Selecting the Right Lacrosse Travel Team
When choosing a lacrosse travel team, several factors should be considered:
- Coaching expertise and philosophy
- Level of competition
- Practice and game schedules
- Travel requirements
- Cost and financial commitments
- Team culture and player development focus
How can you determine if a program is the right fit? Schedule visits to watch practices or games, speak with current players and parents, and have open discussions with coaches about their expectations and approach to player development.
Benefits of Joining a Lacrosse Travel Team
Participating in a lacrosse travel team can offer numerous advantages for dedicated players:
- Exposure to high-level competition
- Advanced skill development
- Opportunities for college recruitment
- Building a strong lacrosse network
- Travel experiences and team bonding
Is joining a travel team right for every player? While the benefits can be significant, it’s essential to consider the time commitment, financial investment, and potential impact on other activities before making a decision.
Youth Lacrosse Travel Team Considerations
For younger players, the decision to join a travel team requires careful thought. Programs like Blue Star Lacrosse offer structured approaches to youth development:
Blue Star Lacrosse Youth Program
Based in New Jersey, Blue Star Lacrosse provides a model for youth travel teams:
- Geographically-based teams to minimize travel
- Focus on fundamentals and passion for the game
- Limited mandatory commitment to allow for multi-sport participation
- Optional fall, winter, and spring programming
How can parents ensure a positive experience for young players in travel programs? Look for teams that prioritize skill development, foster a love for the game, and maintain reasonable expectations for time commitment at the youth level.
Lacrosse Travel Team Schedules and Commitments
Understanding the time investment required is crucial when considering a lacrosse travel team. Most programs offer year-round opportunities, but commitment levels can vary:
Typical Season Breakdown
- Fall: Tournaments and skill development (often optional)
- Winter: Indoor training and conditioning
- Spring: Primary competitive season for school-based teams
- Summer: Main travel season with multiple tournaments
How much time should players expect to dedicate to a travel team? Weekly commitments during peak seasons often include 2-3 practices and weekend tournaments or games. Off-season training may involve 1-2 sessions per week.
Lacrosse Travel Team Costs and Budgeting
Participating in a lacrosse travel team can represent a significant financial investment. Costs typically include:
- Team fees (covering coaching, field rentals, and administrative expenses)
- Tournament entry fees
- Travel expenses (transportation, lodging, meals)
- Equipment and uniforms
How can families manage the costs associated with lacrosse travel teams? Some strategies include:
- Budgeting well in advance for known expenses
- Exploring fundraising opportunities through the team or club
- Seeking out local sponsorships or support
- Investigating scholarship or financial aid options offered by some programs
While costs can be substantial, many families find the investment worthwhile for the experiences and opportunities provided to dedicated players.
College Recruitment and Lacrosse Travel Teams
For high school players with aspirations of playing lacrosse in college, travel teams can play a crucial role in the recruitment process:
Recruitment Benefits of Travel Teams
- Exposure to college coaches at showcase tournaments
- Opportunity to compete against other top prospects
- Access to recruiting resources and guidance from experienced coaches
- Development of skills necessary to play at the next level
How can players maximize their recruitment potential through travel teams? Focus on consistent skill development, maintain strong academic performance, and work closely with coaches to create highlight videos and communicate with college programs.
Balancing School and Travel Team Commitments
Success in both academics and lacrosse requires careful time management. Players should:
- Communicate regularly with teachers about travel schedules
- Utilize travel time for studying when possible
- Prioritize assignments and projects around team commitments
- Seek support from academic advisors or tutors if needed
By maintaining a strong balance between lacrosse and academics, players can position themselves as attractive recruits for college programs.
Building a Lacrosse Travel Team
For coaches or organizations looking to establish a new lacrosse travel team, several key steps are involved:
- Assess local interest and demand for a travel program
- Secure qualified coaching staff with strong lacrosse backgrounds
- Develop a business plan, including budget projections and fee structures
- Establish relationships with facilities for practices and home games
- Create a curriculum focused on skill development and team strategies
- Plan a competitive schedule, including local games and travel tournaments
- Implement a marketing strategy to attract players and build program awareness
What are the key challenges in starting a new lacrosse travel team? Common hurdles include securing consistent field space, managing operational costs, and building a reputation to compete with established programs for top talent.
Keys to Travel Team Success
- Emphasize player development over win-at-all-costs mentality
- Foster a positive team culture that attracts and retains players
- Maintain open communication with players and parents
- Continuously evaluate and improve all aspects of the program
By focusing on these elements, new travel teams can establish themselves as valuable options for ambitious lacrosse players.
Lacrosse Travel Team Equipment and Gear
Proper equipment is essential for safety and performance in lacrosse. Travel team players typically need:
Essential Lacrosse Gear
- Stick (separate regulations for attack/midfield and defensive players)
- Helmet (boys) or goggles (girls)
- Shoulder pads and arm guards (boys)
- Gloves
- Mouthguard
- Cleats
- Athletic cup (boys)
How can players ensure they have the right equipment for travel team play? Consult with coaches on specific team requirements and consider visiting specialized lacrosse retailers for proper fitting and selection of gear.
Team Sales and Bulk Purchasing
Many travel teams offer opportunities for bulk equipment and uniform purchases to help reduce costs for families. Programs like Tribal West Lacrosse provide team sales services, allowing clubs to outfit their players with consistent, high-quality gear.
Is purchasing through team sales always the best option? While it can offer cost savings and ensure uniformity, players may sometimes prefer to select certain pieces of equipment individually based on personal preferences or specific needs.
The Future of Lacrosse Travel Teams
As lacrosse continues to grow in popularity across the United States, the landscape of travel teams is evolving:
Emerging Trends in Lacrosse Travel Teams
- Increased specialization and position-specific training
- Integration of advanced analytics and performance tracking
- Expansion of indoor and box lacrosse opportunities
- Growing focus on multi-sport athletes and diverse skill development
- Enhanced use of video analysis and remote coaching tools
How will these trends impact the development of young lacrosse players? The emphasis on specialized training and analytics may accelerate skill development, while the recognition of multi-sport benefits could lead to more well-rounded athletes.
Challenges and Opportunities
As travel teams continue to proliferate, several challenges and opportunities arise:
- Balancing competitive drive with player well-being and burnout prevention
- Addressing socioeconomic barriers to participation in elite programs
- Adapting to changing NCAA recruitment rules and timelines
- Expanding opportunities for players in non-traditional lacrosse regions
- Incorporating new technologies to enhance training and performance
By proactively addressing these issues, lacrosse travel teams can continue to provide valuable experiences and development opportunities for passionate players across the country.

Says the main junior of Russian hockey.
Matvey Michkov is the most talented and most discussed junior in Russian hockey. He already scored lacrosse for the first Russian team, and experts seriously predicted that he would go to the Beijing Olympics. Recently, the striker, who stopped getting into the main part of SKA, turned 18 years old. As a gift for coming of age, the “soldiers” presented Michkov with a lease in Sochi. And already in the second match for the Leopards, Matvey scored a goal against Ak Bars.
– Recently you changed your mask to a visor. A big step for every young player. Already used to it?
– At the first training sessions and in the first game, it was unusual. It’s not every day that changes like this happen. But he has already adapted to the game with Ak Bars. In general, every day, with every workout, it gets better and better.
– The review is probably better. What is the difficulty? Feeling more vulnerable?
– I would not say that I became vulnerable. There is no such player who would play in a mask after 18 years. So I’m not the first, I’m not the last. The main plus is not only the view, but also the fact that the face is blown out, I feel fresh.
– 18th birthday, visor instead of mask, departure from St. Petersburg. There is a feeling that everything, childhood has passed?
– Of course, this is a new challenge for me. It’s good that I managed to make a full-fledged debut in the KHL for Sochi. I will do my best to make the team win.
— Before the loan spell at Sochi, you received a lot of playing time for SKA-Neva. Did it help you adapt?
– The transition really turned out to be quite smooth. In the VHL, I also played against men. Of course, there is a speed difference with the KHL. We have to adapt to them, make decisions twice as fast.
– Already in the second match for Sochi, Shipachev, Radulov, Kagarlitsky and other stars played against you. Was there any memorable moment associated with them?
— Yes, no. First of all, I remember my goal. Because he was the first for Sochi, and the first in this KHL season. It’s good that you managed to stand out. I hope this will continue. I want to contribute to the team.
– Some fans and journalists criticized you for the second bullet against Ak Bars. Like, this is bullshit. What will you answer them?
– I didn’t want to score beautifully. I just wanted to score, to bring victory to the team. I have already managed to shoot like this in the VHL. Yes, it didn’t work out now, but I have this bullet put on stream. This is not foppery, but one of the blanks that I use in order to hit the gate.
— How did you know that you were going on loan to Sochi?
– I woke up in St. Petersburg. An agent called me and said that I was going to play in Sochi. I asked for at least a few days to get ready and arrived. In Sochi, they provided all the conditions: where to live, where to eat, where to train. I am slowly getting settled.
The main prodigy of Russia leaves SKA. Michkov’s loan to Sochi is a bad transition for the KHL
– Yaroslav Likhachev himself asked for a loan when Lokomotiv sent him to the VHL. Did you ask the SKA leadership to let you go?
— I really just wanted to play. I was transferred to SKA-Neva, where I gave all my best. I tried to score, to give in every game. All management knows that I have a great desire to play. Thanks to them for giving me a chance to play for Sochi in the KHL.
— Did you yourself understand why you didn’t get into the main squad of SKA?
– This question is not for me, though. My job is to play hockey. To be honest, I don’t know.
– There is a young team in Sochi. The absence of veterans nearby who could both support and shout, do you like it? Or, on the contrary, is this not enough?
– Why are there no veterans? There are experienced guys who have seen a lot of things, won. This is Yuri Alexandrov and Nikita Pivtsakin. They have something to share, to convey their experience. It’s always interesting to get something new from older guys. Sochi has a great team that can win. We need to prove it with deeds.
– They say a lot that in SKA you could talk with older partners in a raised voice, shout. Has anything like this ever happened or is it a myth?
– I treat all people who are older than me with respect. I was taught this from childhood. People played, achieved something – how can I behave disrespectfully with them, somehow call them names? Another thing is that no one looks at the passport on the ice. Anything happens. But when you leave the ice, you have to show respect.
– For example, they wrote about some incident with Alexander Volkov at a training camp in Novogorsk.
– Whoever wrote this is exaggerating a lot. We just collided and that was it. There was a training game, everyone was charged. It happens. We have excellent friendly relations with Alexander Volkov and communicate well.
— Where do such rumors come from? Why do people talk about your character so often?
– I don’t know. I shouldn’t know it. My task is to play hockey and remain human in any situation, and not delve into dirty laundry.

– Many people become friends after fights. Everyone knows the case of your fight with Vanya Miroshnichenko at the national team training. Did that episode change your relationship in any way?
– Our relationship with Vanya is very good and has only become stronger. Actually, our joint history in the Russian national team began with that fight. After it, we won the Youth Olympic Games, played together at the World Championships and other tournaments. Since then, we have maintained friendly relations, we communicate closely. He recently scored his first goal in the KHL. I am very happy for him! He’s really a big guy.
– Do you have an absentee rivalry with him? Miroshnichenko, after the goal for Avangard, said “except in our thoughts we compete.”
– I don’t have one. I just want to wish Vanya all the best and as many goals as possible in the future. Rivalry? Only in terms of hockey, maybe, but not in life. We congratulate each other on the debut, goals.
– These days the World Youth Championship is being held in Canada. And he should have been in Russia. And you were supposed to play there with Miroshnichenko. Do you often think about this?
– I wouldn’t say. It is a pity, of course, that it was not possible to participate in such a tournament. Our task is to go on the ice, and if for some reason this cannot be done, it is not up to us, which means we should not get hung up on this.
— Have you watched and do you plan to watch MFM?
– Talented guys play. You can see reviews, matches, statistics. Of course, I would like Russia to play at the MFM. I hope that the next tournament will not be without our team.
– Canada lost the first match. Surprised?
– I wouldn’t say. Everyone learned to play hockey. Moreover, the Czech Republic is traditionally a strong team. This result is definitely not a sensation.
– Among other things, your competitor in the NHL draft, Connor Bedard, plays there. Interested to see him at this level?
– He is a great player. I was interested in playing against him. I’ll see how he shows up.
Michkov has no chance to become like Ovechkin. The first to be selected in the NHL draft is not him, but the Canadian prodigy
– Some scouts already put you in third place in the pre-draft rankings. Transfer to Sochi before the end of the season – a chance to convince them?
– I think so. This is a great challenge for me. I always love something new. I will try to play my best hockey. But the main thing is the results of the team I currently play for.
— What are your memories of that unfinished MFM where you managed to play two matches?
— First of all, he brought me new acquaintances. I got to know many guys at that tournament. It was nice to be on the same team with them. Vanya Didkovsky, for example, recently moved to Sochi, and we played with him in the youth team. Despite the fact that that MFM could not be played due to the coronavirus, it was remembered rather on the positive side. We wanted to prove ourselves and show what we are capable of. The Russian team had a chance to win the tournament.
— What did Alexey Emelin’s power move teach you that you missed in the pre-season?
– It was a game moment. You need to be ready for everything. Well, yes, it did. We move on. Injury is always unpleasant, but I try to learn from everything. I figured out how not to play. I try to improve all my skills, to be smarter.
Russia’s main child prodigy was broken at a tournament in Sochi. Emelin sent the talented Michkov to the hospital
— Did you move to Sochi alone or with your family?
— My family went with me to Sochi. Dad has been there all his life, from the first steps on the ice. He is basically my personal trainer. Always prompts, observes, supports me.
— Have you worked with your father like this before?
— Yes. The only difference is that in Lokomotiv he went out on the ice and coached other guys.
— Is this format of relationship with your father more his initiative or your desire?
– This is a mutual decision. My father and I have common goals.
– A year ago, you said in an interview “I have one hockey in my head.” Now too?
— Yes.
– And how to distract from hockey? Some play video games, some read.
— I can go to the cinema with my friends, have dinner at a restaurant. Like many, I can play the playstation. I love spending time with my family. And just walk, observe nature. I really liked St. Petersburg, and now I’m studying Sochi.

– Sochi plays at the Bolshoy Arena – the same one that hosted the 2014 Olympics. Does it remind you of those games?
— Rather, I remember how in my childhood at 13-14 I went here to Sirius with Lokomotiv. And when Sochi played, they went as a team to the KHL. Then I remember the atmosphere in the stands, the fans emotionally supported their team. Now I want to place the respect and love of local fans. It’s always nice to see full stands.
– You were 9years, when the Russian team with Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Kovalchuk lost in the quarterfinals to the Finns. There were no thoughts that I would grow up, get to the Olympics and take revenge?
— Of course, there are such thoughts. This is my dream.
– Last season there were talks that Matvey Michkov should be taken to the Olympics. Did you believe in such an outcome?
– There is always a desire, but not everything depends on me. But I did not dwell on it, because initially there was little chance that I would go to Beijing. But the zeal was great.
– Sochi is the last team of the championship, only two months left to play in the regular season. Is the season ending too early for you?
– Sochi has a youth team “Captain”. Let’s see how things turn out. To begin with, I will try to win every match with Sochi, and then – as the management decides.
