Professional box lacrosse team formed in 2021. They are members of the NLL Eastern Conference which plays its matches at the MVP Arena with a capacity of 14,236. Albany FireWolves is owned by a financial group led by former NLL player Oliver Marty.
The team moved from Uncasville, Connecticut, where they were known as the “Black Wolves of New England”. The Black Wolves themselves were the result of a relocation of the Philadelphia Wings franchise. Under the name of the Philadelphia Wings, the franchise became the league champion 6 times (1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2001), after the franchise moved to Albany, all titles also moved there.
The team was officially named “FireWolves” on April 14, 2021 after an online naming competition. The last three names that were considered were “Attack”, “FireWolves” and “Black Arrows”. It was their first season in the NLL, which saw them immediately qualify for the playoffs.
