The Fundamentals of Lacrosse Goalie Play
Becoming a proficient lacrosse goalie requires a solid foundation in the fundamentals. Coach Damon, the creator of Lax Goalie Rat (LGR), emphasizes the importance of sharing effective techniques, being honest about what doesn’t work, and leading by example. For those new to the position or looking to refine their skills, understanding the basics is crucial.
Essential Skills for Lacrosse Goalies
What are the key skills a lacrosse goalie needs to master? The core competencies include:
- Proper stance and positioning
- Save techniques
- Arc play and angle management
- Communication with defenders
- Quick reflexes and hand-eye coordination
- Mental toughness and focus
Developing these skills requires consistent practice and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures on the field.
Mastering the Art of Making Saves
The primary role of a lacrosse goalie is to prevent the ball from entering the goal. How can goalies improve their save percentage? It starts with understanding the mechanics of making a save.
The Two-Part Process of Making a Save
Coach Damon breaks down the save-making process into two crucial parts:
- Part 1: Positioning and preparation
- Part 2: Execution and follow-through
By focusing on each aspect separately, goalies can refine their technique and increase their chances of making successful saves.
Perfecting Your Lacrosse Goalie Stance
A solid stance is the foundation of effective goaltending in lacrosse. What elements make up the perfect lacrosse goalie stance?
- Feet shoulder-width apart
- Knees slightly bent
- Weight on the balls of your feet
- Hands positioned in front of your body
- Head up and eyes focused on the ball
Maintaining this stance allows goalies to react quickly and move efficiently to make saves.
Understanding Angles and Arc Play in Lacrosse Goalie Strategy
Proper positioning is critical for lacrosse goalies. How can goalies optimize their chances of making saves through effective angle play?
The Importance of Arc Play
Arc play refers to the goalie’s movement along an imaginary arc in front of the goal. By adjusting their position based on the location of the ball, goalies can minimize the amount of open net visible to shooters.
Key aspects of successful arc play include:
- Understanding the relationship between the ball, goal, and goalie position
- Quick lateral movement to maintain proper angles
- Anticipating shots and adjusting position accordingly
Essential Lacrosse Goalie Drills for Skill Development
Regular practice is crucial for improving as a lacrosse goalie. What drills can goalies use to enhance their skills?
Effective Drills for Lacrosse Goalies
Coach Damon recommends a variety of drills to help goalies improve their performance:
- Rapid-fire drills to enhance reaction time
- Footwork drills for better positioning
- Hand-eye coordination exercises
- Communication drills with defenders
- Clearing and outlet pass practice
Incorporating these drills into regular training sessions can lead to significant improvements in overall goalie performance.
Developing Effective Communication Skills for Lacrosse Goalies
Communication is a vital aspect of a lacrosse goalie’s role. How can goalies improve their ability to direct the defense?
Key Elements of Goalie Communication
Effective goalie communication includes:
- Calling out offensive player positions
- Alerting defenders to potential threats
- Organizing defensive formations
- Providing encouragement and motivation to teammates
By mastering these communication skills, goalies can significantly enhance their team’s defensive performance.

“Love these guys, without them i would not be anywhere close to where I am as a goalie or player. Really gave me a love for the game and would not trade the time I spent with them for anything.”
Carl S. Goaliesmith Parent
“I could not speak more highly about Meg, Andrew, Mike, Drake and Gilly. The incredible, intense, training they offer is second-to-none. Not only are you going to get the most shots you’ll ever receive in a two hour span but they take the time to watch each cage carefully, providing thorough/thoughtful tips to all goalies. Not to mention they have the best shooters in D1 ripping on you all day.”

“Outstanding shooters and coaching. Personally, it’s a long drive to get to sessions, but always so worth it. I learn new things, get tons of reps in drills built for goalies, and am able to be active in a lacrosse goalie community that is so, so, supportive. Could not recommend more!”

“The best at what they do. Sessions are surrounded with high energy, quality shooters and a bunch of great people. They have definitely helped me improve drastically and I can’t wait to return.”

Razin’s lesson for Michkov. Severstal beat SKA in St. Petersburg – Hockey news
The Lynx spare no one: neither the leader of the East and the entire regular season, Magnitogorsk (5:2), nor CSKA (3:0). Today, the army team from the Neva fell into their “claws”, and at home, where for five years they were not inferior to the team from Cherepovets.
Lars Johansson, who returned to the goal, managed to dry 7 (!) “crackers”, missed two goals, the third flew into an empty frame. His opponent Vladislav Podyapolsky, who missed not three matches, like the Swede, but for two whole months, gave a fantastic match. Isn’t it time for the national team coaches to pay attention to him? As for Podyapolsky’s partner Dmitry Shugaev, who recently shot at the Karjala Cup.
But the magnificent goalkeeper of Severstal, who recently left the gate shut in a home match with CSKA, capitulated to Nikita Gusev. Having returned from the NHL, the sniper, not finding the support of his partners, now relies only on his shot. With his help, he brought victory to SKA in Kazan, throwing the puck into the net from an average distance. From this point, Gusev scored today, but not in the far corner, but in the near corner. The puck flew like a dumpling, which disorientated the goalkeeper.
So I remove the question of the expediency of inviting Gusev to the First Channel Cup. The team needs him. It is believed that Alexei Zhamnov and his assistants will find the right “chemistry” for the scorer, which is not possible in SKA.
Today Gusev started in a trio with Mikhail Vorobyov and “silovik” Danila Moiseev. But in the second break, Matvey Michkov, who will turn 17 in ten days, began to come out on the right flank of this link. The junior could get hold of a point for an assist to Vorobyov – Podyapolsky spoiled the mass, reacting to the utimer from a distant spot. However, Michkov finished the meeting in the black with a +1 utility factor (thanks to Gusev).
The hosts’ headquarters was not afraid to let the “masker” out on the ice two and a half minutes before the siren, when Peter had to be rescued and Johansson went to the bench. Michkov did not lose his head: at first he tried to outwit the goalkeeper with his signature shot from behind the gate, which he presented at the Karjala Cup in a match with the Czechs (the goal, however, was recorded at Voronkov’s account), and soon he went to lacrosse, but his opponents did not allow him to put the puck on hook. Still young!
Already on the first day of winter, Michkov goes to Novogorsk to the camp of the youth team, which is preparing for the MFM-2022. Center forward Nikita Guslistov received a call from Severstal. Maybe in Red Deer/Edmonton we’ll see a bunch of these forwards. Specialists say that our youth team has not had such a depth of attack for a long time.
And Severstal has never had such a bright and stable regular season.
