What is the Stony Brook men’s lacrosse schedule for 2023. How does the team’s move to the CAA impact their upcoming season. What key matchups should fans look forward to in the new conference.
Stony Brook Seawolves: A New Chapter in the CAA
The Stony Brook Seawolves men’s lacrosse team is gearing up for an exciting 2023 season, marking their debut in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Coming off a solid 2022 campaign with a 9-5 overall record and a 4-2 performance in America East play, the Seawolves are poised to make their mark in their new conference.
The transition to the CAA brings fresh challenges and opportunities for the Stony Brook lacrosse program. With a mix of familiar foes and new opponents, the 2023 schedule promises to test the Seawolves’ mettle and showcase their potential on a different stage.
Breaking Down the 2023 Schedule
The Seawolves’ 2023 slate features a well-balanced 14-game schedule, evenly split between home and away contests. This arrangement provides ample opportunities for fans to support the team at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium while also allowing the squad to prove themselves on the road.
Key Dates and Matchups
- Season Opener: February 11 at Rutgers
- Home Opener: February 24 vs. Air Force
- CAA Debut: March 18 at Hampton
- Regular Season Finale: April 29 at Hofstra
Is the season opener against Rutgers significant? Absolutely. This matchup against a Rutgers program fresh off its first Championship Weekend appearance sets the tone for Stony Brook’s season. The history between these teams suggests another close, early-season battle, with their last two meetings decided by a single goal.
New Opponents and Conference Challenges
The move to the CAA brings a host of new opponents for Stony Brook to face. The Seawolves will test their skills against teams like Delaware, Drexel, Fairfield, Hampton, Hofstra, Monmouth, and Towson in conference play. This shift in competition presents both challenges and opportunities for the program to establish itself as a force in the CAA.
Notable Additions to the Schedule
- Air Force
- Delaware
- Drexel
- Fairfield
- Hampton
- Hofstra
- Monmouth
- Providence
- Sacred Heart
- Towson
How does the new schedule compare to previous years? The 2023 slate represents a significant shift, with the Seawolves no longer facing familiar America East opponents such as UAlbany, Binghamton, UMBC, UMass Lowell, and Vermont. Additionally, non-conference matchups against Syracuse, Dartmouth, and LIU have been replaced with new challenges.
Marquee Matchups to Watch
While every game on the schedule holds importance, certain contests stand out as potential season-defining moments for the Stony Brook lacrosse program.
Brown (March 4, Home)
The Seawolves open March by hosting the Brown Bears, continuing a competitive series that has seen the teams split their last six meetings. Last season, Stony Brook secured a 10-7 victory on the road in Providence. Can they maintain their momentum against Brown on home turf?
Towson (April 1, Home)
Stony Brook’s first major test in the CAA comes against the Towson Tigers, a perennial mid-major powerhouse. This early April showdown could very well be a preview of a postseason matchup, making it a crucial game for both programs. The contest marks the first meeting between these two since 2012, adding an element of unpredictability to the matchup.
Delaware (April 15, Home)
The defending CAA champion Delaware Blue Hens visit Long Island in mid-April, providing Stony Brook with a golden opportunity to make a statement in their new conference. A victory over the reigning champs would undoubtedly boost the Seawolves’ confidence and standing within the CAA. Could this be the first of two potential meetings between these squads, with a postseason rematch on the horizon?
The Impact of Conference Realignment
Stony Brook’s move to the CAA represents a significant shift in the landscape of college lacrosse. How will this transition affect the program’s prospects and national standing?
The CAA has long been recognized as a competitive conference in men’s lacrosse, with programs like Towson, Delaware, and Drexel regularly making noise on the national stage. By joining this conference, Stony Brook positions itself to face high-caliber opposition consistently throughout the season, potentially boosting its strength of schedule and postseason resume.
Moreover, the increased exposure and new rivalries formed within the CAA could help elevate Stony Brook’s recruiting profile, attracting top talent to Long Island. The program’s success in navigating this transition could set the stage for long-term growth and competitiveness at the highest levels of college lacrosse.
Building on Recent Success
The Seawolves enter the 2023 season looking to build upon their recent successes. How has the program fared in recent years, and what are the expectations for this campaign?
Under the guidance of head coach Anthony Gilardi, Stony Brook has established itself as a consistent contender, posting winning records and competing for conference titles. The team’s 9-5 record in 2022 demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level, and the move to the CAA provides an opportunity to prove themselves against new competition.
Key to the Seawolves’ success will be their ability to adapt to the different playing styles and strategies employed by their new conference opponents. The coaching staff’s preparation and the players’ execution will be crucial factors in determining how quickly Stony Brook can establish itself as a force in the CAA.
The Role of Home Field Advantage
With seven home games on the schedule, Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium will play a significant role in Stony Brook’s 2023 campaign. How important is home field advantage in college lacrosse, and how can the Seawolves leverage it to their benefit?
Home field advantage in lacrosse can be substantial, with familiar surroundings, supportive crowds, and reduced travel fatigue all contributing to improved performance. For Stony Brook, maximizing their home schedule could be key to a successful season, especially as they face new CAA opponents for the first time.
The Seawolves’ ability to defend their home turf against conference rivals like Towson, Delaware, and Fairfield could go a long way in determining their standing in the CAA and their postseason prospects. Creating a intimidating atmosphere at LaValle Stadium and building a strong home record will be crucial objectives for the team in 2023.
Preparing for the Postseason
As Stony Brook navigates its inaugural CAA season, the ultimate goal remains qualification for and success in the postseason. How does the new conference affiliation impact the Seawolves’ path to the NCAA Tournament?
The CAA typically sends at least one team to the NCAA Tournament each year, with the conference champion receiving an automatic bid. Stony Brook’s performance in conference play will be crucial in securing a favorable seed in the CAA Tournament and potentially earning that automatic qualification.
Additionally, strong showings against non-conference opponents like Rutgers, Penn State, and Brown could bolster the Seawolves’ resume for at-large consideration should they fall short of the CAA title. Every game on the schedule takes on added importance as Stony Brook looks to make a statement in their new conference and on the national stage.
As the 2023 season approaches, anticipation builds for Stony Brook’s debut in the CAA. With a challenging schedule featuring both familiar foes and new rivals, the Seawolves have the opportunity to cement their status as a program on the rise in college lacrosse. Fans and opponents alike will be watching closely to see how Stony Brook adapts to its new conference home and whether they can translate their recent success to even greater achievements in the seasons to come.
