Ping command | REG.RU
In this article we will tell you what the Ping command does and see where the Ping command may be needed.
Ping command description
Servers require constant diagnostics of their systems. One of the basic tools that helps in server administration is the Ping utility. Its main task is to determine the health of a node, site or server on the Internet.
How does it work? The Ping command in cmd sends small packets to the server to be tested. After some time, a response comes from the server – the same packets that were sent. Based on this response, the health of the server is evaluated. The device works normally if the sent packets are returned completely and quickly.
In addition to checking the availability of a remote host, using this command you can:
- measure the time it takes for the server to respond to a command,
- Reveal host IP addresses in LAN and WAN,
- determine the quality of the connection (whether packets were lost en route),
- Inject a command into a bash script to automatically check a network device.
Please note! If you are using a proxy server, the ping command will not work because it requires a direct connection to the device.
The command has several parameters that are designed for different tasks. To see all possible options, enter at the command line:
On Windows:
ping /?
How to enter the Windows command prompt
- org/HowToStep”>
- 2.
Type cmd in the search bar.
- 3.
Search results for Command line .
- 4.
In the menu that opens, select Run as administrator :
1.
Click search icon on the taskbar.
Linux:
ping -help
You will see the entire list of available options:
How to check the availability and health of the server
This is the simplest request. The device should send a number of packets to the desired server and check the response time and the number of parameters returned. Users also use this method to ping popular sites to find out if there are problems with the Internet connection on their device.
To check server availability, enter:
ping domain.name
Instead of domain.name , you can use:
- any domain, such as the domain name of your site that is experiencing problems,
- IP address.
This command works differently on Windows and Linux. The Ping command in Linux sends packets until you abort them manually with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C .
You will receive an answer:
Ubuntu ping
The given statistics will contain information about the number of sent, received and lost packets, as well as the minimum, maximum and average transmission time.
On Windows, the default command sends only 4 packets. If on Windows you need to send more packets, you can enter the command with the -t option. It will look like this:
ping -t domain.name
The command will ping the remote server endlessly until you press Ctrl+C . After the stop, statistics will appear in front of you again, but there will be more packets sent.
10 ms is considered a good response time, up to 20 ms is considered satisfactory. Values higher than these may indicate a problem when working with a remote server.
Instead of numbers, the phrase “Timeout exceeded” may appear. This happens when the server did not have time to respond in 4 seconds. This is the default timeout for the utility. Such an answer does not always indicate problems on the server. Ping requests are not prioritized. If the server is overloaded, it can execute them later. You can increase the server timeout following the instructions below and try again.
How to increase the response timeout from the server
The response timeout can be changed using parameter -w .
Type:
ping -w 5000
Where 5000 is the timeout in milliseconds (1s = 1000ms).
How to send a certain number of packets
It is not necessary to manually stop sending packets. You can immediately limit their number with the parameter -c . To do this, enter:
ping -c 6 domain.name
Where:
- 6 – number of packages,
- domain.name is the domain name or IP address.
How to change the packet size
By default, the command sends packets of size 56 bytes . This file size does not affect network performance when pinging. If necessary, the weight of the packages can be changed. To do this, use the -s option. Enter:
ping -s packet_size domain.name
Where:
- packet_size – packet size in bytes,
- domain.name is the domain name or IP address.
For example: ping -s 100 123.456.1.1
How to change the packet send time interval
By default, packets are sent at an interval of 1 second. If you want to make the interval smaller or larger, type:
ping -i 5 domain.name
Where:
- 5 – number of seconds between sending packets,
- domain. name is the domain name or IP address.
Please note! Setting values less than 0.2 seconds requires superuser rights.
Parameter combination
You can combine parameters to get the right command.
For example: ping -s 6 -s 100 domain.name .
How to test the load
To test the load, you need to organize a mass sending of packets. Please note , this command is only available for superuser. Type:
ping -f IP address
Thousands of requests will be sent per second. To stop sending, press Ctrl+C . The system will show you the number of sent and processed packages.
How to turn on the sound signal for notification of the start of work
If there is a failure on the server, you will need to dive deep into the system settings to solve it. For convenience, you can set the sound signal. As soon as the problem on the server is fixed, the utility will automatically notify the user that the connection has been restored.
