As a continuation of my last blog, I wanted to take a look at the top four teams and compare their losses to the actual score and whether or not their record could be better. With the season already more than half way done, playoffs are fast approaching but spots in the top four are still up for grabs. Every week matters now and no one is secure. Let’s look at the current top four teams and break down their records.
Rochester Rattlers:
Record: 5-4: With this past weekend’s back-to-back wins against the Long Island Lizards, the Rattlers pulled ahead into fourth place dislodging the Lizards. However, of their four losses, none of them have been close. While the team holds so much talent with players like Ned Crotty and Joel White, they haven’t been able to execute when it comes down to game time. The Rattlers are more than capable of making it all the way to the championship seeing as though they were the team to hand the Cannons their first loss of the season as well as the first to give the Bayhawks their first loss. There is no doubt that they can play the game at the same level as the top two teams however, they need to come ready to go and ready to win.
Denver Outlaws:
Record: 6-3: The Denver Outlaws, it seems, have made their way to the top four entering Championship Weekend since 2006 so why should this year be any different? With the addition of two-time Cascade Rookie of the Week, Chris Bocklet paired up with Brendan Mundorf, and veteran Jesse Schwartzman in between the pipes, they have all the tools to make it… but so does every other team. As the weeks left wind down, the intensity winds up as all the teams still have a shot at making the top four. The Outlaws currently hold third place and are going to have to work hard to maintain that place especially with this week’s game against the Charlotte Hounds who are coming off a big win over first place Bayhawks.
Boston Cannons:
Record: 6-3: The Cannons out-rank the Outlaws because of their win over them however; the Cannons season seems to have hit a very bumpy middle patch when they lost three games in a four-week span. The Cannons have redeemed themselves with an impressive win over Hamilton this past weekend however; they still have a long season ahead of them in order to maintain the second seed and a berth into the playoffs. With last year’s Championship Weekend Defensive Player, Jordan Burke, in the goal and a solid offense led by Paul Rabil and Ryan Boyle it is easy to see the Cannons repeating a second Championship.
Chesapeake Bayhawks
Record: 7-2: The Bayhawks have been on a roll. Other than their first loss in the third week of play, they went on a five game winning streak. It was as if they were unstoppable. Only last week they suffered a loss to 6th place Charlotte in the last 22 seconds of the game. This weekend they take on the Rattlers who are coming off a two game win from last weekend alone. With the addition of Drew Westervelt, former Denver Outlaw, the Bayhawks offense has become a force to reckon with when Westervelt is paired with John Grant Jr., and Kyle Dixon. The only obstacle the Bayhawks will face is finding a steady goalie. While they acquired Kip Turner from the Cannons, the Bayhawks haven’t focused on one goalie all year. Along with Turner, the Bayhawks have been dabbling with Tyler Fiorito and T.C. DiBartolo. The constant goalie change however, could be the secret behind their success because the teams they play always have to guess coming into a game.
As the season winds down, who do you want to see make the playoffs? Send in your comments!

As the 2012 MLL season continues into the second half of play, it is important to keep track of the race towards Championship Weekend. The playoff picture will become clearer as the weeks go on which can have a major impact on how we look at fantasy line-ups. As in other sports, simple math explains when teams have clinched playoff berths and when they are eliminated from postseason contention. With this knowledge, we should be starting players on teams that have the most to play for and therefore the most motivation to play well.
In the upcoming weeks, I plan to start players on teams with a realistic shot at making the playoffs that have not yet clinched postseason berths. I am not suggesting that you start less talented players merely because of their team’s position in the standings but rather to use this information as another tool when choosing which players to start.
Heading into week 10, no team has clinched a playoff berth and no team has been mathematically eliminated from the postseason. However, as seen in the Week 10 Playoff Scenarios, the Ohio Machine can drop to 1-9 if they are swept by the Nationals this weekend and could be eliminated from playoff contention. With this in mind, I expect the Machine stars to come out with strong performances in a must-win situation. I would look for Steele Stanwick, Chazz Woodson and Jim Connolly to be valuable fantasy assets in many week 10 lineups.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Chesapeake Bayhawks sit atop the league standings with a 7-2 record. Although Chesapeake has not yet clinched a playoff berth and cannot do so this weekend against Rochester, they seem like a lock for Championship Weekend. I would keep an eye on the Bayhawks over the next couple of games because their final portion of the schedule may become meaningless if they lock up a postseason spot early. This would have you thinking twice about starting Kyle Dixon and Steven Brooks late in the season.
A team’s record can certainly impact players’ fantasy value so be sure to stay up to date as the MLL playoff picture continues to develop.

It is now Week 3 of the 2012 MLL season and I have to admit my team KsweenTheDream is not living up to its name. The first week I had some great picks, making me forth on the intern’s leaderboard. Then in Week 2 it all came crumbling down. It was my last week of school and with finals going on, setting up my lineup just completely past my mind. However, I am confident that my team name will live up to its hype by the end of the season. This week I have a great lineup and have faith that they will bring me back to the top of the MLL intern league.
For attackmen I picked Matt Danowski, Matt Poskay and Kevin Buchanan. Last week Danowski didn’t perform at 100% but given that he was just coming off his NLL season and was low on sleep I know he’ll be putting up big numbers in Week 3 with a clear head. Last year Danowski led the Lizards offensively, having 23 goals and 11 assists and I’m sure he will keep up the heat with the Hounds this year. Cannons Poskay and Buchanan are easy picks as well, being that Poskay is the Cannons all-time leading scorer and Buchanan is right up there with him, scoring 22 goals last year!
For midfielders I chose Paul Rabil, Stephen Berger and Kyle Dixon in my lineup. Rabil is a no brainer, since in 2011 he was the MLL Offensive Player of the Year and Bud Light Season MVP, not to mention he alone added 9 points to my team in Week 1. Berger was also a big help in Week 1, adding 6.5 points to my total. I did not put Dixon in my lineup for Week 1 but he’s in for me this week. Last week Dixon broke the MLL 2-pointer record (34 career 2-point goals) and he was named MLL Offensive Player of the Week. My offense is stacked and I’m expecting them to rack up some major points for me in Week 3.
For defensemen I chose to play Joel White and Brodie Merrill this week. Joel White finished 2nd in the league last season for ground balls with 71. Who wouldn’t start Merrill on defense? He is easily the best defenseman in the league and was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Year for the 6th consecutive year last year. Looking at my lineup I’d have to say my team will no longer be at the bottom of the ranks after this week!
SCORE: 32

After a tough opening week, I came back in Week 2 with a strong lineup which gave me some much needed offensive production. My star player this week was Chesapeake’s midfielder Kyle Dixon, his career game consisted of 3 goals, 3 assists and two 2-point goals. Dixon’s performance moved him ahead of Paul Rabil to take the lead for total points this season. Dixon also became the MLL leader in career 2 point goals. My key offensive players this week were the Boston Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle (1 goal and a generous 5 assists) and of course midfielder Paul Rabil (2 goals and 2 assists). Chazz Woodson of the Ohio Machine scored 2 goals this week, one of his goals should be worth 5 points because it managed to be a #2 play on ESPN’s Sportscenter.
