Lacrosse Unlimited Launching Give & Grow, Pledging to Donate Shoulder Pads to Programs in Need
Commotio Cordis is a rare but potentially fatal injury that results from a blow to the chest, and in lacrosse, it’s often caused by contact via a shot or pass.
The injury has received a lot of attention this spring, first because of the implementation of a new NOCSAE standard for goalie chest protectors that went into effect this year, and new shoulder pads, which goes into effect Jan, 1, 2022.
More seriously, however, the issue was brought to life in April when Loyola Blakefield (Md.) freshman Peter Laake was hit in the chest with a shot and had to be resuscitated by an AED on the field. His was truly an amazing story, and brought a lot of needed attention to the new chest protector and shoulder pad issue.
Lacrosse Unlimited, and the Lacrosse Unlimited Foundation, announced a program this week to provide shoulder pads to players or programs in need. Check out the release below.
Official Press Release
EDGEWOOD, N.Y. — Lacrosse Unlimited, the world’s largest purveyor of lacrosse gear, is proud to be launching its shoulder pad “Give and Grow” program. For every 25 shoulder pads purchased through Lacrosse Unlimited, they will donate one shoulder pad back to a program in need. This aligns with Lacrosse Unlimited’s core values and The Lacrosse Unlimited Foundation’s mission to make a difference in the community through the sport of lacrosse.
This program coincides with the roll out by NOCSAE (National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment) of new shoulder pad safety rules, aimed to prevent Commotio Cordis, a rare but extremely dangerous injury that can cause sudden death. Starting January of 2022, all shoulder pads must be NOCSAE approved. As players transition to the new equipment, Lacrosse Unlimited will GIVE back to players who need it most & help GROW the game in all communities by ensuring no players get left behind in this important safety transition.

Lacrosse Unlimited carries a large selection of NOCSAE approved shoulder pads from STX, Maverik and Warrior Lacrosse both in stores and online. Join the Give & Grow program by getting your gear at your local Lacrosse Unlimited store or visit www.LacrosseUnlimited.com.
“Player safety is such critical part of the game of Lacrosse, and with our Give & Grow program, we can help ensure that all Lacrosse programs have access to the safest protective gear in the market” says Lacrosse Unlimited founder Joe DeSimone.

Lacrosse Unlimited takes regional approach
Talk about novices going into business.
In 1990 Joseph DeSimone was just out of college incorporating his retail lacrosse equipment business. He and his brother Sam, who had bankrolled the operation with a home equity loan, had some ideas for a name.
“First it was Long Island Lacrosse and then we thought maybe Total Lacrosse,” DeSimone said. “The lawyer asked if we wanted to be limited, and we looked at each other and said, ‘Never. We want to be unlimited.”
Out of the mouths of babes.
But DeSimone and brother Sam, along with partner Mike DeSimone (no relation) were far from babes-in-the-woods when it came to lacrosse. Joseph played at the University of New Haven and Mike played in national championships when he was with Maryland’s Towson University. The three built the empire called Lacrosse Unlimited over two decades from their one 1,400-square-foot space in a Hauppauge strip mall.
Now there are seven Long Island locations and 12 more in upstate New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. In January, Lacrosse Unlimited will open in Vienna, Va.
From their 30,000-square-foot headquarters in Hauppauge, the DeSimones ship helmets, sticks, gloves and everything else it takes to suit up to every state in the union and as far afield as Tokyo.
How did they do it? Part of the success came from filling a need. Mike DeSimone remembers that when he was a star at Ward Melville High School the only way to get equipment was ordering out of a black-and-white catalog.
Team DeSimone also decided to cater only to a small but targeted and enthusiastic audience. You won’t find a soccer ball or a baseball bat in any Lacrosse Unlimited store. Players, coaches and athletic directors know when they walk in they won’t have to deal with someone who can’t find the business end of the stick.
And they did some on-the-road research, learning how to merchandise the equipment. Before opening their first store, the DeSimones went to Maryland, a lacrosse hotbed like the Island. “We went stores and the equipment was lying around in boxes,” Joseph said. “You’d go in once and never go back. You have to present this equipment the right way.”
They then marketed themselves by papering sporting events with flyers and hitting up every coach and club they could find.
Like every other aspect of the retail economy, the sporting goods category is taking a hit. Statistics from the National Sporting Goods Association reveal sales of equipment and footwear have grown only 3 percent over the last couple of years and sports clothing has grown only 2 percent.
The NSGA reports this year that Americans spent $32 million on lacrosse equipment. A sign of the sport’s growth in popularity is that four years ago the trade association didn’t even list lacrosse sales.
Once confined to small pockets around the country such as the Island, prep schools in New England and Maryland, the ancient Native American game picked up and refined by French settlers is finding fertile soil in other parts of the country.
It’s springing up in Orange County, Calif. Even in football country, places like Tennessee, you’ll find boys and girls cradling the ball and practicing give-and-go moves.
According to the National Sports Marketing Network, more than 425,000 players participated in organized lacrosse last year, up an astonishing 68 percent since 2000.
But the sport is still largely unknown and unplayed in America. Compare lacrosse equipment sales with sales of archery or snowboarding equipment – $383 and 306 million respectively this year – and you see there’s no comparison at all.
Lacrosse Unlimited is still filling a need these days by pushing lacrosse apparel, which has become a hot trend for casual wear.
“You have to realize this isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle,” Joseph said.
How a Lacrosse Store Provided Safe Haven for 9/11 Grievers
To recognize the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we are sharing several stories throughout this week that capture the lives and legacies of the people, families and communities impacted most.
Jimmy Butler evocatively remembers the day.
Navigating his way through the often-brutal Long Island traffic, Butler drove from his Bellport home to Manhasset, where he managed the local Lacrosse Unlimited store. Howard Stern’s deep voice permeated the eerie silence of what became an ominous drive to work.
As Butler rounded a curve on the Northern State Parkway headed west, smoke billowed from over the tree line. Stern, providing play-by-play, reported that one plane, then another, had struck the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers.
“Once I arrived at work, it was just the unknown of everything,” Butler recalled 20 years later. “The second plane, the buildings going down, you’re just trying to process it all. Then it starts with, ‘Who was there?’ The phones start going, checking in.”
The ensuing hours were like that of a nightmare. Butler went through his rolodex of lacrosse people and remembered hearing “hours and hours of nothing.” The Manhasset train station, where Long Islanders head in droves for their morning commutes, is a mere 200 feet from Lacrosse Unlimited. Butler vividly remembers seeing people come back far too early from work, covered in ash and soot.
The days and weeks that followed were somber for a prideful community like Manhasset. Butler stumbles as he recalls the funerals and wakes, one after another, that rocked the small town on Long Island’s North Shore.
An adopted member of the Manhasset community, Butler became part of the healing process.
“He was one of the first people to reach out to me,” said Adam Kohart, who lost his brother, Ryan, a former North Carolina captain from Garden City, in the terrorist attack. “The lacrosse community is very small and tight, and he was always there for me.”

“Lacrosse Unlimited was the escape, in some regard, to all the funerals.
”
Manhasset’s Lacrosse Unlimited store was a “rite of passage” for young lacrosse players, as Butler puts it. Children from around town rode their bikes up Plaindome Road, stopped for pizza at local spots like Gino’s or Villa Milano, and visited Butler while he managed the store from 1989-2006.
The boutique shop was perfectly positioned in the town. Passersby would be tantalized by samples of custom sticks or freshly strung heads in the window. A variety of dye styles and heads adorned the right wall, the same wall on which professional players who’d stroll through would sign their names. It wasn’t uncommon for Mark Millon, Paul Gait, Vinnie Sombrotto or other lacrosse icons to stop by, after all.
The register and a strip of counterspace were just past the sticks. Gloves and pads were past there.
Ten feet away on the opposite wall were the shirts and apparel. On the back wall, which was at most 40 feet away from the front door, were the helmets. It was a lacrosse enthusiast’s haven.
“People in Manhasset love lacrosse,” said John Gagliardi, a former pro and member of the U.S. men’s national team. “It seems to be the common denominator and connector of everything. No matter your color, religion, race or gender — everyone loves lacrosse.
“Lacrosse Unlimited was the escape, in some regard, to all the funerals.”
Future NCAA and professional standouts frequented the store. A young Jimmy Bitter — “a little knucklehead kid,” as Butler quipped — would come into the store as a young teen before a productive career at North Carolina.
Butler’s knowledge of the community and relationships with its residents made him an integral part of the post-9/11 recovery.
When those same kids came into the store after the tragedy, Butler could sense when one was struggling. He’d make it his mission to make his or her day a little brighter.
“By that point, you know the children who were a little more at risk, who need a pat on the back,” he said. “I’d give them little jobs around the store. They looked like they were working, so they became rock stars in the town.”
Like so many others in town, Frank Coughlin knew what it was like to lose a loved one. His brother, Tim, worked at Cantor Fitzgerald in the North Tower — just like Ryan Kohart — and lost his life. Their two brothers — Dennis, who worked in the South Tower, and Rob, who worked in the World Financial Center across the street — both escaped.
“The way in which it seems to touch us all … the bell tolled in some way for all of us that day,” Frank Coughlin said.
At the time, Frank Coughlin ran the sixth-grade team for Manhasset PAL. That team wore “Cogs” patches to honor his brother. He said Lacrosse Unlimited was a “community clubhouse” for the kids.
“Jimmy was a class act during that time with an ability to work with adults and children,” he said. “He appreciated how Manhasset had been shaken. He went about his business providing a safe haven.”
While Coughlin, Bill Miller and Harry Baugher were providing a safe haven of their own with Manhasset PAL, another community six miles away was also doing its best to cope. Like Manhasset, Garden City suffered unimaginable losses. At the time, Butler’s Lacrosse Unlimited store was even the place to go for Garden City lacrosse enthusiasts. The town now boasts its own store.
Garden City and Manhasset — perhaps due to proximity, perhaps due to history — are bitter rivals. And not just in lacrosse.
“It’s the community. It’s the school,” Butler said. “It’s deep-rooted in all of them in everything that goes on.”

How to sink an aircraft carrier | The military-industrial courier weekly
Heavy anti-ship missiles (ASM) have a number of important advantages that lighter and simpler missiles do not have. The balanced development of anti-ship missiles of light and heavy classes will significantly increase the capabilities of our fleet in the fight against the most powerful formations of a potential enemy, primarily aircraft carriers.
The military-technical policy in this area has recently been focused on equipping combat surface ships, submarines and attack aircraft with relatively small missile weapons. The development of complexes with heavy anti-ship missiles has been curtailed, although Basalt, Vulcan and Granit are still in service.Long-range aviation (and naval missile-carrying in the event of its reconstruction, which is undoubtedly a necessary step) has the Kh-22 missile system as the main anti-ship weapon. However, all these systems are relatively outdated, as they were developed in the 60s and 70s. New anti-ship missiles of the heavy class are not currently being created and are not foreseen in the future.
“The death of the destroyer“ Sheffield ”from the anti-ship missile system“ Exocet ”during the war for the Falkland Islands indicates rather the ineffectiveness of the crew’s struggle for survivability, rather than the power of the missile warhead, which did not even explode.”
Onyx possesses the recently adopted long-range anti-ship missile systems. The launch weight is about 3000 kilograms (with a transport and launch container – 3900 kg), the warhead is about 200 kilograms. The homing head is capable of tracking cruiser-class surface targets at a distance of up to 75 kilometers and has two flight path options. The first – at high altitudes up to 14-15 thousand meters with a decrease to 3-10 meters in the target area. This achieves a maximum firing range of 300 kilometers. The second option provides for flight on the march and in the target area at extremely low altitudes: from 3–10 meters in the target area to 10–15 meters on the marching sector. However, the maximum firing range in this case is reduced to 120 kilometers. The speed of the missile is supersonic – from 2.0 M on the cruising section to 2.5 M in the target area. When flying along a combined trajectory, the missile initially captures the target at a high-altitude segment, after which it turns off the radar station and descends to extremely low altitudes. As a result, in the middle segment, the flight is carried out under the lower boundary of the air defense zone. Later, after the anti-ship missile system reaches the range of the radio horizon, the homing head (GOS) turns on again, captures and accompanies the target at which the missile is guided. In this relatively short section (no more than 20-30 km), the supersonic speed of the Onyx makes it difficult to defeat it by short-range air defense systems, as well as jamming the homing head. This anti-ship missile system is universal and can be used from surface ships and submarines, as well as from aircraft and coastal rocket launchers.
Another long-range system is the Caliber family. These are subsonic missiles with a maximum firing range of 300 kilometers. The flight to the target is carried out at an extremely low altitude. The energy of the seeker makes it possible to capture cruiser-type targets for auto-tracking at a distance of up to 65 kilometers. However, the actual range will be limited by the radio horizon (30 – 40 km maximum, depending on the size of the target and its height above the water surface). The warhead of the rocket is about 400 kilograms. This versatile system allows missiles to be used both from surface ships and submarines, and from coastal installations.
In addition to long-range missile systems, there are also short-range systems providing firing up to 50-130 kilometers. Of these, the most common is the RK X-35. This is a subsonic missile with a low-altitude trajectory (10–20 m), which, with a starting weight of 600 kilograms, has a warhead weighing about 150 kilograms.
Many small or low-power
All these missile systems appeared in accordance with the concept of creating an inexpensive and high-density missile salvo – a kind of “rocket swarm” that allows you to oversupply the air defense system of a ship formation or a separate enemy ship and thereby guarantee its defeat by several missiles. At the same time, it is believed that although a relatively small warhead of each of the missiles is incapable of guaranteed to disable or destroy an enemy ship, the possibility of placing a large number of missiles on a carrier and using a large number of missiles in a salvo will allow the target to inflict the required damage. Such missiles must be relatively simple, which ensures their low cost and, accordingly, reduces the cost of a salvo.
Previously, the development of anti-ship missiles, especially long-range missiles, was based on a different concept. It was based on the idea of the possibility of destroying or incapacitating a large ship when even one missile hits. Accordingly, its warhead should be powerful enough – 500-700 kilograms or more. These were the differences between Basalt, Vulkan, Granit and the Soviet-designed X-22. It is clear that it is impossible to place a large number of large missiles on a carrier. Consequently, they are required to have high selectivity and additional capabilities to overcome the air defense of a ship formation. And this means that it is necessary to place sufficiently powerful radar homing heads on them, allowing them to detect and track sea targets at a distance of 100 kilometers or more, highly effective onboard recognition systems in order to highlight the main object in the enemy’s ship warrant. At the same time, the GOS should have high noise immunity, and the missile itself, if possible, have its own electronic warfare means to break through the enemy’s air defense. That is, the missiles are both heavy and expensive.”Basalt”, “Volcano” and “Granite” have a starting weight of 6,000 to 8,000 kilograms and the corresponding dimensions. But their firing range significantly exceeds that of the newest Onyx and Caliber, ranging from 500 kilometers for Basalt and Granit to 700 kilometers for Vulcan.
So is the concept of a heavy, powerful, and therefore large and expensive anti-ship missile outdated? Or is the refusal to develop this direction premature?
Advantages and disadvantages
Undoubtedly, the strong point of the “rocket swarm” concept is the ability to accommodate a large number of missiles on one carrier (even relatively small in size). This significantly increases the flexibility of use: it allows you to create a reserve, more rationally distribute work among targets, and avoid the allocation of excess damaging potential to weakly protected objects.
When modern ships are equipped with powerful multi-channel air defense systems, the “rocket swarm” concept provides a high-density salvo that is guaranteed to overcome the air defense system of even heavily defended formations, such as American aircraft carrier groups.
The cheapness of such weapons makes it possible to produce them in large quantities, to create in a short time reserves sufficient for the conduct of hostilities. The advantage is the simplicity of both the missiles themselves and the complex as a whole. This promotes universalization, allows the complexes to be deployed on ships of all main classes and even on civilian ships in the event of mobilization. The strike capabilities of the fleet are significantly increased.
The weaknesses of the “rocket swarm” concept include, first of all, the fact that strict weight and size restrictions exclude the deployment of powerful radars and other systems on missiles, in particular, electronic intelligence, high-performance on-board computers, which would make it possible to identify the main target as accurately as possible.Onyx will fly to a maximum range of 300 kilometers for about 10 minutes, and Caliber for more than 20 minutes. Target distribution is carried out on board the carrier according to data received from external sources. After launch, the correction of the flight task is impossible. With a relatively high probability, the enemy, by indirect and direct signs, will reveal the preparation for the strike and the moment of the volley. During the flight time of missiles, the enemy’s ship formation will be able to rebuild the order and create a jamming situation. Aiming at the main target will be significantly difficult – the missiles will be distributed among all ships.
The short target acquisition range of low-altitude and low-speed anti-ship missiles creates the danger of the target going beyond the viewing area of their homing head (GOS) when firing at maximum distances. It is for this reason that the American “Tomahok” provides for the possibility of additional target search by snake movement in the area of its intended location when firing at the maximum range, when target designation is issued with low accuracy. A salvo of “Caliber” missiles when firing at maximum range in conditions of enemy movement on a tactical zigzag and when issuing target designation from sources with low accuracy in determining the target location can pass the designated target with a relatively high probability (up to 0.2-0.4).
A warhead weighing about 200 kilograms is capable of reliably incapacitating ships no higher than the frigate class. To destroy the cruiser will require at least three or four hits. This is evidenced by the experience of the Second World War (for the sinking of a ship of this class, an average of three or four hits of 250 kg aerial bombs were required). The death of the destroyer “Sheffield” from being hit by anti-ship missiles “Exocet” during the war for the Falkland Islands is atypical and indicates rather the ineffectiveness of the crew’s struggle for survivability, rather than the power of the missile’s warhead, which did not even explode: the fire caused by the rocket engine could not be extinguished. To disable an American aircraft carrier such missiles will require significantly more – 10-15. This is due to the fact that the area of destruction from the explosion by the warhead is relatively small and does not allow to reliably hit the vital parts of a large ship. Its failure or death will follow not so much due to the explosion of the warheads of missiles, but from the subsequent secondary destruction, which in turn is opposed by a highly effective system for fighting for the survivability of a modern aircraft carrier.
Finally, the target capture range of 75-80 kilometers, achieved at high altitudes of the missile’s flight, will not help to avoid being hit by their air defense system of modern ships, whose anti-aircraft fire weapons (ZOS) can hit such air targets at a distance of 120-180 kilometers or more. … This means that the salvo missiles will be destroyed at the most vulnerable part of the trajectory.
These disadvantages are absent in heavy anti-ship missiles. Among their main strengths, first of all, is the possibility of placing on board powerful, highly efficient radio-electronic equipment (RES).With a target acquisition range of more than 100–120 kilometers, the probability of an enemy order going beyond the viewing strip of the seeker of salvo missiles is practically excluded, even with low target designation accuracy.
Less stringent weight and size restrictions allow them to place a seeker on them with a target acquisition range that exceeds the capabilities of existing and future anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM), that is, 150-200 kilometers, and thereby avoid damage at the high-altitude part of the flight path. This also allows the placement of its own active electronic warfare means on a heavy anti-ship missile system, which significantly reduce the effectiveness of the enemy’s AES.At the same time, information exchange between salvo missiles is possible, as well as further automatic selection of their battle order, optimal from the point of view of overcoming air defense. We are talking about an active confrontation with the enemy’s electronic warfare and a radical increase in the reliability of the release of a salvo of the main target by missiles in an automatic mode. Thus, heavy anti-ship missiles have a significantly higher selectivity for hitting designated targets than light missiles.
Low requirements for the target designation system create favorable conditions for the development of extra-long-range anti-ship missile systems – 1000-1200 kilometers or more, which makes it possible to bring their carriers beyond the effective range of carrier-based aircraft and anti-submarine defense of aircraft carrier groups and formations.Accordingly, the combat stability of the carriers of such weapons increases. Reducing the requirements for the target designation system is very important for the Russian Navy, especially in the distant sea and ocean areas.
The warhead of heavy anti-ship missiles weighing more than 700-800 kilograms is guaranteed to penetrate the system of constructive protection and ensure the destruction of vital elements in the depths of the hull of the largest warships. This means that in order to disable or sink an aircraft carrier, two or three or four or five such missiles will need to be hit.
The disadvantages include the high cost, limited onboard set of the carrier and, as a consequence, the complexity of creating a high-density salvo.
Develop both classes
Analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the two conceptual approaches to the development of anti-ship weapons suggests that they are complementary. The weaknesses of one become the strengths of the other. Thus, the low selectivity of light anti-ship missiles (in conditions of a limited target designation system), combined with the possibility of creating a high-density salvo, makes it possible to count on a significant weakening of the air defense system of the enemy’s ship formation. At the same time, the relatively small destructive force of the warheads of such missiles is quite consistent with the targets of the strike – cruisers, destroyers and frigates from the guarding of the main forces.
After weakening the enemy’s air defense system, when a high-density salvo is no longer required, but reliable, with a high degree of selectivity ensuring the destruction of the main ships of the order is needed, heavy anti-ship missiles come into play, which can solve the problem of disabling or destroying nuclear ships, in particular aircraft carriers.
That is, the expediency of the integrated use of different classes of anti-ship weapons is seen, which will significantly increase its effectiveness in comparison with the use of any one class.
The concept of heavy anti-ship missiles was abandoned early. It makes sense not to rely only on the light class and return to work on the heavy-type anti-ship missile weapons. The balanced development of both directions will significantly increase the capabilities of our fleet in the fight against the most powerful naval formations of a potential enemy, primarily aircraft carriers.

ruler or tape measure
Correct spelling: “ruler” , with vowels “and” at the root. Check word: “line” .
Rule
The word “ruler” contains the root “lin”, the suffix “k” and the ending “a”. The second syllable is stressed, so the vowel “and” in the first syllable was in a weak position. In an unstressed position, the vowel “and” can be pronounced as “e”. To check an unstressed vowel at the root, you need to choose the same root word or change the form of the word so that the stress falls on the dubious vowel. In the unstressed position, the same letter is written as in the stress test word. You can check the word “ruler” with the noun “line”. The vowel “and” became stressed, as evidenced by its spelling in the word “ruler”.

Artistic means of expression | The site of the teacher of the Russian language and literature
TRACKS (Greek.tropos – turn, turn of speech) – words or turns of speech in a figurative, allegorical meaning. Trails are an important element of artistic thinking. Types of tropes: metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, hyperbole, litota, etc.
STYLISTIC FIGURES – turns of speech used to enhance the expressiveness (expressiveness) of an utterance: anaphora, epiphora, ellipse, antithesis, parallelism, gradation, inversion, etc.
HYPERBOLA (Greek hyperbole – exaggeration) – a kind of trail based on exaggeration (“rivers of blood”, “sea of laughter”).By means of hyperbole, the author enhances the desired impression or emphasizes what he glorifies and what makes fun of. Hyperbole is found already in the ancient epic among different peoples, in particular in Russian epics.
In the Russian liter, NV Gogol, Saltykov-Shchedrin, and especially
V. Mayakovsky (“I”, “Napoleon”, “150,000,000”) willingly resorted to hyperbole. In poetic speech, hyperbole is often intertwined with other artistic means (metaphors, personifications, comparisons, etc.). The opposite is litota.
LITOTA (Greek litotes – simplicity) – a trope opposite to hyperbole; figurative expression, turnover, which contains an artistic understatement of the magnitude, strength, meaning of the depicted object or phenomenon. There is litota in folk tales: “a boy with a finger”, “a hut on chicken legs”, “a little man with a fingernail.”
The second name of litota is meiosis. The opposite of litote is hyperbole.
N. Gogol often addressed the littote:
“Such a small mouth that it cannot miss more than two pieces” N.Gogol
METAPHORA (Greek metaphora – transfer) is a trope, a hidden figurative comparison, the transfer of the properties of one object or phenomenon to another on the basis of common features (“work is in full swing”, “forest of hands”, “dark personality”, “stone heart”…). In metaphor, in contrast to comparison, the words “as”, “as if”, “as if” are omitted, but implied.
The nineteenth century, iron,
Truly a cruel age!
Thee into the darkness of the night, starless
Careless man thrown!
A.Block
Metaphors are formed according to the principle of personification (“water runs”), reification (“nerves of steel”), distraction (“field of activity”), etc. Various parts of speech can act as a metaphor: a verb, a noun, adjective. The metaphor gives the speech exceptional expressiveness:
A bee creeps into each carnation of lilac

Nikitin’s dismissal is a classic from our hockey bosses. He brought and kept CSKA at the top level, and now the club is jumping into obscurity – Hockey news
It is a pity that the resignation is not for the sake of the national team.
Hi. Today I spent too much time under the sun and still suspect that the joke with the dismissal of Nikitin – not even in the middle of the contract, but in the first third – it seems to me that I overheated in the sun and swam.
And I, typing these words, hope that the editor will just laugh at me and leave this text in drafts – in the folder “Nikita has a sunstroke” (there is already a decent amount).
Because – oh, heavens – I don’t even know what in this news about CSKA pins me more to the floor: that Nikitin was fired or that Fedorov was appointed instead.
Well, seriously, I’m already used to choosing words for the most awkward decisions of the hockey bosses of Holy Russia, but even here I feel somehow embarrassed (by the way, subscribe to my telegram, where I constantly discuss such decisions).
I am not even ready to assume that this is somehow connected with the national team: Nikitin would have been taken there in some more elegant way, and Sergei Fedorov would hardly have entered the scheme then. After all, Fedorov is clearly not a forced replacement, which would have happened in the event of an emergency call of the head coach to SKA / FHR.
By the way, it’s even a pity if it’s not about the national team. One current general manager a couple of years ago shared his opinion that Igor Nikitin was on his way there – and I agreed with that. Nikitin’s career in recent years has been directed precisely at a post in the national team – he is a rare modern coach of ours, about whom you can definitely say: “I deserve it.”
Specific style? Undoubtedly. Not very clear if it is suitable for short saturated distances? Undoubtedly. But he deserved it – too, of course. If, of course, we consider working with the national team as an acknowledgment of the coach’s value and his path (and this is exactly what we are considering so far).
As a result – there is such a moment – it may turn out that Nikitin’s resignation is somehow connected with Ice Hockey of Russia. Or maybe with the mood of an important CSKA boss (look at the lists, choose anyone). Or maybe with some kind of armchair fights that take place regularly in sports – however, nobody talks about them later. One thing I am sure for sure: this double decision, dismissal / appointment, is definitely not connected with the hockey, which CSKA played in recent years, and with the global results of Nikitin over four years of work. Even with the most recent result.
Somewhere in the spring, I spied on the footballers a cool, as it seems to me, little thing: to calculate the percentage of victories of a coach in a particular team and, among other things, to evaluate his work on this basis.
Having learned about the rearrangement in CSKA, I hastily threw three such tables: in fact, Nikitin in CSKA, Kvartalnov in CSKA and, for comparison, the mega-successful Znarok in SKA.
Igor Nikitin’s four years as head coach of CSKA included three finals (they did not finish the last playoffs) and one victory.
Kvartalnov’s three years at CSKA: re-restart of the army car, restarted by Rosneft in the early 2010s, one final, defeat in the quarterfinals by Lokomotiv.
Enchanting (without irony) two seasons of Oleg Znarka in the base club: the Gagarin Cup on a swoop, the strongest squad in the history of the KHL, a grandiose path in the first playoffs with only two defeats in 18 matches.
Before us are three grandiose coaching paths – the percentage of victories of Znark in the 2017 playoffs and Nikitin in the 2018/19 regular season is impressive even taking into account the circumstances (money, administrative resources and the difference in lineups).
Let’s remember how and how they ended. Dmitry Kvartalnov (let’s start with the worst coach in terms of winning percentage) by the third season, it seemed, had exhausted the arsenal of tricks with which he was trying to get to victories. His dismissal looked more or less logical – and was justified by being knocked out of the second round.
His appointment was confusing: he immediately got a job at Lokomotiv, to which he, in fact, lost in the semifinals of the West.
Take Oleg Znark, the best coach on this list in terms of winning percentage (and, I think, the entire KHL, there is simply no reason to check it yet). I look at his statistics – and we have no questions. I look at the 2018 playoff grid and I have no questions: losing to CSKA in the conference finals is normal. I looked at that hockey and I had no questions: SKA, if you round up, played better.
But Znark was fired – and immediately from the national team, although he took Olympic gold. The same gold that the federation still, three years later, fights off any questions about the results – because it is still the only official gold of the FHR since 2015.
Igor Nikitin went almost the same cool way with his CSKA and every time, beating SKA, he went to the Gagarin Cup final. Why was he fired? What for? No answer. It is only obvious that with him CSKA would be the favorite of the tournament next year.
Obviously, not a single living soul in the world suspects what Sergei Fedorov is like in the role of head coach.
Obviously, this decision is not the result of analysis, analysis of the team’s games and a strategic plan. This is just a classic hockey game: to show ambition (the final is not enough anymore), to show temper or purely hardware things (Fedorov is on the CSKA Supervisory Board).
It’s not about hockey at all. For SKA, the dismissal of Znarka led to two consecutive seasons without a final and a loss of position in the fight against CSKA.
Red Army, be equal.

What is the origin of the word “steel”?
Steel has a long and rich history, with the earliest known steel weapons dating back 4000 years. Until the Industrial Revolution, steel was produced in relatively small quantities in the Iberian Peninsula (now Spain and Portugal) by the Roman military and the Chinese to make weapons such as blades and swords.
Although it has been used for thousands of years, it has not always been called steel.
Definition of steel
Steel by definition today is commercial iron alloyed with carbon and other elements, the content of which is usually less than 1%. Raw iron is naturally a weak material, however the addition of other elements such as manganese, niobium or vanadium, imparts strength and strength. In large-scale steelmaking, metallurgical coal (or coking coal) is used to reduce iron ore and inject carbon to improve the quality of steel.
Where did the word “steel” come from?
The noun steel comes from the Proto-Germanic adjective stakhlijan , which in English means “made of steel”, which is also associated with the term stakhla , which means “to stand firmly.” The root of the word stakhla – stak which means “to stand, to set or to be firm.” The word “steel” would probably mean “that which is stable”, which is appropriate for a substance that is strong and durable.Currently, there are no corresponding words from the Germanic language, except for those that are probably derived or borrowed from many Germanic dialects.
The most notable use of the word “steel” as an Old English adjective from c. 1200 from stylen, is pronounced “steel en.” The phrase “to make it hard or as strong as steel,” was used as far back as the 1580s.
Steel began to permeate the Western vernacular after the Industrial Revolution with steel wool products available since 1896.In the early 20 years and century, the first stainless steel drum was created on the island of Trinidad. with a name that was approved in 1952.

What is morphemic analysis – linguistics 2021
In the process of morphemic parsing of a word, an analysis of morphemes is carried out, their components: which morphemes are present in the word how a word is formed with their help. Morpheme analysis allows you to better understand the structure of a given word and associated words, as well as analyze and learn to apply in practice the mechanisms of word formation in the Russian language.
Morpheme – the minimum indivisible significant part of the word, used to form new words and forms. Morphemic analysis allows you to analyze the composition and purpose of morphemes in the composition of a word.
The order of morphemic analysis
1. Morphemic analysis is carried out according to the form of the word present in the text of the task. The word is written without changes, it is determined to which part of speech it belongs, this part of speech is changeable or unchanged.
2. If the word is mutable, the declension or end of the word is determined. To determine the ending, you need to change the word (taking into account the declension, conjugation). It must be remembered that the ending is a variable part of a word, unchanging parts of speech such as an adverb, an adverb, some nouns and adjectives, as well as official parts of speech cannot have an end!
3. The base of the word is determined and highlighted – a part of the word without ending.
4. The root of the word is highlighted. By the way, cognate (related) words are selected. It should be remembered that the roots can be of the same name, and you need to carefully monitor what exactly the word has. Thus, the word “braid” in the meaning of “female hairstyle” cannot be designated as related words such as “mow” and “mow”. In this sense, the root words are “braid”, “pigtail” and even “space”.
5. Allocate other derivational and forming parts of the word: prefixes (prefixes), suffixes (affixes and postfixes), connecting vowels (interfixes). With each of them, words are selected that are formed in the same way.
Difference between morpheme parsing and word parsing in composition
Some sources indicate that morphemic parsing and word parsing are identical in composition. But this is not the case. There are a number of significant differences between the two analyzes.
– For morphemic parsing, the word form is taken without changes; the original wordform is used for parsing in the composition. For example, for the verb “made” the initial form is “to do”.
– In the case of derivational analysis, it is indicated whether the word is a derivative, i.e. educated from another or not, this is not required for morphemic analysis.
– In the case of derivational analysis, it is necessary to indicate the way the word is formed, and not to choose words formed using the same prefixes and suffixes as in the morpheme.
Human pollution can be a source of fertilizer for the oceans. This is not good |
Science
Scientists now understand how carbon and methane emissions from our cars, livestock and electricity use are contributing to dramatic changes in our climate by contributing to the greenhouse effect. But they are just beginning to unravel the effects of some of the other pollutants we produce. For example, according to a new study, iron emissions from burning coal and smelting steel may actually help oceans thrive and absorb more atmospheric carbon.
If this sounds good, it is not. Researchers warn that when we reduce our iron oxide emissions – which ultimately we must do to protect humans and animals from inflammation and other adverse health effects – it will require even more drastic cuts in pollution to avoid the effects of climate change. …
Iron is a vital nutrient for almost all living things. Humans need it to make new blood cells, and many plants need it for photosynthesis. However, iron is relatively rare in the open ocean as it mostly comes in the form of soil particles carried away from land. For the trillions of phytoplankton in Earth’s oceans, iron is the “limiting nutrient,” meaning that the amount available is the natural limiting factor for these creatures. (To prove this, scientists dumped 64 square kilometers of iron in the open ocean in the early 1990s and quickly noticed a doubling of phytoplankton biomass.)
Some scientists have suggested taking advantage of this fact through geoengineering or deliberately interfering with the climate system with technology. Like forests on land, phytoplankton in the ocean serves as a “carbon sink” because it absorbs carbon dioxide and then carries that carbon with it into the deep ocean when it dies. Consequently, adding more iron to the seas could potentially make these scavengers even more effective at capturing the carbon that humans release into the atmosphere, these proponents say.
But new research suggests that humans are already – albeit inadvertently – geoengineering this process, according to a study published today in Science Advances journal .
Despite its pledges to halt the rise in carbon emissions by 2030, China remains the world’s largest coal producer and producer and the largest steel producer. Along with carbon, steel smelting and burning coal give off iron particles that are easily carried away by the wind.Scientists have speculated for years that all of these emissions could fertilize the oceans with extra iron, fueling the growth of phytoplankton populations, says Zongbo Shi, an environmental scientist at the University of Birmingham in England.
These iron particles are iron oxides formed during combustion, so they are insoluble and cannot be absorbed by plankton on their own. However, according to Shi, acid gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide are released along with these iron oxide particles. These gases can react with iron oxide molecules as they are transported through the atmosphere to form soluble forms of iron.
“No one can prove it conclusively,” says Shi. He and his team set out to fix this, and in 2013, researchers carefully collected aerosol samples from the air from a boat in the Yellow Sea between China and South Korea. They then used sophisticated electron microscopes and other detection methods to analyze the composition of these particles.
Researchers found that the particles contained sulfates containing soluble iron. Shi said that since there is no natural source of iron sulfates in the atmosphere, they concluded that these particles must have originated from anthropogenic emissions. “We have proven that this process does exist,” Shi says.
Philip Boyd, a marine biogeochemist at the University of Tasmania who was not involved in the study, says the study provides “compelling evidence” that these atmospheric interactions could make the discarded iron available to ocean life. However, scientists are “halfway” when it comes to seeing what effect artificial iron fertilization actually has, says Boyd, a leading researcher on ocean-climate interactions and geoengineering.
East China is rich in iron soil and is close to the iron-rich Gobi Desert, Boyd says, which means there is a lot of natural iron that could potentially populate the oceans. According to Boyd, determining how much iron in the air comes from natural sources rather than industrial sources will be an “acid test” of how much human emissions have on life.
Shi agrees that it is very important to understand the human contribution to this process. He then plans to collect more data on the atmosphere and oceans to build a detailed model of human iron fertilization over a century, which could also predict the impact of our 150-year-old human industry on atmospheric carbon levels.
It could be that according to Shi, the iron we gave off helped reduce the level of carbon in the atmosphere. “If the amount of soluble iron doubles [in the oceans],” Shi says, referring to a 2011 study, “then you can expect about 30 [additional] gigatons of carbon dioxide to be absorbed by the ocean over a century.”
Reducing iron deposition into the oceans by reducing emissions could complicate efforts to reduce the greenhouse effect, he says “There will be less phytoplankton, less carbon dioxide is absorbed by the ocean,” Shi says.
However, Shi is wary of proposals to dump iron into the oceans to eliminate the greenhouse effect. “Geoengineering is a highly controversial topic,” he notes, referring to the fierce debate over the abduction of large-scale human intervention and its many potentially unintended consequences. As for artificial fertilization with iron, biologists fear that it could lead to widespread algal blooms, which could suppress oxygen from the water for other ocean creatures and lead to as-yet-unknown effects.
It’s safe to say that we can’t continue to spew iron at our current rate, Shi says, because it has been shown to cause inflammation in people who inhale it and can harm other living things.People might think that “by releasing iron, it might be doing us a favor,” he says. But while they can help the planet, at least in the short term, these “particles are always not very good” for human health, he adds.

Choice of Words: Steal versus Steel
Like many homophones, the words “steal” and “steel” sound the same, but differ in meaning. But these terms can be very tricky, as they are used by both nouns and verbs. To make sure you always use the right word in the right place, check out our guide on the difference between steal and steel.
Steal
Steal is primarily a verb (ie.E. Word of Action). Its main meaning is “to take and leave something without the permission of the owner.” For example, if someone had to steal to feed themselves, we could say:
He was so poor that he had to steal food to eat.
The simple past tense of steal is to steal, and the past participle is to steal.
A less common use of the verb “to steal” means “to make something unnoticed.”For example, we could say something like:
She stole 90,716 glances at his notebook while he was not looking.
In this context, “stole” simply means that the gaze was discreet.
Meanwhile, as a noun, we use the word “steal” to mean “something acquired at a very low price.” So if someone made a deal, we could say:
That new TV that you bought for sale was completely stolen 90,715 !

This noun use of the word “steal” is mostly informal, but much less common.
Steel (a metal made of iron and carbon)
As a noun, “steel” usually refers to an alloy of iron and carbon. It is very difficult and relatively cheap to make, which is why people use it for everything from cutlery and guitar strings to vehicles and large construction projects.
The Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing is currently the largest steel structure in the world.
Based on the strength of metal, some people use the word “steel” as a verb meaning “prepare for something unpleasant or difficult”:
I myself need steel before I pass judgment.
The past tense of this verb using “steel” means “hardened,” not “stole,” as above.
Summary: Steal or Steel?
Although these words sound the same, they refer to different things:
- Steal is basically a verb meaning “to take something without permission”, but it can also mean “to do something unnoticed” …As a noun, it can mean “purchased something at a very low price,” but this is rather informal.
- Steel is a noun for a strong metal made of iron and carbon. However, as a verb it can also mean “prepare for something difficult”.
The fact that both words have different meanings can complicate these terms. But if you remember that st eel wire often goes to r eel , you can avoid confusion. And for additional confidence in the correctness of your spelling, we have professional proofreaders available 24/7.
