A look into Kentucky lacrosse – Kentucky Kernel
- Features
Mac Moore, Reporter
November 11, 2022
This spring, the University of Kentucky mens lacrosse team will set its eyes on returning to Annapolis, Maryland, for the Naptown National Challenge, and they need Big Blue Nation’s help to get there.
The lacrosse team has been around for over 30 years and is currently a member of the Division 2 Midwest South Conference in the National College Lacrosse League (NCLL).
Coach Taylor McCoun leads the team, entering his second season as head coach. McCoun was assistant coach for five seasons before taking the reins.
McCoun collaborates with team captain JT Mooser, a junior finance and marketing major, who has played midfield since his freshman year and is stepping up this season as one of the team’s captains. McCoun said he appointed Mooser as a captain this season for his ability to use his voice to lead the team on and off the field.
The two main goals that McCoun and Mooser set for the team were to “return to Annapolis” and “beat Louisville.”
While beating Louisville is a common goal for each Kentucky team, the stakes of the match are higher for the men’s lacrosse team.
Each year, the team squares off against the Cardinals for the Midwest South Championship, with the winning team going to the Naptown National Championship in Annapolis.
This past year, the Wildcats welcomed quarterback Will Levis to their showdown with the Cardinals along with a loud turnout from Big Blue Nation. The Cardinals ended the team’s season, but Mooser was still proud of the large student turnout.
“It shows that the game is growing, and it shows that people care about us as a team,” he said. “It’s nice to know that people are paying attention to us and nice to get some exposure to the student body.”
McCound and Mooser said that there are still many students that are unaware that the University of Kentucky has a lacrosse team, even though the culture of the team sets them apart from other teams.
Mooser said that he and his teammates are “a good mesh and a melting pot of personalities, and you would’ve thought that they have all been friends since birth.”
McCoun and Mooser also said the team grows together off the field through McCoun’s “quote of the week,” team dinners, alumni games and more.
“The way these guys deliver the sport of lacrosse along with how they push themselves to their potential is what makes this team unique,” McCoun said.
The team is expecting a few road trips this upcoming season, including a trip to Ole Miss that Mooser said the whole team is excited for.
“Some of the best moments with my teammates come on our road trips. This is when we bond together the most,” he said.
Along with the road trips, dinners and alumni games, McCoun and his players are holding their first annual golf scramble fundraiser on Nov. 5. McCoun also said that this year, he plans to hold more community service events with the team to give back to the state of Kentucky.
The team’s opponents this year are some familiar faces in Lexington such as Tennessee, LSU and Vanderbilt. The team is expecting its schedule for this season to be released in the first week of January 2023.
Mooser said he looks forward to being a captain for his team this year, and he has already developed a plan to ensure the team’s success.
“(I want to) lead by example and hold everyone accountable, including myself,” he said.

20 years of innovation: how basketball video analytics has changed in Kentucky and Syracuse
The use of video analytics technology has grown exponentially. basketball over the past 20 years. Catapult video solutions have been used to support key coaching and recruiting decisions, resulting in some of the largest player-focused analyzes among NBA, NCAA and international basketball teams.
We recently sat down with video coordinators from the Syracuse University and University of Kentucky basketball teams to discuss new developments coming to Catapult. video analysis and innovation they have seen in two decades with Catapult.
“Video analytics has come a long way since I started working with Catapult in 1997,” said Todd Blumen, video coordinator for the Syracuse University basketball team. “Then we would set up two VCR tapes, pause and record to rewind important clips, which is a far cry from where we are today.”
1996 NCAA Champion Tony Delk | Basketball video analysis
University of Kentucky instructional video coordinator Tim Asher has also been using the Catapult since the 90s. “The first system we had was revolutionary, but compared to today it is far behind. At the time, I didn’t even think about filming a whole game, you just had to grab the clip you want and then delete the others when you run out of space,” Asher explained.
“Now you can grab everything and forget about deleting clips. Coaches can now request any clip in the game and in just a couple of clicks they will have it,” he continued.

Storage Limits: Connecting to the Cloud
Catapult has worked hard over the past 20 years to consistently provide the best solutions for the world’s top teams. One of the most famous innovations was the increase in storage space.
Blumen explained: “The original machine contained six 9 GB hard drives with a total of 56 GB of storage, which equaled about three and a half hours of a basketball movie.”
Asher shared: “Now your phone has 128 GB and storage is more affordable. The fact that you can store so much more has made our video analytics technology better and faster, but removing storage limits was key for us. ”
Catapult recently made permanent recording possible and lifted previous storage restrictions with the help of cloud technology.
“I’ve been recording everything now and have been doing it ever since Catapult made it possible,” Blumen said. “I’ve been recording every regular season game since 2013 and every game my ACC opponents have since 2016.”
“It’s great to have all these games and clips. Before the start of the season, we can set up shortcuts for game clips. We will show players some clips from previous seasons so they can work on areas of their game and allow our coaches to study the players and squads in advance. I have 54 TB of games and clips freely available.”
Both NCAA basketball video coordinators said the removal of video analytics storage restrictions was especially helpful last season.
“Due to the pandemic, we have reduced about 800 high school games, but in a typical year you will probably have 50 games to compare. So right now we’re very rich in “videos,” Asher said.
“We can record every NBA, FIBA and AAU game. We break down players and breakers, we have employees constantly looking for different play options into players who play really well in the NBA and other leagues, which allows our players to repeat some of their moves.”

Future: contextualized data
“There is no off-season in my video room. You either have things you’re working on for your current players or you’re working on future players because coaches are leaning more towards the video side of things every year,” Usher explained.
“One of the innovations that has really driven decision making by our coaches and our team is the ability to capture results at halftime. We show our teams ideas at halftime and can influence the game before it’s over. In addition, Catapult made things easier with being able to see from multiple angles on the iPad, allowing us to do a better job for our coaches. ”
Catapult contextualized data with video offerings backed by recent $45m capital raising to acquire industry-leading sports software SBG.
“Based on what I’ve seen, I think the set of tools is very good, I really liked the tools. It seems to be quite a flexible set of tools to use in the future,” Asher explained.
Syracuse’s Blumen continued, “I love the logging tools, the multiple entries, the multi-platform component is huge – now I can stay on my PC instead of switching to my Mac.”

Customer Success: A Competitive Advantage
Despite a powerful and flexible video analytics solution for basketball, what keeps Asher and Blumen as loyal customers is Catapult’s best-in-class customer success.
“There are a lot of companies that want to come in and sell you software and then you’ll never see them again. Catapult is not a band that does it, they will keep in touch,” Asher explained.
“The Catapult team will take our feedback into account and then implement it into the product. They are very responsive and we trust that Catapult will provide us with the tools we need to get our job done, helping the team do what they need to do. For that reason alone, I’ve been with these guys since 1994.”
