A former University of Virginia lacrosse player serving time for the murder of his ex-girlfriend testified Wednesday in a wrongful death lawsuit that the only mental image he has of her death was of blood coming out of her nose, and that he doesn’t remember breaking into her room and leaving her fatally injured.
George Huguely, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 killing of his on-again, off-again girlfriend Yeardley Love, a member of the UVA women’s lacrosse team, took the stand in the lawsuit filed by Sharon Love. Yeardley’s mother is the administrator of her daughter’s estate and her lawsuit seeks $29.5 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages.
Wednesday was the sole day Huguely was scheduled to appear in court after an earlier ruling determined he didn’t have the right to attend each day of the trial.
Dressed in a plain white, button-down shirt, blue jeans and sporting shoulder-length hair and a short, cropped beard, Huguely told Paul Bekman — the attorney for the Loves — he remembered very little due to his excessive drinking, The Daily Progress of Charlottesville reported.
“I was drinking a lot all the time, all the way from my freshman year to my senior year,” Huguely said. “I was drinking all the time. It was out of control.
“
Over the weekend of Love’s murder, Huguely said he drank frequently and excessively, leading to him having little memory of the night of May 2, 2010, and the early morning of May 3. Comparing his memory to a slideshow, Huguely said it was as though 98% of the slides had been removed. He claimed to not remember breaking into her room and leaving her with multiple external injuries and a fatal head injury.
Much of the testimony focused on an email exchange which started with Love sending an apology. Huguely responded with an angry message filled with insults and an accusation that Love had sex with another man to hurt him. In one of the last emails in the exchange, Huguely wrote “I should have killed you” in response to Love. Huguely said he had not meant that statement to be literal.
Huguely’s attorney, Matthew Green, talked about the defendant’s time in prison, which has involved completing alcohol and drug treatment programs. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison when he was convicted and is now about halfway through the sentence.
Toward the end of his testimony, Huguely turned to Love’s mother and sister and apologized for killing her.
“I miss her and think about her every day. I would do anything to take back that night,” he said. “I take responsibility for what happened to her and I should have never gone over to her apartment that night.”
The apology caused Love’s sister to shake her head before quietly trying to stifle a sob.
Sharon Love initially filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2012, but it was voluntarily dismissed years later after court rulings determined that Huguely was not entitled to coverage under a $6 million homeowners insurance policy held by his family.
A new lawsuit filed in 2018 dropped negligence claims, but added a claim alleging that an assault and battery by Huguely was the proximate cause of Love’s death. The lawsuit argues that punitive damages are warranted because the physical force used by Huguely and his failure to act by leaving her bleeding, injured and without any medical attention mean that he acted “with actual malice” and in “concious disregard for the safety and life of Love, thereby willfully causing Love’s injuries.

Nearly 12 years after University of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love was found dead in her off-campus apartment, the man who was convicted of second-degree murder in her killing is headed back to court for a civil trial in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Yeardley’s mother.
Jury selection is expected in Charlottesville Circuit Court on Monday in a trial that will seek to hold George Huguely liable in the death of Love. The lawsuit seeks $29.5 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages.
Love and Huguely were both seniors who were weeks away from graduating. They were known for their play on UVA’s nationally ranked men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, but they were also known for their volatile relationship.
Prosecutors said in May 2010, Huguely kicked a hole in Love’s bedroom door, then beat her after a day of golf and binge drinking, enraged that she had had a relationship with a lacrosse player from North Carolina.
A medical examiner concluded that the 22-year-old Love died of blunt force trauma to her head, but defense and prosecution experts offered differing medical opinions on the lethal consequences of her injuries.
The civil trial is expected to include many of the same witnesses, although many of them are expected to testify in videotaped depositions instead of in person.

Huguely’s attorney, Matthew Green, said the defense will acknowledge that Huguely’s assault and battery caused Love’s death and that her family is entitled to compensatory damages in an amount to be decided by the jury. But he said the defense does not believe punitive damages are appropriate.
Green said Huguely is expected to testify. He said Huguely will be brought to court from prison on the day he is scheduled to testify, but not on the other days of the trial.
Jurors in Huguely’s 2012 first-degree murder trial viewed a police interrogation video that was recorded hours after Love’s body was found in her apartment.
“I have to tell you something,” Det. Lisa Reeves told Huguely after he had answered questions about the night’s events.
“She’s dead. You killed her.”
“She’s dead? How is she dead?” Huguely asked repeatedly. “Please, please tell me she is not dead.”
“George, I wish I could, but I can’t do that. She’s 22-years-old and the life’s gone out of her,” Reeves said.
Before finding out Love was dead, Huguely told police in his video-taped statement that when he went to see his former girlfriend the night of her death he told her to “chill out” and “shook her a little.”
“We were just going to talk,” Huguely told the officer in the video.

The company showed the interior of a new generation sedan: the model received a 30-inch display that combines a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen of a multimedia system.
Buick LaCrosse large sedan of the current generation appeared in 2016. However, since then the model has managed to change its “habitat”: in 2019-m it left the American market because of “modest” demand; in addition, General Motors, which owns the brand, continues to focus on the SUV segment, relieving the “home” line from sedans and hatchbacks. Now the LaCrosse model is presented only in the “celestial” market, a new generation “four-door” will soon be presented here.

The appearance of the new Buick LaCrosse sedan was declassified in December last year: exterior photos were published in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry. The model received a completely new and unusual design of the front. As Kolesa.ru reported earlier, much of the design is borrowed from the Buick Century: the new items have similar stampings on the hood, the head optics have received a different shape, and a large trapezoidal grille diverges to the side closer to the lower part of the front bumper.

In the course of the change in the generation of the model, the stern was also changed: the trunk lid received a new shape, as well as the taillights, which are now interconnected by a wide strip. Above is the brand logo. The creators differently designed the lower part of the rear bumper with reflectors and exhaust pipes: they were given a slightly elongated shape.
Another next-generation LaCrosse was equipped with new 18- and 19-inch wheels of the original design.
Buick has now officially unveiled the interior of the new LaCrosse sedan. Judging by the pictures, most of the front panel will be occupied by a large curved display with a resolution of 6K, which combines a digital “tidy” and a touchscreen of the infotainment system, its diagonal is 30 inches. The interior design features features borrowed from the interior of the Buick Electra E5.
The model received “internal” door handles in the form of unusual boomerangs, LED lighting, as well as a “floating” center console with an integrated panel for wireless charging of smartphones. Also in the cabin there is a touch-sensitive climate control unit and a number of physical buttons, including on the driver’s door.
With the change of generation, the Buick LaCrosse lost in length: this dimension is 4996 mm, while its predecessor had 5026 mm. At the same time, the distance between the axles remained the same – 2905 mm.
This means that the “shortening” of the new Buick LaCrosse will not affect the legroom of the driver and passengers.
The engine range of the new generation large sedan will include a pair of turbo engines – 1.5 and 2.0 liters. The basic version has a return of 179 hp, and the power of the second engine is 230 hp. Recall that in the line of “four-doors” of the current generation, the “junior” is 169-a strong turbo engine with a volume of 1.5 liters, and for the top versions a 237-horsepower 2.0-liter “turbo four” is provided.
