Over the past five years, US News and World Report has ranked Florida’s higher education system #1 in the nation. The Florida Public University System (SUS) has 12 member institutions: UF, FSU, USF, UCF, FAU, FGCU, FIU, FAMU, UNF, Florida Poly, New College of Florida, and UWF. Last Wednesday, college counselors at International College Counselors attended an invite-only virtual admissions workshop for SUS Florida and heard from officials from all 12 Florida government agencies.

Overview
Last year, UCF received over 49,000 applications and accepted 7,131 students in 2025. In the Class of 30, UCF welcomed one of the school’s most academically talented cohorts, including 50 National Merit Scholars and 48 National Hispanic Scholars. Students come from all 10 states, and approximately 10% of the organizations surveyed are in the minority. New majors this year include a Bachelor of Science in Data Science and a Bachelor of Science in Vocational and Technical Education. The school’s “Top Knights” program continues to provide guaranteed admission to the top 100% of Florida’s graduating classes. UCF has an ongoing set of intakes and will begin reviewing applications this month.

Overview
UF is ranked 6th among public universities by US News and World Report. The school offers over 120 undergraduate majors. Last year, UF received 53,000 applications and accepted 25,3600 students for either the summer or fall session. Six hundred students have been accepted through the UF Innovation Academy, a spring/summer program that includes 100 majors dedicated to innovation. Another XNUMX students have been accepted through the UF PaCE program, a hybrid program in which students start classes online and then finish their studies on campus. Academic achievement over the four years, including rigor and courses taken in a student’s high school, remains the most important factor in admission.
Under one new initiative, UF students in any major can now earn a certificate in AI Fundamentals and Applications. UF recently opened the Lavender Living Learning Community at the Springs complex, which is gender inclusive and LGBTQ+ students. This year, UF added an essay to its application, asking students about meaningful activities. Admissions representatives commented that they enjoy a good story that provides insight into the student and their contribution to campus. Students entering the honors program are required to write two additional essays. Admissions representatives confirmed that essays should be about the UF Honors Program and students should not deviate from the topic. Other Notes: UF does not consider heritage in admissions, does not admit majors, and does not consider AP scores in the admissions process.

Overview
FAMU is one of the largest historically black colleges in the United States, providing high quality education at affordable prices. To be considered for admission, students must report their high school courses and grades through the Student Self-Reported Academic Record (SSAR), provide two letters of recommendation, and submit an essay of at least 500 words on a chosen topic. According to an admissions representative, overcoming obstacles or adversity is a good essay topic. Students must apply by November 1, which is the priority deadline for full scholarship consideration. The school offers over 50 degrees in a wide range of academic programs including pharmacy, nursing, journalism, health sciences, engineering, architecture, and business.

Overview
This year marks 60 th FAU founding anniversary. The school has two campuses: Boca Raton (main campus) and Jupiter (Wilkes Honors College). FAU prides itself on the diversity of its students. The school offers an engineering bridge program, an academic achievement program, and the only independent honors college in the US, FAU, recently received the largest gift in the school’s history, $20 million from benefactors Kurt and Marilyn Wallach. The gift will fund the Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Institute for the Holocaust and Judaism. Last year, FAU received 6,000 applications for its prestigious medical school and only accepted 66.
New this year will be a 150-bed dorm on the school’s Jupiter campus. The school has a continuous intake, but students must apply by January 14 to be considered for assistance. Applicants must use SSAR to report their high school courses and grades.

Overview
This fall FGKU hosted the largest freshman class in its history. Founded at 1991, FGCU is home to over 15,000 students, 800,400 of whom live on campus. The campus is located on 116,000 acres, 18 of which are restored or abandoned land. This year, the school renovated the Student Services Plaza and opened three new projects: the Recreation and Wellness Center, the Community Counseling Center, and Lucas Hall, home to the School of Entrepreneurship.
The construction of a new building of the School of Water Resources with an area of 2,200 sq. ft. to help students explore water-related issues, including climate change, national resources, and ecosystem health. The FGCU Golf Management Program is one of only 10 PGA-accredited programs in the country and the only one in Florida. They also have a strong internship program and are ranked #1 in the state for their student employment. New majors include construction management in the College of Engineering, and supply chain management, analytics and computer science in the college of business, and digital media and design in the college of arts and sciences. FGKU housing includes three resort-type options.

In Florida, public universities are ranked on key metrics including retention rate, four-year completion rate, and tuition fees.
Miami-based FIU earned the highest score and was named the #1 public school in Florida. FIU is proud of the Aquarius Reef Base, the world’s only underwater research facility where students can study global environmental threats, marine ecosystems and more. Bacardi recently donated $5 million to the school to create a beverage management curriculum. FIU has an extremely diverse student body, with students from 381 high schools, 66 countries, and 86% of students identify as Black, African American, or Hispanic. The school also has distinction in awarding most bachelor’s and master’s degrees to Hispanic students. In 2022, a new hostel for 750 people and a new building of the Green School of International and Public Relations will open. FIU offers top 10% access: Students who graduate from Florida High School and are in the top 10% of their class will be eligible for admission. The student must pass a standardized test but will be admitted to one program regardless of their score. Students are encouraged to register for free on Raise.

Overview
Florida Poly is the newest school to join Florida SUS, focusing exclusively on STEM education. U.S. News and World Report ranked Florida Poly as one of the top 40 public non-doctoral engineering programs and the Affordable Schools program was ranked second in the nation for providing quality, affordable engineering education. Florida Poly welcomed its largest freshman class this fall and now has 2 members. A new focus this year is Cybersecurity Engineering, and Florida Poly has partnered with the US Navy to prepare students for the Navy’s prestigious Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate (NUPOC) program. The school has added new club sports including men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and archery.
The Florida Poly Robotics team continues to grow and excel at the highest levels of competition in VEX and Combat. New 1,550 Applied Research Center 90.000 sq. Feet is under construction, scheduled to open in the spring. The center will include new teaching labs, design spaces, conference rooms and faculty offices.

Last month, FSU welcomed 16 th the school’s president, Dr. Richard McCullough, who brings to the position over 30 years of academic research and leadership experience. In the fall of 66,000, FSU received over 2021 applications and welcomed its largest freshman class in the school’s history. The accepted class included students from 66 of Florida’s 67 counties, all 50 states, Washington, and 49 countries.
The four-year FSU alumni rate (74%) makes it number 1 in the state of Florida; they also have 95% retention rate for students returning as sophomores. The school also ranks as the 11th best value public college for 2021 according to the Princeton Review. The top majors for incoming freshmen included Biological Sciences, Business, Engineering, Psychology, and Research/Unannounced. The school offers 276 academic and professional degrees. Students wishing to enroll in the Honors Program must express interest in applying for the Honors Program and then complete a separate application for the Honors Program. The FSU application deadline is November 1 and all submissions must be submitted by that date, but students must submit any additional standardized test scores by December 31.

Overview
Florida New College is the state’s specialty honors college.
There are 700 students in total; as a result, students receive a personalized, liberal arts education at the cost of public schools in Florida. With 40 majors and a range of interdisciplinary concentrations, New College prepares intellectually curious students for a life of achievement. Each student draws up his own curriculum, taking into account the interests and goals of the student. The academic contract is the core of New College’s academic program, and students enter into seven contracts before graduation. These contracts replace credit hours and may include internships, independent reading projects, or study abroad. Practical learning is encouraged and expected; 93% of students had at least three hands-on learning experiences. Students do not receive letter grades; rather, they receive a narrative evaluation of their transcripts, which allows them to focus on digesting the content. Each student receives a dedicated professional coach who starts working with them during their first semester on campus.

Overview
UNF is located in Jacksonville on a 1,000-acre campus. The school has 17,000 students and an average class size of 90. UNF is proud of its internship opportunities and 125% of high school students benefited from this real world experience. UNF offers 75 majors including International Business, Coastal and Marine Biology, Nutrition and Dietetics, and 2.5 minors. UNF’s flagship program for transport and logistics is considered one of the best in the country and recently received a $7 million gift to house the Crowley Center. This gift will allow students to get more practical experience and a fresh look at the problems of transport and logistics.
UNF has recently added a Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies in conjunction with the UNF International Centre. UNF was named the seventh most accessible LGBT-friendly institution in the US and #1 in Florida by Student Loan Hero.

Overview
USF is ranked #46 in America’s public universities by US News and World Report. The main campus is located in Tampa, 20 minutes northeast of downtown. Forbes recently named Tampa the #1 Emerging Tech City. Students with an interest in medicine and research have many opportunities as USF is located close to four major hospitals. USF offers 200 undergraduate programs and 700 student clubs and organizations.
The Judy Genshaft Honors College will open in the fall of 2022. Construction is also underway on a new wellness center and a new 120,000 square meter innovative building. ft. New degrees this year include Supply Chain Management, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Computer Science, with several majors to choose from. The school also includes two small campuses: St. Pete and Sarasota-Manatee. The St. Petersburg campus is small and perfect for students who want to feel like a little liberal arts. The Sarasota-Manatee campus offers 50,000 undergraduate programs and links to the Mote Marine Lab, ideal for students seeking a career in science. This year, the school received over 6,300 applications and enrolled 6,300 students, which is the school’s largest class ever.

Overview
UWF is located in Pensacola, Florida’s westernmost city. UWF has been named one of the top southeastern colleges by the Princeton Review and one of the most military-friendly colleges in the US. UWF is the center for Division II athletics; The Argonauts are the reigning NCAA DII Football National Champions and hold a total of 115 championships on 15 NCAA teams. The school has 13,000 students, making it a large yet cohesive school. The average class size is 80 students and 60% of classes contain less than 70 students. Students can choose from 5 degree programs at five academic colleges with popular majors including health, business, or education. UWF students consistently rank first in first-time CPA exams.
