The net of the stick is not a friend
In our country, many people know firsthand about horse polo, even despite its well-known high cost and a certain elitism. But polocross sounds unusual, and has not yet reached Russia. In this article we will try to figure out what kind of sport it is and “what it is eaten with”.
A bold idea
Polocross dates back to 1938. Once a married couple from Sydney (Australia), Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hurst, read an article in an English magazine about horses called “Polo Cross”. Both were passionate lovers of horses and equestrian sports, so they immediately decided to go to the UK and personally find out what kind of “bird” it was.
Arriving in the UK, the couple traveled to the National Riding School in Kingston Vale near London, where two trainers came up with a new exercise for the school’s students to improve the riding and handling skills of the young riders.
Two people took part in the indoor game. On the wall, the places where the ball was returned to the game were marked with a marker, and basketball nets on each side of the field served as the goal, respectively. Rackets were polo sticks, similar to a net, where the hammer was replaced by a net, which was used to catch the ball. The idea was to catch a ball that was slightly larger than a tennis ball, take it to the end of the field and throw it into the ring.
King of Games
Mr. and Mrs. Hurst saw the potential for a new equestrian sport in this simple exercise. They returned to Australia with clubs, balls and books by Alf Pitti, a famous equestrian and professional polo player. After long discussions, many hours of training and a serious revision of the rules, through trial and error, the spouses created a new exciting game for people of all ages, which was called “POLOCROSS”.
As mentioned above, it was decided that the team will include six people who will play in threes alternately in order, firstly, to be able to rest, and secondly, to use fewer horses (not six, but just three).
Unlike polo, where any player has the right to score, in polocross this prerogative is given only to the number one player, and the remaining team members clearly perform their own, different functions. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst decided that this distribution of roles would ensure that players number two and number three, unable to score themselves, would simply have to pass to their attacker and, accordingly, the game would become more exciting, dynamic and intense.
Fifty years later, despite many ideas to improve the original idea, change the size of the field and the number of participants, polocross is still one of the favorite sports and the “king of horse games”.

He showed everyone present the basic essence of the game and demonstrated how to catch the ball. Polocross liked the audience so much and was received with such enthusiasm that soon the members of the club willingly began to play it.
Some time later, a meeting was held in Ingelburn, at which it was decided to create the first polocross club, and the rules of the game were officially approved.

The basis of polocross is, as you might guess, two games – horse polo and lacrosse, a game with a ball on foot. The Middle East is considered to be the birthplace of polo – from there it gradually spread to India, where it was later adopted by the English colonists. Lacrosse is an equally ancient game that was invented by the American Indians who lived in what is now Canada. Then the team could include up to a hundred people, and the size of the field was calculated in kilometers. Today in lacrosse, two teams aim to score a goal against an opponent using a rubber ball, feet, and a stick with a net, often referred to as a “racquet”. Over time, the game gained great popularity among the French and was even included in the program of the Summer Olympic Games several times.

During World War II, the game was naturally forgotten, but a number of enthusiasts, mainly, did not allow her to finally sink on the summer. In South Africa, polocross appeared in the early 1950s, and the first international tournament on the continent was held in 1968 in Rhodesia, followed by the Australian in 1971. The International Polocross Council was formed on June 21st, 1976 at a meeting on the Queensland Gold Coast in Australia and was founded by Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Rhodesia and South Africa. The purpose of the International Polocross Council is to popularize international competitions, exchange experience, develop a common set of rules and, in general, promote the development of this sport throughout the world. The members of the Council are Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, United States of America, South Africa, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Canada and Ireland.
Don’t jump or you’ll lose
Just like polo, polocross is divided into six chackers, lasting eight minutes each, but only three players from each team are on the field at a time (the second three are waiting in reserve and changes in the next half). Instead of clubs, players use special rackets (nets) with which they catch a rubber ball, beat it off the ground and pass it to other players.
The rules in polocross are slightly stricter than in regular polo: the field (measuring 55 m by 146.5 m) is divided by foul lines into three zones through which the ball cannot be thrown – you must either pass or hit the ball on the ground. Only the striker has the right to score a goal – player number one, player number two can only play in the middle zone, and player number three acts as a goal defender.

Polocross appeared in Ireland twenty years ago.
Two brothers, David and Ivor Young, hosted the game at their horse base in County Wexford as an additional tourist attraction. Like the Hursts, David read an article about the sport in one of the British equestrian magazines. Seriously interested, a few weeks later the brothers invited the Australian coach to their club. At first, polocross was played only in Wexford, but then Brian McMahon from Limerick heard about the new game – it was there that the second club was founded, and from there polocross quickly spread throughout Ireland.
Countries and continents
The first international test series of matches in the history of polocross took place in Australia in May-June 1983: then two meetings were held between teams from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Zimbabwe . Despite the fact that polocross is still far from the popularity of dressage and show jumping, it was not ignored at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.
Fourteen players of all ages and skill levels from the American Polocross Association and Pony Club USA showed off their skills for four days at the North Arena at Kentucky Horse Park. These exhibition matches were a historic moment and provided an opportunity to draw the attention of thousands of equestrians, athletes from various disciplines and riding enthusiasts who gathered at the games to this reckless and exciting equestrian “basketball”. In addition to the athletes taking part in the matches, their families and friends came to support the polocross, who volunteered to help with the performances free of charge.
New and old
So, as they say, everything new is well forgotten old. Although polocross is still young and has not yet appeared in our country, every year it gains more and more recognition: clubs are opened, competitions are held, sections for children are created. Equestrian sports should and have the right to be diverse, because then more and more horses become in demand and more and more people can find something to their liking.
