The long-awaited holidays have come, and many guys have already gone or are going to summer camps.
Today we will tell about the history of children’s summer holidays in Russia and abroad and what modern summer camps are like.
Summer children’s recreational institutions in our country appeared long before the emergence of such a thing as a “pioneer camp”. They originate in Denmark. It was there that in 1847 a local philanthropist, with the assistance of caring citizens, helped organize a holiday for poor children in a village on the seashore. A quarter of a century later, in 1872, Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna, the granddaughter of Emperor Paul I, set up the first medical colony in the Russian Empire, the Shelter for Recovering Children, in Oranienbaum near St. Petersburg. The word “colony” was in use at that time, and vacationers, respectively, were called “colonists”. The first pedagogical colony appeared in 1876 in Switzerland, where pastor Walter Bion organized a three-week trip to the countryside for 70 children. Subsequently, in 1880–1890 years, summer children’s colonies began to appear throughout Europe: in France, Italy, Germany, Belgium.
The development of summer recreation for children in our country was also very active. By 1908, in terms of the number of children’s pedagogical and health-improving colonies, Russia was ahead of any country in Europe. At the First All-Russian Congress on Public Education in 1913, state support for children’s summer colonies and sanatoriums was secured. A year before, at the All-Russian Congress of Pediatric Doctors, a resolution was adopted on the creation of forest schools for weakened children. In addition to the state, there were private colonies and those that belonged to charitable organizations and church schools. The children’s movement was supported by the emperor, educational and military institutions. Children’s clubs, religious children’s organizations, student circles and cooperatives, and out-of-school organizations developed. Health-improving sanatoriums for children suffering from tuberculosis were created. At the suggestion of Emperor Nicholas II, the scout movement was born in Russia, and at 19The first scout camp opened in 1515.
The main tasks of the movement were the physical training of young people and the education of responsibility and patriotism.
An indispensable condition for the existence of a children’s colony was its connection with the school, since the colonies solved not only medical, but also social and educational problems. First of all, the weakest children were selected for the summer colony, the rest of the places could be taken by the best students in terms of academic performance.
Health procedures were carried out in the colonies: baths, baths, swimming in the river, sports activities. The children’s diet was closely monitored. But no less important role was played by practical educational sessions. The task of the colonies was not only to improve the health of children and take care of their well-being, but also to teach young people the skills and abilities necessary in adult life, to help them become responsible and hardworking people. Together with educators and local residents, the colonists learned to work in the field and handle agricultural implements.
Much attention was paid to cultural leisure and broadening the horizons of children. They went on excursions to nearby cities, saw the sights, and participated in local holidays. Later, the experience of the activity of summer pedagogical colonies will be used in the Soviet system of pioneer camps.
After the revolution, the activities of summer recreational establishments were stopped for some time, only to resume in the early 1920s in a new form. In 1922, a pioneer organization was established, and soon the first pioneer camps began to appear. The camps were created by trade union, Komsomol and economic organizations, collective farms and state farms, public education and health authorities, committees on physical culture and sports. Pioneer camps were divided into urban and suburban, sanatorium and health, sports, military sports, specialized, labor and recreation camps. Pioneer camps solved all the same tasks: to organize exciting outdoor activities for children, which included hiking, swimming in the river or in the sea, games, contests, sports competitions, costume performances, etc., as well as to strengthen the health of the child, cultivate love and respect for work, to increase social activity.
Today there are hundreds of state and commercial camps in Russia for every taste, depending on the needs and interests of the child. And although the tasks of the camp have remained unchanged: active physical and intellectual leisure, proper nutrition, development of life skills, education of a versatile and healthy personality, the approach to organizing children’s recreation in modern Russia has been fundamentally rethought. Here are just a few examples.

The purpose of Sirius’s work is the early identification, development and further professional support of gifted children. Sirius programs are implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
The center is open all year round and free of charge for children. The program is designed for 24 days, and, in addition to specialty classes conducted by leading teachers and outstanding artists, children will enjoy exciting leisure activities: master classes, creative meetings, and a complex of wellness procedures. During the school months, children continue their general education classes.
Elena Vladimirovna Shmeleva, head of the Talent and Success Foundation and the Sirius Center, answering a question about how to educate active, professional, responsible and fair citizens, said the following:
“Easy: identify early and develop the talents in everyone. Forming internal preferences, inspiring and dreaming together, this brings up in a child, and in any person, a serious internal motivation to achieve their own goals in the common field of priority tasks for Russia.
And this system, namely the system, is being created and worked out in Sirius. Models for children and teenagers are already ready, they have begun to be implemented as part of the creation of regional talent development centers. It seems to me that the creation and dissemination throughout the country of a new educational model, a new educational culture – attitudes towards schoolchildren and teachers, and not at the level of just ideas, but at the level of proven methods that have proven their effectiveness, is the main result of the creation and development of Sirius “.
Note that within the framework of the national project “Education” from the federal budget of the Russian Federation, funds are being subsidized for the creation of regional centers for identifying, supporting and developing abilities and talents in children and youth. In 2018, a federal-scale project “The Success of Every Child” was adopted, according to which it is planned to create regional centers in 85 constituent entities of the Russian Federation by 2024.
The well-known “Artek”, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, is not just a complex for children’s summer holidays, but a fully educational institution. From September to May, children living in the Crimea (permanent contingent) and those who come to participate in the educational program of the Artek International Children’s Center (replacement contingent) continue their education at the Artek school. The school, built in 2004, is designed for the simultaneous education of 1,200 people in 63 classrooms, but education goes beyond classrooms: parks, museums, palaces, historical sites of Artek and Crimea become educational space. Graduates of the school have the opportunity to enter universities in the Crimea and other regions of Russia, as well as abroad.
Every child who comes to Artek can receive additional education from the widest range of general education and general development programs. Studios and specialized teams work within the structure of Artek and with the support of partners; for each child, together with a teacher, an educational route is created within the walls of Artek and beyond.
For children, counselors and students of the Artek ICC school, there is a system of libraries and a museum and educational complex.
The programs of the all-Russian children’s center “Eaglet”, also subordinate to the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, are designed for year-round children’s recreation. 13 three-week shifts offer both additional general developmental programs (for example, “Cultural Code of Russia”, “Young Ecologists of Russia”, “Gagarin Starts”, etc.) and thematic programs (for example, “Knowing the world of the future through the science of the present”, “All-Russian Festival of Patriotic Songs”, “The World of My Opportunities”, etc.). Many programs are implemented jointly with leading scientific institutions of the Russian Federation. For example, the only thematic session in the country dedicated to practical underwater research was held in Orlyonok in June 2021 with the support of the Center for Underwater Research of the Russian Geographical Society.
There is a school for children who come to Orlyonok from September to May. Vacationers can visit the Orlyonka museum and exhibition complex and go on an excursion to the House of Aviation and Cosmonautics. The astronomical observatory, equipped with the most modern equipment, is a unique educational platform.
If we talk about summer holidays in the usual sense, tourist and sports camps located in different regions of Russia are still very popular. The programs of such camps usually include team sports and intellectual games, sports tourism lessons, quizzes, trips with and without overnight stays, swimming in the sea or in the river, water sports, quests, field trips, discos and much more. Some camps for children provide courses for personal growth, project activities, teamwork. This also includes equestrian camps, offering, among other things, the care of horses and other domestic animals.
A non-standard approach to summer leisure can be found in creative camps.
Some children are invited to plunge into the atmosphere of a role-playing game that develops the child’s imagination, communication skills and creative skills. Children participate in games with their peers, learn communication and teamwork, take master classes and quests, and solve puzzles. Creative camps are designed for children with different temperaments and interests. You can learn fencing or build trade relations with partners in the game, learn the basics of politics, try yourself as an artisan. For imagination there are no barriers!
Working with video is a fashion trend. There are several summer camps in Russia where children are taught the basics of cinematography, from writing a script to shooting a short film. There is even a camp for future TV presenters and bloggers. The program includes not only games, but also mastering the skills of shooting, interviewing, video editing.
Language camps are aimed at learning and practicing foreign languages. In an informal environment, in an atmosphere of fun and without stress, it is much easier for children to learn languages.
Military-patriotic camps are also popular. Their main task is to educate a citizen who loves his relatives and friends, his people and his Motherland, a creative and talented person. The children are not only given good physical and military training, but they are also introduced to nature, traditions and culture, they are given thematic lectures and talks, creative evenings and competitions are held, interesting people are invited to meetings, and popular science, feature and documentary films are shown.
Rostourism, on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation, is conducting a program to support affordable trips to children’s camps.
As for children’s summer holidays abroad, for example, in the USA, there was initially a slightly different approach to setting up a camp. The first summer camps appeared back in the 1880s and were aimed at returning children to nature, organizing leisure activities outside the city and saving children from moral and physical degradation, which, as they believed, would certainly come if children did not go out into nature, break out from the strict limits of city life.
Gradually, the vision changed, and from original shelters from the bustle of the city, the camps turned into more civilized structures with their own goals and objectives. Children learned how to survive in the forest, explored nature, engaged in crafts, creativity and sports. The movement of boy and girl scouts has become widespread. At 19In 1922, the United States became a founding member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
Windsor Mountain Summer Camp in New Hampshire is an example of a classic American summer camp. This camp by the lake does not practice a competitive approach, the program for children aged 7-16 is aimed at personal growth, developing the child’s self-confidence and independence. Children go in for painting, sports, music, cooking, attend a theater group and a video laboratory, learn to work on the ground. A similar approach to quiet summer activities and the development of social-emotional skills is used in many camps in the United States.
If children like more active holidays, a wide variety of sports and thematic camps are open for them.
In many states there are camps with an emphasis on American football, basketball, golf, lacrosse.
One of the most unusual camps in the US is Pali Adventures located in Southern California. About 30 different programs have been prepared for children to choose from, depending on the interests of the child: acting, the art of professional makeup, stand-up, rock music and much more. A popular program at the camp is “Hollywood Stuntman”, where during the shift the guys learn to perform various tricks that can be seen in the movies, but which are not recommended to be repeated at home. All classes are conducted by professional stuntmen, carefully observing safety precautions.
If a child thinks about the future and career from an early age, you can go to the BizSmart summer camp. The program includes the acquisition of business skills, solving urgent business problems, teamwork and mentoring from business industry professionals. Children and teenagers aged 11-19 can plunge into the world of big business.
Camps with weight loss programs are in high demand. According to statistics, one in five people in the United States suffers from problems associated with being overweight. Therefore, weight loss camps take care not only to help children lose extra pounds, but also to instill in them a culture of proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. For example, in the Jump Start summer camp for children and teenagers 9-18 years old are immersed in the atmosphere of a healthy lifestyle. During the shift, which can last from 2 to 8 weeks, children do not use electronic devices, but all conditions for outdoor activities are created for them: outdoor games, aerobics, water sports, cycling. Creative circles, excursions and trainings do not let you get bored. An important part of the program is leadership training, which helps children get rid of self-doubt associated with being overweight. And, of course, the program is based on a balanced diet and teaching children the principles of proper nutrition, menu planning, and healthy eating behavior.
And what about in Europe? The birthplace of the first pedagogical colony, Switzerland, can be safely called the center of attraction for children from all over Europe, if not the world. In addition to the mass of private schools, there are many large international summer camps in Switzerland, where children from different countries come. Clean air, nature, the opportunity to break away from the usual gadgets and devote time to games and sports, practice foreign languages, and meet peers from all over the world make Switzerland a popular destination for children’s summer holidays.
There are also many fitness-oriented camps in Europe, and camps at famous football clubs are very popular among them. For example, Nike Football Camp With Chelsea FC offers programs for boys and girls. During the shift, children can not only develop football skills, but also improve their English. There is a lot of physical activity on the program, as well as excursions to the Stamford Bridge stadium, the Chelsea training center and to nearby cities.
The Spanish club Real Madrid has a similar football camp. During their stay at the summer camp, children learn the wisdom of football in the spirit of the club’s values: respect, teamwork, leadership, hard work and self-discipline.
Asia is not lagging behind. A large international Camp Asia camp is located in Singapore and offers a wide range of summer programs: physical training, creativity, learning foreign languages, natural sciences and mathematics, robotics.

The activities of the camp are focused on improving social skills and developing self-confidence through physical and creative activity. The summer program includes creative activities and crafts, dance, foreign languages and mathematics, sports and even circus art.
