Nerses: Canada’s most athletic family?! – Oil Boom – Blogs
This post was written by a Sports.ru user, every fan can start writing (you can do it here).
They say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and more accurately than for the family of Edmonton defenseman Darnell Nurse, this expression probably does not exist for anyone. Instead of “will the second child be a successful athlete?” the question was “what sport should he choose!?” While no one is surprised by the guy’s success in hockey, everyone may wonder how the boy managed to spend all his time on the ice in skates, instead of wearing sneakers or boots. Because when it comes to sports, the Ners family tree is extraordinarily productive.
Darnell’s dad, Richard, was selected by the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the third round of the Canadian Football League entry draft in 1990. He spent the first 8 years of his professional career as a wide receiver at Hamilton and ended it with 5 seasons as a back to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Through marriage, Darnell has another paternal relative whose name will not be a mystery to many in North America. Donovan McNabb was drafted 2nd overall in the 1999 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles after a successful football career at Syracuse University, where he met varsity athlete and his future wife, Raquel Nurse, Darnell’s aunt.
After his college career, McNabb went to the NFL, where he played 13 seasons, including 11 with the Eagles, which he led to the National Football Conference East Division title four times in a row, was the conference champion five times, and reached the final game of the season once (Super Bowl). He ended his career in 2009 with 3,469 rushing yards, which ranks him 6th among all NFL quarterbacks in history. Darnell could take full advantage of having such a famous sports relative. He rode the train with Donovan during the off-season when he was only 13.
“It was great. An experience that stays with me to this day. It was great to feel the atmosphere of training real NFL players, and at the same time to see how much work it takes to stay at this level. I think it’s great experience that I now have.” Darnell says. Looking at the examples of all the men in the Darnell family, it’s safe to say that football is the main sporting event for Nurses. But this is only at first glance, until you meet the female half of the family, which is completely passionate about basketball.
Darnell’s mother, Cathy, was an outstanding basketball player during her time on the McMaster varsity team. And his aunt Raquel, whom we have already mentioned, was twice recognized as the most valuable player on the team at Syracuse University. It is safe to say that the basketball talent did not miss a single generation. Kathy’s older daughter and Darnell’s older sister, Tamika (28), played basketball at the University of Oregon and Bowlin Green State University, while being on the Canadian youth team in 2004 and 2005. She also played in the World Youth Championship (U- 19) FIBA 2005.
And now, Kia, the youngest of three children in the family. Nineteen-year-old Kia was able to build an impressive career even before she was 20. She has many achievements to her credit, including second place in the FIBA American Women’s Basketball Championship in 2013. And another participation in the following 2014, where she, as the youngest member of the team, was able to score an average of 7 points per game and lead the team to the 5th final place. She is now a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, where last season, her first season, she helped the UConn Huskies women’s team win their third straight NCAA Division 1 championship and was named the 2014-15 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year. But what she did last summer is simply impressive.
Kia competed at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto with the Canadian national team and led them to their first ever championship after beating the Americans 81-73 in the final. Kia became the star of the match with 33 points and the MVP of the entire tournament. As a token of her accomplishments, she was the flag bearer for the national team at the closing ceremony of the games. After winning the Pan American Games, Kia and the Canadian women’s team were undefeated in the American Women’s Basketball Championship (FIBA), won the tournament held in Edmonton and secured tickets to the Rio Olympics. Her brother Darnell says he will definitely go to Brazil to support his sister this summer.
With such achievements in football and basketball, it would not be surprising that Darnell would first try these sports before getting into hockey, but it was not: “In general, besides hockey, I once played I’m often asked about how I got into hockey with such a family’s sporting accomplishments, but my dad put me on skates from a very young age, as soon as it was possible. And I never wanted to give it up.” Darnell admits. “Despite the fact that I played lacrosse and hockey, I never had a problem of choice. Hockey was my favorite pastime and my favorite pastime, but at the age of 13-14, I decided that I wanted this to become my profession.” Ners continues. He is now in his second season with Edmonton and the first in which he has stayed in the NHL for a long time. Looking back on his draft day, Nurse probably remembers two things, one of which is family.
“Being on stage with the club, in front of the lenses of the entire league, was great. But it was even better to be able to celebrate with my family. We grew up together and everyone’s passion for sports made us an extremely competitive group. This sports environment in which we grew up in childhood helped all of us in our current successes.” – says the young man. “From my family, I’m first on the ice. But I also have a cousin, Sarah, who plays hockey at the University of Wisconsin. We’re the first hockey players in our entire gang!” In fact, just a day after Darnell received the gold medal for winning the 2015 Youth World Championships in Toronto, Cousin Sarah won her gold with the Canadian junior team by beating the Swedes to win the Nations Cup in Germany. And in two years, she already won the World Youth Championship in Finland with the Canadian women’s team (U-18).
Sarah is in her third year at the University of Wisconsin and hopes to earn her place on the Canadian women’s team for the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. While Sarah and Darnell may be the first in the family to excel in hockey, Sarah has a younger brother, Elijah Nurse (18), who, like his cousin Darnell, was drafted in the 13th round of the OHL Entry Draft by the Sue-San -Marie Greyhounds”, in which Darnell spent his entire youth career. People are accustomed to immediately share big news if such appear. And although Darnell has not yet had great success in the NHL, he already knows who he will call first: “My parents sacrificed a lot so that now I can play hockey at such a high level. They will be the first people I call. And, of course , younger sister, Kia. We’re only a year apart, so we’re like twins. She’ll definitely be one of the first people I call. And so will I. ”
Looking back at the boys’ recent success, it seems like time for family is running out, but Darnell says it will always be a priority, even if it means throwing the ball into the basket with her sister. “We sometimes play 21. And I always win (ed. – laughs). Huh, one-on-one? I won’t get involved!” Unlike basketball and football, hockey is still getting used to the Nurses, but Edmonton fans are already cheering on the progress and promise of their No. 25s. And Darnell himself every time goes on the ice with the most important and valuable thing he has – the name of the family on his back.
