Foreword
His name is Kronos.
The son of his father, his people is a demon and no one else. Born from the union of two powerful demons – Tartarus and Diverra. The sorcerers prophesied for him a short life, but he did not give up, from the very first breath. The fact is that they tried to cast a bleeding spell on the father – gradually killing the curse, sucking out all the life force of the enchanted. But the spell did not hit him, but lurked in the blood and passed on to the young demon. Parents were generals, one of the strongest demons in the kingdom of darkness. They tirelessly searched for an opportunity to dispel the magic and give their child a chance for salvation. But all attempts were in vain. Life in it was maintained by constant infusions of energy from the artifacts containing it, and when their supplies ran out, the mother, in desperation, began to share hers.
At that time there was a change of power in hell. High General Fiaarteon, father of Tartarus, was replaced by General Caracas. There were many rumors and speculation about these times, but only a few knew the truth.
Most of the demons perceived it as true that Fiarteon stole the most ancient artifact – the sphere of chaos, and, having gone to the earth, to the kingdom of people, hid it there. For what purpose, no one knew, but it was an extremely insane act that betrayed each and every demon. This legend was woven from the words of Hodir, the supreme sorcerer who took part in the battle with him. He never managed to find the sphere he created himself.
Kronos’ family was slandered, and everyone turned away from her, leaving the newborn with no chance of healing. But some time later, the supreme general Caracas and the supreme sorcerer Hodir offered to help, try to conduct a purification ceremony. But this required one demonic soul. The mother, without a moment’s hesitation, decided to sacrifice herself in order to save her child. Tartarus tried to dissuade Diverra from this decision, offering to give his soul in return, but the council of demons flatly refused his father’s request to grant him freedom.
There was no other way out but to use the soul of the mother. Tartarus again knew the bitterness of loss when the lifeless body of his wife, after the ritual, fell to the floor. On that day, two souls were burned at once. Hodir failed to dispel the spell, the magic was ancient and extremely strong, so he directed all the mother’s vital energy into the child, giving him a couple of decades of life. The magician also learned how to dispel the spell – the one who cast it had to die at the hands of the damned. Kronos had a thorny path to recovery, but now he had a chance.
Thousands of days later, the father continued to take care of his son without interruption. Years passed, and the demon grew, and with it its strength. Kronos comprehended the technique of owning a sword, the art of spells. His father taught him everything he knew and soon Kronos became strong enough to take part in the battles.
Chapter One
One day, sitting on the threshold of my house, I was waiting for my father, who was supposed to return after a hard battle, where he won a brilliant victory.
Our house, like so many others in this circle of hell, was a two-story building, shaped like a tower, ending in a high spire at the top. At the entrance hung the coat of arms of the family – a bloody griffin, denoting: power, power and strength. Nearby, there were also outwardly similar houses in which other demons lived. All around, for hundreds of meters, there was only scorched earth, and on the horizon, a fading sun forever frozen. Two figures appeared at the end of the street, slowly approaching me. Recognizing my father in the outlines and becoming interested in his companion, I got up from the steps and went to meet them.
– Father, I’m glad to see you! You’re not hurt, are you okay? You look very tired.
“Everything is fine, even though the battle was very difficult, but we survived and coped with the onslaught of the angels, curbing their fury,” the father said almost in a whisper.
The demon standing next to the father introduced himself and spoke to me:
– My name is Caracas.
I am the supreme general. Glad to meet you,” the general said, holding out his hand to me.
– This is a great honor for me, – out of surprise, I could no longer squeeze out a word from myself and timidly, as a sign of respect, shook his hand.
In front of me was the same demon that controls the generals who lead troops into battle. A born leader and an invincible warrior, as time has shown. That is what many people told me who even heard his name out of the corner of their ear.
– Let’s go, Tartarus, they are waiting for us, the council wants to reward you for outstanding services to the legion. This battle was a turning point in the course of the war!
“One more minute,” the father replied. After giving me a fixed look, he grabbed the hilt of his sword and drew the blade.
– Son, I will give you this sword. It was forged deep in the bowels of hell by the legendary warrior and council member your grandfather. The sword is endowed with great power.
It’s a family heirloom, take care of it. Soon you will be able to test this blade in combat yourself.
At the very moment when Tartarus handed over the sword to his son, Kronos noticed how the face of the supreme general changed. Literally for a moment, his eyes filled with rage, but the young demon did not attach any importance to this.
– Father, I will not let you down, I swear to be a worthy receiver and accept this gift with honor! – Interrupting his son’s enthusiasm, the father added: – Good, but that’s not all. – Pulling out an old scroll from his pocket, Tartarus unfolded it. “This is another relic of our Kronos family, a power that is rightfully yours. This is my father’s seal, the curse of Arzatheros. Now she belongs to you.
– Ranumos Putanos Satta, Azios Chaima. – Tartarus cast a spell and on the right forearm of Kronos, through an unbearable burning sensation, a symbol appeared – that same seal.
– As imprudent of me, your new seal will require a lot of energy from you, you do not yet have such reserves.
But now I will fix it. – The seal on Tartarus’ hand lit up with white light and his life force began to flow into the seal of Kronos. “Your body has to get used to the new energy, so you won’t immediately feel the growing strength in yourself. Remember what I taught you son, you will soon take the path destined by fate.
– Let’s hurry, Tartarus, the Council does not like to wait! – Persistently said the supreme general.
Kronos had the feeling that his father was saying goodbye to him, anxiety overwhelmed his mind, but he did not dare to stop his father. Caracas, waving his hand, created a portal in which he, along with Tartarus, disappeared.
Kronos went home. On the way, he thought about the war and the meaning of the eternal confrontation between light and darkness. Entering his house and sitting down on a bench that stood in the corridor, he began to examine the weapons. The sword really looked majestic: a curved blade with several teeth, in the middle of which 2 red stones were inserted.
The guard connecting the blade and the handle was the coat of arms of the family – a griffin, spreading its wings wide. At the end there was a small peak, in the center of which there was a stone, all of the same red color. Kronos was filled with pride to hold this relic in his hands. The young demon decided to practice with a new weapon and honed his skills for several hours.
Suddenly, a sharp stabbing pain was reflected in the heart. The anxiety that appeared after the departure of the father did not subside. There was a knock on the door, “I didn’t expect anyone, who could it be?” thought Kronos, going up to the door and opening it, he saw unfamiliar demons standing on the threshold.
– Did you want something? – He asked uncertainly.
– Kronos, you must come with us, we were sent by the supreme general. – Said one of them.
– Did something happen?
– We don’t know anything, we were sent for you. Another demon replied.
– Okay, I’ll go with you.
– Taking his sword, he went to the portal created by one of the demons, all together they were transported to the council hall.
Kronos has never been to this place. Looking around, he noticed an engraved fresco on the ceiling, which depicted Lucifer, who was cast out by the god. Huge portraits of generals, past and present, hung on the walls. Blood oozed from all the paintings, it gathered in one big stream and fell into a bloody fountain. The floor was made of black stone, reflecting the entire hall. Only generals, healers, warriors and sorcerers were allowed here – those who won more than once in battles with angels. There were a huge number of demons in the hall, Kronos did not know any of them. Everyone watched him contemptuously, for them he was a descendant of a traitor, a miserable rag and nothing more.
The doors of the hall opened, and the supreme general appeared before everyone:
– Brothers, a tragedy has occurred. Tartarus is no longer with us.
Tears immediately came to Kronos’ eyes:
– What… what happened?
– The portal we entered, Kronos, has been intercepted.
I don’t know how, but we ended up not here, but in a place where angels surrounded us. Your father and I fought until we lost our strength, but after a long battle, the angels still managed to win. When trying to attack with angels, your father saved me by shielding me with his chest. Dying, he asked me to retreat, otherwise his sacrifice would have been in vain. I immediately went to hell to gather all the most important warriors and tell about what had happened.
Something broke in me at that moment. I felt how hatred and despair took my heart in a vise and closed. My father and I were very close, and now, when he is gone, I will not deviate a single step from fulfilling my oath! I watched as everyone dispersed, feeling sorrow and anger, and could not move. The Supreme General approached me:
– We need to talk, let’s go.
I had no choice but to follow him. We walked along the corridor, on the walls of which hung the armor of great warriors who gave their lives on the battlefield.
– Kronos, I understand how hard it is for you now, and I offer my sincere condolences. But you have to be strong and hold back your emotions. You have a long and difficult path ahead of you, but if you gather all your will into a fist, you will reach such heights that you did not even dare to think about. – The general’s voice was extremely harsh and seemed to beat in my heart, tearing the wound even more.
– What do you mean? – I asked.
– I’m talking about the mission we’re preparing you for!
– Missions?
– It’s too early to talk about it. Tomorrow you will start your new journey. As befits a real warrior, you will train to manage your power, that potential, which is so huge that even I wonder what can come of all this. In the meantime, rest, you will need strength like never before.
I left the room and went to the portal from which I came. The general’s words were spinning in my head. Am I that important? Mission? What did he talk about.
I don’t want to think about it, I really need to rest. Father why did you leave me now.…
When I got home, I just fell on the bed and immediately fell asleep.
The next day I received a letter from the supreme general, which said that I needed to appear in the first zone of the seventh circle of hell, in a city called Dit. Portals between the circles were available, and everyone could move around in order to explore the surroundings. And for high-ranking demons, it was an order control mechanism. Having gone to the nearest common portal, I moved to the destination. The entrance to the city was open and not guarded. Here, as in every circle of hell, sinners were tortured. Tyrants and robbers boiled in ditches filled with red-hot blood. Their screams filled everything around, and the centaurs, standing on a hill, shot those who managed to emerge. Going further into the city, I saw dozens of demons, looking at everything around with the same curiosity as I did.
– I am Kronos, son of Tartarus! – I introduced myself, coming closer to them.
The demons looked at me and, grinning, continued to communicate with each other.
A demon dressed in light armor came out of a portal that manifested nearby – I am Margat. By order of the supreme general, from today I will train you! Weapon wielding, powerful spells, and inner energy control await those who will be worthy of learning. To find out which of you has the potential, you will fight with training rippers. If you can defeat at least one of them, you will stay. If not, you don’t belong among us. – Margat opened a portal, from which creatures emerged, in whose mutilated bodies armor was implanted. Instead of hands, they had round blades, and iron masks covered their faces. Despite their rather heavy gait, they immediately rushed to attack the demons. Reflecting the attacks of the creatures, the demons now and then jumped back, waiting for the moment to counterattack, but it did not come. The lifeless eyes of the rippers reflected only indifference, they tirelessly delivered cold-blooded blows with their blades, breaking through the guard posts of demons.
Kronos immediately recognized that the rippers were controlled by Margat, but it was not possible to approach him, he was guarded by the two largest creatures. The rippers managed to seriously injure some demons, and they will switch to others that are still able to fight. Kronos, watching this picture, decided to correct the situation by trying to use his seal. He had not yet experienced it in battle, but thanks to his father’s lessons, he had a rough idea of how to release his energy. Noticing that the demon was concentrating, Margat directed all the rippers at him. Frightened by the approaching enemies, Kronos began to step back, at that moment his sword began to glow with white light. As if possessing its own mind, the sword, controlling Kronos, began to reflect enemy attacks and deliver direct blows to the weak points of the joints of the creatures’ armor. Meanwhile, the demons capable of fighting rushed into battle with special rippers. When all the enemies fell, Kronos joined the demons fighting against the last two enemies.
Under the control effect of the sword, he climbed up the ripper’s back and cut through his mask. Piercing the back of the head, the blade came out of the forehead. The demon drew a blade and, jumping on another ripper, killed him with a blow to the forearm.
– Impressive! At such a young age, you are already the owner of the seal. Margat said.
– This is a gift from my father. I swore that I would become the greatest warrior, no matter what! Kronos answered.
– For your bravery in battle, I will create a healing ether so that you and other demons can heal your wounds. – Margat, directing the flow of his energy into the ground, took out a bowl filled with red liquid. “Drink, my brothers, enjoy the taste of victory.
Thus ended my first test of joining the Margata group. Every next day we gathered in different places, fighting each other and various creations of Margat and learning new spells. Over time, training hardened me, knocking out unnecessary thoughts from my head.
Having learned to use inner energy, I soon defeated Margat in a one-on-one battle. After this victory, I began to fight in duels in a new group. Gradually cultivating my strength, I became the strongest demon in the group, and Margat and the supreme general decided that my appearance on the battlefield should take place immediately.
Chapter Two
A few days later Kronos was called to his first battle with the angels. While in the armory with the rest of the demons, he was preparing for the upcoming event. There were about a hundred demons in the army, many of them were newcomers, just like Kronos, this was noticeable by their behavior and a small amount of fear in their eyes. Unexpectedly for everyone, the supreme general entered the room, all the demons bowed as a sign of respect.
– Greetings, Kronos. – Approaching him, said Caracas.
– My respects, Supreme General.
– Today is a great day for you! Show what you are capable of!
– Yes! After all, that’s what I’m here for.
– I have a present for you. The general held out the box that he had been holding in his hands all this time. Opening it, before the eyes of Kronos appeared neatly folded armor. “This type of armor is only worn by elite warriors. Your father was a great demon and the time will soon come when you will surpass him. They rightfully belong to you.
– I thank you for giving me the opportunity to be here, to participate in the war, which I have been dreaming of for a very long time.
Putting on his armor, Kronos looked into the mirror hanging on the wall. A helmet with wings billowing upwards, in the center of which was a black mark, which meant that a warrior in this armor was especially dangerous. Putting on equipment with it was very life-threatening, because most of the enemies would attack the warrior with this mark in the first place. Worn on the shoulders, wide, figured pauldrons visually expanded the body. They, like the cuirass, were black, and a bright red cloak with the coat of arms of the council covered the back.
The new armor of Kronos was significantly different from those worn by other demons. Everyone was dressed in a single classic standard of armor – plate armor, no frills. Horns were attached to the helmet to intimidate the enemy. It was allowed to show individuality in only one thing – in your weapon. Swords, axes, daggers and spears, everyone had different ones. They were united only by the symbols applied to the weapons, denoting: strength and courage, pain and hatred – what the opposing side had to face.
I wonder why the high general gave me such a gift? Perhaps he wants to test me? Kronos thought. After talking with other demons, he learned that none of those present here owns the seal. Only tens of thousands of demons could possess the seal, having earned it in battle or for other feats. His father said that some demons have not one, but several seals, and can focus energy at once into everything at the same time, leaving the enemy no chance of salvation. The lack of a seal among the demons alerted Kronos.
Was it worth it to let out such weak, not yet ready to fight demons? He thought to himself. His seal began to sparkle, foreshadowing danger.
General Lacrosse, commander of the troops, suddenly entered the room. One of the most powerful generals, under his command the demons won brilliant victories, and he took the life energy of the defeated heroes. Mad, walking over corpses, towards his goals – this is how those who were with him in battle told me about him. Lacrosse wore an imposing general’s uniform: the armor was forged right in the mouth of a volcano, they were strong, their owner was almost impossible to crush. Deep artificially inflicted slits converging in the very center of the torso emitted red demonic energy. The cloak was deep black in color, it reflected the general’s internal state – complete pitch darkness. On the cloak was the coat of arms of the council, just like every general who commanded a demon army. The helmet completely hid his face, only his eyes were visible, filled with unimaginable rage, from which they were bright red.
– Time to go! he shouted and, leaving the armory, went to the backyard of the council fortress. Everyone else followed him. In the courtyard stood a huge statue of Kelsis, the lord of hell, who replaced the past. For many years no one saw him, he left Caracas as his successor, so he could rightfully be considered the most important demon. Two portals for teleportation were created on the sides of the statue. Behind the lined up demons were the tombstones of the greatest demons – generals, sorcerers and others who made an invaluable contribution to the victories of the demons on the battlefield. In the center of the burials there was a spiral twisting upwards, inside of which, once there was a sphere of chaos.
General Lacrosse gathered everyone to make a speech:
– Victory! Nothing can be more important! You are here for this one moment. How much did each of you sacrifice to be here? We are demons! And it is in our blood to fight to the last breath. Today, we will come face to face with our sworn enemy – the angels.
General Lacrosse’s words were inspiring. Kronos looked at the warriors, they were filled with courage and hatred – it was fascinating. Each represented a serious opponent, it seemed, together, they could not be defeated.
– Get ready! Begin! Lacrosse was the first to pass through the portal, Caracas glanced at Kronos and slowly left the hall.
Having passed through the portal, a lifeless desert appeared before the eyes of Kronos. Dry, cracked earth in places and nothing else around. High up, in the freshly clear sky, black clouds gathered in a few seconds and thunder rumbled several times. The peals of thunder intensified with every second, and finally, an army of angels appeared on the horizon. A general and someone else dressed in a white robe walked in front. The young demon tried to see his face, noticing this, he covered himself with a hood. After talking with the general angel, they shook hands, and he disappeared. In the eyes of the angel, fear appeared from the agreement he had concluded.
Those who wear the white robe are the members of the council, the highest angels. His presence on the battlefield was by no means accidental, Kronos thought. Council members never appear at such battles, especially for the purpose of concluding any agreements. There is no doubt that this is an impostor. But then who, if not a demon, can hide under the guise of a council? Thoughts about this flashed instantly, there was no time to think about anything, only a few seconds remained before the battle.
– Kronos, you will lead everyone! Looking at the demon, Lacrosse said.
– But, I have no experience in fighting. Kronos answered anxiously.
– Silence! I’m not going to tolerate disobedience.
The horn sounded, and Kronos and other demons set out to meet their fate. Everyone was walking in an even formation, and he was in front. General Lacrosse, for some unknown reason, did not take part in the battle, although usually the commanders of the troops fight on an equal footing with everyone.
The angels decided to break their formation and those in front of them randomly got mixed up, breaking the order, giving an excellent chance for an attack.
– Forward, brothers! Let’s destroy our enemies! Loudly, that there is strength, shouted Kronos.
The battle has begun. The symbols on the weapons of the demons were sanctified, and the blood of the defeated enemies sprinkled them. After spilling his first enemy blood, he immediately went into a rage and shouted loudly: “Lo’mar! This kindled excitement, and every demon repeated this word after the kill, it was impossible not to participate. In each blow, Kronos put the strength of the sword and part of the energy of the seal – creating an inevitable defeat for the enemy. Dozens of demons fell under the onslaught of angels, but the demons still defeated the enemy army. Finally raging, the demon asked the brothers to retreat, deciding to personally destroy the angels who were left alive. He was eager to try out the sword spell, all he needed was to use the power of the seal to cast and a couple of seconds of time.
– Loxus. – Having said the spell, he released the power of the seal and began to enjoy the spectacle of destruction. From the sky, with great speed, burning meteors began to fall, sweeping away everything in their path.
The ground shook from the blows, and the enemies inevitably died. The first time he failed to open the meteors and create fire warriors with the help of energy, it turned out to be much more difficult than expected. However, this was more than enough to win. After all the enemies were defeated, Kronos broke the spell and stopped feeding it with his seal. Everything around was in ulcers boiling from meteors, and the blood of angels filled the earth cracked from dryness. The enthusiastic cries of the brothers sounded from everywhere, testifying to the victory. But this was not the end of the battle. The angel general, who, like Lacrosse, did not take part in the battle, had a choice – either immediately die at the hands of the demon general, or fight for his life and, in case of victory, disappear away from the battlefield.
– You, come closer so I can see the light fade from your eyes. General Lacrosse called out to the angel.
– I’m not going to fight Lacrosse with you, I challenge him! The angel pointed to Kronos. He was adamant in his decision to fight the young demon. – If a challenge was thrown, you are obliged to accept it, and no one dares to interfere with you!
Kronos knew that Lacrosse didn’t care about honor or tradition. He only wanted to take away the angel seal energy to become even stronger. His strength often intoxicated him, and under the onslaught of his own pride, he did terrible things.
Approaching a place convenient for attacking, the angel shouted to me:
– If I get your head, I will be richly rewarded, because you have great power hidden in you, and you can turn the tide of events. I cannot allow this. Your father has killed enough of my warriors, it’s time for you to answer for his sins!
The demon lost a lot of energy to the spell to fight him, but there was no way out.
Generals can have unimaginable strength, and Kronos had no idea how to fight him. He understood that it was pointless to wait for help from Lacrosse – he himself would contribute to his death with great joy, just to get the power of the seals. Gathering all his will, the demon prepared for battle. The belief that the power given by his father would help him survive slightly encouraged him.
– I think you want to know the name of the one who will make your heart stop. My name is Astar. I promise I will punish more than one generation like you.
– I accept your challenge Astar. So easy, I won’t give up.
Hearing that Kronos answered the angel’s call, Lacrosse shouted out in rage:
– You dare to contradict me? If you survive, I swear I will destroy you myself! I won’t let a nonentity like you get in my way.
His words literally opened a second wind in the demon, and a new influx of energy gushed out of the seal. Hatred flared up in him, and Kronos wanted only one thing – to drink the blood of all enemies.
The demon came closer to the Angel in order to start the duel. Astar was absolutely relaxed and could strike at any moment, while the demon was extremely tense and could not even stand in one place.
– Why are you so tense, relax. Dying is easier than living.
– I’m sure I won’t die. Not here, and certainly not now.
Astar unexpectedly struck Kronos. Reflexively reacting to it, he launched a counterattack. A blow, another blow, a turn and a blow. Their swords clashed in a beautiful dance of death, and the sharp sounds of the contact of the blades rang in silence. For Kronos, this was a rather difficult fight, because he had never fought such a serious opponent before, and this made the desire to win only stronger. The demon felt that it was starting to weaken, after the battle with a detachment of angels, and its blows noticeably lost their power.
– What is a demon? Are you ready to give up?
– Never!
After another heavy series of blows, Kronos doubled over.
At that very moment, Astar struck backhand, and without calculating his strength, he lost his balance. The demon put his sword forward, expecting that he would at least partially inflict damage on the angel, but he flew right on the edge of the sword. Blood immediately rushed to the ground from the pierced opponent. It was noticeable how in his eyes the light began to fade. Kronos had only to connect his seal with the seal of the angel and completely absorb his strength in order to restore his energy supply.
– Do you understand that in a fair fight, the outcome would have been different? I gave in because a member of the council ordered it. He said that my death will not be in vain and will affect the course of events, and you are just a pawn in a chess game that never ends. There will be no winners and losers here, but only endless pain that will poison your heart…forever. – Intermittent whisper uttered Astar.
– Perhaps your words make sense, but as long as I live, I firmly believe that I will become a great warrior.
