How has Utah Valley University’s lacrosse program risen to the top of MCLA rankings. What factors contribute to their success in the 2023 season. Which other teams are making waves in the Division I lacrosse landscape.
Utah Valley University’s Ascension to MCLA Lacrosse Supremacy
In a stunning turn of events, Utah Valley University (UVU) has claimed the throne in Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) rankings. The Wolverines’ exceptional performance throughout the 2023 season has catapulted them to the top spot, showcasing their prowess on the field and their ability to compete with the best teams in the division.
UVU’s impressive 9-1 record speaks volumes about their dominance. Their sole loss came in a nail-biting match against Liberty, ranked 7th, with only a one-goal difference. The Wolverines have secured notable victories against formidable opponents such as South Carolina, Cal Poly, and Boise State, solidifying their position as the team to beat.
Key Factors Behind UVU’s Success
- Consistent performance throughout the season
- Victories against highly-ranked opponents
- Strong offensive strategies and defensive tactics
- Exceptional individual performances, such as Preston’s multiple MCLA Player of the Week honors
As the Wolverines prepare for their upcoming challenge against 11th-ranked Georgia Tech, all eyes will be on their ability to maintain their top position and continue their winning streak.
The Battle for MCLA Supremacy: Top Contenders and Their Performances
While Utah Valley University sits atop the MCLA rankings, several other teams are vying for the crown, each with their own impressive records and notable achievements.
Boston College Eagles: A Force to Be Reckoned With
The Boston College Eagles have shown remarkable resilience since their season opener loss to Florida State University. With an undefeated streak following that initial setback, the Eagles have proven themselves as serious contenders for the top spot. Their upcoming match against 10th-ranked Northeastern could have significant implications for the Commonwealth League Conference (CLC) playoffs.
Florida Gators: Chomping at the Bit
The Florida Gators have maintained an impressive record, with their only loss coming against Boston College. With 11 wins under their belt, including victories over ranked opponents such as South Carolina, Georgia, and Colorado, the Gators are a formidable force in the MCLA landscape. Their upcoming game against rival Florida State University could secure them a bye in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) tournament.
Georgia Bulldogs: Barking Up the Right Tree
The Georgia Bulldogs have shown consistency throughout the season, with their lone loss dating back to February against Florida. As they prepare to face 14th-ranked South Carolina and a strong Tennessee team, the Bulldogs aim to solidify their position in the SELC North division.
Undefeated Titans: San Diego State and Simon Fraser
Among the top-ranked teams, two stand out for their unblemished records: San Diego State University and Simon Fraser University.
San Diego State Aztecs: Dominating the West
The Aztecs have maintained a perfect record and are poised to secure their spot in the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) tournament. With their upcoming game against USC, San Diego State looks to extend their winning streak and cement their position as a top contender in the MCLA.
Simon Fraser University: Canada’s Lacrosse Powerhouse
As the only other undefeated team in Division I, Simon Fraser University has been turning heads with their performance. The Canadian team is set to play their first home games against Western Washington and Washington State, providing an opportunity to showcase their skills on familiar turf.
Rising Stars and Comeback Stories in MCLA Lacrosse
The 2023 MCLA season has been filled with surprising performances and remarkable comebacks from teams across the division.
Virginia Tech Hokies: Climbing the Ranks
The Virginia Tech Hokies have made significant strides this season, recently securing a crucial win over 9th-ranked Concordia. With an 11-2 record, the Hokies have positioned themselves as serious contenders in the MCLA landscape.
South Carolina Gamecocks: The Underdog Story
Perhaps the most intriguing narrative of the season belongs to the South Carolina Gamecocks. Despite a challenging start that saw them lose seven consecutive games, the Gamecocks have bounced back with impressive victories over Virginia Tech and Liberty, both of whom were top-seeded at the time. Their resilience and ability to perform under pressure have earned them a spot in the rankings despite their losing record.
Conference Battles and Playoff Implications
As the regular season winds down, several crucial matchups are on the horizon that could significantly impact conference standings and playoff seedings.
Southeastern Lacrosse Conference (SELC) Showdowns
The SELC is heating up with several key matchups in the coming weeks. Florida State’s game against rival Florida could determine their fate in the SELC tournament, while Georgia’s clash with South Carolina carries significant implications for the SELC North division.
Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC) Scramble
The SLC playoff race remains highly competitive, with teams like Chapman, Concordia, and Arizona State vying for crucial wins to secure their positions. Chapman’s upcoming game against UCLA and Arizona State’s match against Grand Canyon University could prove pivotal in determining the final standings.
Individual Achievements and Honors in MCLA Lacrosse
Throughout the season, several players have stood out for their exceptional performances, earning recognition and accolades from the lacrosse community.
Warrior Lacrosse Player of the Week Honors
Utah Valley University’s Preston has been a standout player, earning a spot on the MCLA Warrior Lacrosse Division I Player of the Week Honor Roll for the third time this season. His nine-point weekend performance showcases the individual talent that has contributed to UVU’s success.
Emerging Talent: Freshmen Making Their Mark
The future of MCLA lacrosse looks bright, with freshmen like Arizona’s Louden Sundling earning recognition for their impressive performances. Sundling’s inclusion in the Warrior Honor Roll for his strong showing against TCU demonstrates the impact that young players are having on their teams’ success.
The Road Ahead: Key Matchups and Tournament Preparations
As the regular season enters its final stages, teams are gearing up for crucial matchups that could make or break their postseason aspirations.
Utah Valley’s Ultimate Test
Utah Valley University faces a significant challenge in their upcoming game against 11th-ranked Georgia Tech. This matchup will not only test the Wolverines’ ability to maintain their top ranking but also provide valuable experience against a strong opponent as they prepare for postseason play.
Boston College’s Conference Clash
The Eagles’ upcoming game against Northeastern holds substantial weight in the CLC playoff picture. A victory for Boston College could solidify their position as a top seed and provide momentum heading into the postseason.
Florida’s Rivalry Showdown
The Florida Gators’ final regular-season game against in-state rival Florida State University carries significant implications. A win for the Gators would not only secure bragging rights but also clinch a bye in the SELC tournament, providing a valuable advantage in their quest for a championship.
As the 2023 MCLA lacrosse season reaches its climax, the landscape is ripe with excitement, uncertainty, and the promise of thrilling competition. From Utah Valley University’s rise to prominence to the compelling storylines of underdogs and undefeated powerhouses, this season has showcased the depth and quality of talent in collegiate lacrosse.
The coming weeks will undoubtedly bring more surprises, upsets, and memorable moments as teams battle for conference supremacy and position themselves for success in the postseason tournaments. Lacrosse enthusiasts and casual fans alike can look forward to an electrifying conclusion to what has already been an exceptional season of MCLA action.

Oxford Saïd Business School MBA student and Oxford University men’s lacrosse team member Sergio Navarro talked about the game of lacrosse and what the Oxford MBA and lacrosse have in common.
Lacrosse (lacrosse) – a team game like hockey: a player throws a rubber ball into the opponent’s goal with a stick with a net at the end.
Lacrosse encourages entrepreneurial spirit and teamwork. “We are more than a team. We are a brotherhood, among us there are Ph.D candidates, students of the MBA program,” said Sergio.
What do lacrosse and business have in common?
Innovation. In lacrosse, we look for competitive advantages and use them to get the ball into the opponent’s goal. We are looking for effective combinations on the field that will allow us to win. The same principle of real-time innovation applies in business.
Communications. Communication helps win competitions, cut costs, save lives. Research shows the benefits of communications in sports, business, and medicine. We encourage each member of the team to “talk” during the game about the roles, about what we see on the site. During timeouts, we analyze in detail the missed opportunities, conduct a joint brainstorming of additional opportunities. The same applies in business.
Team work. This is the key to success on any site. Getting good results depends on cooperation, communication, partnership. Each player on the court knows his role, position, the role of team members.
