The Road to the Final Four: Quarterfinal Results
The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Tournament has reached its penultimate stage, with four powerhouse teams emerging victorious from the quarterfinals. The results of these intense matchups have set the stage for an exhilarating Final Four in Philadelphia:
- No. 1 Duke 15, Michigan 8
- No. 2 Virginia 17, No. 7 Georgetown 14
- No. 3 Notre Dame 12, No. 6 Johns Hopkins 9
- No. 5 Penn State 10, Army West Point 9
These outcomes reflect the dominance of the top-seeded teams, with Duke, Virginia, and Notre Dame all advancing as expected. Penn State, seeded fifth, rounds out the Final Four, having narrowly edged out a determined Army West Point squad.
Final Four Matchups: A Battle of Lacrosse Titans
The semifinal games promise to be thrilling contests between some of the most respected programs in collegiate lacrosse. Here’s the schedule for the upcoming matches:
- Saturday, May 27: No. 1 Duke vs. No. 5 Penn State (12:00 ET)
- Saturday, May 27: No. 2 Virginia vs. No. 3 Notre Dame (2:30 ET)
The winners of these semifinal clashes will face off in the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship Game on Monday, May 29.
Duke’s Dominance: Breaking Down the Blue Devils’ Victory
The top-seeded Duke Blue Devils lived up to their billing with a commanding 15-8 victory over Michigan. What factors contributed to Duke’s success in this quarterfinal matchup?
- A dominant second quarter that set the tone for the rest of the game
- An outstanding performance by junior attackman Brennan O’Neill, who scored six goals and added an assist
- Additional hat tricks from Andrew McAdorey and Dyson Williams, showcasing Duke’s offensive depth
O’Neill’s double hat trick placed him in elite company, becoming only the third player in Duke’s program history to achieve this feat in an NCAA Tournament game. This offensive firepower will be crucial as the Blue Devils aim for their fourth national championship.
Virginia’s Offensive Onslaught: Cavaliers Outgun Georgetown
The second-seeded Virginia Cavaliers secured their spot in the Final Four with a high-scoring 17-14 victory over Georgetown. How did Virginia manage to outlast the Hoyas in this offensive shootout?
- A balanced scoring attack, with five players contributing at least two goals
- Connor Shellenberger’s standout performance, netting six goals
- Solid goaltending from Matthew Nunes, who made 14 crucial saves
Despite being outshot by Georgetown, Virginia’s efficient offense and strong defensive play proved to be the difference-makers. The Cavaliers will look to carry this momentum into their semifinal matchup against Notre Dame.
Notre Dame’s Second-Half Surge: Fighting Irish Overcome Johns Hopkins
The third-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish secured their place in the Final Four with a 12-9 victory over Johns Hopkins. What was the turning point in this closely contested quarterfinal?
A three-goal run late in the first half broke a 4-4 tie, giving Notre Dame a lead they would not relinquish. This momentum shift proved crucial, as the Fighting Irish maintained their advantage throughout the second half.
Notre Dame’s program has a history of deep postseason runs, but they are still in search of their first national championship. Can they break through this year and claim the elusive title?
Penn State’s Nail-Biter: Nittany Lions Edge Army West Point
In the closest quarterfinal matchup, fifth-seeded Penn State narrowly defeated Army West Point 10-9. How did the Nittany Lions manage to fend off the Black Knights’ late surge?
Penn State’s victory was a testament to their resilience and ability to perform under pressure. The Nittany Lions held off a determined Army West Point squad that had previously upset defending national champion Maryland in the first round.
As the lowest-seeded team remaining in the tournament, Penn State will face a significant challenge against top-seeded Duke in the semifinals. Can the Nittany Lions continue their impressive run and pull off another upset?
Historical Context: A Fresh Final Four Lineup
An interesting aspect of this year’s Final Four is the absence of any teams from last year’s semifinals. What implications does this have for the tournament?
- It showcases the depth and competitiveness of Division I men’s lacrosse
- It provides an opportunity for new storylines and potential first-time champions
- It highlights the cyclical nature of success in collegiate athletics
While these four teams didn’t make the Final Four last year, they are all established powerhouses in the sport. Duke, Virginia, and Notre Dame, in particular, have rich lacrosse traditions and multiple national championships between them.
Key Players to Watch in the Final Four
As we look ahead to the semifinal matchups, several players have emerged as potential game-changers for their respective teams. Who are some of the standout performers to keep an eye on?
- Brennan O’Neill (Duke): Coming off a six-goal performance in the quarterfinals, O’Neill’s scoring prowess will be crucial for the Blue Devils.
- Connor Shellenberger (Virginia): With six goals against Georgetown, Shellenberger has shown he can take over games when it matters most.
- Matthew Nunes (Virginia): The Cavaliers’ goalie made 14 saves in the quarterfinals and will need to maintain his strong form against Notre Dame’s potent offense.
These players, among others, have the potential to make game-changing plays and lead their teams to victory in Philadelphia.
Potential Rematches and Rivalries
The semifinal matchups present intriguing storylines and potential rematches. How might previous encounters influence these games?
Duke and Notre Dame have a history of memorable postseason clashes, including the 2014 national championship game. If both teams advance, we could see a rematch of that thrilling final.
Virginia and Notre Dame, as ACC rivals, are familiar foes. Their semifinal matchup promises to be a closely contested battle between two teams that know each other well.
The Impact of Seeding in the Tournament
With three of the top four seeds reaching the Final Four, how significant has seeding been in this year’s tournament?
The performance of the top seeds underscores the accuracy of the selection committee’s rankings. However, Penn State’s presence as a fifth seed demonstrates that upsets are always possible in tournament play.
Historically, how often do lower-seeded teams make deep runs in the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament? While not uncommon, it’s still noteworthy when a team like Penn State breaks through to the Final Four.
Offensive vs. Defensive Strengths
As we analyze the remaining teams, it’s clear that each brings a unique blend of offensive firepower and defensive stability. How do these teams compare in terms of their strengths on both ends of the field?
- Duke: Known for their high-powered offense, averaging over 15 goals per game
- Virginia: Balanced attack with multiple scoring threats and solid goaltending
- Notre Dame: Strong defensive unit complemented by efficient offensive production
- Penn State: Resilient team capable of winning close games
These varying styles and strengths should lead to fascinating tactical battles in the semifinals and potentially the championship game.
The Role of Experience in the Final Four
While none of these teams made the Final Four last year, many have extensive postseason experience. How might this factor into their performance on the big stage in Philadelphia?
Programs like Duke, Virginia, and Notre Dame have a history of success in the NCAA Tournament. This experience can be invaluable in high-pressure situations and may give them an edge as they compete for the national title.
For Penn State, this represents a significant opportunity to establish themselves among the elite programs in college lacrosse. Can they leverage their underdog status and the momentum from their quarterfinal victory to make a run at the championship?
Tactical Considerations for the Semifinals
As teams prepare for their semifinal matchups, what key tactical elements might come into play?
- Face-offs: Winning possession can be crucial in tightly contested games
- Man-up and man-down situations: Special teams play often makes the difference in playoff lacrosse
- Tempo control: Each team will look to dictate the pace that best suits their style of play
Coaches will be meticulously game-planning to exploit their opponents’ weaknesses while maximizing their own strengths. The ability to adapt and make in-game adjustments could prove decisive in these high-stakes contests.
The Path to the Championship
With the semifinals set, what does the path to the national championship look like for each team?
For Duke and Penn State, their semifinal clash represents a battle between the tournament’s top seed and its lowest remaining seed. The winner will face either Virginia or Notre Dame in the championship game, setting up a potential ACC showdown or an opportunity for Penn State to make history.
Virginia and Notre Dame’s semifinal is essentially a play-in for an ACC team to reach the final. The victor will have momentum on their side but will need to quickly refocus for the championship match just two days later.
As the tournament reaches its climax, fans can expect intense, high-quality lacrosse from four of the nation’s top programs. The road to the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship promises thrilling action and potential history in the making.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Final Four is set.
Duke, Virginia, Notre Dame and Penn State will descend on Philadelphia and hope to leave as national champions. These results are not surprising, as the top three seeds all are still alive and joined by the fifth-seeded Nittany Lions.
None of the four finalists qualified for the Final Four last season, but that does not mean these aren’t heavyweight contenders. Duke entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall team for a reason, claiming the ACC Conference Championship and defeating Virginia twice during the season. Notre Dame was able to hand the Blue Devils one of their two losses, and Penn State was the Big Ten regular season champion.

Johns Hopkins will now head to Annapolis, Maryland, to face Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.
Michigan 15, Cornell 14
The high-scoring battle between Cornell and Michigan went down to the very lost shot of the afternoon in Ithaca. Peter Thompson scored in overtime to finish off a 15-14 Wolverines upset.
The Big Red led the Wolverines early, but a comeback completed by a behind-the-back goal from Jake Bonomi gave Michigan a one-goal advantage heading into the second half.

A go-ahead goal from Michael Boehm with 1:49 left on the clock looked like it might be enough to secure a Michigan victory, but Cornell’s Billy Coyle responded with under a minute left. The two teams headed to overtime deadlocked at 14-14.
In the extra period, Hunter Taylor turned aside a Cornell shot with his 16th save of the afternoon before Thompson scored. Michigan players poured onto the field to celebrate.

After the heartbreaking first-round loss, Cornell ends the season with an 11-4 record. Big Ten champion Michigan will now advance to face Duke in the quarterfinals.
Delaware 11, Duke 12
After coming into the game as the nation’s top seed, Duke might have expected an easy win. It did not get one Sunday.
By the second period, Delaware was leading by three and threatening the biggest upset of the 2023 tournament.
The Blue Devils rallied with five straight goals and went on to claim an 12-11 victory.

Initially, however, those five consecutive strikes did not earn Duke the lead for long. Delaware’s Tye Kurtz scored to tie the game three minutes later, sending the two teams into the fourth quarter deadlocked at nine apiece.
In the fourth, Brendan Powers added another goal for Delaware, giving the Fightin’ Blue Hens a 10-9 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Duke responded with another scoring flurry. Three straight tallies from Duke, including Brennan O’Neill’s 45th of the season, put the Blue Devils ahead by two in the final three minutes.
Delaware’s Mike Robinson scored to cut the lead to one, but Duke and goaltender William Helm (11 saves) hung on as the clock ticked down to victory.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will finish with a 13-5 record, while the ACC champions will prepare to face Michigan.
Princeton 12, Penn State 13
Each team held significant leads, and each team lost them.
In the end, it was a late goal by Kevin Winkoff that sent Penn State to the quarterfinals with a 13-12 win.
Princeton dominated early. Alex Slusher scored the team’s fifth consecutive goal five minutes into the second period, earning the Tigers a six-goal lead.
Penn State fought back to cut the lead to three by the half.
When the teams returned for the third period, Penn State took over. The Nittany Lions scored six goals, including two from Ethan Long, while Jack Fracyon made five saves to keep Princeton off the board for 17 straight minutes.

Penn State held a three-goal advantage with eight minutes remaining. That advantage turned out to be just as precarious as Princeton’s earlier lead.
Within two minutes, Coulter Mackesy, Jake Stevens and Alexander Vardaro scored to tie the game at 12 apiece with six minutes remaining. Makesy’s tally, his sixth of the night, broke a program record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game.

How to protect a wooden deck and facade?
Contents
The durability and beautiful appearance of wooden elements depend on regular care and maintenance. what, when and how to properly protect the wood from the outside.
Protection and finishing
Wood is a completely natural raw material and at the same time an excellent building material. However, untreated wood exposed to the weather is destroyed. moisture, fungi and pests.
Outdoors prone to graying and biological corrosion. To prevent this, it is enough to take care of wooden surfaces from time to time – the effect is guaranteed!
The method and amount of care depends on the type of wood. Wood of native species, especially coniferous, has low resistance and requires increased protection. Exotic wood contains a significant amount of tannins and oils, due to which it decomposes much more slowly. Under the influence of UV rays, its outer layer turns gray, but this does not significantly affect its durability. European species (especially native ones) are treated with impregnations that increase biological resistance (impregnations containing biocides and fungicides).
Protection with pigmenting agents will also be useful. For exotic species, which are naturally more resistant to biological corrosion, regular lubrication is sufficient. The choice of preservative should reflect the influence of factors prevailing in the given place and environment (high humidity, strong exposure to the sun or permanent shading, roofing or lack thereof).
Grease
Grease is the oldest known method of protecting wood surfaces. It is a proven method and the absolute basis of tree care. Wood oil is made from natural ingredients, so it is easy to apply and hassle-free. When properly applied, the product penetrates the wood and does not flake off. The oil does not form a film on the wood. Therefore, oiling should be repeated after washing off the current one. We apply new oil on top of the old one, without the need for pre-polishing the surface.
The oil brings out the natural beauty and texture of the wood while preserving its color (unless we choose a coloring oil). It protects the wood from moisture and ultraviolet rays, due to which the surface becomes gray. However, it does not protect against stubborn grease stains. Oil intended for wood care is applied by brush or roller (e.g. to a surface that has been cleaned of dirt. Traditional alkyd oils and modern water-based thin-film oils are currently available. Depending on the specific type and manufacturer, the oil properties of the oil are sufficient from one season up to 2) 3 years.
Stain
Another popular solution is stain. Stains stain wood for at least 4 years. Like oil, they penetrate deep into the wood and do not form a coating on its surface. Stain gives the wood its color and at the same time leaves the pattern of texture visible. We have a wide selection of colors and types. Anti-mould and biological corrosion inhibitors are added to many products. Stain primers recommended for absorbent native woods such as pine and fir are commercially available. To enhance the effect, staining can be combined with other impregnations.
Lacquer
Lacquers create a transparent (or semi-transparent) finish on wooden surfaces, which makes the grain pattern visible. Thus, the wood is protected from mechanical damage, moisture, UV radiation and biodegradation. You can choose from matte, semi-matt, satin, semi-gloss and full gloss lacquer. The color is selected depending on the type of wood. However, the most popular is a colorless varnish that does not affect the color. Varnish allows you to renew, protect and decorate wood for 4-7 years.
Oil Glaze
Glaze is designed to keep the grain of the wood visible. Oil glaze combines the properties of impregnation and varnish. It gives the wood color while maintaining the natural look of the wood structure. Creates a smooth and elastic coating, emphasizing graininess.
It is worth fixing the facade in this way. The glaze is applied to the wood with a brush in thin layers. Depending on the product used, it can also be painted with a roller, spray or dip. We do not paint damaged or dirty wood. The surface to be applied must be thoroughly cleaned. If the coating is in good condition, it only needs to be washed, rinsed and allowed to dry. Sanding with fine-grained sandpaper increases adhesion, but according to most manufacturers, this is not essential. says Lukasz Walczak, product manager at JAF Polska.
Glaze protects against adverse weather conditions and fungus. It is resistant to most contaminants. The pigments contained in the coloring preparations provide protection from UV rays. However, in the case of colorless products, this should be checked before purchase – not all provide additional protection from the sun. According to the declarations of oil stain manufacturers, wood conservation is carried out every 5-8 years.
