The free market of the Premier Lacrosse League will be full of “Chaos”
“Chaos” has been one of the main topics of discussion in the League over the past few seasons. This is a team that, methodically, wins back the regular season and begins to gain momentum in the playoffs. They have fought for the championship title in the finals for the last three seasons. Ironically, they’ve been a pattern of consistency since 2020, but looking at the Premier Lacrosse League’s free agent roster this offseason, this Chaos team could look very different next year.
Chaos leads the PLL in terms of free players this offseason. They still have a small core that are under contract, such as Josh Byrne, Dane Smith, Blaze Riorden and Jack Rowlett. And obviously the four players mentioned earlier are vital to a team, but when you have 16 players going into the free market, it takes a lot of effort to keep a winning pedigree.
Offensive free agents:
Wes Berg – Chase Frazier – Joe Recitars – Curtis Dixon
The biggest loss from this group of players could be Frazier’s departure. He perfectly optimizes the game of “Chaos” and provides great support to the guys on the field. Joe Recitars hasn’t played this season, and Berg has only played four games.
Attacking midfield:
Tanner Cook – Kevin Crowley – Kyle Jackson – Mac O’Keeffe – Challen Rogers – Ryan Smith
This is the group of players whose changes will have the biggest impact on the team’s off-season. Mac O’Keeffe has truly developed into a powerful two-point threat and continues to improve his game, becoming a solid linebacker for Chaos.
Challen Rogers would be a huge loss for the team. The Toronto Rock NLL had a strong second half of the season and also played well in the playoffs. Ryan Smith seems to be the forgotten linebacker in Chaos, but his 13 points and 53% shooting in the regular season would have been a big loss for the offense.
Defense / midfield with long stick.
CJ Costabile – Jarrod Neumann – Matt Reece
This is the line where Chaos can look for other options in the free agent market or in the draft without fear of change, a place in the bottom half of the league in defensive numbers, proof of that.
Players at the drop point:
Max Adler – Tommy Kelly
Of course Chaos still has a contract with Jerry Ragonese, but Tommy Kelly and Max Adler were the main players teams on site in 2022 year. Kelly did well during the first half of the season and actually finished with a higher face-off winning percentage than Adler. Adler has played really well at times, but at times he seems to struggle with the PLL’s throw-in rules. Both of them may still be on the team for next season, but Chaos should definitely look for other options in the market.
Goalkeeper position:
Austin Caut
Unfortunately for Caut, he plays with one of the best goalkeepers in the world. The former Lizards goaltender was on the All-Star team in 2018. And now, given the market for other goalkeepers and the game that Blaze Riorden is showing, Kout may not have much of a chance to stay.
Of course, there’s still some time before the free agent market opens (no official date yet), but Chaos will definitely have a lot of work to do this offseason. Maybe this roster will come back completely intact, and they will make another push to the second championship title, or maybe they will completely rebuild the team around their “core four players”. In any case, this off-season of the Premier Lacrosse League will be full of “Chaos”.
