“Make sure we don’t think about removing you from the squad.
”
In his first year in the 2021-22 NLL season, TJ Comisio was one of two rookies to score 15+ points, 90+ rebounds and 20+ rebounds. The other was Reid Bowerin.
TJ Comisio grew up in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, a city where field lacrosse is the preferred version of the game, not box lacrosse. It wasn’t until 14 years after he started playing the field that he was able to watch his first box lacrosse match, and that was only after the NLL Draft, where he was drafted by Georgia Swarm.
In his youth, Comisio could be found playing all over the field. He spent time in attack, in the center of the field and in defense, doing everything that the coaches demanded of him so that the team could achieve the greatest success. While attending Delbarton High School, he earned a university degree and won a state amateur championship.
Comisio then shone at Villanova University, eventually earning USILA All American and All-Big East honors while playing in short-stick defensive midfield. By the time he graduated from university, box lacrosse was still a mystery to the New Jersey native. Little did he know that a version of the game he once knew nothing about would soon become the leading platform for showcasing his lacrosse game.
In 2019, in his first pro lacrosse game with the now-defunct Atlanta Blaze MLL team, he met some of the NLL’s biggest stars. Playing side by side with names like Mark Matthews, Randy Staats and Shane Jackson, Comisio learned all about indoor play and yet, while the idea intrigued him, he was still not sure how well he would fit in there.
It wasn’t until after the NLL Draft that Comisio was finally able to watch the first games of box lacrosse, watching many of his Blaze teammates compete in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship.
“I had no expectations of being drafted into the NLL,” says Comisio. “When I was watching the Draft, I was very surprised that Georgia Swarm chose me in the 3rd round.”
Although Comisio didn’t make the final 2019-20 squad, he had a place in training camp and took the time to hone his skills and watch games he could play. But as any athlete will tell you, there is no better practice than being in a game situation.
“I practiced and watched, but while watching was helpful, if you want to learn the game, you have to be there playing with the guys,” Comisio said. “After the canceled 2021 season, my contract expired but I re-signed with the team. It took me much longer to master the game, so last season my goal was to get into the team.”
More motivated and experienced than ever before, Comisio will reach his goal on his second attempt – he will get into the active squad. Before his first NLL game, the Swarm coaching staff gave Comisio a piece of advice that he will keep in his head every game: make sure we don’t think about taking you out of the squad. He would end up playing in 17 regular season games.
Certainly mistakes were made during the year – Comisio would be the first to admit it. However, the Swarm coaching staff constantly encouraged the team, especially the young players.
