Sidney Crosby suffers a broken jaw, Pittsburgh wins 15 consecutive games and strengthens ahead of the playoffs, and Jaromir Jagr moves to Boston. Review of the NHL week in the material “RBC-Sport”.
Event
Pittsburgh became the main newsmaker of the week. With Calgary captain Jerome Iginla, Dallas captain Brendan Morrow and San Jose defenseman Douglas Murray, the Penguins made a solid bid for the Stanley Cup.
At the same time, one cannot fail to note the skill of the club’s general manager, Ray Shero. If the price of Murray and Morrow was basically low – a choice in the later rounds of the draft and some young hockey player, then Iginla was very expensive. However, “Pittsburgh” got the leader of “Calgary” almost for nothing. The Lights were given forwards Kenny Agostino and Ben Hanowski, as well as a low-profile first-round pick in 2013.
It is curious that Iginla almost moved to Boston, as even the authoritative Canadian site TSN reported. However, upon learning of Pittsburgh’s interest, Jerome blocked the trade to the Bears and opted for the Penguins. At the same time, Iginla has already expressed a desire to extend the contract with the new team. This will be difficult to do. Still, the Pittsburgh payroll is already large, and the salary cap will decrease next season. On the other hand, if Jerome agrees to a modest deal, why not.
However, good news from the Penguins camp alternated with bad. With their 15th consecutive win against the Islanders and closer to their own 20-year-old record of 17 wins, the team lost Sidney Crosby. In one of the episodes, the puck hit the Canadian in the face, knocked out several of his teeth and broke his jaw. It is not known when Crosby will return to action. At least he didn’t have a concussion.
Hero
Pittsburgh goaltender Tomas Vokoun had to fill in for an injured teammate Marc-Andre Fleury. Czech coped with his task with a bang. Taking the post in the third period of the match with the “Montreal” Vokoun repelled all 12 shots on goal. The goalkeeper liked not to miss so much that he followed up with the “dried” “Islanders” and “Winnipeg”, taking on a total of 55 shots. And only “Buffalo” picked up the keys to the Vokouna frame – four goals in 23 minutes.
Team
Team of the week, of course, is Pittsburgh, who won three out of four matches and ended the winning streak at 15, losing to Buffalo. However, the “Penguins” in this section have already become frequent, so let’s pay attention to other clubs.
For example, “San Jose”. After a great start, the Sharks sank and showed practically no signs of life. In the period from January 30 to March 23, the team won only three victories in regular time. But last week tightened the white streak to five meetings, which allowed the “San Jose” to get into the playoff zone.
Edmonton is located not far from the cup eight. Young “Oilers” are still playing fun and unstable, but over the past seven days have been able to pick up points – four wins in a row. The playoff zone is now within reach. But for the Stanley Cup, “Edmonton” has not fought for seven years.
News
The closer the last day of exchanges, the more active the clubs and the press, which spreads rumors. In addition to “Pittsburgh” this week strengthened “St. Louis”. The Blues acquired two defensemen, Calgary’s Jay Baumister, for whom the Lights received the first pick in the draft, and Buffalo’s Jordan Leopold, who was rated the second pick in the draft. In addition, the Blades parted ways with defensive player Robin Regier, who moved to Los Angeles for draft picks.
Dallas said goodbye to Czech great Jaromir Jagr, who was sent to Boston for two young players and a draft pick, and traded forward “Derek” Roy to Vancouver. San Jose traded goalkeeper Ryan Clow to the Rangers.
There were a lot of rumors this week too. All the same “Buffalo” can part with team captain Jason Pominville and goalkeeper Ryan Miller, who claims “Tampa”. Passions around the goalkeepers boil in Toronto. The Maple Leaves choose between Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo and Calgary’s Mikka Kiprusoff. The last day of exchanges promises to be hot.
Words
“It’s hard to leave Calgary, but I had the opportunity to play for Pittsburgh and achieve important goals. I want my name on the Stanley Cup. It was hard to turn down the opportunity to partner with Malkin and Crosby.” – Jerome Iginla after moving to Pittsburgh.
“Fire that clown Tortorella.” Players hate him and don’t want to fight for their coach. They’re tired of the bullshit he’s spouting,” former Rangers player Sean Avery on team coach John Tortorella.0003
“Losing 1-7 to Chicago is a disgrace. You have to be trained and have a work ethic to be successful. We have no excuses. Neither the players nor the coaching staff were prepared for the game. ” – Detroit head coach Mike Babcock after being beaten by Chicago.
Numbers
Alexander Ovechkin received 22 stitches on his chin after one of his workouts. Blame it all – unsuccessfully rebounded puck.
1000 passes in the NHLovskoy career made forward “Dallas” Jaromir Jagr. If the Czech had not been absent for a couple of years in the KHL, he would have overcome a thousand a long time ago.
