One third of female student athletes have mental health problems
“Depression made me feel unworthy to start playing on the field,” says 22-year-old Jacqueline Oleksak. Oleksak played softball at Stonehill College in Massachusetts for over three years before leaving the team and moving to Hofstra University in New York. “She made me feel like I let my team down every time I make a mistake, even in training. My self-esteem dropped terribly because of this, ”she says.
Oleksak is a student-athlete who struggles with a mental disorder, and there are more and more people like her. According to one 2016 study , about 30 percent of female student athletes surveyed showed signs of depression, compared with only 18 percent of their male counterparts. Runners exhibited symptoms to the highest degree – a new book, What Made Maddy Run by ESPN’s Kate Fagan, looks at this unfortunate phenomenon 19-year-old Madison Holleran.
The runner from the University of Pennsylvania entered the sport brilliantly in her freshman year. Holleran was quick-witted, friendly, possessed of a strong support system and enviable sportsmanship. While her family knew she had a hard time transitioning from local soccer star to top-tier sports star when she committed suicide in 2014, they were shocked. Holleran’s sister, Carly, , told Fagan in 2015: “In Madison’s case, it seems like she was happy at first, sad the next day, and then disappeared.”
According to Fagan (who used the young athlete’s texts and emails to brighten up Holleran’s voice in the book), no one knows for sure when things changed for this 18-year-old, described by her friends as thoughtful, cheerful and lively. However, something did change, and it began to happen after Holleran plunged into the risk-filled world of Ivy League Division I sports (since 2013 at the University of Pennsylvania committed suicide 12 students ).
She no longer ran for fun or as an occasional addition to the love of her life, football. Now she competed in the run in the hallowed institutions, which was accompanied by all sorts of pressure. “One of the biggest misconceptions about student-athletes is that they seem to live in greenhouse conditions or are ‘spoiled’, as if due to the fact that many of them receive scholarships, they have undeserved privileges,” says Denise Kwok, Head of Student Athlete Education at the University of Southern California.
The reality is very different. While student-athletes like Holleran may enjoy some limited fame, they are often terribly torn apart as they struggle to maintain their brilliant academic performance while maintaining grueling physical training. “Even when the brain needs a break, the sport doesn’t stop at all,” says Oleksak. “[In varsity sports] there is no such thing as… mental health day. We have to be able to combine sports, studies and social life, and this is terribly difficult. If you add mental illness, it [becomes] even more difficult.”
Holleran showed signs of great stress, combining sports with her studies, and when her emotional state became less stable, it became more difficult to do so. Fagan says that Holleran, when her first semester at the university ended, told almost everyone she knew that she no longer wanted to run at this university. Holleran, who also loved writing and the visual arts, considered transferring to Lehigh University.

Having finally decided to stop running, she read a candid letter to her coach: “It seems to me that I have dug very deep and … it is impossible to get back. I thought long and hard about this, and it seems to me that I just need to take a semester of academic leave in order to understand what I really want from life and who I really am. After listening to Holleran’s letter, her trainer offered to work with her more slowly if she considered staying. She agreed to try, but soon after the start of the second semester, she committed suicide.
Fagan is familiar with at least some of Holleran’s problems; she admits that she “looked a lot like Maddie” when she played basketball from 1999-2004 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Although Fagan did not struggle with clinical mental illness, she nevertheless considered leaving the team due to unexpected pressure on her. “I was ready to leave and move home,” she recalls. This is especially difficult when everyone around you seems to expect you not only to cope with constant stress, but also to do it silently and with a smile.
Mental toughness is part of the traditional mentality in varsity sports, says Oleksak, and notes, “With the onset of mental illness, student-athletes [may] be less likely to come forward about it or seek help.” She attributes this reluctance to the false notion that “since we are athletes, we can overcome anything.”
Becca Martin, who suffered mild depression while playing lacrosse at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (she graduated in 2016), agrees and recalls the common notion that “in training, nothing else matters.” “. This mindset was not only difficult to accept (athletes are human too), it was also potentially harmful to players who already had mental health issues. “You have to pretend like it doesn’t exist. You can’t take days off, and if you do, you… will be put in the first number,” she says.
It is unclear why female athletes seem to be more susceptible to mental illness than men. Fagan says, “It’s hard to find a direct causal relationship in all my material.” But Patricia Allen, counseling psychologist and CEO of Medical Services at Summit Behavioral Health, says, “I think a lot of female athletes try to achieve differently. They are more required to be strong, successful, competitive, healthy and resilient.”
These girls may also have other problems, such as body image problems. Although statistical studies characterize the prevalence of eating disorders among student athletes in different ways, according to one 2015 study, female student athletes tend to be at a higher risk of eating problems “by about 14-19 percent compared to their male counterparts “. Allen also argues that female student athletes are often victims of a disorder called the “female athletic triad,” which The National Center for Health Research characterizes as “the relationship between menstrual dysfunction, caloric deficit, and reduced bone mineral density. ”
And then there is fame and everything that is expected from an athlete when she becomes famous and popular. Holleran was active on the Internet ; from a series of her joyful photos there was a cutting of frames in which she laughed, competed and played with friends. The unique requirement of social media that life must always be perfect can put even more pressure on young athletes who may already be walking the edge, as they say. “The constant pressure of social media, technology and [the public’s] desire to know everything, to be in the know, especially in the case of more famous athletes, is a source of difficulty,” says Kwok. “Students live in the spotlight for which they are not always ready.”
According to NCAA statistics, suicide is the third leading cause of death among student athletes, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by the organization. In 2013, the NCAA chief medical officer declared mental health a top priority for the organization, and since then, universities across the country have been trying harder to expand their support for student-athletes. At the University of Southern California, Kwok states, “We assign a team of four full-time licensed psychologists who are specially trained [to work] with our athletes’ mental health and performance issues.” The university also works with a psychiatrist whose sole responsibility is to help local athletes.
However, for young athletes who still find themselves in the fog of mental illness, this is a daily battle that is not easy to win. “People generally don’t realize that mental illness is not a choice,” says Oleksak. “Thinking positively or trying to smile more will not cure depression or anxiety. It’s much deeper and more complex.”
