HARD WAY TO OLYMPUS. NATURBAN (PART 1) – Bobsleigh. Skeleton. Sleigh – Blogs
The next Olympic cycle has ended. Four years of preparation for the 2018 Olympics in Korea. Its final was not easy for Russia. The disqualification of the Russian Olympic Committee, the removal of the leaders of the national teams in many sports from the Games in Pyeongchang. The admission of the national team in a neutral status…
(photo: Russian lugers at the PyeongChang Games, South Korea)
No flag, no anthem. Without the usual staff of coaches and specialists accompanying the teams. But “Olympic athletes from Russia” passed these tests. And we started preparing for the next Games. Hoping that things will turn out differently in China in 2022.
Despite the difficulties and vicissitudes of the Olympic movement, the attitude of representatives of the world of sports towards Olympic titles and awards remains the same.
For many, an Olympic medal is a chance! A chance to write your name in history, to become famous, to prove that all the years you have not been investing all your strength, health and dreams in your sports future in vain. And financially, this is also a chance. Apartments, cars, prize money… The title of champion is an opportunity to attract the interest of sponsors, and for patrons, in turn, a chance to emphasize the glory of a successful sponsorship object and their uniqueness. But not all representatives of elite sports had the honor to try their hand at the fight for Olympic gold. Why is it not always easy to be among the conquerors of Olympus? What is needed for this and how is it done?
OLYMPIC FAMILY
The program of the modern Olympic Games includes 28 summer (including 41 disciplines) and 7 winter (including 15 disciplines) sports.
Summer Olympics program: rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, wrestling, cycling, water polo, volleyball, handball, golf, kayaking and canoeing, rowing slalom, judo, equestrianism, athletics, table tennis, sailing, swimming, beach volleyball, diving, trampolining, rugby, synchronized swimming, rock climbing, modern pentathlon, artistic gymnastics, archery, shooting, tennis, triathlon, taekwondo, weightlifting, fencing, football, field hockey, rhythmic gymnastics.
The list of Olympic Games “winter” is much shorter than : biathlon, bobsleigh, alpine skiing, curling, Nordic combined, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, luge, skeleton, speed skating, snowboarding, figure skating, freestyle, hockey, short track.
In the winter Olympic family, young sports are short track and freestyle (added in 1992), snowboarding was added last in 1998.
Luge joined the Olympic list at 1964th.
There is another category – demonstration sports. They are given a chance within the framework of the Olympic Games to show themselves, demonstrate their attractiveness, confirm the interest of the fans, draw the attention of the TV audience. At one time, the demonstration types included: bandy, icestock (a type of curling), ski ballet and even sledge racing. By the way, sports are also from the sledge family. As well as downhill on natural tracks – NATURBAN.
(photo: World Cup Naturban event in Austria)
Naturban – downhill sledding on natural tracks has long sought to make Olympic history, but so far has not reached the goal.
Meanwhile, this sport is very spectacular, extreme, not inferior in the effect of entertainment to its older brother – luge, and sometimes even superior in this regard. Spectators in Naturban can see the entire track, change their location on turns and feel the speed of an athlete rushing across the ice at arm’s length. In luge, of course, the speeds are much more extreme, but the viewer can see the athlete at the start and finish, as well as on open turns.
The main magic of luge, with replays, slow motion and spectacular falls, is television. Otherwise, we simply would not have had time to consider everything in detail. The struggle for victory is calculated in thousandths of a second. In naturban, everything takes place on an open ice track, with wooden or plastic sides, where athletes compete in the speed of passing the track.
Naturban in Russia is part of the Luge Federation, like the Olympic luge.
The Olympic prospects of naturban have been discussed since the days of the management of the International Luge Federation by the Austrian Bert Isatich. Members of the USSR’s first natural ban team today recall how they dreamed of climbing the Olympic podium. The prospect of the Olympic naturban took on a real shape with the arrival of President Leonid Garth in the FSSR. There was a hope to perform at the Games in Sochi with demonstration performances, but fate decreed otherwise. The death of the president of the FSSR pushed back the problems of natureban for some time. Elected to the post, Natalia Hart was forced to start all over again.
(photo: FSSR President Natalia Gart, Moscow, Vorobyovy Gory)
President of the Russian Luge Federation Natalia Gart:
– Naturban is even somewhat more understandable sport than luge. Close to us since childhood. Everyone flew on a sleigh from the mountains, it was a great pleasure. For our athletes, children’s hobby has become a profession, a favorite thing. The fact that naturban is not an Olympic sport is both a good thing and a bad thing. The downside is that an Olympic medal is the goal of any athlete, the highest level, the pinnacle of a career, but it is not yet available to us. But it is interesting to follow the development of sports, to be at the beginning of the path, to contribute to its development. Before us is a very ambitious task – to achieve the inclusion of naturban in the program of the Olympic Games.
Last October in Lausanne (Switzerland), we met with IOC Sports Director Keith McConnell. At this meeting, the first steps were taken in introducing the IOC to luge on natural tracks. During the meeting, preliminary options for assessing the pros and cons of luge on natural tracks as an Olympic discipline were discussed. In December, during the first stage of the Naturban World Cup in Kühtai (Austria), the organizers of the tournament and FIL representatives invited representatives of the IOC in order to demonstrate the attractiveness of the sport, to prove that natural ban is interesting and spectacular. The International Luge Federation has applied for Naturban to be included in the Games. A big step has been taken in this direction. But it’s too early to rest on our laurels. We need to work on this issue until a positive decision is made.
NON-OLYMPIC DESTINIES
(photo: Austrian Naturban team training)
There are many more sports in the world than those listed in the Olympic program. What people don’t do! And rugby, and sambo, and bandy, and many, many others. All these are non-Olympic sports, the list of which looks quite impressive. Why are some of its types are Olympic, while others are not?
There are many reasons, although the International Olympic Committee explains its unwillingness to accept into its ranks those games that can only be called sports with a stretch. Like bowling or billiards. But the practice of recent years shows that there is some slyness in these statements. There are much more reasons for making a decision political, economic.
HISTORY OF BIG MONEY
For example, the story of getting into the Olympic program of youth extreme sport – skateboarding – is not so much sports as financial and economic. The main role here was played by the giant of the sports industry – Nike. Businessmen have calculated that skateboarding fans are a large-scale audience of the future, looking at the world through the prism of modern technologies. Even the Olympic Games future stars of skateparks will soon be watched not on TV, but exclusively with the help of gadgets.
The Russian Skateboarding Federation existed from 2007 to 2011, then ceased its activities and was again accredited by the Russian Ministry of Sports only in 2016, after skateboarding was included in the program of the 2020 Summer Games. Now there is not even an international federation of this sport. Skateboarding, which unexpectedly became Olympic, was taken under its wing by the Roller Sports Federation.
(photo: skateboarding competition demonstration)
– Why skateboarding is interesting for commercial brands that lobby for this issue, – says executive director of the Skateboarding Federation of Russia Alexander Potseluev – because this is the audience of the future. Teenagers go to skateboarding, proud that this is their own, conscious choice, and not the section where their parents enrolled them, for them it’s not even a sport, but a lifestyle – music, travel, even their own fashion. Olympic history for skateboarding was like a bolt from the blue. The skater community is divided into 2 approximately equal camps – supporters of the Olympic future and opponents who claim that this is an attack on the freedom of independent “street children”, which they are not ready to sacrifice even for the sake of an Olympic medal.
In Russia, the leading regions that develop skateboarding are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Rostov, Krasnodar Territory. But, his biography, as a sport of the highest achievements, is being written today from scratch. A federation has been created, a national team has been assembled, relations are being built with the Ministry of Sports and regions. It is difficult so far both in Russia and at the international level, where there is not even a clear idea of how the selection for the Games will take place.
At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, skateboarding will be represented by two disciplines – skateboard street, skateboard park. In each of the disciplines, 20 men and 20 girls will compete for medals. Skateboarding enthusiasts promise a bright spectacle.
WHAT THE SUFFERING DOES NOT ENOUGH
By the way, it is precisely the lack of spectacularity of tournaments that is named among one of the main reasons for the refusal to include one or another sport in a number of Olympic disciplines. It is hard to imagine how a stadium full of spectators will watch with bated breath, for example, a duel between two chess players. Or billiard players. And after all and these kinds of sports aspire to the Olympic history. Of course, all these criteria are quite subjective. For example, curling was recognized as an Olympic sport at 1998 year. But how can you confidently say that curling is more spectacular than bowling?
Representatives of the Non-Olympic Sports Federation do not want to accept their status and continue to fight hard to be included in the Olympics program. It is quite difficult to do this.
ACROBATICS – THE FOUNDATION OF BASICS
The Sports Acrobatics Federation has existed in Russia since 1949, while the international organization appeared only in the 70th. All these years, attempts to achieve Olympic recognition have not stopped. In Russia, today, sports acrobatics is quite popular. The national federation has 45 regional organizations. At the Russian Championships, the number of participants reaches 600.
(photo: Irina Nikitina – Executive Director of the Sports Acrobatics Federation (center))
Irina Nikitina, Executive Director of the Sports Acrobatics Federation:
– Unfortunately, not enough countries have risen under the banner of sports acrobatics to meet the requirements of the IOC. But we strive. We try to help beginners on their sports path, to stimulate their development. Coaches go to training seminars, share experience. We also strive, fulfilling all the same wishes of the IOC, to bring more elements of the show to the competition. To increase the attractiveness for viewers, increase the attractiveness of TV broadcasts. There are also results of our hard work.
Acrobatics introduced to the Junior Olympic Games – 2018 will see the Olympic debut of mixed doubles. This is a big step for us. God forbid, real Games are just around the corner. Our former President Bruno Grandi applied to the IOC and the Olympic Committee decided to give us a chance to prove ourselves. We have already shown ourselves at the European Games in Baku, everything went quite successfully. Now we hope that our new president, Morinari Watanabe, will continue to work in this direction.
In order to include any sport in the program, something else will have to be excluded, the IOC believes. For example, the Big Air discipline in snowboarding, mass start in speed skating, double mixed doubles in curling and team competitions in alpine skiing were added to the program of the 2018 Games. Thus, for the first time in the history of the Winter Olympic Games, 100 sets of medals were played.
The IOC decided to exclude parallel slalom in snowboarding from the 2018 Winter Olympics program in order to include another snowboarding discipline – big air – in the Games program. Moreover, Russia, and even Europe were against such a decision, but the representatives of the American continent supported the idea.
Some sports leave the Olympics for various reasons, be it a small number, not obvious entertainment … Once upon a time, representatives of water-motor sports competed for Olympic awards, once fans of the prototype of tennis – players in jeu-de-paume won Olympic medals. At the Olympics, they played lacrosse, cricket (a sport that uses a bat and a ball, in Russia it is often confused with croquet). There is one Olympic champion in a variety of croquet – rocky (in 1904, 4 Americans fought for medals, Charles Jacobs became the champion). During the 5 Olympiads, athletes competed in tug of war, the same number of times polo players fought for medals. Even baseball, beloved by Americans, was excluded from the circle of the elite. Survived the exclusion and returned golf and rugby.
THE ROAD TO OLYMPUS
How is the procedure for selecting new sports for the Olympic Games programme?
In the main document of the Olympic movement – the charter – in Art. 52 procedure for the inclusion of new sports in the program of the Olympic Games states:
“In order to be included in the program of the Olympic Games, an Olympic sport must meet the following criteria:
– Only sports that are widely played in at least 75 countries on four continents – for men and at least 40 countries on three continents for women;
– Only sports that are widely played in at least 25 countries on three continents can be included in the Winter Olympics program;
– sports are included in the Olympic program at least seven years before the respective Olympic Games, after which no changes are allowed.
NEAR PERSPECTIVES
From the last point it is clear that the nearest changes can only affect the 2024 Summer Olympics and the 2026 Winter Olympics. On September 13, 2017, the IOC, at its 130th session in Lima, announced became Paris.
The capital of the 2026 Games will be determined only in 2019, but the acceptance of official applications will begin this year. So far, they have expressed a desire to host the games: Dresden (Germany) and Barcelona (Spain). Quebec (Canada) and Salt Lake City (USA) are also potential applicants. Salt Lake City has already hosted the 2002 games. Also among the possible hosts of the Winter Games: Reno, Denver, Bozeman, Boston, Anchorage – all of them are in the USA.
With the popularization of the Olympic movement, the number of sports included in the Olympic program has steadily increased. In recent years, the Olympic program has expanded from 15 sports to 25. According to IOC regulations, the number of sports for which Olympic medals are played cannot exceed 28. After baseball and softball were excluded from the Olympic program in 2005 (for the first time since 1936), only 26 sports were represented at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
There were 2 vacancies, for which a fierce struggle unfolded among seven applicants: squash, rugby sevens, karate, softball, baseball, golf and roller sports. But even for those who come so close to the desired goal, there are no guaranteed chances of getting into the Olympics. When choosing a particular sport, the commission pays special attention mainly to three aspects: the accessibility of this sport to all age groups, especially young people, the assessment of the cost of infrastructure and, finally, what efforts are being made by federations to combat doping.
Josef Fendt, President of the International Luge Federation FIL:
– After the IOC’s first application to the International Olympic Committee for the inclusion of naturban in the Olympic Games program was rejected, we discussed the reasons for this decision during several internal meetings with the IOC Sports Department, the media, sports and marketing professionals. We realized that Naturban still has to develop – we need to increase the number of countries cultivating the sport, we need more interest from the media, television and sponsors.
That is why FIL, in recent years, has been organizing many events in these areas, funding the Naturban competitions. Thanks to this, the number of participants in national associations (including among juniors) has significantly increased. FIL currently pays for the production of television programs and live broadcasts of competitions. We have also commissioned our own agencies to provide the best TV broadcast on TV channels.
WHO IS WORTHY?
The IOC is looking at how new sports can complement the existing Olympic program. For example, if martial arts are already widely represented in the program of the Olympic Games, then the inclusion of another similar sport is problematic.
Today there are three winter sports in the Games, representing downhill skiing on the bobsleigh track. These are luge, bobsleigh and skeleton. All of them quite confidently occupy their places in the ranking of the Games. But no one offers to promote naturban at their expense. After all, despite the fact that the IOC is of the opinion that if you need to add someone, you will have to remove someone, the situation here is different. Naturban, although from the luge family, but with cardinal differences. And the most important thing is the track. In-kind, which does not require special costs either when planning the budget for the construction of Olympic facilities, or, which is especially important, when spending national federations on the development of sports in general.
