The central piece of lacrosse equipment for a lacrosse player is the stick. It is what players use to catch, pass, and throw the ball. It is impossible to play the sport without it.

The purpose and structure of the lacrosse stick have not changed much. It is made up of two parts: the shaft and, of course, the headpiece, which will be the focus of this content.

In the past, the headpiece was constructed from wood and leather. Nowadays, their design is modern and streamlined, and the material from which they are made has been revolutionized. It is now made of a variety of substances. Most products are manufactured from materials like plastic and carbon.

Lacrosse stick heads are typically shaped like a scoop. The shape allows you to catch, scoop, stop and throw the ball.

1. When Do You Need to Buy a Lacrosse Headpiece?

While you enjoy the thrill of the game, your gear takes a beating. It will be bumped, scraped, strained, and exposed to all kinds of weather conditions. And no matter how sturdy it is, you can’t expect it to last forever.

Eventually, your headpiece might start to show cracks or even break. It may also start to show discoloration. If you see any of these signs, then it is time to invest in a new headpiece.

However, it is also best to remember that a beginner stick might probably not be able to take the strain required of an experienced player’s equipment.

2. Lacrosse Head Rules

If you are playing at the high school level, you will need to go a lacrosse head that conforms to the rules defined by NFHS.

As per these rules, the minimum width of the head should be no less than 6.5 inches and the maximum width no more than 10 inches at the widest part of the head. Typically, heads which conform to these rules are known as NFHS heads.

If you are playing at the college level, you must get a lacrosse head that conforms with the rules laid down by NCAA. The lacrosse heads which meet these rules are known as NCAA heads. These heads are legal for use in college-level games but are not allowed in youth or high school games.

Finally, a special legal variety of lacrosse heads known as ‘universal heads’ are also available in the market. These heads conform to the NCAA as well as NFHS rules and are allowed for use on all level. These include youth, college level and high school level games.

Finding a head which is legal according to the rules of your respective level is important.

If you carry a head which is not legal according to the rules, you may be barred from playing in the game. Alternatively, if an illegal head is discovered during the game, you and your team may be penalized for it.

3. Types of Lacrosse Heads

Manufacturers often make sticks for different roles like a goalie, defender, midfielder, and an attacker. This is because the dimensions and contour of the head can affect the way a player handles the ball.

Goalie

Defender

Defenders need to use their sticks to handle ground balls and checks. They need a sturdy stick that can survive this type of pressure.

Face-off Midfielder

Narrow pocket also enables a more accurate shooting, allowing the attacker to make accurate passes and shots.

Most attack heads also feature a slight curve along their throat where they meet the shaft. This curve enables an attacking player to channel more power into his shot and achieve better accuracy when shooting the ball.

Beginner

If you are a beginner at the lacrosse game, the best option for you is to go with a lacrosse head that comes pre-attached with a shaft. In other words, a complete stick is your best bet. Such sticks typically feature lacrosse heads which are specifically designer for the beginners.

A beginner lacrosse head typically features a wide enough face which allows you to catch the ball relatively easy in the beginning. It is also preferable if you go with a lacrosse head that is made from a softer mesh and is not too stiff.

This will ensure that when you catch the ball, it will not simply bounce off the head. So you will be able to gradually develop ball control.

Lacrosse heads for beginners also tend to have a flatter scoop which allows the player to easily get the ball off the ground.

Stringing

Some holes run along the side of the scoop through which you can thread the string or mesh. Unfortunately, most lacrosse heads that you can buy come without any mesh. You will probably need to string it yourself.

You can choose between different types of netting. It is much easier to install mesh than string. Most stringing kits will come with instructions on how to do this.

3. Colors

Lacrosse Head Stringing Guide

Stringing a lacrosse head is quite easy if you follow the guidelines. Usually, you will be able to manage an awesome 10-diamond mesh on your own and this will serve you well in the game.

• Step 1: Fold the row of diamonds into two rows so that you clearly see only 10 diamonds on the top.
• Step 2: Pass the string through the 1st diamond and pull it back over the sidewall rail of the head.
• Step 3: Put the string through the second sidewall hole and in this way, secure the 1st diamond of the head tightly to the 1st and 2nd sidewall holes of the head.
• Step 4: Push the string through the 2nd diamond and pass it through the 1st scoop hole on the head.
• Step 5: After passing the string through the scoop hole, pull it back and secure it tightly.
• Step 6: Tie the 3rd hole to the 1st scoop hole in a similar way and then push the string through the 4th diamond and then through the 2nd scoop hole. Secure the string tightly.
• Step 7: Pass the string through the 5th diamond and then push it up through the 2nd scoop hole.
• Step 8: Push the string through the 6th diamond and then push it under and up through the 3rd scoop hole. Pull the end back away from the scoop and tie it under itself.
• Step 9: Pass the string through the 7th diamond and the 3rd large scoop hole and tie it in a similar manner.
• Step 10: Follow the same routine with the 8th mesh diamond and the 4th large scoop hole. Do the same with the 9th mesh diamond and the 4th scoop hole. Finally, peg the 10th mesh diamond to both sidewall holes on either side of the head and then pull the string back over the rail. Pull as tight as possible and finally tie it in a secure 8-shaped knot.

What to Look for in a Lacrosse Head for Attack

With so many lacrosse heads designed for attackmen, it can be hard to decide which is right for you. To help you decide, I’ve put together a list of some of the most important things to consider when choosing.

1) Face Shape

Most attackmen like heads with a narrow face shape, especially around the bottom half of the head. A tight pinch helps keep the ball in your stick better which is very important for someone who typically carries the ball a lot.

There are some exceptions. If you are a crease attackman, for example, you may prefer a wider head to help you catch passes easier. Newer players may also prefer wider heads until they are more confident in their catching.

2) Weight

Weight is probably the next most important thing to consider. Lighter heads are easier to handle and can help you shoot faster since you can move your stick faster. 

I consider any offensive heads under 5 oz to be light, with extremely light heads checking in at under 4.6 oz.

3) Stiffness & Durability

While stiffness doesn’t matter as much for attack heads as they do for defensive heads, it is still worth considering. You don’t want a head that is going to bend to the side every time you go down to scoop a ball. Stiff heads also hold their shape better when getting checked, helping them stay consistent when passing and shooting.

In addition, it’s not enough to just feel how stiff a brand new head is. You should read reviews to see how sticks hold up over time. Less durable heads may feel stiff when they are new but may become flimsy in heat or break easily after some use. 

3) Pocket Placement

You should look for a head that is optimized for your ideal pocket placement. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the side profile of the head to see where the max offset (the part where the bottom rail is the lowest) is. 

Most attackmen prefer a low pocket to help with one-handed cradling. In this scenario, you should look for a head where the max offset is towards the throat. 

If you prefer more whip, on the other hand, you may choose to go with a head that’s ideal for mid pockets.

4) Scoop

Making sure you like the way the scoop feels is important for any type of lacrosse head. Having a good scoop allows you to be confident in picking up ground balls at a variety of angles.

Scoops that area more angled/curved (when looking down your stick) allow you to pick up balls at a higher angle in relation to the ground, whereas flat scoops force you to bend over a lot which may slow you down.

5) Stringing Holes

Unlike when I played in high school, most heads nowadays come with many stringing holes, giving you plenty of options for stringing your stick. There is still some fluctuation from head-to-head, however. 

Before choosing a stick, check out the number and size of the sidewall holes to make sure they look like they will work with your preferred stringing pattern.

6) Strung vs. Unstrung

The last thing to consider is whether to buy a strung or unstrung head. A few years ago, I would have told you to always go with an unstrung head and either string it yourself or find someone that knows how to do it for you.

More recently, however, a lot of companies such as ECD and StringKing have started offering much better string jobs on their strung heads, making them viable options.

If you decide to go with a strung head, do some research to see if customers typically like the string job and if it meets your preferences. Avoid factory-strung pockets—which are typically very shallow—at all costs.

Top Lacrosse Heads: See What the LAS Team Ranks as the Top Men’s Lacrosse Heads of All-Time

It would be safe to say that lacrosse heads have changed a little bit over the years.

Need we say more? From the beginning of wooden sticks to the development of the plastic head and beyond, lacrosse has seen some changes to the game and especially the equipment. We at LaxAllStars have put our ‘heads’ together and have come up with our top-10 list of all-time greatest heads.

For simplicity sake, we are narrowing down this list to lacrosse heads in the post-wooden era. We are going completely plastic.

Monumental lacrosse heads on this list include one of the first plastic heads ever created, the PL77. That head hearkens back all the way to the 1970’s. The Laser Hi-Wall also makes an appearance on the list. For the FOGO’s out there, the Warrior Blade made our cut as well, due to the fact that was the head of choice for so many faceoff men for so long.

The classic offset heads in the Brine Edge and STX Proton were used by the majority of college players for quite some time. Staying on the topic of Brine heads, the Magic series including the MD, MX and M1 greatly contributed to mainstreaming the idea of position-centric heads and designing heads for particular pockets.

Why it’s on our list:  This was the original head to use offset technology, effectively revolutionizing how plastic heads would work for years to come. Bill Brine, whose family founded what is now the company called after his last name, had seen Gary and Paul Gait using slightly-bent lacrosse shafts and an idea was born. STX Laser Hi-Wall

Why it’s on our list: A classic, non-offset head. Time for a few fun facts about this head. Originally, it had a ‘doweled’ shaft insertion area, meaning it could only screw into circular shafts. None of the octagonal shafts would work. The Laser Hi-Wall eventually morphed into just the Hi-Wall, which allowed for the use of octagonal shafts. It was popular for a large part of the 1980s, and some collegiate players even used it into the 1990s, according to LaxAllStars.

Why it’s on our list: We’ve got to give the goalies some love on this list. The STX Eclipse was what I believe to be the first plastic offset goalie head to be released. As a user of this head during my playing days, I can attest to the fact that it was incredibly light for the time and helped make outlet passes easier. It seemed it was always competing with the Warrior Nemesis, but when push came to shove, the Eclipse was my head of choice. Fitting for the best-selling goalie head ever made, according to Lax.com.

Players can wear a long cross (also called d-pole ) in lengths ranging from 52 to 72 inches. These long crosses are commonly used by defenders and midfielders. For players, the head of the cross must be 6.5 inches at its widest point and the neck of the cross must be at least 3 inches wide.

The goalkeeper must use a cross that is 42 to 72 inches long and the head can be 12 inches longer than other players, mainly to catch and / or defend the ball.

Lacrosse Sticks and Sticks Heads

The head is strung on nylon or leather laces to form a pocket. Club dimensions (length, width, sidewall height and pocket depth) are governed by league rules such as the NCAA rules for varsity players or the FIL rules for international players.
