Many participants in this tournament have gone on to achieve great success in their lacrosse careers. Notable alumni include Sam Apuzzo (Long Island Top Guns, 2013) and Alice Mercer (CheckHers Elite, 2009), both of whom won championships at the Youth Nationals and later became gold medalists with the United States women’s national team.

The Mission and Values of USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals
At its core, the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals is more than just a tournament. It embodies a mission to identify and nurture the next generation of lacrosse talent while instilling important values that extend beyond the field.
Player Development and National Team Selection
What is the primary goal of the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals? The tournament serves as a crucial platform for identifying a pool of players in each graduation year from which future National Teams will be selected. It provides high-level training that benefits and enhances the development of student-athletes at the highest level.
Character and Integrity
Players selected for the Nationals teams are chosen not only for their lacrosse talent and skills but also for their character. The organization places a strong emphasis on moral integrity, expecting players to represent the values of their families, schools, churches, and communities.
Being a member of the Nationals requires players to pledge themselves to a higher standard of accountability. They are expected to strive to be better people off the field than they are players on it, setting an example through their conduct at all times.
Academic Excellence: A Core Principle
The USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals program recognizes the importance of academic achievement alongside athletic success. It emphasizes the challenging but essential balance between excelling in both sports and studies.
The Student-Athlete Standard
How does the program promote academic excellence? All Nationals student-athletes are required to maintain high academic standards to be eligible for the depth chart. The organization firmly believes that “All-Star players must be All-Star students.” This policy underscores the commitment to developing well-rounded individuals who can succeed both on and off the field.
Balancing Academics and Athletics
The program acknowledges the intense effort required to maintain the role of a student-athlete. It encourages participants to give constant attention to balancing their athletic and academic efforts, preparing them for the challenges they may face in college and beyond.
Conduct and Accountability: Pillars of the Program
The USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals program sets high standards for player conduct and accountability. These principles are fundamental to the program’s mission of developing not just skilled athletes, but responsible and respected members of society.
Code of Conduct
What is expected of players in terms of conduct? As student-athletes, participants are held to a higher standard. They are viewed as role models, leaders, mentors, and representatives of the Nationals Lacrosse program. The organization emphasizes that “All-Star players must also be All-Star people,” encouraging exemplary behavior both on and off the field.
Accountability and Commitment
The program stresses the importance of accountability for both players and parents. Attendance at all practices, exhibition games, and tournaments is mandatory. Failure to meet these commitments can result in a player’s position on the depth chart being affected, reinforcing the value of reliability and dedication.
The Privilege of Membership
Membership on a Nationals team is considered a privilege, not a right. This perspective instills a sense of honor and responsibility in the players, encouraging them to appreciate and make the most of the opportunity they’ve been given.
Expectations of Members
What qualities are Nationals players expected to demonstrate? Members are required to exhibit good sportsmanship, honesty, and integrity at all times. These qualities are seen as essential not just for success in lacrosse, but for success in life.
Representing Lacrosse Tradition
Nationals players are viewed as representatives of all aspects of the lacrosse experience. This includes upholding traditions, demonstrating sportsmanship, and engaging with the community. Players are expected to embody these values in their actions and thoughts, using them as a guide both on and off the field.
The USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals program challenges its players to push their limits, both in the classroom and on the field. It encourages them to strive for excellence in their grades and in their play, always drawing upon their inner reserves of heart and determination.
This holistic approach to player development sets the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals apart as more than just a tournament. It’s a program dedicated to nurturing well-rounded, high-achieving individuals who excel in sports, academics, and character.
As the 2022 tournament approaches, the excitement builds not just for the high-level competition that will be on display, but for the opportunity to witness the next generation of lacrosse stars as they take important steps in their athletic and personal development.
The record-breaking participation in this year’s event is a testament to the growing popularity of lacrosse and the reputation of the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals as a premier showcase for young talent. As 90 teams from across the nation converge on the DE Turf Sports Complex, they bring with them not just their skills and competitive spirit, but also the values and character that the Nationals program has instilled in them.
Whether they go on to become national team players, college athletes, or simply carry the lessons learned through lacrosse into their future endeavors, these young athletes are part of a proud tradition that extends far beyond the boundaries of the lacrosse field.
As the tournament unfolds, it will undoubtedly provide thrilling moments, showcase incredible talent, and perhaps even offer a glimpse of the future stars of the sport. But more importantly, it will continue to foster the development of young athletes who understand that true success comes not just from victory on the scoreboard, but from victory in character, academics, and personal growth.
The USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals stands as a shining example of how sports can be a vehicle for holistic development, preparing young athletes not just for success in their chosen sport, but for success in life. As the lacrosse community eagerly anticipates the start of this year’s tournament, it’s clear that the impact of this event will resonate far beyond the final whistle, shaping the future of the sport and the individuals who play it.

Teams from a dozen states will compete in three age groupings at the 2022 USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals in Frederica, Del.
A record 90 youth girls’ lacrosse teams are set to compete in the 2022 USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals from July 12-13 at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica, Del. The 90 programs represent club programs from 12 states and will compete in three age groupings — 13U, 14U and 15U.
The event, which dates to 2009, is in its second year of USA Lacrosse partnering with STEPS Lacrosse and Top of the Bay Sports to conduct the activities at the DE Turf Sports Complex. Located just 30 minutes from Delaware’s beaches, DE Turf is the largest all-synthetic sports complex in the Mid Atlantic.
“The 2022 USA Youth Nationals has an amazing field of teams and promises to be a great event showcasing talent from all over the country,” said Charlie Shoulberg, founder and CEO of STEPS Lacrosse. “In the wake of an historic world championship for the United States women’s national team, ideally the USA Youth Nationals inspires the next generation of players to represent the red, white, and blue!”
USA gold medalists Sam Apuzzo (Long Island Top Guns, 2013) and Alice Mercer (CheckHers Elite, 2009) were both championship winners at the USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals, which traces its roots to the US Lacrosse U15 National Championships in 2009.
For the second year in a row, Lax Sports Network will carry the 14U and 15U championship games live with the 14U game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13 and the 15U game to follow at 3 p.m.
Two champions from 2021 are returning to the tournament field this year. PRIDE 2026 Red (Va.) won the 13U championship last year and moves up to the 14U age bracket this season. Last year’s 14U champion, Yellow Jackets Spallina (N.Y.), will compete in the 15U division.
Both of those teams won nail biters in 2021 with PRIDE 2026 Red defeating Yellow Jackets Manning (N.Y.) 5-4 in overtime while Yellow Jackets Spallina won 5-4 over STEPS Elite 2025 Blue (N.J.) thanks in part to a save on a free position shot with under a minute to play.
Play gets underway on Tuesday, July 12 at 8 a.m. and a total of 135 pool play games are scheduled for the day with each team playing three games. Eight teams from each age group will advance to the quarterfinal round on Wednesday with the remaining teams each playing a consolation game.
