Leggings review Easton Mako
Leggings reviews have not appeared on icehockey360 for a long time. And all because after testing the CCM CL500, I switched to the use of a new model of gloves from Easton – Mako, which just the other day replaced Easton Synergy HSX.
Mako is the top model in the line of the same name, which in addition to it includes three more descending models: Mako M5, M3 and M1. The Mako line was conceived as the most ergonomic solution and its elements were created taking into account the natural movements of the player’s body in order to minimize the effect of wearing equipment on freedom of movement. In gloves, this philosophy is reflected in three main elements: a special fit, the Fast Fingers function (fast fingers), the material of the palm of the glove, and we will definitely talk about them during the review.
I propose to start with the design of gloves.
Glove design. The design of Mako is the first thing that comes up when discussing these gloves. Someone is delighted with him (including me), to someone, on the contrary, they seem funny and reminiscent of gloves for playing lacrosse. Easton offered a variety of color options, of which perhaps the most extraordinary is white gloves with orange accents. On my own behalf, I want to say that the design of the gloves is really bold and it makes you pay attention to them. Photos of all colors I give in the photo below.

For the test, I got black gloves with black synthetic inserts. Finishing of gloves is divided into two zones. The main finishing material is professional-grade nylon with very high wear resistance and strength, but able to bend easily and participate in the ventilation of the gloves. It is very textured and has a high degree of roughness.

The second material is a synthetic polyurethane liner with a glossy finish. The synthetic liner is located in areas where the greatest wear resistance is required, i.e. the most frequently affected zone. In addition to the protective functions, it is the glossy polyurethane that makes the design of prints bright and gives it individuality.

The palm of the gloves in all colors is made of white material. This is a suede, the manufacturer calls it AX-Suede, which is highly durable and does not dull the tactile sensations, making it possible to better feel the stick. The palms are streaked with paint with a slight rubberized effect. This application is designed to extend the life of the palm and to fix the club handle more firmly when throwing. The AX-Suede suede also trims the cuff segment with a textured manufacturer’s logo (covered with the same rubberized paint) and protective elements on the little finger side.

For better ventilation of the palm, all fingers are equipped with ventilation holes. Do not worry that these holes will cause the destruction of the palm. From my operating experience, I can say that the palm in Mako gloves is very durable and the holes are not deformed.

Four more vents are located on the inside of the thumb pocket. I note that the landing of the thumb is possible only in this special pocket, and it will not work to place the finger in the cavity that runs along the thumb protection.

Gassets are made of very dense elastic white material. They stretch well, creating an additional tight fit of the fingers in the glove, and also participate in the ventilation of the internal space of the glove.

Glove interior. The inner liner is made in two colors: the cuff is black, the inner liner is bright orange.

Two-tone liner called Dri-Lex. Of its main features, I would like to note a very pleasant soft texture, which creates a feeling of comfort inside the glove. In addition, this liner practically does not absorb moisture, due to which they dry quickly and, as a result, an unpleasant smell appears in them much later. Its positive properties include also its ability to remain soft and not rough even after drying.

I note that the insert itself is very thin, since the padding layer in it is extremely small.

The inner space of the glove, located under the liner, is also finished with a black synthetic liner, but with higher wear resistance. Under this material is a layer of soft foam rubber a few millimeters thick. Separately, I would like to note the presence of a Dri-Lex coating in the area of \u200b\u200bthe fingers, which gives the fit more comfort and convenience. In the above photos, you can also appreciate the very decent quality of tailoring these gloves. The number of protruding threads, sloppy and unsewn seams is minimized.

Protective glove padding. The top model in the line, the manufacturer tried to give maximum protection with minimum weight, while maintaining the intended fit. So, the back side of the palm of Mako gloves is closed by four longitudinal segments.
It turns out that the protection of the fingers almost reaches the protective cuff. I want to note that each of these segments is divided into two: the lower one covers about half of the finger, and the upper one covers its second half and the back of the hand. The filling of the lower segment and part of the upper segment is medium-density foam (but its density is clearly higher than the usual medium-density foam) 18 mm thick, on top of which a plastic plate is installed. The part that goes higher and covers the back of the hand has 14mm thick foam, on top of which there is also a plastic insert. A glossy overlay is sewn on top of each segment (it also performs a protective function to a small extent), which, together with a plastic plate, goes almost to the very protective cuff.

There is a classic fold between the upper and lower segments by cutting at the top. The upper segment of the protection has an additional cutout, which is located in an atypical place – on the underside of the segment.

The Fast Fingers System works by stretching and contracting elastic elements. In this case, an elastic strip is sewn to each of the four longitudinal segments, fixed in the upper part of the protection of the back of the hand. When the hand is clenched into a fist, the protective elements begin to move forward and thereby stretch the elastic bands. The resulting tension allows you to quickly unclench your hand. Let’s talk about the convenience of this function below.
How Fast Fingers works.
On the back of the hand there is a protective pad that covers the fastenings of the four longitudinal elements. Beneath a thick layer of glossy polyurethane is a mid-density foam cross member. A little lower – four segments of dense foam with a thickness of about 5 mm, covered with nylon.

There are three protective elements on the pinky side.
The two elements are filled with a 5mm layer of fairly soft foam. I note that in these gloves the little finger is closed to the very tip, and for some, as it turned out, this is one of the most important criteria for choosing new gloves. The protection of the edge of the palm has a much more powerful filling of dense foam with a thickness of about 8 mm.

The side of the index finger is protected by several elements and, again, these elements extend to the very tip of the finger. The outer two segments are filled with soft foam with a thickness of about 10 mm, each of which is equipped with a plastic insert. All the elements above are made using denser medium density foam, the thickness of which is from 15 to 18 mm, and inside each there is a plastic insert.

The design of the thumb guard is not original and is made in a quite traditional way. It is based on molded plastic, which forms a kind of cover for the thumb, which goes before the start of the protective cuff.
In the lower part, the plastic shield is covered with nylon, and in the upper part it is additionally covered with medium-density foam approximately 9-10 mm thick. There is no hinge for bending the finger, but the separate design of the protective cuff and thumb guard allows the finger to bend slightly at the junction of these elements. Of course, the protection of the thumb is equipped with a lock against dislocation.

The protective cuff is traditionally divided into lower and upper parts. The lower one is made of dense foam with a thickness of about 14 mm, but without the use of plastic, and is divided into two segments: the first, with the name of the manufacturer, is large in size, the second is small and covered with glossy polyurethane. Both segments of the lower part of the protective cuff are curved, which increases the angle of comfortable work in Mako gloves. The upper part of the cuff is also made of dense foam, but its thickness is somewhat less, about 12-13 mm.
It contacts the body through a layer of soft foam covered with a Dri-Lex liner. The upper part of the cuff is already divided into five segments to provide more comfortable deformation of its walls when working with brushes.

The two segments of the upper protective cuff on the palm side are made of dense foam, which is inferior in thickness to the rest of the segments and is approximately 6 mm.

Manufacturing quality and glove damage. In this section, I would like to point out the generally very decent workmanship of the product, clearly exceeding the average quality of Chinese tailoring, to which everyone is already accustomed.
Leggings after more than five months of active use (3-4 workouts per week).
In places there are protruding threads, but in very small quantities. And the materials that have with dignity endured many months of operation make us speak extremely positively about the quality of this product.

Nylon has not frayed or frayed in any place, retaining its weave structure. The polyurethane coating received some cosmetic damage due to blows to the hands.

Only in one place the glove lining was destroyed after being cut by a skate blade. The lining on the back of the hand was damaged. Otherwise, the gloves look very dignified and have not lost their luster and appearance of an almost new thing.

Personal impressions of Easton Mako gloves. First, I would like to talk about the three elements of the Mako philosophy that were implemented in this model. Perhaps it’s worth starting with the most unusual and attention-grabbing feature of “quick fingers”.
When the gloves are new, then the elasticity of the fingers is really impressive. When choosing leggings in a store, you will definitely note the resistance of the glove when clenching your hand into a fist. Let’s take a closer look at this point. On the one hand, the “fast fingers” function allows you to quickly open your hand and, accordingly, quickly intercept the club shaft. But at the same time, the flip side is that it is more difficult to squeeze the brush into a fist. But you get used to this feature pretty quickly. So, after finishing the test of Mako gloves, at the beginning of the operation of the model without this function, I immediately noticed that this elastic feeling in the hands is not enough. I want to draw your attention to the fact that over time, the effect of “fast fingers” decreases, and quite significantly.
The next element is the palm of the gloves. The manufacturer focused on the tactile feel of the stick in order to increase control over the puck.
The palm turned out really very pleasant. It has a good transfer of tactile sensations from the puck through the stick to the hands. However, today this will not surprise anyone, since most of the top models from leading brands offer very high quality and functional palms. What struck me most about Mako’s palms was the fact that in all the months of operation they never “double” after drying, unlike all the gloves that I had used before. Many talk about the similar properties of the Eagle cuffs, and so in Mako, the palms show themselves no worse. I put it in a big plus Mako.
I also note the very high wear resistance of the palm material. I use heat shrink tubing, but there are chips on the shaft of the stick that can bulge my palm. However, both of Mako’s palms look just fine, there is not a hint of material rolling and even the vents have completely retained their original shape. The clue to these properties can be that the composition of the suede material contains a lot of synthetic fibers that better tolerate abrasion and are not so prone to “tanning” when dried.
At least there is a feeling of a more synthetic thing from the gloves in question than from other gloves in which suede is perhaps closer to the properties of natural. But if this option gives the palms such important performance, then why not use it. The material is very pleasant to the touch and, as you can see from the segment of the protective cuff made of this suede, it practically does not get greasy from contact with the skin wet from sweat.
Condition of the palm of the right (upper) glove.
The palm has been slightly polished, but all the holes have retained their round shape and there is not even a hint of rolling on the material.
The condition of the palm of the left (lower) glove is also satisfactory.
The condition of the hands after washing is very decent.
The next item is the fit of the glove on the hand. There is a lot of information on the Internet about this. Someone calls them contour, someone narrowed. My opinion is that these are 2/3 contour gloves and only 1/3 tapered.
The fingers and palm in these gloves sit very tightly, which is typical of contour models, but the cuff for contour leggings is still somewhat more open. If you do not approach the definition of fit so pedantically, then we can say that the leggings sit on the arm very tightly, and the cuff is felt when working with brushes, but its competent cutting and design do not hinder movements. So it is made quite appropriate to Mako’s philosophy. In addition, a lot of fresh air enters through the cuff to cool the hands, and it also allows quick access to the hand in the glove even when the hand is already wet.
A few words about the dimension. Like the rest of the leggings I tested, I used the Mako in 15” size. From experience I can say that they feel on the hand a little less than competitors, which in general makes them more nimble in the hands.
It is impossible not to touch upon the weight of this model. And here Mako has something to brag about, since the weight of size 15 is only 299 grams, which is 1 gram less than the weight of the lightest gloves that I had on the test, and, in principle, the lightest gloves on the market, the CCM CL500.
The very light weight of Mako makes the process of their operation doubly pleasant. Imagine lightweight, tightly fitting gloves that are very mobile. But, unfortunately, as in the case of the CL500, such low weights cannot but affect the level of protection. By no means do I want to call it low, but it is lower than models that have denser and multi-layered foams and thicker plastic as filling. Mako’s protection level is enough for any fan. I was hit with a stick on both the cuff and the back of my hand, but they did not cause any serious consequences. The only problem I had was the slightly smaller size of the gaiters and as a result, the fingertips protruded through the elastic gussets a little more than the toe guards covered. Because of this, I received quite tangible blows on my fingertips several times.

It’s time to talk about the shortcomings, but surprisingly I have nothing to complain about. Except for the not very successful shape of the inner liner of the gloves.
Very often, it is simply impossible to pull your hand out of the gaiter without twisting the insert. Yes, and to insert it back and conveniently straighten it, it will take some time, which sometimes simply does not happen in the game.
Conclusion: Mako gloves became a discovery for me in a sense. They made me take a completely different look at the Easton leggings, which after such a long test, I can shamelessly recommend for purchase. On the positive side, I would like to point out high-quality finishing materials and palms, accurate workmanship, light weight, a nice snug fit that does not hinder hand movements, excellent internal coverage, and I personally liked the design. The disadvantage can be attributed perhaps not quite well-thought-out inner liner.
The main competitor is probably the CCM CL500. Both models will interest the consumer in lightness, which has recently been in high demand among players. The main difference between the two models is, of course, the fit: the Mako sit much tighter on the arm, while the CCM offers classic tapered leggings (tight in the fingers and further widening upward along the cone, ending with a wide-open cuff).
