes. There should be about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
Consider sizing up
Don’t be afraid to experiment with going up a half or full size, especially if you are between standard widths. The extra volume can allow feet to relax and spread out without cramming in. You can lock down the midfoot and heel area with lacing and get inserts if needed for a snugger fit.
Going up a size also accommodates for natural foot swelling during gameplay. Even shoes that feel perfect in the store may quickly start biting into feet once you get moving on the field. The looser fit accounts for your feet expanding while active.
Test sizing at peak activity times
Try to shop for shoes later in the day when your feet are already slightly swollen rather than first thing in the morning. This will give you a better sense of how sizing will hold up for practices and games when feet expand the most.
Also, bring athletic socks to try on with shoes if that is what you will wear during play. The extra sock thickness eats into space, so you want to test with gear you’ll use to get an accurate idea of fit.
Consider foot shape and lacing
Those with narrow feet may need to size up to get the right amount of toe room in shoes that taper significantly. Check where shoes are most snug on your feet and size up accordingly. For example, go up a half size if tightness is in the forefoot rather than heel.
You can also leverage lacing techniques to customize fit. For narrow feet, skip eyelets near the toes for a roomier box area. Wider feet can get a secure midfoot wrap with crisscross lacing. This dials in fit without compromising toe space.
Don’t rely on break-in period
Some players expect shoes to naturally widen as they break them in and buy small expecting feet to conform. But the materials in modern athletic shoes do not stretch much. By the time shoes widen even a little, feet are already battered and bruised from tight confinement.
Get as close as possible to that ideal spacious fit right from first try-on. Any small loosening from breaking in will only add bonus wiggle room, rather than stretch painfully snug shoes into suddenly being comfortable.
Remember position demands
For positions like attack that require a lot of quick cuts, extra toe room is crucial for fast direction changes. Defenders also need space to react smoothly while mirroring opponents.
Midfielders logging heavy mileage may opt for a more precise fit to enhance control for sprints up and down the field. But even slight tightness can become aggravated over a full game’s distance.
No matter your position, don’t underestimate the pounding your feet take on hard indoor surfaces. That cushion of space protects from trauma that can quickly sideline you.
Finding lacrosse shoes with ample toe room allows your feet to perform at their best. Focus on overall fit, don’t be afraid to size up, and test with athletic socks during peak swell times. With wiggle room to spare, your feet and game will both be primed for excellence.
Caring for your lacrosse shoes to extend usable life
Indoor lacrosse puts serious wear and tear on shoes with all the abrupt stops, lateral cuts, and pivots during gameplay. Taking proactive steps to care for your shoes off the field can help extend their usable lifespan so you get the most out of your investment.
From cleaning to storage methods, developing consistent shoe care habits keeps lacrosse shoes in top performing condition for as long as possible before needing a replacement pair.
Regularly remove dirt and debris
Whether playing on a glossy lacrosse court or turf field, debris will inevitably accumulate in shoe treads and crevices. Take a few minutes after each use to rinse shoes with clean water or wipe out the outsoles with a damp cloth. This prevents buildup of dirt that can impede traction over time.
For a deeper clean, use mild dish soap and an old toothbrush to periodically scrub out the soles. Avoid harsh detergents that could break down adhesives or damage mesh. When debris is cleared after each wear, deep cleanings are only needed every few weeks.
Sanitize and deodorize inside shoes
Sweat, moisture, and bacteria accumulate inside shoes during play, creating odor issues and shortening the lifespan of shoes. Use antimicrobial shoe sprays designed to kill germs and reduce smells after each use. Remove insoles and allow them to fully air dry before reinserting.
Or spray a light mist of rubbing alcohol inside shoes after play and allow to fully dry overnight. The alcohol sanitizes and reduces lingering odors. Just avoid over-saturating mesh material that could take longer to dry and breed more bacteria.
Stuff shoes to maintain shape
When not being worn, fill shoes with crumpled newspaper or towel sheets to absorb moisture and maintain the toe box shape. Avoid letting shoes sit empty as this can cause the synthetic materials to slowly warp and deform over time.
If shoes get heavily soaked during play, remove lace inserts and insoles and allow the shoes to fully air dry with newspaper inside before storing. Never put wet shoes into a dark, enclosed space.
Protect shoes during storage
Keep lacrosse shoes in a cool, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight when not in use. High heat and UV light can accelerate breakdown of adhesives and synthetic leather. Storing shoes in breathable mesh bags also allows airflow to prevent odor buildup.
When traveling for away games, pack shoes inside a protective case rather than cramming them into a crowded bag. This avoids crushing or warping the toe box shape during transit.
Inspect shoes before each use
Before lacing up for the next game or practice, do a quick inspection of each shoe. Look for any new rips in the mesh, excessive sole tread wear, or cracks/peeling around the sole. Catching problems early allows more time to try repair methods before needing full replacement.
Also check that laces aren’t frayed, eyelets are intact, and inserts aren’t wearing thin or compressed. Replace specific parts as needed to extend overall shoe lifespan.
With consistent, thoughtful care, high-quality lacrosse shoes can last through multiple seasons of indoor play. Taking just a few extra minutes to clean, deodorize, store, and inspect shoes helps you maximize value without sacrificing traction and comfort during gameplay when it matters most.
