Life at Full Throttle: You’ll find an explosion of flavors at Bank + Vine
Fresh, seasonal, and inventive are all words that come to mind when I think of Bank + Vine in downtown Wilkes-Barre. With a strong focus on farm-to-table and a flair for melding flavors, Chef Chad Gelso is hitting it out of the park with his unique menu.
The South Main Street restaurant has become my go-to for a leisurely Sunday brunch, where I can’t get enough of the Southern fried chicken and waffles with spicey honey glaze. The thick cut bacon and crispy potatoes with long hot and garlic aioli are also favorites.
Bank + Vine is in the historic building that was the former home of South Side Bank on the corner of South Main and Ross Streets. It was most recently the site of Le Manhattan Bistro. I’ve always loved the bright, open concept, and vaulted ceilings of this beautiful space. There’s also a small outdoor dining space at the rear of the building, which is where Chef Chad grows herbs and vegetables for his dishes, as well as limited sidewalk seating.
Chef Chad brings a wealth of culinary experience to Bank + Vine; from working in some of the best restaurants in Philadelphia, D.C., Chicago, and London, to competing on Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen. His visionary dishes are works of art.
Bank + Vine is not for the faint of heart. The dinner menu is inventive and unrivaled in our area with items such as smoked trout rillettes on house sourdough toast with green apple and sea salt; burgundy snail risotto with fennel and green butter; and roast lamb shoulder with pomegranate molasses and cucumber salad.
I’m a plain Jane eater, so I stick to the more traditional offerings, including the half roast chicken with onion farrotto, Italian sausage, and chicken jus; bacon and orzo mac & cheese; or my favorite — charcoal grilled carrots with lemon yogurt and Sicilian pistachio. I never imagined carrots could taste so good.
Googling ingredients is not uncommon for people I’ve dined with at Bank + Vine. Each dish is an explosion of flavors. My husband is a more adventurous eater and eager to try different things. That’s why Bank + Vine is one of his favorite restaurants. The cocktails are quite impressive and that’s more my area of expertise. With interesting names like Last Word, Bonnie + Clyde and The Arsonist, you can’t go wrong with any cocktail. I always start with Hummingbird Feet, a blend of Mishka Premium Vodka that has been infused with pink hummingbird pineapple in house for 3-weeks. There’s also a nice wine by the glass and bottle selection.
I always save room for dessert and Pastry Chef Kristen Fereck is the star of the dessert show at Bank + Vine. The milk chocolate budino with butterscotch caramel and house crème fraiche is a must try and was always a favorite of mine at Barbuzzo in Philadelphia. It’s rare to see it on a local menu, so don’t miss an opportunity to order it. Kristen’s desserts change seasonally and include items such as lemon meringue pie popsicle, olive oil cake with pineapple and coconut, and a selection of house made ice cream and sorbet.
The team at Bank + Vine, including General Manager Erin Crofchick, is doing a great job of keeping things fresh and interesting on the local dining scene. This includes themed dinners and other events, such as the Seafood Boil & Brews event on Wednesday, July 28. In fact, the Seafood Boil & Brews has been such a hit, they are considering expanding into August.
Also scheduled for the coming months is a Middle Eastern-themed dinner and a Boozy High Tea Saturday Brunch. You can learn more about upcoming events and view the full brunch and dinner menu at bank-vine. com. If you’re in the mood for a culinary adventure, head to Bank + Vine and you won’t be disappointed.

Alexander Venedyukhin, dxdt.ru: entertaining online magazine
The SHA-1 hash function has been considered insufficiently strong for use in SSL certificate signatures for several years. Now there is a process of ousting this function from valid certificates, but so far there are many such certificates, they are found all the time. Using SHA-1 leads to “unexpected” effects in browsers. Let’s look at one of the examples – the site nic.ru.
On the server where nic is located.ru, a valid Extended Validation (EV) certificate is installed. However, if you go to the site using the Chrome browser (42.0.2311.90 – the current version at the time of writing), running in the Windows operating system (version 8.1, for example), then a warning appears in the browser address bar that the site uses outdated technologies security. It looks like this:
Naturally, a correctly installed EV certificate is expected to have a different effect, displaying a “trusted” address bar. This happens in Internet Explorer 10, on the same test machine:
And if you use the Mozilla Firefox browser, the effect is also positive:
However, the positive effect in Firefox has a different basis than the case of IE. What’s going on, why do browsers behave this way?
Let’s look at the set of certificates returned by the server. There are three certificates here: server and two intermediate; here are their properties specified in the Subject (s, subject of certification) and Issuer (i, certifier) fields:
0.
s: O = JSC ‘RU-CENTER’ / OU = Project Department / CN = www.nic.ru
i: O = GeoTrust Inc./CN=GeoTrust EV SSL CA – G41.
s: O = GeoTrust Inc./CN=GeoTrust EV SSL CA – G4
i: O = GeoTrust Inc./CN=GeoTrust Primary Certification Authority2.
s: O = GeoTrust Inc./CN=GeoTrust Primary Certification Authority
i: O = Equifax / OU = Equifax Secure Certificate Authority
(The name nic.ru without www. Is specified in the extension of the SAN certificate, so the addresses in the screenshots are correct.)
Certificate number 2 (issued for GeoTrust Primary Certification Authority) is problematic because it uses SHA-1 as part of the signature generation algorithm. According to Google Chrome policy, if the certificate chain ( excluding root ) includes at least one signed using SHA-1, then a warning is displayed in the address bar. Let’s look at the chain:
Everything converges – the intermediate certificate with SHA-1 enters the chain immediately after the root.(Note, by the way, that the root is designated GeoTrust, although the root certificate itself contains the name Equifax, as you can see if you look inside its fields. These are traces of marketing: the business of selling Equifax digital certificates was sold to a company that provides these services under the GeoTrust brand. ) IE uses the same set of roots, however, the policy of this browser allows even EV certificates to be signed on a chain that includes SHA-1, so everything is fine here.
But Firefox uses its own set of roots, so the validation chain is different here:
Firefox contains a trusted root designated GeoTrust Primary Certification Authority from which the GeoTrust EV SSL CA-G4 intermediate certificate is signed. That is, the same certificates are already lined up in a chain that does not contain SHA-1, so this situation cannot raise a warning, even if such a warning were supported by Firefox. Google Chrome for Linux works in a similar way – it also has a built-in root that avoids the use of an intermediate certificate with SHA-1.
Above, I mentioned that the presence of SHA-1 is not counted for root certificates (built into browsers). Why? The reason is that root certificates are self-signed (by definition), and the browser does not trust the signature, but the public key associated with the root certificate and the name of the certification authority that is specified in the certificate. Since the signature does not play a key role, then the use of SHA-1 in the root certificate can be neglected: it does not affect the level of trust in any way.
What do websites need to do? You need to reissue a certificate on a chain that does not use SHA-1.
