This state-of-the-art facility offers a wide range of amenities and services designed to promote physical health, mental well-being, and community engagement.
REC Operating Hours
During the summer months, the REC maintains the following schedule:
- Monday-Friday: 8am-8pm
- Saturday: 12pm-6pm
- Sunday: Closed
It’s important to note that the REC will be closed on May 29th and July 4th. For any inquiries, you can reach out to the REC office at 608.785.5225 or via email at [email protected].
The REC Fitness Center: A Cutting-Edge Workout Experience
Opened in the Fall of 2018, the REC Fitness Center is a testament to UW-La Crosse’s commitment to providing top-notch fitness facilities for its community. Spanning an impressive 15,000 square feet, this modern fitness space is divided into six distinct training zones, each equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to cater to various workout preferences and fitness goals.
Six Specialized Training Zones
The REC Fitness Center’s layout is designed to optimize workout efficiency and cater to diverse fitness needs. Here’s a breakdown of the six training zones:
- Machines Zone
- Cardio Zone
- Free Weight Zone
- The Turf
- The Racks
- Personal Training Room
Each zone is carefully curated to provide a comprehensive fitness experience, allowing users to target specific muscle groups, improve cardiovascular health, or engage in functional training exercises.
Machines Zone: Precision and Guidance in Strength Training
The Machines Zone features an impressive array of 35 different selectorized cable machines. These machines offer a safe and guided approach to strength training, making them ideal for beginners and those recovering from injuries. The variety of machines ensures that users can target every major muscle group effectively.
Are cable machines effective for building muscle? Yes, cable machines are highly effective for muscle building. They provide constant tension throughout the range of motion, allowing for smooth and controlled movements. This constant tension helps to maximize muscle engagement and promote hypertrophy.
Cardio Zone: Elevate Your Heart Rate and Endurance
With 55 pieces of cardio equipment, the Cardio Zone is designed to cater to all cardiovascular fitness needs. The diverse selection includes:
- Ellipticals
- Treadmills
- Rowers
- Stationary bikes
- Stair climbers
This variety allows users to choose their preferred method of cardio exercise, whether they’re looking for low-impact options like ellipticals or high-intensity workouts on the stair climbers.
How long should a cardio session last for optimal health benefits? For general health benefits, the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week. This can be broken down into 30-minute sessions five days a week for moderate activity, or 25-minute sessions three days a week for vigorous activity.
Free Weight Zone: Unleash Your Strength Potential
The Free Weight Zone is a powerhouse for strength enthusiasts. It offers:
- Dumbbells ranging from 2.5-50lb
- 1 Squat Rack
- 10 Fixed Curl bars ranging from 20-60lb
This zone is perfect for those looking to build raw strength, improve muscle definition, or engage in powerlifting training. The variety of free weights allows for a wide range of exercises and progressive overload techniques.
Why are free weights often preferred over machines by experienced lifters? Free weights are often favored by experienced lifters because they engage more muscle groups, including stabilizer muscles, leading to more functional strength gains. They also allow for a greater range of motion and more natural movement patterns, which can translate better to real-world activities and sports performance.
The Turf: Functional Training and Athletic Performance
The Turf is a unique feature of the REC Fitness Center, designed to accommodate functional training, stretching, and core exercises. This versatile space includes:
- A 25 x 8-yard piece of artificial turf
- 10 yards of rig system with monkey bars, ninja grip training, TRX, and resistance bands
- 40 Kettlebells ranging from 5-70lb
- 20 medicine balls ranging from 5-20lb
- 2 soft adjustable plyo-boxes ranging from 20-30 inches
Additionally, users can check out various accessories such as foam rollers, mini therabands, ab rollers, La Crosse balls, lifting straps, and weightlifting and powerlifting belts.
How does functional training differ from traditional strength training? Functional training focuses on exercises that mimic real-life movements and activities, often involving multiple joints and muscle groups simultaneously. This type of training aims to improve overall performance in daily tasks and sports, whereas traditional strength training typically isolates specific muscle groups. Functional training often incorporates more unstable environments and varied movement patterns, which can lead to improved balance, coordination, and core strength.
The Racks: Powerlifting and Olympic Lifting Paradise
For serious strength athletes and powerlifters, The Racks zone is a dream come true. This area is equipped with:
- 7 dual-sided squat racks (14 individual stations)
- 7 designated inlaid platforms for barbell work
- 1 Eleiko designated Olympic training platform
- 1 Texas Strength Systems competition powerlifting combo rack
- Dumbbells ranging from 10lb to 125lb
- Leg press, glute ham raise machine, preacher curl benches, and plate-loaded glute trainer
This comprehensive setup allows for a wide range of compound lifts and specialized strength training exercises.
What are the benefits of compound lifts in a strength training program? Compound lifts, such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses, offer numerous benefits in a strength training program. They engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, leading to greater overall strength gains and calorie burn. These exercises also improve coordination, balance, and functional strength. Additionally, compound lifts are more time-efficient, allowing you to work multiple muscle groups in a single exercise, which is ideal for those with limited time for workouts.
Personal Training Room: Tailored Fitness Guidance
For those seeking personalized attention and expert guidance, the REC Fitness Center offers a dedicated Personal Training Room. This private space is designed for one-on-one or small group training sessions and includes:
- A squat rack
- Cable machine
- Dumbbells
The room can accommodate up to two clients at a time, ensuring focused attention from the personal trainer.
How can personal training accelerate fitness progress? Personal training can significantly accelerate fitness progress through several key factors. Trainers provide expert guidance on proper form and technique, reducing the risk of injury and ensuring exercises are performed effectively. They create personalized workout plans tailored to individual goals, fitness levels, and any physical limitations. Personal trainers also offer accountability and motivation, helping clients stay consistent with their workouts. Additionally, they can provide nutritional advice and lifestyle recommendations to support overall health and fitness goals.
Additional Facilities: Outdoor Connection and EZONE
Beyond the Fitness Center, UW-La Crosse offers additional recreational facilities to cater to diverse interests:

It provides a structured environment for competitive gaming, fostering teamwork, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. Esports can improve hand-eye coordination, reaction times, and cognitive abilities. Additionally, it creates a sense of community among gaming enthusiasts and can lead to career opportunities in the growing esports industry. For some students, it may serve as a stress-relief activity, balancing academic pressures with recreational pursuits.
Seasonal Facilities: Climbing Wall and Mitchell Hall Pool
While not operational during the summer months, UW-La Crosse also boasts additional recreational facilities that are available during the regular academic year:
Climbing Wall
The climbing wall is closed for the summer but provides an exciting vertical challenge during the academic year. For information about its regular operating hours, contact the REC office at 608.785.5225 or [email protected].
Mitchell Hall Pool

What are the unique benefits of rock climbing as a form of exercise? Rock climbing offers a unique combination of physical and mental benefits. Physically, it provides a full-body workout, engaging muscles in the arms, legs, core, and back. It improves strength, flexibility, and balance while also enhancing cardiovascular fitness. Mentally, climbing challenges problem-solving skills, as climbers must plan their routes and movements. It also builds confidence and can reduce stress and anxiety. The sport fosters a sense of community and can be adapted to various skill levels, making it accessible to beginners while still challenging experienced climbers.
