Names
Each francophone region has its own vocabulary: “lacrosse” is the term used in France, in francophone Switzerland the term “hockey stick” is preferred. In francophone Canada, we speak of either “hockey stick” or simply “stick” or “hockey” because the term lacrosse refers to equipment used in another team sport, lacrosse, especially popular in North America.
Historic
It’s not uncommon these days to see sticks made of graphite, others made of carbon fibre, plastic or even titanium. But originally a hockey stick was made from a single piece of wood. In XVII – th centuries, the Indians played with curved sticks carved in wood with a bullet in a game similar to curling on grass. In 1855, hockey was born in Kingston, Ontario, introduced by British soldiers. During this period, the players themselves made clubs from white beech. Industrialization of the production of cigarette butts only dates from the beginning of XX – . Jacob Hespeler, an Ontario entrepreneur, set up several sawmills to mass-produce hockey sticks. At that time, shares were traded for 45¢ a dozen, today the share price is worth between $20 and $350 every .
In 2015, the Canadian Museum purchased the world’s oldest lacrosse from the 1830s for $300,000.
Manufacturing process
Today, in mass production, a hockey stick is produced in several stages. The handle is made from a piece of aspen, onto which two very thin birch blades are glued under pressure. Then the handle is sawn into three identical parts, each of which can be used to make a stock.
The three handles are first sandblasted and then reinforced with fiberglass and carbon fiber.
The sleeves are then placed in a mold for firing at 80 °C under pressure.
The seventh step is to detail the handles one by one with a milling machine that rounds the corners and then irons on a sander to remove the roughness of the wood.
A pallet block is glued to the end of the handle. The adhesive used must be waterproof.
The angle of the tray is very important. Various possible angles are defined by the standard. The possible angles are numbered from 1 to 6. The higher the number, the greater the angle between the shoulder blade and the end of the stock.
The next steps are to refine the palette. First of all, the entire stock is sandblasted again to remove the last roughness. The workpiece then passes through the CNC, which forms the pallet in accordance with the selected model.
There are over 6000 pallet models. The curvature is obtained after passing through the steam engine, which makes it ductile.
The pallet is then reinforced with fiberglass and epoxy resin. After drying for 24 hours at 32 °C and finishing with a rotary sandblaster, the workpiece is again immersed in the epoxy resin bath.
The last step is to apply the manufacturer’s mark on the handle by screen printing.
On average, 40,000 hockey sticks are produced every week.

When I was nine years old, I read Enid’s books avidly Blyton. So it was with my generation, with the generation before me, and so it continues to this day.
Parents are accustomed to choosing books for their children, but Enid Blyton wrote in such a way that the children themselves made the right choice. She understood the child’s soul very well, and even the most humble child wanted to be like a girl named Elizabeth Allen. I confess that I was on the side of this mischievous little heroine with all my heart when she rebelled against her parents, school principals, her peers, or when she set the heat at school meetings. You know, if I were in her place, I would have done something else!
Of all the episodes of Enid Blyton, I liked “Bad Girl” the most. Maybe thanks to the mythical Whiteleaf School. In Whiteleaf, everything is not arranged as usual. There, of course, there is a director and teachers, but the children themselves manage everything in the school. For example, they collect money in a common piggy bank and, so that no one is offended, they divide it equally among everyone every week. Living and studying in Whiteleaf is so interesting that you are ready to skip there. Moreover, there you can meet an obnoxious girl.
I hope that you, like me once, will be carried away by this series and you will also read Enid Blyton’s books.
Chapter 1
Return to Whiteleaf
Elizabeth Allen and her mother were busy packing. Summer vacation has come to an end, tomorrow Elizabeth returns to school! The bad girl did not hide her joy.
– Oh, Mommy, I wish tomorrow would come soon! I so want to see all my friends! Elizabeth chirped happily. I have never been away from home in autumn and winter.
Mrs. Allen laughed as she latched her suitcase.
– Do you remember how much noise there was last time? You did not listen to anyone and constantly played pranks. And now you are unrecognizable.
– Yes, I behaved stupidly. Elizabeth frowned as she remembered her behavior. – That’s a shame. And I didn’t share sweets with anyone, and disrupted classes, didn’t go to bed on time and did everything out of spite so that they kicked me out.
“But then you changed your mind and decided to stay,” smiled Mrs. Allen. “I hope you won’t be so mischievous this quarter.”
“No, no,” Elizabeth shook her head. – True, the ideal student is unlikely to come out of me. I’m so quick-tempered: first I blurt out something, and then I regret it. From this all the trouble. But I will try my best, I promise.
“That’s a good girl,” Mom smiled. Yes, the suitcase is packed. In the carton you have toffees, cookies, chocolate cake and a jar of blackcurrant jam. No longer fits. Is that enough for you?
– Of course, mommy! We share with each other. I hope that Joanina’s mother will provide her with a supply of sweets this quarter.
Joan was Elizabeth’s best friend. She spent most of the summer with the Allens, and it was a happy time for both girls. Joan returned home two weeks ago to be with her family. Elizabeth was eager to see her friend and do everything together.
During the holidays, Elizabeth kept buzzing her mother’s ears about Whiteleaf. It was a school where boys and girls studied together and made the rules without the participation of directors and teachers. The main event of each week was the school meeting, led by two judges elected by the whole school, a boy and a girl, and twelve prefects. They considered all applications and complaints and made a general decision, only occasionally resorting to the help of adults.
Elisabeth’s pranks made her very hard at meetings. But then she realized that her behavior reflects badly not only on herself, but on the whole school. Therefore, she was looking forward to the start of the new quarter in order to show her best side.
So things are packed. Two clubs were added to them – for lacrosse and hockey. Elizabeth had not yet mastered these sports, but was already going to become a champion. Oh, how fast she will run and score goals!
The next day, her mother took Elizabeth to London to put her on a train to the village of Whiteleaf, where the school was located. Elizabeth danced on the platform, not holding back her joy at the sight of her friends.
– Joan! You’re already here! How are you, Mrs Townsend? I’m very glad to see you.
“And I’m glad, Elizabeth,” smiled Mrs. Townsend. How are you, Mrs Allen? The obnoxious girl is eager to repeat her pranks? she added playfully.
“Well, that’s in the past,” Elisabeth was embarrassed. – Now I’m very tolerable … Oh, there’s Nora! Nora, Nora, come to us!
– Hello! Nora waved to Elizabeth and walked over to their company. – Have you decided to go back to school? We’ll have to come up with new rules for this occasion.
Mrs. Townsend laughed:
– Be patient, my dear. The bad girl nickname is easy to stick to, but it’s not so easy to get rid of it.
– Look! Harry! Joan suddenly screamed. – Harry! Can you imagine, the rabbits you gave me are already so big! And they have bunnies! I took two with me to look after them.
“Good,” Harry smiled. He was also happy to see everyone. – Hello, Elizabeth! How hot are you! Hey John, Elizabeth is here! You had big plans for this quarter.
A tall, strong boy, John Terry, approached the company. Gardening was his favorite pastime. With the light hand of the head teacher, Mr. Jones, he became responsible for the garden, and in the last quarter, Elizabeth joined him.
“Hi, Elizabeth,” John said. Have you forgotten your gardening book?
– Of course not. And I’ve gone through it twice already.
– Excellent. When we arrive, the first thing will be to rake up the leaves and branches, burn them, and then dig up the ground.
For a couple of minutes, Elizabeth and John dropped out of the general conversation, discussing future work. Another student approached the children. He was older than the others, dark-haired and very serious. He quietly took Elizabeth’s arm.
– Oh Richard! The girl exclaimed turning around. – You’re a bastard! He promised to write and forgot about me. Probably spent the whole summer at the piano.
Richard smiled shyly. He really did a lot of piano and violin work, preparing himself for a professional career as a musician. She and Elizabeth got along well last quarter and even played a duet at the holiday concert. They were called twice for an encore!
“I spent the whole summer with my grandfather,” he said. He has an old violin and he let me play it. I really didn’t think about anything but music. By the way, thanks for the postcard. Even though your handwriting is terrible and I couldn’t make out anything other than your name, thanks anyway.
“You know…” Elizabeth began, but Richard smiled so slyly that she realized it was a joke and laughed. – Richard, let’s also play a duet this quarter!
Miss Ranger, their homeroom teacher, approached the children. She was strict but very sweet.
– Hello, dear children and parents. The train is leaving soon, so it’s time to say goodbye.
Giving the company a kind smile, Miss Ranger went to warn the others.
– Do you remember when Miss Ranger kicked you out of class when you shot me with an eraser? Joan giggled as she climbed into the car.
Laughing, Elizabeth turned to her mother:
– Mommy, dear, goodbye! Don’t worry, I’ll be good this quarter.
The whistle of the locomotive was heard. The guys said goodbye to their relatives and fled to the cars. The train started moving, and only mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and other relatives remained on the platform, waving after the departing train.
London was soon left behind.
“Hurrah, we’re going to school!” – did not cease to rejoice Elizabeth. She looked back. Everyone was around: Joan, Belinda, Nora, Harry and the rest. John took out a bag of sweets and passed them around. Chewing sweets, the guys shared summer stories and discussed plans for this quarter.
– I wonder if we’ll have new ones? Joan asked. – I didn’t notice anyone.
“There are new ones,” John replied. – One boy and two girls, they ride in the tail car. Girls your age, and a boy will most likely get into our class. He’s kind of grumpy.
– What kind of girls? Elizabeth asked.
– I did not have time to examine them.
– All right. We will get to know them soon. Joan reached for the next candy. – Elizabeth, what did you take from the delicious? My mother gave me a large box of chocolates, gingerbread cookies, a jar of cane syrup, and a jam sandwich.
– Wow, so many! Elizabeth rejoiced.
Everyone was so busy listing the gifts that no one noticed the train pull up to the Whiteleaf platform. It was a small suburban station nestled comfortably among the hills. The children poured out of the wagons and boarded the school buses.
– We will see the school soon! Elizabeth stuck to the window. As the bus began to climb the hill, she yelled, “Look!
The boys jumped up from their seats to admire their favorite Whiteleaf. The loach, entwining the walls of the building, had already begun to blush. The bright autumn sun reflected in the windows. An amazing sight.
The buses passed through the arch and stopped at the main entrance. Five months ago, at the beginning of the spring term, Elizabeth hated this place. But now, who would have thought, she cheerfully jumped out of the bus and, together with everyone, rushed to the school doors.
Then Elizabeth saw the new ones. They clustered on the sidelines, not knowing what to do next.
– Let’s go help. Elizabeth pulled Joan along with her. – Look, what confused sparrows.
The girls approached the boys. They were eleven or twelve years old, and the tall boy was clearly older.
– Hello! We’ll show you where the dining room is and where you can wash up,” Elizabeth said.
The guys nodded. At that moment, Rita, the head of the school, approached.
– Oh Elizabeth, Joan! Already taking care of new ones? Well done. And I just came for them. – Rita was pleased that the girls took the initiative.
“This is Rita, our chairman and judge of the school assembly,” Elizabeth introduced her. “And over there is William, the second chairman. They are wonderful. Come on, I’ll show you where the dressing room is.
The guys cleaned themselves up from the road and went to the canteen. They are hungry like wolves. Catching the aroma of roasted carrots and onions and seeing familiar faces, Elizabeth smiled again.
– How glad I am to be here again. I wonder what adventures await us this time?
“Maybe not,” Joan replied.
Well, that’s unlikely.
Chapter 2
So far everything is calm
The children quickly integrated into school life. Becoming high school students, they were a little arrogant at first, but it quickly passed. The new boy and both girls are in Elizabeth’s class. Their names were Jennifer Harris, Kathleen Peters, Robert Jones.
Jenny was a cheerful girl with short hair and thick bangs. She had such a sparkling look that there was no doubt: Jenny would become the soul of the company.
Kathleen Peters was a pale, pimply creature with greasy hair. She always walked dissatisfied, so no one could communicate with her for a long time.
If Robert Jones smiled more often, he would be a nice fellow, but he walked introverted and gloomy.
“I don’t like him,” said Joan Elizabeth. “It’s like he’s up to something bad.” Watch how he tightens his thin mouth.
– It’s not his fault. Elizabeth spread her hands.
– And I think that any person is able to work on his facial expression.
“But poor Kathleen Peters is definitely out of it,” Elizabeth laughed.
“Shh, she might hear,” Joan hissed at her.
The first week went on as usual. Everyone was given new writing utensils and each was assigned a place in the classroom. To Joan and Elizabeth’s delight, they were seated side by side near a window overlooking the garden. In the sunniest part of it, personal beds were allocated for those who wished. On one grew lettuce, on the other – flowers, on the third – six luxurious rose bushes. Elizabeth did not have her own plot, as she wanted to join John in charge of the entire garden. In the summer, the girl studied a book on gardening, and now she was full of ideas.
Children were also allowed to keep pets, but only those that were adapted to life inside. Therefore, cats and dogs were excluded, but there were rabbits, guinea pigs, several fan-tailed pigeons in a special house on a pole, two canaries and many aquariums with fish. All this living creature lived in a large barn next to the stable. They also kept school chickens and ducks, which the children took care of with pleasure.
There was also a barn with three cows the color of milk chocolate. Every morning, two students got up at dawn and went to milking.
Jennifer Harris brought white mice with her. They lived in a large cage, which she cleaned every day. Nobody at school had mice yet, so when Jenny called Elizabeth and Joan to look at them after school, they readily agreed.
“Look how sweet they are,” Jennifer said while one mouse ran over her arm. They have such pink eyes. Elizabeth, put a mouse on you? Let him run.
– I don’t want something. Elizabeth moved away from the cage.
– Hello everyone! So those are your mice, Jennifer? Harry entered the barn. – They’re so pretty! Oh, one perched on your collar!
– Yeah. You can take it. They love to run up the arm and climb up the scruff of the neck.
Harry carefully took the mouse. She ran up his sleeve and nestled behind his collar, wiggling her mustache.
Joan winced.
– Oh no, that’s definitely not for me.
When the dinner bell rang, the mice were returned to their cage, and Elizabeth and Joan came over to pet the rabbits again. They were brought by Joan, but they decided to take care of them together. The rabbits were plump and obviously content with life.
The first week everyone looked forward to afternoon tea and dinner because the cartons were full of homemade goodies. Pies, sandwiches, sweets, chocolates, canned meat, jams were laid out on the table – and the feast began!
Elizabeth noticed that Robert kept to himself and didn’t eat much. Kathleen shared only canned ham, and did not give sweets to anyone. Elizabeth wanted to be indignant, but, remembering her own behavior in the last quarter, she restrained herself.
“I myself was like that, and I have no right to condemn anyone,” she thought. “What a blessing that I am no longer a greedy person. ”
The biggest event of each week was the school assembly on Fridays. All the students were present, Headmistresses Miss Bell, Miss Best, and Vice Principal Mr. Jones. Other teachers could also come if desired, but in any case, the adults sat in the very back rows and did not interfere in the course of the meeting. It was a kind of children’s parliament, which approved its own rules and laws, listened to complaints and suggestions, and determined punishments for those who deserved it.
You say: who likes being sanded in public? But if you hide, the problem grows like a snowball. Therefore, the meeting taught the children to be honest. Anyone who cheated, lied or misbehaved, sooner or later changed for the better, and the whole school helped him in this.
The meeting was held in the sports hall, where a large round table was set up for twelve members of the jury. Rita and William have been judges for quite some time now. But the members of the jury (or elders), if necessary, were chosen every month.
When the judges entered the hall, everyone, even adults, stood up, as is customary in a real court. Only after the judges had taken their places could those present sit down.
And here is the first meeting of the new quarter. William rapped on the table with the judge’s gavel, calling for silence.
“Today’s meeting will be short,” he began. – I hope the newcomers have already been explained the importance of this event. Remember your elders. Does everyone understand why they became elders? Because they are prudent, reliable and kind. You must listen to them and follow the established rules.
Then Rita took the floor.
– Did everyone bring money? I repeat for the new ones. Everyone has to deposit money into the general treasury, from which you receive two pounds once a week. On them you can buy everything you need: stamps, sweets, hairpins, shoelaces and so on. If you need more money, you can ask for it, but the meeting always has the final say. Nora, please pass the box through the rows.
Everyone unconditionally hoarded money, and only Robert began to resent:
– How so? Grandpa gave me ten pounds. It turns out, bye-bye my money?
“Robert, some have little money, some have a lot, but here we are all on an equal footing,” William explained patiently. Every week everyone turns in money, but they always get two pounds. If you need to spend money on something important, turn to the meeting. This rule is not up for debate.
After thinking for a couple of seconds, Robert still put the money in the box, but he sat dissatisfied.
– Up your nose! Elizabeth whispered to him, sitting behind him, but he gave her an icy look.
Nora took a box full of coins and distributed two pounds to everyone, including judges and jury members.
– Does anyone need extra money for the next week? William asked.
A boy named Kenneth got up.
– May I have sixpence? – he asked. I lost my library book and I have to pay a fine.
“Pay with your own money,” William replied, and all the elders nodded. This is your oversight and inattention. If you find the book, the money will be returned to you. Who else?
One of the girls, Mary, raised her hand.
– My mother is abroad and I write to her every week, but the postage stamp costs a whopping sevenpence. Can I get money for stamps?
The judges murmured and decided that five pence could be added to two pounds every week.
– You will spend two pence as for a regular stamp, and the school will pay the rest. We decided that it would be right, – said Rita, passing coins to the girl.
– Yes, of course. Thanks a lot!
– So, apparently, that’s it. Rita looked at her notes. – I remind you that at every meeting you need to report cases of bad behavior, disobedience, cheating or cruelty. Everything needs undeniable facts or witnesses, otherwise your statement will be considered false. Newcomers, your warden Nora will tell you more about the rules.
– Any more questions? William asked again.
Since everyone was silent, William declared the meeting closed and the hall quickly emptied. Joan and Elizabeth returned to the barn to feed the rabbits. Elizabeth was unusually silent. She was still worried about her previous “exploits”. What fly bit her then? Sighing, the girl gently took the rabbit in her arms, and he immediately dozed off.
“So far so good,” Joan said. “I hope Whiteleaf is free of storms and troubles.

Chapter 3
Elizabeth has an enemy
As rightly said, first impressions are always right. Robert Jones really turned out to be unfriendly and hostile, and Kathleen Peters was sullen and touchy. All the guys barely restrained themselves so as not to quarrel with them.
On the other hand, the laughter-loving Jennifer Harris was very good at imitating. She was especially good at Mademoiselle, the French teacher: in moments of excitement, she behaved like a dramatic actress, waving her arms funny. The guys laughed to hiccups when Jennifer parodied her.
“Jenny is adorable,” Elizabeth said to Joan. “But I can’t stand Robert and Kathleen. Robert seems cruel to me.
– Why is that? Did he offend you?
– No, not me. But yesterday, on my way to class, I heard someone squeal in pain, and then Janet rushed past. I asked what was the matter, but she remained silent. And then I saw Robert. He must have pinched her or pushed her.
“Quite possibly,” Joan agreed thoughtfully.
Belinda Green overheard the girls’ conversation.
– Yes, he is a notorious bully! – she said and told how Robert chases the younger ones and pinches them painfully.
– What a bastard! – Elizabeth was indignant, not tolerating injustice. – He’ll get it from me. I will report on his behavior at the meeting.
“Strong evidence is needed,” Belinda said. “Otherwise, everyone will decide what you are inventing.
As luck would have it, at that moment Robert was passing by, and the girls abruptly fell silent. Robert allegedly accidentally pushed Elizabeth and she nearly hit the wall.
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t notice you,” Robert grinned and walked on.
Elizabeth was furious. She rushed after him, but Joan pulled her back.
“He provokes you,” she said. – Don’t give in.
“No promises,” Elizabeth growled. – Well, rude!
It was time to go back to class. Taking her seat, Elizabeth continued to glare at Robert. He made an indifferent look, but from that moment their confrontation began.
When Miss Ranger announced that Robert had done almost all the tasks wrong, Elizabeth smiled wickedly.
“That’s right,” she whispered, but Miss Ranger overheard.
“It’s not good to rejoice in other people’s mistakes,” she remarked coldly. This time, Robert did not hide his pleased smile.
Now everyone was just waiting for the other to make a mistake. Robert, although he was taller and larger than his classmates, was not very smart and made a lot of mistakes in the lessons.
At sports, Elizabeth and Robert often found themselves in different teams, where they could compete openly. Robert strove to hit her stick in lacrosse or knock her down in hockey. Elizabeth, though not mean, now tried to push him harder at every opportunity.
Mr. Warlow noticed this and even called them in to talk.
“You are not on the battlefield,” he said sternly. – Leave your dislike and play fair.
Elizabeth felt ashamed and stopped attacking Robert, but he still continued to harass her on the sly.
“Elizabeth, it is useless to measure strength with him,” Nora once said. – And so everything is clear. Better stay away from him. God forbid, you will lose your temper and get into trouble. He’s just waiting for this.
“I’m not afraid of him,” Elizabeth replied arrogantly.
“That’s not the point,” Nora sighed. “He provokes you, but if you ignore him, he will fall behind.
– He’s a vile bully!
– Where is the evidence? Nora objected. – If there are, contact the assembly. Only there can punishment be given, and you know it very well.
Elizabeth pouted. Why doesn’t Nora believe her? Well, yes, she is not in her class and does not know how Robert behaves in the classroom.
The next evening after lunch, Elizabeth went to play with the rabbits when she heard someone scream:
– Oh, stop it! Please stop!
Elizabeth turned the corner and saw Robert swinging nine-year-old Peter on a swing.
– I’m sick! Peter shouted. Stop it, Robert! Stop it!
But Robert swung the swing so hard that they almost made the “sunshine”. Elizabeth’s eyes darkened with anger, and she ran to Robert.
– Enough! she yelled. – What are you doing? He’s bad!
“None of your business,” Robert said without even looking at her. “He asked for it himself, so there’s nothing to complain about. Get out of here, don’t go where you’re not invited.
– Oh, yes! the girl exclaimed. She tried to stop the swing, but Robert pushed her back and pushed her into the bushes. And then he continued to rock the unfortunate Peter.
– I’ll tell everyone! – rising, shouted Elizabeth.
“No one will believe you,” Robert laughed.
And then Elizabeth lost her head. She attacked the bully, grabbed his hair and tore out a whole tuft. Then she slapped Robert in the face and pushed him in the stomach so hard that he doubled over with a groan.
While Robert was recovering, Elizabeth stopped the swing and helped Peter off. The boy was shaking with fear.
“Go sit on the grass,” she advised. “And don’t ask this bully for anything else.”
Peter left, staggering and holding his stomach.
Elizabeth was shaking all over with anger. She turned to Robert. Several guys were already standing nearby, but no one wanted to interfere in the quarrel.
– I’ll report you! Here you go, thug! Elizabeth yelled angrily and ran away.
Robert feigned a sigh and turned to the guys.
– What a girl! he said, rising from the ground. Look, she ripped my hair out.
No one saw how it all started, but it didn’t look like Elizabeth was the first to get into a fight.
