“He’s one of us”: what they say about young Belarusian hockey players in North America – News from Belarus
This season you can see a few more Belarusians in the NHL.
The new NHL season is about to start. Last year, there was one Belarusian in the strongest league in the world – Yegor Sharangovich. And this is an excellent indicator. However, this season, it seems that a few more Belarusians may appear in the NHL. Eight of our compatriots are in the main camps of NHL clubs, writes pressball.by.
Alexey PROTAS, Washington Capitals
Perhaps Protas is the closest to his NHL debut. The big forward had a good last season in Dynamo Minsk, got a taste of the AHL. In the KHL, Alexei showed himself as one of the best hockey players who came from North America, but in the Hershey he did not show high performance, gaining 7 points in 16 matches. Protas had a great camp last year, but he was still not ready to debut. Now they have high hopes for Alexei. He trains in flight by Nick Dowd and by TJ Oshi .
Assistant general manager of Washington Ross Mahone positively assessed the rent of the prospect to Dynamo Minsk: “Playing for Dynamo last season in the KHL was a good experience for Alexei Protas . He played about 70 last hockey year matches and it’s very good for him.” In addition to a productive club season, Protas played solidly for the Belarusian national team, even if Craig Woodcroft’s wards could not qualify for the Olympic Games: “I watched Aleksey play during the Olympic qualification. I especially remember the match with the Slovakian team: Protas looked very confident for a young guy. However, if you look at the rosters of the rivals of the Belarus national team, they are filled with more experienced, older hockey players. We will be closely monitoring all the young players from the Washington system and their progress during the season. We are going to do everything possible to ensure that these guys in the future, they could play in the NHL, but a lot depends on the young hockey players themselves: they must learn the knowledge gained in the camp and apply it in their game,” Mahone said.
Obviously, if Protas were in a franchise with much more roster problems, he could make his debut in the first games of the season. “Washington” is a strong team, with excellent selection of players, but if Protas shows himself well at the camp, then at the first opportunity he will pull himself up to the base. Alexey will probably start the season in the AHL, but he has more and more friends at the base, which means that there should be no problems with adaptation. Evgeny Kuznetsov recently said that he communicates a lot with the Belarusian: “Yes. He is a great guy. I have always said that all the guys from Ukraine and Belarus are our brothers. We are blood brothers, you can say. He is one of us. Yes, he is still a little shy, but we were all in his place. But, as I told him, everything is in his hands. And he will be able to use the situation to his advantage, “said Kuznetsov.
Dmitriy KUZMIN, Winnipeg
Winnipeg are very interested in Dinamo Minsk’s defender. A good defensive player with excellent skating, great vision of the court, but who can’t prove himself in front of the coaching staff. According to media reports, the hockey player’s visa problems are to blame. But now they are settled. Yes, a lot has been lost, but we can make a reserve for the future. “Dmitry is quite talented, with good hands, he sees the court well. “Yes, he is not the tallest player, but he has learned to use his height for good, so we are counting on him, we want to see him with us,” said the general manager. club
“Belarus wasn’t one of the strongest teams in the tournament, but they did great against stronger opponents. Also, I would like to mention Kuzmin, he played very well: he has great skating, he holds the puck well and plays on the powerplay. I’m sure that you saw the lacrosse goal that he performed at the tournament, because this puck got into all the highlights of the world championship.Besides, this kid has a strong character, good stick handling.Of course, for Kuzmin it is a challenge to play at the NHL level with such dimensions “However, to achieve the goal, the Belarusian has all the data, as well as efficiency, determination. Therefore, we believe that we made an excellent choice in favor of Kuzmin, regardless of his size,” the opinion of one of the team’s scouts.
Maxim SUSHKO, Philadelphia
This is the last year for Maxim under the contract, so it is necessary to make a breakthrough a la Sharangovich. Coaches believe in Sushko that he will be able to reach the level of at least 3-4 links of Philadelphia. “Pilots” actively let the youth to the basis, and Maxim even made his debut in the NHL last season. Therefore, everything is in the hands of Maxim.
Yevgeny OKSENTIUK, Dallas
It will be hard for a small, nimble forward to cling to the basis of Dallas, but now Oksentyuk is trying to impress the coaching staff of the Stars. While it is difficult to say how tangible his successes are. Perhaps, he is in the main camp of the NHL club – this is an excellent temporary cut-off in Evgeny’s career.
Danila KLIMOVICH, Vancouver
Belarusian striker with a great shot was taken at the beginning of the second round of the NHL draft. Decided to spend the peak — “Vancouver”, which has a big restructuring. Klimovich drew the attention of all the scouts to the JWCH when he famously began to stamp pucks. Vancouver has big plans and hopes for the Belarusian striker. They talk about him willingly: “Teams that win the Stanley Cup usually win all duels, so we need players who have a good grip on the puck. Last year this was demonstrated by Niels Haeglander . Already now we can say that Vasily Podkolzin will become such a player, and we really hope that these skills will come to Danila Klimovich . Our scouts are always looking for players who are good with the puck, keep it and take over the game. We believe that all this is in Klimovich’s game, “said the team’s general manager.
But among the scouts there are different opinions about Klimovich, but this does not bother Vancouver: “Actually, I don’t care much what they say about Danila’s game other scouts, because I myself saw him in action. He is a fairly large guy (186 cm, 92kg), has great puck handling, can keep it, he has a great shot. Already now he has all the ingredients to become a good player, but he needs time to develop. Improve puck play, martial arts won, increase speed. But the player can work on all this in parallel with how he matures and becomes stronger. These are the things that can definitely be improved.” for some time a Belarusian in the team.0003
Ilya SOLOVIEV, Calgary
One of the things you didn’t expect to see in the club’s main camp was the Calgary’s late pick. Solovyov is a solid defender who has already proven himself in the Belarusian teams, but the faith of the “lights” in their pick in the seventh round is impressive. There is little pressure on Solovyov due to the overall number in the draft, so you can safely demonstrate your solid level. The defender is clearly on the pencil of the coaching staff.
Vladislav KOLYACHONOK, Arizona
The Belarusian defender was exchanged this summer. Reasonable, with good skating and reliable defense, Kolyachonok impressed the Arizona coaching staff, and they included the Belarusian in the team’s main camp. By the way, he is the youngest among the players of his role there. So far, Kolyachonok has not been praised by the head coach, but it is noticeable that they like the Belarusian. And not far off his debut in the NHL.
Egor SHARANGOVICH, “New Jersey”
The main Belarusian star is basking in glory. Everyone is impressed after a fantastic last season. This year it is necessary to confirm the advances and expectations of the fans. Many experts speak about Sharangovich, his perfect throw, but he will separately note the kind words from his teammates. It’s doubly nice when the first number of the draft and franchise club Jack Hughes says this: “Rango (Egor Sharangovich – approx.) Had a great season. I played a lot of time on the same line with him, and I definitely think he is a great player. It’s important that he knows how to score and the Devils really need him to keep doing it.
