What equipment do you need to start playing youth lacrosse. How to choose the right lacrosse stick for beginners. Why are mouthguards and goggles crucial for lacrosse players. Which cleats are best for young lacrosse players. What additional gear do lacrosse goalies require.
The Fundamentals of Youth Lacrosse Equipment
Embarking on a lacrosse journey can be exciting, but it’s essential to have the right gear from the start. For young players, particularly girls, the equipment needs are specific and crucial for both performance and safety. This guide will walk you through the essential lacrosse equipment for beginners, ensuring you’re well-prepared to step onto the field.
Core Equipment for Youth Lacrosse Players
To get started in youth lacrosse, you’ll need five key pieces of equipment:
- Girls lacrosse stick
- Mouth guard
- Goggles
- Youth lacrosse cleats
- Lacrosse ball
With these items, a young player is ready to begin their lacrosse adventure. Let’s delve deeper into each piece of equipment to understand its importance and how to choose the right one.
Selecting the Perfect Girls Lacrosse Stick
The lacrosse stick is the most crucial piece of equipment for any player. For girls, it’s important to note that their sticks differ from boys’ sticks, featuring a shallower pocket that affects catching and throwing techniques.
Characteristics of a Girls Lacrosse Stick
When choosing a lacrosse stick for a beginner, what should you look for? A good starter stick typically comes with both the shaft and a pre-strung head sold together. This allows new players to focus on learning the game rather than worrying about stick maintenance.
Some recommended options for beginner girls include:
- STX Lacrosse Fortress 100
- Epoch Pro Mesh Head
- Dragonfly 15 degree pro Mesh
These sticks offer a balance of quality and affordability, perfect for those just starting out in the sport.
The Importance of Protective Gear in Lacrosse
Safety is paramount in any sport, and lacrosse is no exception. Two crucial pieces of protective equipment for youth lacrosse players are mouthguards and goggles.
Choosing the Right Mouthguard
Why is a mouthguard essential in lacrosse? Lacrosse balls are hard, and accidents can happen during play. A good mouthguard protects teeth and soft tissue from potential injuries. Moreover, mouthguards are mandatory for all youth lacrosse games.
When selecting a mouthguard, opt for one specifically sized for youth players. Boil-and-bite mouthguards that can be custom-fitted offer the best comfort and protection. Some top choices include:
- SISU Aero
- Safe Jawz Slim Fit
- Shock Doctor
Selecting Appropriate Lacrosse Goggles
Goggles are another mandatory piece of equipment, protecting players’ eyes during the game. All players on the field must wear lacrosse goggles. It may take some time to get used to wearing them, so it’s important to ensure a proper fit before heading out to play.
Some popular girls lacrosse goggles include:
- Hummingbird Lacrosse Hero
- STX Rookie-S
- STX Lacrosse 4 Site
When choosing goggles, consider both comfort and style, as a good pair can last for several seasons.
Finding the Right Footwear for Lacrosse
Proper footwear is crucial for performance and safety in lacrosse. The sport is played on various surfaces, including grass and turf, which can be slippery. Cleats provide the necessary traction for quick movements and prevent falls.
Types of Cleats for Youth Lacrosse
Are lacrosse cleats different from other sports cleats? While dedicated lacrosse cleats exist, at the youth level, soccer cleats can often suffice. The main difference is that true lacrosse cleats typically have higher ankle support.
Some recommended options for youth lacrosse cleats include:
- Vizari Unisex Cleats
- Nike Youth Lacrosse Cleats
- New Balance Freeze Lacrosse
When choosing cleats, prioritize comfort, fit, and durability to ensure they can withstand the demands of the game.
The Essential Lacrosse Ball: More Than Just Equipment
While it might seem obvious, a lacrosse ball is an indispensable piece of equipment. Having at least one ball at home allows for practice outside of team sessions, helping players improve their skills.
Choosing and Using Lacrosse Balls
When selecting lacrosse balls, consider factors like durability and visibility. Some popular options include:
- Swax Lax Soft Balls
- Franklin Double Ball Se
- Signature Lax Balls
Keeping a ball in your lacrosse backpack ensures you’re always ready for impromptu practice sessions or warm-ups before games.
Specialized Equipment for Lacrosse Goalies
The goalie position in lacrosse requires additional specialized equipment to ensure safety and optimal performance. If a player is considering the goalie position, they’ll need to invest in several extra pieces of gear.
Essential Goalie Equipment
What additional equipment does a lacrosse goalie need? Here’s a comprehensive list:
- Lacrosse helmet
- Goalie chest protector
- Lacrosse goalie gloves
- Lacrosse goalie shin guards
- Mouthpiece (different from field players)
- Lacrosse elbow pads
- Girls youth lacrosse goalie stick
Given the extensive list of equipment, goalies might want to consider investing in a spacious duffle bag to transport all their gear.
Beyond the Basics: Additional Lacrosse Gear to Consider
While the equipment mentioned above covers the essentials for playing youth lacrosse, there are additional items that can enhance comfort, performance, and enjoyment of the sport.
Optional Lacrosse Equipment
What extra gear might benefit a youth lacrosse player? Consider the following:
- Lacrosse backpack or bag: For easy transport of equipment
- Water bottle: To stay hydrated during practices and games
- Athletic tape: For minor equipment adjustments or support
- Extra shoelaces: In case of breakage during play
- Sunscreen: For outdoor practices and games
- Practice jersey: For team scrimmages
While not mandatory, these items can contribute to a more comfortable and prepared lacrosse experience.
Maintaining Your Lacrosse Equipment
Proper care and maintenance of lacrosse equipment not only prolongs its life but also ensures optimal performance and safety. Establishing good habits early on can save money and prevent equipment-related issues during crucial moments of play.
Tips for Lacrosse Equipment Care
How can you keep your lacrosse gear in top condition? Follow these guidelines:
- Clean your stick regularly: Wipe down the shaft and head after each use to prevent dirt buildup.
- Store equipment properly: Keep gear in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew.
- Air out gear: Allow cleats, gloves, and other protective equipment to dry thoroughly after use.
- Check for wear and tear: Regularly inspect equipment for signs of damage or excessive wear.
- Replace when necessary: Don’t hesitate to replace equipment that no longer provides adequate protection or performance.
By following these maintenance tips, you can ensure that your lacrosse equipment remains in excellent condition throughout the season and beyond.
Budgeting for Youth Lacrosse Equipment
Starting any new sport can be a significant investment, and lacrosse is no exception. However, with careful planning and smart shopping, it’s possible to equip a young player without breaking the bank.
Strategies for Cost-Effective Equipment Shopping
How can you save money on youth lacrosse equipment without compromising on quality? Consider these tips:
- Prioritize essential equipment: Focus on the must-have items first, and add optional gear later.
- Look for package deals: Some retailers offer starter kits that include multiple pieces of equipment at a discounted price.
- Consider gently used equipment: For rapidly growing players, second-hand gear can be a cost-effective option.
- Watch for sales: Many sports stores offer discounts during off-seasons or at the end of the school year.
- Invest in quality for long-term items: Splurge on items like sticks that will last several seasons, while economizing on gear that may need frequent replacement.
Remember, the goal is to provide safe, functional equipment that allows your young player to enjoy and excel in the sport of lacrosse.
Adapting Equipment as Players Grow and Improve
As young lacrosse players develop their skills and physically grow, their equipment needs will evolve. It’s important to regularly assess whether current gear still fits properly and meets the player’s changing requirements.
When to Upgrade Lacrosse Equipment
How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your lacrosse gear? Look for these signs:
- Stick length: As players grow taller, they may need a longer stick to maintain proper form.
- Cleats: Feet grow quickly in youth, so cleats may need frequent replacement.
- Protective gear: Ensure goggles and other protective equipment still fit snugly and provide adequate coverage.
- Skill level: As players advance, they may benefit from more specialized equipment designed for higher levels of play.
- Wear and tear: Replace any equipment that shows signs of excessive wear or damage.
By staying attentive to these factors, you can ensure that your young lacrosse player always has the appropriate equipment to support their growth and development in the sport.
The Role of Technology in Modern Lacrosse Equipment
As with many sports, technological advancements have made their way into lacrosse equipment, offering players enhanced performance, comfort, and safety. While not always necessary for beginners, understanding these innovations can help inform future equipment choices as players advance in the sport.
Innovative Features in Lacrosse Gear
What technological advancements are shaping modern lacrosse equipment? Here are some notable innovations:
- Lightweight materials: Carbon fiber and advanced plastics in sticks and protective gear reduce weight without sacrificing durability.
- Moisture-wicking fabrics: Used in uniforms and under-equipment layers to keep players cool and dry.
- Impact-absorbing foams: Incorporated into helmets and body protection to enhance safety.
- Ergonomic designs: Sticks and other equipment tailored to improve grip, control, and overall performance.
- Smart technology: Some high-end equipment now incorporates sensors to track player performance and provide data for improvement.
While these advanced features may not be necessary for beginners, they represent the ongoing evolution of the sport and may become more accessible and relevant as players progress in their lacrosse careers.
Fostering a Love for Lacrosse Beyond Equipment
While having the right equipment is crucial, it’s equally important to nurture a genuine passion for the sport. Encouraging young players to develop their skills, understand the game’s strategy, and embrace the team spirit can significantly enhance their lacrosse experience.
Building a Strong Foundation in Lacrosse
How can you help young players develop a lasting love for lacrosse? Consider these approaches:
- Emphasize fun and enjoyment: Ensure that practices and games remain enjoyable rather than overly competitive.
- Encourage skill development: Focus on mastering fundamental skills before moving to advanced techniques.
- Promote teamwork: Highlight the importance of collaboration and supporting teammates.
- Teach game strategy: Help players understand the tactical aspects of lacrosse to deepen their appreciation for the sport.
- Celebrate progress: Recognize improvements, no matter how small, to boost confidence and motivation.
- Expose them to higher levels of play: Watch college or professional lacrosse games to inspire and educate.
By combining the right equipment with a supportive, educational approach, you can help young players develop not just as athletes, but as well-rounded individuals who appreciate the many facets of lacrosse.

Exceed expectations
My isn’t was not a fan of me getting a machine, but this was low enough that maybe if it didn’t get he would get so upset. I use a jackery 1000 pro to run it which actually increases the speed 1 mph faster than plugged into a regular outlet. Does it hit 50 no but 49 is close enough (pocket radar was used) . The ball feeder only holds 8 balls not 9 so it does go rather quick but the machine works just as good as the jug machine I used in 2006 that a higher one at that time. For the cost and an auto feed for 500 is pretty darn amazing. Light compared to other companies and packs fairly small. We pack it in a wagon with balls bags gloves etc and roll on down to the back fields with ease. Couldn’t be any happier it fits more of my needs that I didn’t even knew I needed such as the reason… so I don’t have to load it into the truck like people would have to do with other brands.
Good price and service
