Types Of Men’s Lacrosse Shafts

It’s no secret lacrosse has come a long way with it’s popularity increasing each year. The sport’s growth over the years has created huge competition among manufactures to elevate technology with increased performance, the lacrosse shaft being a huge focus. Before getting into materials, some basic information is helpful when really understanding the different performance requirements by each position.

Men’s Lacrosse Shafts by Position & Size:

Attack; the offensive elite of the team utilize a 30 inch shaft designed to evade defenseman while offering ball control with precision passing and shooting. These shafts are often preferred to be ultra light weight by attack-men and sacrifice durability for speed.

Midfield; these work horse athletes also use a 30 inch shaft that must to do it all on the field just like them from offense to defense. Midfielders typically utilize a shaft designed for more all around performance with more durability then attack-men because of their defensive requirements as well.

Long Stick Middie or LSM; a hybrid between a midfielder and defenseman, the LSM operates with 60 inch shaft or “long pole” designed for defending against transitions during face offs. A lighter long pole is preferred by these transition players for added quickness and better ball control during clears.

Defense; the brutes of the team utilize a 60 inch shaft for aggressive checking capability and closing distance against quick offensive players. These shafts can take a beating over the course of a season and are susceptible to bending and denting if not properly selected by level of play. Generally a good balance of weight and durability is preferred by defensive players.

Goalies; the last line of defense for a team use a 30 – 40 inch shaft for wider hand placement but some do prefer the added quickness of an attack length shaft (30 inches). Stick Tips for Youth Defensive Players Using Long Poles – Primo Lacrosse

Today it’s great to see the many youth programs and travel teams that are available across the country. However, one major problem that exists that may be hindering your child’s development in the sport is stick length. 

Here at Primo, we are a big believer in stick skill development and not committing to the long stick position too soon.  Or if you do commit to this position, ensure that you are using a stick that is proportional to your size. 

This post lays out two actions you can take to ensure that you are getting the most out of your stick skill development at the defensive position. 

 1.  Cut your stick down to the appropriate size. 

A youth defenseman should not be using the same size full-length stick as 6’4″ PLL Defensemen Brodie Merrill. Brodie’s stick, for example, goes to about chin level for complete control when throwing checks, scooping up ground balls, and cradle, pass and shoot with ease. Lucky for him, using a full length 72″ is not an issue for him.  But for anyone not at this height you may want to consider cutting your stick down. 

What is the appropriate size you ask?  For many, it will depend on feel, but as a general guideline, the head of the stick should be no longer than the player’s height.  For even better control and to not instill poor habits, we recommend the height of the stick to be somewhere between the player’s chin and nose.  

If you’re worried about cutting the stick down too much, try cutting the shaft down in smaller increments and trying it out.  If it still feels too long, cut it down a little more until you find the sweet spot.

2. Invest in a short stick and practice with it.   

Stick skills at the youth level are the primary key to a youth player’s success and development.  If you can master stick skills with a short stick, you will be lightyears ahead of other defenders at the youth level when you transition to a long pole. 

Using Brodie Merrill as an example again, he didn’t even touch a long pole until around the age of 16 when he transitioned from midfield to the LSM role for Team Canada. 

He also had a great advantage of playing the indoor game growing up in Orangeville Ontario, which helped him hone his skills with a short stick and make it a much easier transition to the long pole.

Today, I will explain the “main” and “specialized” positions in depth, so you can know exactly which position does has which role on the field. After the explanations, I will list the names of the very best pro lacrosse players at their respective positions, so you can see what the position is like firsthand from elite lacrosse players.

Attackmen – The “forwards” of lacrosse. These players are in charge of scoring the ball.

Attackmen/Attack:

What does a midfielder do in lacrosse?

Midfielders are the most versatile players in lacrosse. They can play offense and defense and are used all over the lacrosse field. There are usually 3 midfielders on the field at once. 

It takes an immense amount of endurance to run up and down the field, so midfielders usually run in short “shifts” and substitute in and out often, just like you would see in a hockey game.

What does a defender do in lacrosse?

Defenders try to stop attackmen from scoring the ball. These lacrosse players have an extra long, 72 inch pole (compared to the 40 inch pole of a non-defenseman). There are usually 3 defenders on the field at once. 

Defenders work with their teammates and goalies to prevent an offense from scoring. They communicate the most of out of any player on the field and you can usually hear them from the sideline. 

In addition to defense, defenders are tasked with clearing the ball from the defensive side of the field in a safe and timely manner while the attackmen ride (play defense) on them.

Offensive vs. defensive middies styles of play

This style of midfield play requires excellent footwork to build on speed and agility.

Footwork and learning to use body position allows defensive middies to bush the ball carriers towards the sidelines or force opponents to use their weak hand for shots and passes – all with positioning.

Long stick vs short stick middies

Though becoming increasingly more common, long stick middies and short stick middies are still considered specialty positions.

Short stick middies play defense. 

Their job is often to transition the ball upfield and then these players get off the field, placed by offensive middies. 

Short stick middies aren’t there to take the ball away but to focus on containment.

Long stick middies, LSMs, often cover the opponent’s best offensive player but these players also require exceptional passing and shooting skills because they are also called on to feed other offensive players or, when necessary, take a shot. 

On defense, the LSM’s job IS to take the ball away and this position is key to turnovers and transitions.

What every LSM needs in a long pole

Midfield shafts vary a great deal in length. 

Middies with an offensive-minded style of play often sport shorter sticks, sometimes using sticks geared towards attackers, too, for enhanced shooting power.

Defense-minded middies also use slighter shorter poles, at least compared to LSM shafts, coming in at 52 inches in length.  

LSMs play with a specialized shaft that typically measures 60 inches in length.  

Lightweight design and strength are two critical factors for LSMs. 

If you play LSM, you’ll find yourself running up and down the field, so a lightweight stick is important. 

On the other hand, you can’t sacrifice durability and strength, both for defensive maneuvers and for dominating the ground ball game.

Flex is another important consideration for LSMs.
