Understanding the Role of Shooting Strings in Lacrosse
Shooting strings are a crucial component of a lacrosse stick, playing a vital role in determining the stick’s performance and the player’s ability to control the ball. Despite their name, these horizontal threads impact much more than just shooting. They influence various aspects of stick performance, including hold, channel formation, rake, and release point.
The term “shooting strings” may be somewhat misleading, as these strings affect passing, cradling, and overall ball control as well. Some players and coaches have questioned why they aren’t called “passing strings” or “channel strings” to better reflect their comprehensive impact on stick performance.
What Are Shooting Strings?
Shooting strings are horizontal threads woven across the top of the lacrosse stick’s pocket. They are typically made of materials such as nylon, cotton, or synthetic fibers. The number, placement, and tension of these strings can significantly affect how the ball is released from the pocket during throws and shots.
The Impact of Shooting Strings on Stick Performance
Shooting strings play a crucial role in determining several key aspects of lacrosse stick performance:
- Ball release: They influence the angle and speed at which the ball leaves the pocket.
- Pocket hold: Shooting strings can increase or decrease the pocket’s ability to retain the ball.
- Channel formation: They help shape the pocket’s channel, guiding the ball’s path during release.
- Whip: The tension and placement of shooting strings affect the stick’s “whip” or the downward force applied to the ball upon release.
How Do Shooting Strings Affect Whip?
Whip refers to how high or low your stick throws the ball during a normal shooting motion. Tighter shooting strings generally increase whip, causing the ball to release lower. Looser strings decrease whip, resulting in a higher release. Players can adjust their shooting strings to fine-tune their stick’s whip to match their playing style and preferences.
Choosing the Right Materials for Shooting Strings
The choice of material for shooting strings can significantly impact stick performance. Common materials include:
- Nylon: Durable and weather-resistant, offering consistent performance.
- Cotton: Provides a soft feel but may absorb moisture and stretch over time.
- Hockey lace: Offers a balance of durability and softness.
- Synthetic fibers: Can provide unique performance characteristics depending on the specific material.
What Are the Benefits of Using Hard Nylon vs. Soft Hockey Lace?
Some players prefer a combination of hard nylon and soft hockey lace for their shooting strings. The hard nylon, typically used for the top string, provides consistency and snap in the release. The softer hockey lace, often used as the second string, helps reduce impact and provides a softer release. This combination can offer a balance of performance and feel that many players find optimal.
Optimizing Shooting String Configuration
The configuration of shooting strings can vary widely based on player preference and style of play. Some key factors to consider include:
- Number of strings: Typically ranging from one to four
- Placement: The distance between strings and their position relative to the scoop
- Tension: How tightly the strings are woven across the pocket
- Knot placement: Where knots are tied can affect ball release and channel formation
How Many Shooting Strings Should Be Used?
The number of shooting strings used can vary depending on personal preference and playing style. Some players prefer a minimalist approach with just one or two strings, which can reduce overall head weight and provide a quicker release. Others opt for three or four strings for increased control and customization of ball flight. Experimenting with different configurations is key to finding the optimal setup for your playing style.
Adjusting Whip with Shooting Strings
Shooting strings are a primary tool for adjusting the whip of a lacrosse stick. Players can fine-tune their stick’s performance by making subtle changes to the shooting string setup:
How Can You Increase Whip?
To add more whip to your stick:
- Tighten the shooting strings, starting from the top and working your way down.
- Add an additional shooting string if using fewer than the maximum allowed.
- Move the shooting strings closer together.
- Use stiffer materials for the shooting strings.
How Can You Decrease Whip?
To reduce whip in your stick:
- Loosen the shooting strings, particularly the lower ones.
- Remove a shooting string if using multiple strings.
- Space the shooting strings farther apart.
- Use softer materials for the shooting strings.
Shooting String Placement and Tension
The placement and tension of shooting strings are critical factors in determining stick performance. Generally, shooting strings should be looser at the bottom and tighter at the top. This configuration helps create a smooth channel for the ball to travel along during release.
What Is the Ideal Placement for Shooting Strings?
While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, many players find success with the following general guidelines:
- Top string: Placed 1-2 diamonds from the scoop
- Second string: 2-3 diamonds below the top string
- Third string (if used): 2-3 diamonds below the second string
- Fourth string (if used): Near the throat of the head, often referred to as a “nylon”
Remember, these are starting points. Experimentation and personal preference should guide your final configuration.
Position-Specific Considerations for Shooting Strings
Different playing positions may benefit from varying shooting string setups:
How Do Shooting String Preferences Differ by Position?
Position-specific considerations for shooting strings include:
- Attackmen: Often prefer more whip for increased shot speed and accuracy on close-range shots.
- Midfielders: May opt for a balanced setup that allows for both accurate shooting and long passes.
- Defensemen: Typically prefer less whip for longer, more controlled passes.
- Goalies: Generally use minimal shooting strings to maximize control and consistency on outlet passes.
These preferences can vary widely among individual players, so it’s essential to experiment and find what works best for your playing style and role on the team.
Maintaining and Adjusting Shooting Strings
Regular maintenance and adjustment of shooting strings are crucial for consistent stick performance. Over time, strings may stretch, loosen, or wear out, affecting the stick’s throwing characteristics.
How Often Should Shooting Strings Be Replaced?
The frequency of shooting string replacement depends on several factors:
- Usage: More frequent play may require more frequent replacement.
- Weather conditions: Exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures can degrade strings faster.
- Material: Some materials are more durable than others.
- Personal preference: Some players prefer to replace strings more often to maintain optimal performance.
As a general rule, inspect your shooting strings regularly and consider replacing them if you notice significant wear, fraying, or changes in stick performance. Many players replace their shooting strings every few months or at the start of each new season.
How Can Players Learn to Adjust Their Own Shooting Strings?
Learning to adjust and maintain your own shooting strings is a valuable skill for any lacrosse player. Here are some tips to get started:
- Study your current setup: Understand how your strings are configured before making changes.
- Make small adjustments: Change one aspect at a time to understand its impact.
- Practice tying knots: Learn basic knots used in stringing, such as the overhand knot and figure-eight knot.
- Experiment with tension: Try different levels of tightness to find what works best for you.
- Seek guidance: Ask experienced players or coaches for advice and demonstrations.
- Use online resources: Many websites and video tutorials offer detailed instructions on adjusting shooting strings.
Remember, becoming proficient at adjusting your shooting strings takes practice and patience. Don’t be afraid to experiment, but always ensure your stick remains legal according to your league’s regulations.
How to Adjust Whip in Your Men’s Lacrosse Stick
Having a well-strung stick is crucial in lacrosse. It can have an effect on the accuracy of your shots and passes, your stick-handling skills and also the ‘whip factor’ of your stick. These tips will help you understand what whip is and how to adjust it.
WHAT IS WHIP?
Whip is how high or low your stick is throwing the ball while you’re using a normal shooting motion. If your shots are traveling too high above the goal, that can be a sign that you don’t have enough whip. Meanwhile, if your shots are unintentionally traveling to the ground, that can be a sign that your stick has too much whip. The amount of whip in your stick is primarily determined by how your pocket is strung and, ultimately, is a preference for each player.
HOW TO ADD WHIP
If you’ve decided that your stick has too little whip and you need to add more, there are a couple areas of your pocket you can adjust to make that happen.
- Bottom String – Your first course of action should be to try to loosen the bottom string. This can help give your pocket more depth. Be sure that you are familiar with the legal limits for pockets in your league and stay within those guidelines.
- Shooting Strings – If you still feel like your stick doesn’t have enough whip after adjusting the bottom string, you can also tighten the shooting strings. Begin with the top one and work your way down. Remember that shooting strings should be loosest at the bottom and tightest at the top. Adjusting the shooting strings can help the pocket grab the ball better.
HOW TO DECREASE WHIP
Just like increasing whip, if you would like to loosen your pocket’s grip, you can adjust the bottom string and shooting strings.
- Bottom String – Pulling the bottom string a bit tighter can make the pocket more shallow and help make your release nice and smooth.
- Shooting Strings – Loosening the shooting strings can help your ball roll over them more freely and not get caught or stuck while you’re shooting.
How much whip you want may change by what position you play. Offensive players may prefer more whip for increased speed and harder shots, while defensive players and goalies may want less whip so they have more control and can throw longer passes. If you have multiple sticks, be sure to use a stick with similar whip so that your mechanics stay consistent and are not thrown off.
Why Are They Called Shooting Strings? » Powell Lacrosse Sticks
How do you like your shooters? One of the first meetings we had with Sam we talked in great detail about shooting string set ups. First off, we all agreed how much we love how every player seems to have their own style when it comes to how they configure and tie up their top strings. Certainly one of the coolest aspects of our sport is the individuality within the team concept. Lacrosse is a very creative game filled with very creative people that enjoy expressing themselves. Secondly, we arrived at a question that we honestly do not know the answer to — why are they called “shooting strings?”
These horizontal threads are responsible for much more than just shooting. They also effect the hold, the channel, the rake and the release point as well. The configuration, technique and tension of the shooting strings impact the entire performance of the head. Which is why we wondered why just shooting strings? Why aren’t they called “passing strings?” Or “channel strings?”
Anyway, we digress…here is a little video from our string team leader about our theory on shooter set ups. When we set out on the journey to create the ultimate pocket every decision was based on performance and feel. We arrived at a simple hard nylon up top and a soft hockey lace first string configuration. We only use two strings to help shave overall weight and balance of the head. The top hard nylon is responsible for consistency and snap. The soft lace is for impact reduction and a softer release.
We encourage every player to not only experiment with different set ups, techniques and tensions, but also become educated on how to repair, replace and tune up your shooters. Sam will be available in our live chat sessions, Powell Base Camp, so be sure to tune in and ask him any questions that you have on stringing.

MESH TYPES
Recent advances in technology made by companies like ECD (East Coast Dyes) and StringKing have really led to massive improvements in the mesh game. Back in the day, there was only soft or hard mesh, with both having vast differences. Now that the mesh technology has changed, the differences of each mesh have been minimized greatly. The reason for this is companies now use a semi-soft or semi-hard mesh. The biggest drawback to soft mesh in the past is that the pocket wouldn’t be consistent and the mesh would bag out in the rain and become illegal. The new semi-soft does a much better job keeping the pocket shape, as well as surviving the elements. Old school hard mesh in the past had little to no cushion to it, making your head seem more like a tennis racket than a lacrosse head. The new semi-hard now gives you some more cushion, while keeping the pocket much like the old hard mesh would.

Stringking
Stringking 4X mesh is designed with a new technology called Tri-Twist which weaves the mesh tighter than any previous elite level mesh. The Stringking 4X increases hold, ball feel and control for players that want to feel a bit of a bag while cradling but want non-stretch performance while letting shots rip. This stuff is an outsider shooters dream, but we really love it for guys doing inside feeds and tighter shooting ranges. The 4X is used by some of the best college and high school guys in the nation. As the price here dictates, Stringking is setting the bar for the highest levels of technology and performance. 4X lacrosse mesh is responsive and slightly elastic feeling and has slightly thinner construction on the outer rails. This centers the ball in the sweet spot and gives advanced players all the added control and feel they demand. 4X will improve shot speed and consistency with the new tighter weave.Stringking 4X is the thinnest and lightes mesh in the history of Stringking’s high end mesh introduction. Most of our Pro’s prefer to use semi-soft mesh, due to the better ball control, as well as a better feel for the ball in your stick. If you are a player who is also looking for more hold, then we recommend a soft mesh. Check out the ECD Hero 2.0 Semi-Soft custom pocket, or the StringKing Type 4S! If you are a player who is more of a catch and shoot type player, we recommend semi-hard. The biggest reason for this is that the mesh does a better job holding the shape of the pocket. This helps you consistently have the ball release the same way. If you are a player who prefers to have a little less whip so you can have a little more accuracy when picking corners while terrorizing goalies, check out either the ECD Hero 2.0 Semi-Hard or the StringKing Type 4X. To help figure out which brand of mesh works for you, StringKing is one of the lightest meshes out there and gives you some of the best feel available on the market, while ECD is one of the most durable meshes available.
POCKET PLACEMENT
Now that you have the mesh chosen, the next step is deciding where you want your pocket to be placed. If you are a younger player who is just getting into the sport or playing at a level where you’re playing all the positions, just go with a mid pocket. This is the best all-around pocket and will help younger players really hone in and develop their skills. If you are an attackman, we recommend either a low or a mid pocket. If you are an attackman who plays inside the crease and behind at X, go with a low pocket. The reason being that this pocket gives you the most hold, making your life a lot easier when cradling with one hand and to take the extra punishment that comes from the defense when you’re playing on the crease. If you are an attackman who prefers to play on the wings and shoot from the outside, go with a mid pocket. This will help you blow the ball by the goalie when you’re taking a step down shot. If you are a long pole we say go with a high pocket. One of the hardest parts of playing defense is getting the ball up off the turf quickly and settled into your stick. Using a high pocket will help solve this problem as the ball is scooped up and sits in the pocket right away. This will also make your life easier when throwing the long cross-field passes on the clear, as there is less whip when throwing with a high pocket. If you are a guy who likes to push the rock in transition, go with a mid pocket. This pocket will give you more hold and help you run through checks from the riding attackman. If you play middie, go with a mid pocket. This is the best all-around pocket and is perfect for the do-it-all type of play that is required from midfielders. This is what you need if you are a player who goes from defense to offense, since it gives you a good hold, and allows you to really step into your shots on offense and fire the ball past the goalie.
THROWSTRING CONFIGURATION
The throwstring configuration pertains to the setup of the shooting strings. This affects the release of the ball as well as the hold. The more strings you have, the more hold you have in your stick. The fewer strings you have, the quicker the release. This is another section where we make some suggestions, but if you have a setup that you like and comfortable with we recommend sticking with that. If you are an attackman going with a low pocket, we suggest trying out the 1 pro nylon 1 straight set up. This helps you get the ball out of the stick quickly, which is beneficial for when you’re playing behind the cage at X looking to feed the ball quickly, or when you’re trying to finish inside. If you are an attackman or offensive-minded middie going with a mid pocket we recommend going with the 1 pro nylon 2 straight. This setup gives you a good whip, making your release snappier. What this means is that your shot speed increased, but it can take some extra time to release. This throwstring configuration also increases hold in your stick. For a long pole, our recommendation is the 2 standard throwstring configuration. This is the set up that gives you a low level of whip, making it much easier for you when you’re throwing long clearing passes across the field to other defensemen or throwing the outlet passes to the middies going upfield looking for transition opportunities. Having too much whip will it make it more difficult to throw the long cross-field passes.
OVERVIEW
As a reminder, these are our suggestions, if you have a setup that works great for you, we recommend sticking with that and not changing it! If you are in a pinch and need a head strung up ASAP check out our rush stringing service, which gets your head strung up and shipped from our warehouse in 2 business days or less. Lacrosse Pocket Shooting Strings | Lacrosse Videos, Dye Articles, & Stick Tech
By now, every lacrosse player and parent should be aware of the NHFS pocket rule changes that will be implemented in the 2016 season. The main change is that all shooting strings must be within four inches from the top of the lacrosse head as well as pass a 90-degree stick check. A 90-degree stick check you have seen when a referee holds a players stick upside down to see if the ball rolls out freely. This means you must have straight shooting strings no more than four inches measured from the top of your lacrosse stick only arced with the top of the head. All players will need to conform to these revisions after this season and quite frankly should do so immediately this pre-season if possible.

Number 1
Not paying attention. Lacrosse sticks are the most important part of the game for any player. A lackadaisical attitude will hinder your ability to play, therefore making it less fun. Heads will warp, strings will break and stretch, pockets will wear due to time and use. Poor maintenance will result in poor play. Especially for those who are new to the game and may develop a disdain for it and give up on one of the oldest and greatest games there is to play. A young player is more likely to lose interest if he or she cannot play the game well. However, there are precautionary measures that can be taken to avoid this problem and many of them are fairly easy. Pay attention!

We are reminded heavily of the NCAA rule change a little while back. The nervousness of the community was the same and the rule changes are potentially identical. We will get into the potentials in a moment. This should not be seen as a limitation, but rather another opportunity to let your creativity run wild. Rules are not made to be broken, but there are benefits to be gained for those who learn to work most effectively within the restrictions given.

STX Blog | What’s Your Favorite Stringing Style?
There are a lot of different stringing styles to choose from, so it’s important to find one specifically designed for your position. Choosing the right style can greatly improve your game and give you a solid advantage on the field. Depending on your position and skill, you may want more or less whip, consistent hold or quick release.
We asked five MLL athletes their favorite style of pocket and shooting strings:
Peter Baum
Ohio Machine. Attack/Midfield
I use the new limited edition Super Power + head and a Stallion 500 shaft. My favorite style of stringing is a low pocket, with a nylon and two shooting strings across the top and a “U” lower down. Although it seems to be a bit less popular, I’ve always liked the low pocket because it helps the ball stay extremely secure when carrying. My stick’s whip is about a 6 out of 10.
Will Manny
Boston Cannons. Attack
I look for a stick that has some whip, which helps get the ball out of the stick quickly when I shoot. I like the top string to be a little loose so the ball clicks off the top of the stick or nylon. I use a mid-pocket so the ball finds the channel and releases from the stick right when I want it to. The double “V” in my stick allows for extra hold and ball security. It also helps throw tight passes and shoot with pinpoint accuracy.
Tucker Durkin

I use the STX Hammer, which is the perfect head for any defensive lacrosse player. It’s stiff, durable, great on groundballs, and just wide enough to where I feel like I can get an advantage picking off and deflecting passes.
As a close defenseman, the most important part of stringing is consistency. Whether I’m throwing a long cross-field pass or hitting a middie streaking up the field, I want something that I can be confident with to throw hard, sharp passes. I’ve experimented with a variety of string variations over the years, but I love the consistency of three shooters across the top with no “U’s” or “V’s”. Playing in Boca Raton, Florida, as you can imagine, becomes very hot and humid. The three shooters across the top allow me to be consistent even in the extreme heat. I also like my pocket a little higher, in the upper middle of the head, which allows me to maintain a solid level of hold.
Kyle Harrison
Ohio Machine. Midfield
My favorite stringing style is a mid-high pocket with two hockey lace “U’s” and one straight nylon for the shooter setup. My stick’s whip is around a 4 out of 10 and its hold is about 7 out of 10.
Davey Emala
Boston Cannons. Midfield
The most important part of a pocket for me is making sure the stringing and release of the ball stays consistent. For this reason, I go with a high pocket and 2 or 3 shooting strings. I don’t usually use a “V”, because I want to get the ball in and out quickly without it getting stuck too low.
I use an STX Surgeon 500 head and since I string my own sticks, I know the exact holes I put the sidewall strings through to get the amount of hold and feel I need. I string the pocket very tightly across the top of the head so the ball doesn’t hit the top of the plastic and so that the pocket doesn’t lose any tension as I break it in.
So what exactly do the strings in a stick do? : lacrosse
The NCCA and US Lacrosse downloadable rulebooks define the strings in literal non-lacrosse terms, but it’s a tough read.
Shooting strings are essentially horizontal laces woven into the stringing to adjust how the stick throws. The number, spacing, and change-in-tightness-string-to-string affect the release of the ball. They’re not required to be there, and some pockets, like the one I strung in with the orange and blue mesh(red shaft) in this pic, do not need them to work right: http://i.imgur.com/czOWami.jpg Your explanation is fine, just a little basic.
In modern stick construction you typically see 3 types of string:
Crosslace: thinnest, used to weave most of a traditional pocket. A few strings in a core surrounded by a woven sheath)
Sidewall: middle thickness, used to attach the sidewall of the stick to mesh, or the first row of traditionally-strung crosslace. Also typically used to attach the pocket to the top of the head. Woven throughout. It can also be used for shooting strings. I’ve even built traditional pockets using this stuff doubled-up instead of leathers.
Topstring: Thickest string. Seems to be less popular now. Used, of course, as a top string, holding the pocket to the top of the head of the stick. Can be used as shooting string (many women’s sticks are factory strung with Topstring/Toplace as shooting strings). Similar construction to the crosslace, but much thicker.
…And these 2:
Hockey Laces: Mostly used as shooting strings in men’s sticks, Also popular for the bottom string, which holds the mesh to the bottom of the head of the stick.
Leather: Vertically oriented in the stick, the backbone of the traditional pocket. Also, thinner leather used to be common for topstring. My first stick, a Brine Shotgun circa 1992, had this.
Definitely play around. Buy a used ebay special head or one of the ‘mystery heads’ from lacrossemonkey, and a bunch of stringing stuff and have a go at it.

The stories of the origin of sports games are filled with myths and legends
Golf
WWW. BUGAGA.RU
The origins of golf are hotly debated. All the credit is attributed to themselves by the Scots and, I must say, they have a certain right to this. The modern education of the game began in the middle of the 15th century in Scotland. The rules of the time included swinging the club over the ball and moving it from point A to point B, using as few moves as possible.
However, there is evidence that the roots of the game go back to the small town of Loenen aan de Vecht in the Netherlands, when the game was played there in 1297.This year was the start of an annual tradition where, on Boxing Day (December 26), the townspeople played a game called “colf”. The game consisted of two teams of 4 people who took turns hitting a wooden ball with a wooden stick in the direction of several consecutive targets.
In addition to the 1927 mention of “colph”, there is other evidence of golf-like games played throughout the Netherlands centuries before the first mention of golf in Scottish literature in 1636.However, as stated earlier, there is a heated debate on this issue, and many Scots do not believe that this is true.
Hockey (on ice)
Canadians are generally considered polite and modest people, However, there is something that many Canadians can proudly and emotionally boast of – that ice hockey is their national heritage. According to them, this is their game. They are the best at it, and they came up with it.
However, according to one book published in 2014, hockey probably originated in England. There are references to this game dating back to the early 1790s, and furthermore, it remains unclear who exactly invented the game. The game is known to have been popular in England for centuries. Famous people who played hockey include King Edward VII and Charles Darwin.
With regard to why the game was named that way, there is a theory that a cork plug was originally used as a puck. Corks were commonly used as stoppers for beer kegs, and the popular drink of the time was hock ale.
The reason Canada is often associated with hockey is because the first public match was staged in Montreal on March 3, 1875. Before that, this game was just played on the occasion.
Rugby
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
Rugby allegedly got its start in 1876 when 16-year-old William Webb Ellis was playing football at Rugby School in Warwickshire (Warwickshire), England, picked up the ball and ran with it. Unfortunately, this story cannot be true, because Ellis died in 1872, that is, 4 years before the events that are attributed to him.
In reality, the game actually originated in a school in the city of Rugby, and this was facilitated by the head of the school, Thomas Arnold. The rules were first written in 1845 and the game is believed to have grown out of football, but it remains unclear who was the first person to pick up the ball and run with it.
After graduating from school, the students who learned the game wanted to continue playing it as adults. This was how the first inter-county games were organized, leading to the formation of the first clubs, which in turn led to the formation of the International Rugby Football Board in 1884.
Cricket
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
For many North Americans, cricket is a bit mysterious and seems like a rather complicated game. However, cricket is loved in many other countries around the world, attracting billions of spectators. In fact, it is the second most popular sport in the world.
Cricket is believed to have originated in the 13th century in the English countryside, where it was played by shepherds. The goal was the gate of a sheep pen, and a ball made of rags or wool was driven into the target. The opposing player had to use a curved shepherd’s cane to hit the ball and prevent it from hitting the target.
The game gained popularity throughout the region and continued to be played for centuries. The first recorded cricket match (with 11 players on each team) took place in 1697 in Sussex. His prize fund was 50 guineas.
Eight years later, the first inter-counties match took place with the teams of Kent and Surrey.Probably, the rules already existed at that time, but the oldest rules of the game known to experts date back to 1744.
Tennis
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
It is believed that even the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans played a peculiar form of tennis. However, the origins of modern tennis date back to around 1000 AD, when monks began to play it in a French monastery. They played with their hands and a wooden ball, so the game was more like volleyball.
The netting was usually a rope stretched across the yard. This is also where the name of this sports game was born. During the game, the monks shouted “shadows” (“tenez”), which in French means “hold!”, While throwing the ball.
Over the next two centuries, the game gained popularity throughout Europe, and by the 13th century there were already 1,800 indoor courts. By 1500, wooden racket frames tied with strings made from sheep’s intestines, as well as balls made of cork, became widespread.
However, this game was significantly different from modern tennis, which appeared in 1873, when the rules of the game were first published. In 1877, the first tennis tournament took place in Wimbledon, at which a decision was made on the form of refereeing and the tennis method of scoring was adopted.
Basketball
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
We bet it came as no surprise to you that Canadians claim to be the inventors of hockey. However, did you know that Canadians actually invented one of America’s most beloved sports games, basketball?
Dr. James Naismith of Almonte, Ontario, was born in 1861.After several years as a lumberjack, he earned a degree in physical education from McGill University in Montreal. After graduation, he moved to the United States, where he got a job at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.
There he was instructed to find a suitable occupation for a group of “irreparable”. Winters in New England were chilly and the boys were forced to stay indoors: they quickly got bored with indoor games they played all day.Naismith developed basketball from a game called “Duck on a Rock”, which he played as a child. Naismith took two fruit baskets from the janitor, which he hung on opposite sides of the gym, and used a soccer ball.
The first game took place on December 21, 1891 and ended 1-0. In the end, holes were cut at the bottom of the baskets, because the janitor was tired of going up the stairs every time to take out the ball.
Since then, the game has grown in popularity and Naismith lived to see basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936 in Berlin. The creator of this sports game passed away on November 28, 1939.
Baseball
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
The most common legend about baseball is that it was invented in Cooperstown, New York, in the summer of 1839 by Abner Doubleday. Having come up with the game, Doubleday went further and became a hero of the American Civil War.The only problem is that it’s not true. In 1839, a man with that name and surname lived in West Point (West Point).
Baseball probably evolved from two English games. The first game, called English rounders, was a children’s game that came to New England with the colonists, and the second was cricket.
The founding year of modern baseball is 1845, when a group of New Yorkers formed the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. The most influential member of the club was a bank clerk named Alexander Joy Cartwright, who came up with many of the rules that became the foundation of baseball.
American Football
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
The first game, which eventually became American football, was played between Princeton and Rutgers on November 6, 1869. However, it was more of a football match. After the game, the Yale people developed their own sports game and called it “The Boston Game”.
It was a bit like football, but if a player was chased by an opponent, he could pick up an oval ball and run with it, or throw it away, or pass it. If a player from the opposing team did not run after him, then he should have kicked the ball.
On May 14 and 15, 1874, the Yale hosted the McGill University team from Montreal, which also had their own set of rules for football. On the first day, they played the Boston Game. On the second day, they played a “McGill version” of football, which had more rugby elements. Each team had 11 players, they played with an oval ball, and the player could pick up the ball and run with it at any moment.
After two games, the Yale team decided they liked the McGill version better and accepted the rules. Yes, you read that correctly: the fundamentals of American football were developed by a Canadian university.
Football
WWW.BUGAGA.RU
Football is the most popular sports game in the world today, and perhaps because it is an innate part of human life.Games like soccer can be dated back to 2500 BC, when people in ancient Egypt kicked a ball during a fertility festival.
In China from 476 to 221 BC people played a game called jichu, which roughly translates to kick the ball. The idea of the game was to throw a leather ball stuffed with feathers through a cloth hung between two posts. Players could use any part of their body, except for the hands. Warriors played this game to keep fit.
A similar game was also played in ancient Rome. Each team had 27 players, and all they had to do was get the ball into the other team’s goal. And since the action took place in ancient Rome, people were often injured and killed while playing, which sounds much more exciting than watching modern football.
Football-like games continued to be played until the Middle Ages, and the modern era of football began in 1863. Then rugby football and football split from each other, and the Football Association was formed in England. This governing body has developed most of the rules and guidelines that gave birth to modern football.

Scenario of the summer entertainment “Journey across the Lukomorye” dedicated to the birthday of A.S. Pushkin
While the children are gathering at the site, the audio recording of the poem “At Lukomorya green oak … ” is turned on.
Presenter : There lived 216 years ago – there was one little boy Sasha. But he didn’t go to kindergarten like you did. With him sat a nanny whose name was Arina Rodionovna. On quiet evenings, at sunset, she told him fairy tales : many different interesting, funny and sad fairy tales. Having become a great poet, A.P. Pushkin wrote many works, including his wonderful fairy tales.
I love Pushkin’s creations ,
And this is not a secret at all.
His poems, poems
There was no more beautiful and no more!
We have been reading his fairy tales since childhood,
They have the heat of the soul, the nature of paint.
Goodness blooms in them, malice withers away.
There is a Russian spirit in them, they smell of Russia.
And today I suggest you go on a journey along unknown paths to the wonderful world of A.S. Pushkin . You ask, how do we do it? I have a magic wand (shows) Close your eyes and I will say magic words
Magic wand one, two, three
Take us to a fairy tale!
Children close their eyes. An oak tree opens.
Here we are in Lukomorye .
At Lukomorya a green oak ,
A golden chain on an oak volume
And day and night, a scientist cat
Everything goes around in a chain….
– Wait, there is an oak tree, there is a chain on it. Where is the cat? Did he run away to another fairy tale?
Music plays, a learned cat appears with a book.
Cat :
Hello guys! I am a learned cat.
Cats and cats speak
They like to bask on the window
They like cream and biscuits
But they don’t like adventures.
I am quite the opposite
I am not in vain – a scientist cat!
I am an adventurer at heart
And a bit of an artist
But – I emphasize, personally
I studied perfectly
And that’s why – now,
I am quite a learned cat.
– Why did you come to me at Lukomorye ?
Host : Dear cat, we decided to go on a journey through Pushkin’s fairy tales .
Cat : Murr! It is wonderful! I just have a serious assignment for you. The fact is that our fabulous oak in Lukomorye has lost its magical power. To return it, you need to collect the magic oak leaves, which scattered according to the tales of A.S. Pushkin .Are you ready to embark on Journey , where dangerous and challenging missions await you? (Yes) Then I have to check your readiness.
There are portraits of famous writers and poets on the tree. Please select a portrait of A.S. Pushkin . (children choose)
And now for about
I am making riddles for you.
Agree without fear!
Let us recall Pushkin’s tales ,
Both heroes and names.
Ready? Attention!
1) Here is a blue sea, here is a seashore.
The old man went to the sea, he will throw the net,
He will catch someone and ask for something
But the guys’ greed does not lead to good.
And the matter will end with the same trough,
But not new, but old, broken
“THE TALE OF THE FISHERMAN AND THE FISH
2) A little danger is visible where.
Faithful watchman as if from a dream
Stir, wake up,
Turn around to that side,
And shouts : “Kiri – ku – ku!
Reign lying on your side! ”
( “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” )
3) Three maidens under the window
Spun late in the evening
And the fourth maid,
Say, a miracle craftswoman,
Did not spin or weave,
a worked wonders.
My question is quite simple :
What is the name of that fairy tale?
(The Tale of Tsar Saltan)
4) Going to a bachelorette party,
And the queen dressing up
Before her mirror she spoke to him :
My light, mirror, tell me,
Yes, report the whole truth.
(The Tale of the Dead Princess and 7 Bogatyrs)
– You know very well the tales of A.S. Pushkin .
The most important test is the warm-up before the road. Now let’s check if you can move like cats and cats.
Dance “Cats are not like people” (verse and chorus)
Cat : I think you are completely ready for the trip . It’s time for us to hit the road along unknown paths Lukomorya . On the way you will meet the heroes of A.S. Pushkin’s fairy tales . After completing their tasks, you will receive magical oak leaves. Each team must collect 5 oak leaves. When you have all the leaves, we will meet at the fabulous oak tree. Here are your route sheets. Have a good trip!
1 Station “The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish” .
– Hello, grandpa! Can you tell us where we got to?
Old man : How can I tell you cute ones? I will give you a hint and show. After all, I’m not just sitting here, I’m fixing my net, as soon as I finish the work, I’ll go catch a gold fish, let it fulfill my desire.
Presenter : Guys, you probably already guessed what this fairy tale is? ( “The Tale of the Goldfish” ).
– What wish do you want to make?
Old man : I want to become young, but the old woman, so that she becomes kind again.
Presenter : Why do you want to become a young grandfather?
Old man : And then, that there is no strength to drag the net out of the sea, you have to fish, otherwise my old woman does not give the old man peace of mind. The fish fulfilled all her wishes. Do you remember what my old woman asked? (Children list) .
Presenter : Don’t be sad grandfather. I think the guys can help you. Guys, can we help grandfather catch fish? What do we need for this? I suggest that you split into 2 teams and show what skillful fishermen we are.
Game “Let’s catch fish”
Run to the pool, take 1 fish and go back. Whose team is faster.
Old man : Oh, well done, you guys.Or maybe you can help me build a boat too? I’ll catch so many fish then!
Presenter : Guys, can we help?
Old man : You see, there are materials from which to build a boat.
Game Building a Boat
Old Man : Thank you guys! They helped the old man. Now my old woman will surely be pleased.
Game Waves
Old Man : Now turn into waves.Listen carefully and change the waves just like in my fairy tale.
1. An old man lived with his old woman by the very blue sea.
(the sea is calm, the waves are slightly lapping, barely rising above the floor) .
2. When he went to the blue sea, he saw – the sea was playing a little.
(waves increase, slightly rise above the floor) .
3. So he went to the blue sea, the blue sea became clouded, the old man went to the sea – the blue sea turned black.
(children constantly raise their hands off the floor, movements become faster) .
4. Here he goes to the blue sea, sees a black storm on the sea : so angry waves swelled up, and howl howling they go. The fish said nothing, just splashed its tail and went into the deep sea.
(waves calm down, children start to smile) .
Old man : How much I’ve heard in the world about various miracles,
I didn’t know that there is no more wonderful smiles and happiness in your eyes.
And now it’s time for me to return to my old woman.
I have to say goodbye to you.
For your help, I will give you a magic oak leaf. Goodbye! Have a good trip!

2nd variant

What is lacrosse and how does it develop in Russia – Tatiana’s Day
Today there are a huge number of sports disciplines in the world – 131 sports are registered only at the national level. In fact, there are many more of them, we have not even heard of many of them. I have been interested in lacrosse for a long time, and I do not understand why it is little known in Russia.
Lacrosse is a contact team game. Mandatory equipment for her is a small weighty rubber ball and clubs with a long handle, the top of which is braided with a loose net. The goal of the game is to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal using a stick. At first glance, the rules are simple, but the sport is very dynamic and entertaining, and besides, it has a rich history.
Lacrosse originated a long time ago in North America, using this game to train warriors and resolve tribal conflicts. The number of players on one team often exceeded several hundred, and the size of the field reached several kilometers. But on a professional level, lacrosse began to spread in 1867, when the first club was organized in Montreal, Canada. By the way, its name comes from the French word lacrosse, that is, “hockey stick”.
Throughout the history of this sport, lacrosse was twice included in the list of Olympic disciplines – in 1904 and 1908, and both times the medals were taken by athletes from Canada. After that, lacrosse could be seen at the Olympics as demonstration performances, and since 1967 international competitions have been held.
There are more than thirty national lacrosse federations in the world, most in Canada, the USA and Europe. One of those who in our country knows almost everything about this sport is a member of the Russian national lacrosse team, a multiple participant in international competitions, a physical education teacher at the Moscow secondary school No. 648 named after A.G. Karlova Dmitry Khamin.
– Dmitry Olegovich, how did you come to lacrosse?
– In 2012, I came up with a game with a can of Pringles chips and a tennis ball. I liked it very much, the children too, but it seemed that the game lacked dynamism. Then I decided that she should be more contactable. At that moment I remembered about lacrosse, which I learned about from a film that was very popular in my youth, found the name of the game, the team in Moscow and began to study.
– You have been coaching a children’s team for the sixth year. How did you get the idea to create it?
– Since at that time I had already been working as a physical education teacher for three years, I thought that the children should like lacrosse: they even played the game with the jar with pleasure. In the beginning, I had only three clubs and 15 people. The first time was difficult, but with the growth of interest in the game, the number of athletes and equipment it became easier. The equipment was given to us by active athletes or presented as a reward at competitions.
– Your children’s team is called MoscowYouthLacrosseClubBULLDOGS.Who came up with the name and why is it exactly that?
– The fact is that at that time I had a French Bulldog, but he seemed too cute to me to be a symbol of the team, so the English Bulldog was chosen as the logo. Still, he looks more severe.
– What qualities does lacrosse develop in a child?
– First of all, lacrosse is valued for its mutual assistance. It seems to me that in any team sport only good people remain.I have been traveling the world for many years and playing lacrosse, but very rarely have I met mean and evil people among athletes. Representatives of different professions play lacrosse: you can meet investors, decorators, big businessmen, and top managers, but everyone is a very positive person.
– Lacrosse is considered a pretty tough sport. How often do athletes get seriously injured?
– There were two fractures in my memory, including mine. I broke my collarbone on my first game.
– More than a hundred years ago, lacrosse was removed from the list of Olympic sports. Are any measures being taken now to bring him back to the Olympics?
– Now the process of returning to the Olympics is very actively lobbied by the International Lacrosse Federation. Its workers are constantly traveling the world, opening new clubs, bringing lacrosse to countries where it was not available before.
– Our state implements programs for the development of children’s sports, but how is lacrosse developing?
– Unfortunately, the state is not helping the development of lacrosse today.
– What structures did you try to interact with in order to get support from the state?
– We communicated with the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, applied for the recognition of lacrosse as an official sport, because now it is only a direction. Until lacrosse is recognized, we certainly face a lot of difficulties. Even Olympic sports are not always allocated a budget, what can we say about unrecognized ones? Nevertheless, the Ministry of Sports communicated with us, explained in which direction we need to move, emphasized the need to open even more clubs, and increase the number of children’s and adult teams. When the number of players reaches five hundred or a thousand, the dialogue can be continued.
– How do you personally contribute to the promotion of lacrosse?
– Actually a lot. I have been an active player for many years now. I believe that we are guiding young lacrosse players in the right way: we not only teach them how to play, but also make them worthy members of society. For example, this year many players come back to us, who for some reason stopped practicing.
