The Importance of Lacrosse Helmets in Men’s Lacrosse
Lacrosse helmets are a critical piece of protective equipment in men’s lacrosse, a sport known for its aggressive play and potential for injuries. Unlike women’s lacrosse, which has less stringent equipment requirements, men’s lacrosse mandates the use of helmets along with shoulder pads and gloves.
The necessity for helmets stems from the physical nature of the game, where players use rigid sticks and hard balls that can cause serious head injuries if proper protection is not worn. As a result, lacrosse helmets are subject to rigorous safety controls and testing to ensure they meet the stringent requirements for player protection.
Why are lacrosse helmets essential?
- Protection against stick impacts
- Shielding from high-velocity ball strikes
- Reducing the risk of head injuries during collisions
- Compliance with official game regulations
Key Features of High-Quality Lacrosse Helmets
Modern lacrosse helmets are engineered with advanced materials and design features to provide optimal protection and comfort. Understanding these key elements can help players and coaches make informed decisions when selecting the right helmet.
What materials are used in lacrosse helmet construction?
Lacrosse helmets are typically made from durable, high-impact resistant plastics. These materials are chosen for their ability to withstand the rigors of the game while providing excellent protection. The outer shell is designed to absorb and distribute the force of impacts, reducing the risk of injury to the player’s head.
How is padding integrated into lacrosse helmets?
The interior of lacrosse helmets features specialized padding systems. These pads are often modular, allowing for customization to fit different head shapes and sizes. The padding serves multiple purposes:
- Absorbing shock from impacts
- Providing a comfortable fit
- Allowing for proper ventilation
- Wicking away sweat to keep players cool

Several leading brands dominate the lacrosse helmet market, each offering unique features and technologies. Let’s explore some of the most popular options available to players.

Notable features of the STX Rival include:
- Integrated air pump for customizable fit

Warrior Helmets
Warrior is a well-respected brand in the lacrosse community, known for producing high-quality equipment. Their BURN series of helmets is particularly popular among players at all levels.
Professional lacrosse player Grant Ament endorses the Warrior BURN, stating, “My helmet to go with is the Warrior BURN.” This endorsement speaks to the quality and performance of Warrior helmets in competitive play.
Customization Options for Lacrosse Helmets
Many players seek to personalize their lacrosse helmets, both for style and team identity. Manufacturers have responded to this demand by offering various customization options.
How can players customize their lacrosse helmets?
Customization options typically include:
- Choice of base helmet color
- Interchangeable visors in different colors
- Customizable chin straps
- Team logo or player number decals
- Custom paint jobs (for some models)
For example, Cascade offers a design-your-own helmet service, allowing players to create a truly unique look. This service enables customization of various helmet components, from the basic color to the mask and chin strap.
Ensuring Proper Fit and Attachment of Lacrosse Helmets
The effectiveness of a lacrosse helmet in preventing injuries is heavily dependent on its fit and secure attachment. A poorly fitted helmet can compromise protection and may even come off during play, leaving the player vulnerable to injury.
How should a lacrosse helmet fit?
A properly fitted lacrosse helmet should:
- Sit snugly on the head without excessive movement
- Cover the entire forehead down to about an inch above the eyebrows
- Have minimal space between the chin and chin strap when fastened
- Not impede vision or hearing
Many modern helmets feature adjustable padding systems that allow players to customize the fit to their head shape. Some advanced models, like the STX Rival, even incorporate air pump systems for precise adjustments.
Why is secure attachment crucial?
A securely attached helmet is less likely to shift or come off during fast movements or physical challenges. This ensures continuous protection throughout the game. Players should always check their chin straps before play and adjust as necessary to maintain a secure fit.
Safety Standards and Certifications for Lacrosse Helmets
Lacrosse helmets sold in reputable stores, such as the Captain-Lax online shop, must meet specific safety standards and certifications. These requirements ensure that the helmets provide adequate protection for players.
What safety standards apply to lacrosse helmets?
In North America, lacrosse helmets must meet the NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) standard. This rigorous testing protocol includes:
- Impact resistance tests
- Retention system strength evaluations
- Face mask protection assessments
- Helmet stability checks
For the European market, helmets must comply with relevant EN (European Norm) standards. These standards ensure that helmets sold in Europe meet similar safety requirements to their North American counterparts.
How often should lacrosse helmets be recertified?
NOCSAE recommends that lacrosse helmets be recertified every 12 months or after significant impact. This recertification process ensures that the helmet continues to provide adequate protection over time, as materials can degrade or become damaged with use.
Comparing Lacrosse Helmets to Other Sports Helmets
While lacrosse helmets share some similarities with helmets used in other sports, they have unique features tailored to the specific needs of the game.
How do lacrosse helmets differ from football helmets?
Lacrosse helmets and football helmets both provide head protection, but there are key differences:
- Lacrosse helmets are generally lighter and more ventilated
- Football helmets often have more extensive facial protection
- Lacrosse helmets typically have a more streamlined profile
- Football helmets are designed for more frequent, direct impacts
What sets lacrosse helmets apart from hockey helmets?
While lacrosse and ice hockey are both stick-and-ball sports, their helmets have distinct characteristics:
- Lacrosse helmets offer more comprehensive facial protection
- Hockey helmets often have a two-piece design for easier adjustment
- Lacrosse helmets are typically heavier due to additional protective features
- Hockey helmets may have different impact absorption technologies
Maintaining and Caring for Lacrosse Helmets
Proper maintenance of lacrosse helmets is crucial for ensuring their longevity and continued protective capabilities. Regular care can help preserve the helmet’s structural integrity and hygiene.
How should players clean their lacrosse helmets?
To maintain a lacrosse helmet:
- Clean the exterior with mild soap and water
- Disinfect the interior padding regularly
- Allow the helmet to air dry completely after cleaning
- Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents
- Check for any signs of damage or wear regularly
When should a lacrosse helmet be replaced?
Lacrosse helmets should be replaced:
- After a significant impact or collision
- When visible cracks or damage appear
- If the padding becomes compressed or deteriorated
- Every 3-5 years, depending on usage and manufacturer recommendations
Regular inspection and timely replacement of helmets are essential for maintaining optimal protection throughout a player’s career.

Lacrosse Helmets
at Captain-Lax
Men’s lacrosse is one of the more aggressive versions of the game and is therefore subject to stricter rules, also in terms of protective equipment, than women’s lacrosse. That means that in addition to Shoulder Pads and Lacrosse Gloves, a Lacrosse Helmet must be worn too. Since serious injuries can occur in lacrosse due to the rigidity of the complete sticks and the impact of the ball, specialised lacrosse helmets have to withstand a lot and are therefore also subject to strict safety controls and tests. Accordingly, only helmets certified for the European market are sold in the Captain-Lax online shop, so that they are sure to meet the various safety requirements and offer perfect protection.
Lacrosse helmets are made of special hard plastic, which has very good resilience and can therefore protect from hits to the head by lacrosse sticks. All of the helmets have padding on the inside, consisting of individual, movable and exchangeable pads, enabling simple adjustments to the individual head shape, so that the desired result of a comfortable and firm fit of the lacrosse helmet on the head is achieved. In addition to the right fit, the helmet should also be attached as securely as possible, otherwise it could come off too easily with faster head movements or in challenges, leaving you dangerously unprotected.
Lacrosse helmets in the Captain-Lax online shop are mostly single-colour, but some are equipped with an easily exchangeable visor and chin, which are also available in the Captain-Lax online shop in a wide variety of trendy colours. The lacrosse helmet can thus be given a stylish new look in no time at all, without any problem. Your own favourite colour is certainly included in the range, and will soon be making your lacrosse helmet stand out. Differently-coloured chin straps are also available, offering a flash of colour, together with the secure protection you need.
A helmet in men’s lacrosse is an important protective article and, like helmets in motor sports or cycling, offers specialised protection against various injuries to the head area, which must be a good thing! A helmet should therefore always be worn during training as well as in a game, but all responsible lacrosse players know that, of course! Once you have your Lacrosse Helmet, nothing can stand in the way of the next lacrosse game – the individually combinable colours of the shell, chin and visor can also express your own personality.

“Fell very low in the eyes.” How a special operation in Ukraine collapsed the quotes of Russia’s main hope in the NHL For a long time, he was considered the favorite of the 2023 draft, but in the end he did not even enter the top 5. About the reasons for what happened – in the material “RBC Sport”
Matvey Michkov
(Photo: Global Look Press)
Russian forward Matvey Michkov was one of the most talked about players in the 2023 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft long before it began. From the age of 14, he began to beat all sorts of records in youth leagues. From the age of 16, they began to talk about the young forward as a future star.
The Youth Olympic Games 2020 brought him wide popularity. In Lausanne, Switzerland, he became the most productive player of the tournament with 14 points (9+5) in four games. In the same season, as part of the junior team of Lokomotiv, he scored 109 points (70 + 39) in 26 games, becoming the top scorer of the season. After such a successful season, the forward with a scandal moved from Lokomotiv to SKA, breaking the contract with the Yaroslavl club.
A year later, he broke the record for performance in the Youth Hockey League (MHL), which belonged to the current NHL star Nikita Kucherov. At that time, Michkov was 16 years old, while in the MHL mostly 18-20-year-olds play.

Meanwhile, Canadian forward Connor Bedard has been under the same scrutiny since the age of 13. In 2021, they met at the Junior World Championship, which experts considered as a confrontation between the main favorites of the 2023 draft – Bedard vs. Michkov.
The Russian eventually became the best sniper, scorer and MVP of the tournament, while Bedard won gold. Canada defeated Russia in the final, with both players scoring goals and assists, although more was expected of them.
In 2021, Michkov made his debut with SKA. In the second match, he was promoted to the first link. But he scored his first points in the third game, where he scored a double and an assist. The forward was the first player born in 2004 to take to the ice in a meeting of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

In November 2021, at the age of 16 years 11 months and two days, he made his debut for the national team against Finland, becoming the youngest player in the history of the Russian/USSR national teams.
Two days later, Michkov scored a lacrosse-style goal against Sweden, becoming the youngest scorer in Russia/USSR (16 years 11 months and four days). For many years this title was held by Alexander Ovechkin (17 years 11 months).
Michkov fell out of the top 3 a few months before the start of the draft. In recent days, it has been reported that he will be taken as number five by the Montreal Canadiens. However, in the end, he went seventh to the Philadelphia Flyers, without even becoming the first among the Russians.
Since the 2022/23 season, the carefree period of Michkov’s career has ended. He was ousted from the SKA, and after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the prospects for an NHL player became less clear.
From the first half of 2022, talk about choosing Michkov as the first number stopped. This is largely due to the fact that Russia has been excluded from almost all international competitions, and the junior and youth world championships are the main showcase in the hockey world.

The importance of participating in these tournaments was also noted by the assistant general manager of the Washington Capitals, Ross Mahone. “There are a lot of similarities between Michkov and Bedard, including dimensions. Both are dynamic snipers. It is a pity that Michkov could not play at the World Youth Championship and show himself the way Bedard did, but such is the situation, ”he said.
According to Montreal GM (fifth pick in the draft) Kent Hughes, one of the reasons Michkov was turned down was the inability to watch games live with the player. “There are so many factors influencing the decision, one of which is that we never got to see him play [live],” Hughes said. “We rely a lot on video, but not exclusively on video. Undoubtedly, there were many factors, but one of them was definitely that we did not get to see him play.
According to leading NHL expert Bob McKenzie, a number of club owners have placed a ban on Michkov’s selection. In particular, Montreal General Manager Kent Hughes does not hide the fact that “there is a geopolitical aspect in the situation with Russian players.”
Buffalo Sabers General Manager (13) Kevin Adams, speaking of Michkov, said, “If you’re just blind to what’s going on in the world, I think you’re making mistakes. ” “You have to be aware of everything and take it all into account,” he added.
The general manager of one of the NHL teams in an anonymous poll by The Athletic also named the geopolitical factor among the reasons why he would refuse to select Michkov. “I would have let someone else draft him,” the team leader said. “With his skating, his one-sided play and his demeanor, it would be too much of a risk for me to take him early in the draft. And that’s before I get to the obvious things – the situation in Ukraine and his contract [with the KHL club].”
San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier also noted that the club had “some concerns” about Michkov. He did not elaborate on what concerns he was talking about. “He has a special talent on the ice, there is no doubt about that. Super proficient, can do things other players can’t. But there are some things that we weren’t happy with,” Grier said.

(Photo: Global Look Press)
In addition to the geopolitical situation, almost all managers called Michkov’s current contract with SKA one of the main disadvantages. The player’s current agreement with SKA expires in 2026. By this time he will be only 21 years old. But no one can guarantee that Michkov will move to the NHL after the expiration of the contract. Therefore, choosing a player with a KHL contract in the top 5 draft picks is a big risk.
The geopolitical factor again comes to the fore in this issue, because after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the NHL suspended relations with the KHL, and therefore the memorandum on mutual respect for the players’ contracts was also suspended.
In addition, the story of the goalkeeper of the Russian national team Ivan Fedorov, who was detained in the summer of 2022 before leaving for the Philadelphia Flyers and sent to the army for military service, is still fresh.
Michkov’s behavior also played an important role. In particular, the Russian striker refused interviews with almost all clubs and participation in the combine (physical training tests before the draft). These events are important in all North American leagues.
“Michkov could be called the biggest mystery in this draft,” said Canadian TSN correspondent and hockey insider Chris Johnston before the start.
Michkov’s talent is obvious to scouts who have seen him, but he hasn’t been tested in Buffalo and his association with NHL clubs has been limited, Johnston said.
“A lot of people in the league think he’s going to fall somewhere in the fifth or eighth position. That is, we are talking about Montreal with the fifth pick, Arizona with the sixth, Philadelphia with the seventh and Washington with the eighth, he added. “It is these teams that will have to decide what to do with Michkov.”
In turn, Andrey Nikolishin, scout for the Washington Capitals in Russia, spoke about Michkov’s “disrespectful attitude” towards people. “For me, by skill, he is the first or second choice (in the draft. — RBC ). But in terms of character, in relation to teammates, coaching staff, management, fans, the person has now fallen very low in the eyes of all scouts, all managers, ”he said.
