Major Coaching Moves Shake Up College Lacrosse Landscape
The college lacrosse coaching carousel continues to spin as several high-profile programs have announced changes at the helm. Here are some of the most significant recent moves:
- Manhattan appointed Doug Sage as interim head coach for the 2024 season
- John Odierna left his position as Manhattan head coach to become defensive coordinator at Syracuse
- Chris Ryan departed Mercyhurst (DII) to take over as head coach at Mount St. Mary’s
- Dave Metzbower joined Matt Brown’s staff at Denver as offensive coordinator after leaving North Carolina
These coaching changes are likely to have ripple effects across multiple conferences as programs adjust to new leadership and strategic approaches. The coming months will reveal how these moves impact recruiting, player development, and on-field performance.
Top Overachieving and Underachieving Teams of 2023
Every lacrosse season sees some teams exceed expectations while others fall short of their goals. Here’s a look at some of the notable overachievers and underachievers from 2023:
Overachievers
- Michigan
- Penn State
- Utah
- Army
- Johns Hopkins
Underachievers
- Ohio State
- Rutgers
- North Carolina
- Brown
- Harvard
- Jacksonville
What factors contributed to these teams’ performances? For overachievers, strong leadership, breakout individual performances, and favorable schedules often play a role. Underachieving teams may have struggled with injuries, chemistry issues, or simply failing to live up to lofty preseason expectations.
Recruiting Updates: Harvard and Navy Land Key Flips
The recruiting landscape is always in flux, with commitments changing as players reassess their options. Recently, both Harvard and Navy secured important flips in the 2024 recruiting class. These developments could significantly impact the competitive balance in their respective conferences.
Why do recruits sometimes change their commitments? Factors can include coaching changes, shifts in academic interests, or simply a better fit with a different program. For Harvard and Navy, landing these flips represents a coup that could pay dividends on the field in coming seasons.
PLL All-Star Game Recap: Veterans Triumph Over Rising Stars

The game took place at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on the University of Louisville campus, drawing a capacity crowd.
Standout performances from Manny and Neumann propelled the Veterans to victory. The high-scoring affair showcased the elite talent in professional lacrosse and provided fans with an entertaining spectacle.

These conference reviews provide valuable context for understanding the broader trends and competitive dynamics in college lacrosse. They also set the stage for anticipating how teams might fare in the upcoming 2024 season.
Looking Ahead: Preparing for the 2024 Season
As summer winds down, attention is already turning to the 2024 college lacrosse season. Teams are beginning to return to campus, kicking off their preparations for the challenges ahead.
What key storylines should fans watch for in 2024? Here are a few possibilities:
- Impact of coaching changes at high-profile programs
- Continued evolution of playing styles and tactics
- Emergence of new powerhouse programs
- Transfer portal effects on team rosters and competitiveness
- Potential conference realignment discussions
As always, the offseason will be filled with speculation and anticipation. Preseason rankings, watch lists, and predictions will soon start to emerge, fueling debates among fans and analysts alike.
The Growing Influence of Analytics in Lacrosse
One trend that continues to shape the sport at all levels is the increased use of advanced analytics. From college programs to professional leagues, data-driven decision making is becoming more prevalent.
How are analytics changing lacrosse? Some key areas of impact include:
- Player evaluation and recruitment
- In-game strategy and substitution patterns
- Training and conditioning regimens
- Fan engagement and broadcast enhancements
As technology improves and more data becomes available, expect to see analytics play an even larger role in how lacrosse is played, coached, and consumed by fans.
Expanding Lacrosse’s Global Footprint
While lacrosse has long been popular in North America, efforts to grow the sport internationally continue to gain momentum. Recent developments in global lacrosse include:
- Increased participation in European countries
- Growing youth programs in Asia and Africa
- More international players joining U.S. college programs
- Expansion of professional leagues beyond North America
What challenges does lacrosse face in its global expansion? Language barriers, lack of established infrastructure, and competition from more entrenched sports are all obstacles to overcome. However, the sport’s fast-paced nature and unique blend of skills make it appealing to new audiences around the world.
As lacrosse’s international presence grows, it could lead to exciting developments such as more competitive World Championships and potentially even Olympic inclusion in the future.
Innovations in Lacrosse Equipment and Technology
The world of lacrosse equipment continues to evolve, with manufacturers constantly seeking ways to improve performance, safety, and player comfort. Some recent innovations include:
- Lightweight yet durable stick materials
- Advanced helmet designs for better protection
- Customizable padding and protective gear
- Smart technology integration for training and performance tracking
How do these innovations impact the game? Improved equipment can lead to faster play, reduced injury risk, and new tactical possibilities. However, there’s also an ongoing debate about maintaining the sport’s traditional aspects while embracing technological advancements.
As equipment continues to evolve, governing bodies will need to carefully consider how to regulate these innovations to ensure fair play and maintain the integrity of the sport.
The Rise of Lacrosse-Specific Training and Conditioning
As lacrosse becomes increasingly competitive at all levels, players and coaches are placing greater emphasis on sport-specific training and conditioning. This trend encompasses various aspects:
- Position-specific skill development programs
- Lacrosse-focused strength and conditioning routines
- Mental preparation and sports psychology techniques
- Nutrition plans tailored for lacrosse players
Why is specialized training becoming more important in lacrosse? The sport’s unique demands require a combination of endurance, explosiveness, hand-eye coordination, and tactical awareness. Generic athletic training alone is often insufficient to develop these skills to their fullest potential.
As the science of sports performance continues to advance, expect to see even more sophisticated and tailored approaches to lacrosse training emerge in the coming years.
Addressing Diversity and Inclusion in Lacrosse
Like many sports, lacrosse has faced scrutiny regarding issues of diversity and inclusion. Various organizations and initiatives are working to make the sport more accessible and welcoming to all. Some key focus areas include:
- Expanding youth programs in underserved communities
- Increasing representation in coaching and administrative roles
- Promoting women’s lacrosse at all levels
- Celebrating the sport’s Native American roots
What challenges remain in making lacrosse more diverse and inclusive? Cost barriers, limited exposure in certain geographic areas, and lingering stereotypes about who plays lacrosse are all obstacles to overcome. However, many in the lacrosse community are committed to broadening the sport’s appeal and ensuring opportunities for all who wish to participate.
As these efforts continue, lacrosse has the potential to become a more vibrant and diverse community, enriching the sport for players and fans alike.
The Impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) on College Lacrosse
The introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies has significantly altered the landscape of college sports, including lacrosse. This change allows student-athletes to profit from their personal brand while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. Some effects on lacrosse include:
- Individual sponsorship deals for high-profile players
- Increased social media presence and personal branding efforts
- Potential influence on recruiting and transfer decisions
- New revenue streams for athletes in a non-revenue sport
How might NIL opportunities shape the future of college lacrosse? While it’s still early, there’s potential for NIL to help grow the sport’s profile and provide additional incentives for top athletes to choose lacrosse. However, it also raises questions about competitive balance and the potential for exploitation.
As the NIL era unfolds, college lacrosse programs and governing bodies will need to navigate this new terrain carefully to ensure the sport’s integrity while allowing athletes to benefit from their talents and popularity.
Sustainability Initiatives in Lacrosse
As environmental concerns become increasingly prominent, the lacrosse community is taking steps to promote sustainability. Various initiatives are underway at different levels of the sport:
- Eco-friendly equipment manufacturing processes
- Sustainable field management practices
- Waste reduction efforts at lacrosse events
- Carbon offset programs for team travel
Why is sustainability important for lacrosse? Beyond the general environmental benefits, sustainable practices can help reduce costs, improve public image, and ensure the long-term viability of playing facilities. Additionally, many lacrosse players and fans are passionate about environmental issues, making sustainability a natural fit for the sport’s culture.
As awareness grows, expect to see more lacrosse organizations implementing green initiatives and promoting environmental stewardship within the community.
The Evolution of Lacrosse Media and Coverage
The landscape of lacrosse media and coverage continues to evolve, driven by technological advancements and changing consumer preferences. Some notable trends include:
- Increased streaming options for games and events
- Growth of lacrosse-specific podcasts and video content
- Enhanced use of social media for news and highlights
- Integration of advanced statistics and analytics in broadcasts
How is changing media coverage impacting the sport? Greater accessibility through streaming and online content is helping to grow the fan base and increase exposure for players and teams. Meanwhile, the rise of analytics-driven coverage is providing fans with deeper insights into the game.
As media consumption habits continue to shift, expect lacrosse coverage to adapt and innovate, potentially opening up new revenue streams and marketing opportunities for the sport.
In conclusion, the world of lacrosse is dynamic and ever-changing, with developments in coaching, recruiting, professional leagues, and various other aspects of the sport. From the college ranks to the international stage, lacrosse continues to evolve and grow, presenting exciting opportunities and challenges for players, coaches, and fans alike. As we look ahead to the 2024 season and beyond, the sport’s future appears bright, with potential for further expansion, innovation, and competitive excitement.

Third NHL lacrosse goal of the season! – Ice hockey news
Today Edmonton defeated Nashville 4:2 in the NHL regular season match at home. Leon Draisaitel scored a double in the home team, but the German’s game was eclipsed by Philip Forsberg’s puck – the Swedish striker scored a lacrosse goal.
Philip Forsberg / photo: Frederick Breedon/Getty Images
The Nashville forward scored in the middle of the first period, equalizing the score. Forsberg picked up the puck in the corner of someone else’s zone, rode it out of the gate, deftly put it on the stick hook and threw it into the goal. The whole attack took two or three seconds. At the same time, no one tried to take the puck from the Swedish striker. Thanks to this, such beauty has turned out.
Immediately after the match, Forsberg stated that the goal did not surprise him. Much more important that the team lost. You can understand the player’s emotions: Nashville is fighting for the playoffs in the Western Conference, if the team won, the team would be only three points behind the eighth place. At the same time, Nashville would have two more games in hand. But now they are already five points behind.
Lacrosse goals are a rarity in hockey. For a long time, this trick was called a goal in the style of Mikael Granlund – the forward of the Finnish national team scored against Russia in this way at the 2011 World Cup. And in the NHL before this season, no one scored like that at all.
However, this season there was some kind of anomaly – this is the third lacrosse goal in a short period of the regular season. Before Forsberg, the Russian Andrey Svechnikov scored twice in this way, so now the lacrosse goal is associated not with Granlund, but with the 19-year-old Russian striker of Carolina. In an interview with our publication, Svechnikov told in detail how to do such a trick.
Forsberg is the leader and star of Nashville. The 25-year-old striker is the team’s second scorer after defender Roman Yosi. In 38 matches this season, he scored 31 (15+16) points. Forsberg has been playing for Nashville throughout his NHL career: in 2012, the Predators selected him in the NHL Entry Draft under the 11th number, and in 2013 he made his debut for the team.
