The Importance of Event Sanctioning in Lacrosse
Event sanctioning plays a crucial role in elevating the quality and consistency of lacrosse tournaments. But what exactly does sanctioning entail?
Sanctioning is a designation given to events that have adopted operational and safety standards set forth by USA Lacrosse. These standards encompass various aspects of tournament organization and execution, ensuring a high-quality experience for all involved.
Key Elements of Sanctioned Events
Sanctioned tournaments must adhere to specific requirements, including:
- USA Lacrosse membership for head coaches and players
- Use of USA Lacrosse certified officials
- Adherence to USA Lacrosse rules
- Implementation of risk management protocols
- Provision of proper medical support
These elements combine to create a more professional and secure environment for lacrosse competition.
Evaluating Tournament Quality: What to Look For
When choosing a lacrosse tournament to participate in, it’s essential to consider several factors that contribute to the overall quality of the event. Here are key aspects to evaluate:
1. Safety Measures
Does the tournament prioritize player safety? Look for events that provide on-site medical professionals and adhere to proper risk management protocols.
2. Officiating Standards
High-quality tournaments employ certified officials who are well-versed in the rules and can maintain fair play throughout the competition.
3. Organization and Communication
Efficient tournaments have clear systems for disseminating information about schedules, field locations, and any potential changes or updates.
4. Competition Level
Consider whether the tournament offers an appropriate level of competition for your team’s skill and experience.
5. Venue Quality
The playing facilities should be well-maintained and suitable for competitive lacrosse.
By assessing these factors, teams can make informed decisions about which tournaments will provide the best overall experience.

Preparing for a Lacrosse Tournament: Tips for Success
Participating in a lacrosse tournament requires careful preparation to ensure optimal performance and enjoyment. Here are some essential tips for players and teams:
1. Physical Conditioning
Tournaments often involve multiple games in a short period. Maintain a consistent fitness routine leading up to the event to build stamina and reduce the risk of injury.
2. Equipment Check
Inspect all gear well in advance of the tournament. Replace or repair any damaged equipment to avoid last-minute issues.
3. Team Strategy Sessions
Hold pre-tournament meetings to review game plans, discuss opponent tendencies, and set team goals for the event.
4. Nutrition and Hydration
Plan meals and snacks that will provide sustained energy throughout the tournament. Emphasize proper hydration before, during, and after games.
5. Rest and Recovery
Ensure adequate sleep in the days leading up to the tournament. Plan for downtime between games to rest and recharge.
By following these preparation guidelines, teams can maximize their performance and enjoyment at lacrosse tournaments.
The Impact of Tournaments on Player Development
Lacrosse tournaments play a significant role in the growth and development of young athletes. These events offer unique opportunities that extend beyond regular season play:
Exposure to Diverse Playing Styles
Tournaments often bring together teams from different regions, exposing players to varied strategies and techniques. This diversity challenges athletes to adapt and expand their skill sets.
Accelerated Skill Improvement
The concentrated nature of tournament play, with multiple games in quick succession, can lead to rapid skill development as players repeatedly apply and refine their abilities.
Mental Toughness
Tournaments test players’ mental resilience, teaching them to perform under pressure and bounce back from setbacks quickly.
Team Bonding
The shared experience of competing in a tournament environment often strengthens team cohesion and camaraderie.
College Recruitment Opportunities
Many tournaments attract college scouts, providing a platform for players to showcase their talents to potential recruiters.
By participating in well-organized tournaments, young lacrosse players can accelerate their development both on and off the field.
Navigating the Tournament Experience: A Guide for Parents and Spectators
For parents and spectators, attending a lacrosse tournament can be an exciting yet potentially overwhelming experience. Here’s how to make the most of the event while supporting your athlete:
Understanding Tournament Formats
Familiarize yourself with the tournament structure, including pool play, bracket systems, and tiebreaker rules. This knowledge will help you follow the progression of the event.
Spectator Etiquette
Respect the rules and guidelines set by tournament organizers. This may include designated viewing areas, noise restrictions, and specific conduct expectations.
Supporting Your Athlete
Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement, regardless of game outcomes. Focus on effort, teamwork, and personal growth rather than solely on results.
Logistics and Planning
Prepare for long days at the fields by bringing essentials such as sunscreen, water, snacks, and comfortable seating. Familiarize yourself with the venue layout and schedule to navigate efficiently between games.
Engaging with the Lacrosse Community
Use tournaments as an opportunity to connect with other lacrosse families, learn about different programs, and broaden your understanding of the sport’s landscape.
By approaching tournaments with the right mindset and preparation, parents and spectators can enhance the experience for themselves and their young athletes.
Lacrosse tournaments offer a dynamic and exciting environment for players to showcase their skills, develop as athletes, and foster a deeper love for the sport. By understanding the importance of sanctioned events, preparing thoroughly, and approaching tournaments with the right perspective, all participants—from players and coaches to parents and spectators—can derive maximum benefit from these competitive experiences. As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow, well-organized tournaments will play an increasingly vital role in nurturing talent, building community, and advancing the game at all levels.

Sanctioned Tournaments
What is event sanctioning?
Sanctioning is a designation given to events that have adopted a set of operational and safety standards set forward by USA Lacrosse. These tournament standards are a set of best practices that cover five main areas of an event: game format, venue, risk management, event administration, and certified officials. When these practices are adopted in their entirety, events create a more positive experience for participants while receiving insurance and marketing benefits from USA Lacrosse.
What is the purpose of USA Lacrosse event sanctioning.
The purpose of sanctioning is to provide a more consistent playing experience for participants across the lacrosse tournament landscape. Today, many lacrosse tournaments are running by different rules and game formats which leaves players, parents, and spectators adjusting from event to event. When a tournament is sanctioned, the event operator guarantees participants what they can expect from the event.
Why should my team attend a USA Lacrosse sanctioned event?
Have you ever been to a tournament and been left guessing: What rules are we playing? Are there certified medical professionals here? How do I find out schedule information and field maps? A sanctioned tournament guarantees that the event has done its due diligence to ensure that you, the participants, have the most positive experience possible. Sanctioned tournaments guarantee there will be athletic trainers on-site, that there will be an information tent with staff present, and that there is a clear communication plan for schedules and any updates. Sanctioned tournaments have taken the extra step to make sure each participant has a great lacrosse experience.
How do I get my event sanctioned?
The primary requirements are requiring USA Lacrosse membership from head coaches and players, using USA Lacrosse certified officials, and the use of USA Lacrosse rules. You can contact Mark Eissele via email or 410.235.6882 for more information.
Are there any costs to get my event sanctioned?
There is no cost to have your tournament sanctioned through USA Lacrosse.
How do I know if a tournament has been sanctioned?
There are two ways to know if a tournament is sanctioned. A USA Lacrosse Sanctioned Tournament will have rights to the USA Lacrosse Sanctioned Tournament Logo and use that logo to acknowledge that they are a part of the program. Additionally, you can go to the sanctioned tournaments page to see a listing of all currently sanctioned tournaments.
What if I need help attaining the sanctioned tournament standards?
The USA Lacrosse staff is more than happy to help evaluate your event and identify how you can achieve sanctioning status. Because the goal is to provide a more consistent event experience nationwide, USA Lacrosse is willing to assist each event to achieve sanctioned status.
How can I submit feedback for my experience at a recent sanctioned tournament I’ve attended?
If you would like to contact USA Lacrosse about the Sanctioning Program or provide feedback about a particular event, please send your message to Mark Eissele at [email protected]

The event was well organized and competitive, with teams from Canada, NY, NJ and Massachusetts attending, leading up to a true playoff and championship game. Only a 15 minute drive from Lake George, this event is a great excuse for a fun family vacation with a lax tournament built in.
