When you leave New York for the east, you can’t immediately figure out where you are: still in one of the “sleeping” areas of the “Big Apple” or has already crossed the city limits.
The same two-story houses surrounded by small green lawns, over which individual corporate buildings or high-rise residential buildings rise here and there, the familiar McDonald’s or Dunkin’ Donuts signs along the road. Everywhere the same gas stations and the same nerve-wracking traffic during rush hours.
What is the main difference between living in the eastern suburbs of Long Island and the very similar living in the neighboring urban borough of Queens?
– Taxes! – unanimously declare the inhabitants of the Long Island districts – the counties of Nassau and Suffolk. – We pay at least twice as much housing taxes as our Queens neighbors. The tax burden is becoming unbearable for many of us, especially for “native” Long Islanders who want to enjoy their usual quiet life in a quiet suburb without the daily tiring commute for higher earnings in Manhattan.
– We are being robbed by the rulers of the state of New York! local politicians agree in unison with their constituents, “Our two counties donate $3 billion more annually in taxes to Albany, and receive a return in services and grants from the state.
True, both local residents and politicians prefer not to mention some of the facts that distinguish life on Long Island from life in other areas and suburbs of greater New York. Policemen all over the country are jealous of their Suffolk counterparts, who for not too troublesome service in this county with a traditionally low crime rate are paid at the level of highly qualified programmers. Nearly all New York cops immediately apply at the start of their careers to the Suffolk Police Department in the vague hope of someday getting a transfer there and doubling their pay at the same time! Equally desperate attempts are being made by New York teachers, many of whom dream of working in better-off suburban schools with much better-mannered underage in uncrowded classrooms.
Long Island also has great beaches with spacious boardwalks and boat docks, botanical gardens and swimming pools, plenty of sports grounds for the popular girls’ football game there and the lesser-known lacrosse club game.
There are indoor skating rinks, extensive parks with golf courses and children’s free or affordable rides. There you can find farm museums functioning all year round, where you can relax from the bustle of the city surrounded by a leisurely rural life. The Long Island highways, framed by green forests and meadows, are always incomparably better maintained than New York’s freeways. Finally, many Long Island towns have created ideal conditions for relaxation, such as in the resort town of Mantok, where street signs “GIVE TO PEDESTRIAN! $1,000 FINE” and cops roll around the clean streets on electric scooters to avoid air pollution.
Of course, all these benefits must be financed from some local source. Picturesque farms and a few vineyards in both counties are unable to pay taxes on profits to the local treasury – many of them are kept afloat by federal subsidies. The situation is the same with industry: there are practically no large plants and factories left there – to the delight of the majority of Long Islanders who prefer to live surrounded by green oak forests.
It turns out that for all the delights of a suburban paradise, you need to pay with an increase in taxes for every Long Islander, which causes protest and demands from local authorities to find other ways to replenish the budget of these two counties.
Suffolk has had to develop and approve the following $75 million in cost-cutting measures this year: lay off about 1,000 employees, freeze salary increases for 311 managers, reduce the car fleet by 50 vehicles, and at the same time increase existing local service taxes. And in the neighboring county of Nassau, in addition, it was decided to review the entire system of providing assistance to the homeless, which, it turns out, also exist in these prosperous areas.
In this atmosphere of general discontent, Suffolk County CFO Joseph Sawicki suddenly suggested that the 51st state of America be formed on Long Island. In this case, New York State’s $8 billion annually would remain in the budget of the new state, with a single central government that would replace the two districts.
There is no doubt about the financial stability of this hypothetical 51st state: at present, the average annual income of the population in Nassau is over 80 thousand dollars per capita, in Suffolk – 70 thousand. So the newly formed state would have the highest income level in the country, leaving New York far behind – 46.97 thousand and New Jersey – 61.29 thousand.
Interestingly, two small counties together would form far from the smallest state. Although Long Island has only 2.8 million people, 19 other states in America have even fewer residents. For example, Arkansas has 2.7 million people, Nevada has 2.2 million, and others have even fewer. True, only Rhode Island and Delaware would be smaller in area.
Long Island would also benefit from a new political structure. In addition to congressmen, the “Islanders” would also be represented directly in Washington in the upper house of Congress by two senators (currently, the residence of New York State Senator Hillary Clinton is Westchester County, and Senator Chuck Schumer, a native of Brooklyn, once defeated former Senator D’Amato from Nassau County).
Long Island would also have its own legislature and court.
The US Constitution allows the formation of new states on the territory of America, however, setting one important condition: if only there is the consent of the state from which any part of it would like to secede. And there is a stumbling block here that is unlikely to ever fulfill the dreams of the Long Islanders to form the most prosperous state in America. The last time a peaceful spun off of a part of one of the states occurred back in 1820, when Maine separated from Massachusetts. And the unauthorized “withdrawal” of West Virginia in 1861 was made possible only by the general strife and confusion during the Civil War.
It is curious that almost all subsequent demands for the division of any states always came from more prosperous areas.
