No. 19 Ohio State Falls in Overtime to No. 5 Maryland, 12-11

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Maryland, 12-11, in overtime on Friday night at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes are now 5-6 on the year and 1-2 in Big Ten play.

“I’m incredibly proud of our men,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. “It started with our families on the field and our senior day. We have a really special group of seniors and I want to say thank you to them and thank you to their families. We had an incredible crowd; Buckeye Nation and our home games this year have been really special, and tonight was certainly no different. Tonight was an awesome game and we would’ve loved to get one more… It will sting for sure, but it’s a special weekend. We have a lot to be thankful for and we’ll get back to work and get ready to go for our next one. ”

The Short Story
Ohio State stepped into the lead just 25 seconds into the game and held the advantage for more than 48 minutes of the contest. The Buckeyes went on on a five-goal scoring streak and led by as many as five goals twice on the night.

But, the Terrapins were able to chip away at the Buckeye lead and won the fourth quarter, holding Ohio State scoreless in the final frame and tying the game at 11-11 with 2:09 to play in regulation. With just 52 seconds on the clock in the overtime period, Maryland’s Braden Erksa scored to push the Terrapins past the Buckeyes, 12-11.

Cullen Brown scooped up a team-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers in the game while senior goalie Skylar Wahlund made eight saves on the day for the Buckeyes.

How The Goals Were Scored

• Ohio State was on the board early, with Ed Shean scoring just 25 seconds into the game off an assist from Jonny Cool. The Buckeyes added to their lead with a goal from Colby Smith assisted by Ari Allen at the 12:33 mark for a 2-0 advantage less than two and a half minutes into the game.
• Maryland tied up the game at 2-2 as Daniel Kelly scored a couple of goals in a span of 2:02, but Ohio State took the first quarter lead off a goal from Ed Shean with just eight seconds left on the clock.
• The Buckeyes went on to score four more to kick off the second quarter and string together five unanswered goals against the Terrapins. Kyle Borda tallied two and Trent DiCicco and Shean added their own to grow the Ohio State lead to 7-2.
• Maryland stopped the Buckeyes’ run at 4:40 in the second quarter with a goal from Zach Whittier, but Shean answered back with his third of the day at 3:23 to take back the five-goal lead.
• Shean again found the back of the net with less than 10 seconds to play in the quarter as Ohio State took a 9-5 advantage into the half.
• The second half scoring tilted in favor of Maryland as the Terrapins outscored the Buckeyes 3-2 in the third quarter and 3-0 in the fourth to tie the game for just the second time of the day with just over two minutes left in regulation. Maryland secured the win with under a minute to play in the first overtime period.

• Ohio State recognized its 2023 senior class prior to Friday night’s game. The group of 18 players includes Drew Blanchard, Kyle Borda, James Cipolla, Sam Faber, Carter Hilleary, James Hogan, Caton Johnson, Jason Knox, Connor Mitchell, Jack Myers, Garrett Nilsen, Mitchell Pehlke, Carson Rainey, Colby Smith, Jake Snyder, Skylar Wahlund, Scott White and Stephen Zupicich. In their careers at Ohio State, they have helped the team to 32 wins on the field and program record results in the classroom.
• A record-setting attendance of 2,456 fans was at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium to watch the prime-time tilt between the Buckeyes and Terrapins. The game marked the second sell-out crowd of the year for Ohio State.
• Ed Shean tied his career-high with five goals in the game against Maryland. He led the team with five points on the night. He has recorded five goals in three games this year for the Buckeyes.
• Kyle Borda recorded his sixth multi-point game of the year for Ohio State with three points on Friday night. He has recorded three points in the last four games.
• The game marked the fourth time in series history that the matchup between the Ohio State and Maryland has been decided in overtime. The Buckeyes’ 11 goals in the contest are the second-most goals the team has scored against Maryland.
• Ohio State gave up a season-low 10 turnovers in the game.

The Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) has announced the venues for the 2023 season.

“The 2023 season will bring professional lacrosse to every corner of the country, from Boston and Charlotte to the Pacific Northwest,” said League co-founder and president Paul Rabil. “We are looking forward to our first trip to the brand new state of the art lacrosse facility at Ohio State University.”

“Several returning markets – Albany, Fairfield, Baltimore and Denver – all sold out in 2022,” said co-founder and CEO Michael Rabil. “We see interest in professional lacrosse continuing to grow, with ticketing revenue up 24% year-on-year. ”

Gillette Stadium (Boston) will host all three quarterfinal matches. James M. Schuart Stadium (Long Island) will host the semi-finals. The final, for the third time in the history of the league, will be held at Subaru Park (Philadelphia).

Lacrosse (from French la crosse – club) – a contact sports game between two teams using a small rubber ball (62. 8-64.77 mm, 140-146 g) and a stick with a long handle called a stick ( English lacrosse stick or French crosse). Lacrosse is often considered a tough contact sport, but injuries are much less common than in American football and other contact sports. The top of the stick is braided with a loose mesh designed to catch and hold the ball. The object of the game is to shoot the ball into the opponent’s goal, using the stick to catch, control and pass the ball. The task of the defense is to prevent a goal and get the ball with a stick, contact grappling or correct position on the field. There are four positions in the game: midfielder, attacker, defender, goalkeeper. In field lacrosse, the attackers only attack (except in the “ride” situation, when the defense tries to clear the ball and the attackers try to interfere with them), the defenders only defend (except in the “clear” situation, when they need to clear the ball), the goalkeeper is the last a line of defense directly protecting the goal, midfielders can be anywhere in the field and play both defensively and offensively, although at a high level of play there is always a specialization between defensive and attacking midfielders.
