The next wave of high school talent was on full display at the nation’s premier winter showcase, NLF at IMG. We got a peek at what is to come from the young bucks in the 2025 and 2026 classes and they didn’t disappoint. A weekend filled with college-level instruction, high-level tournament play, and an ultra-competitive culture – these future stars were able to dial in their skills to prepare them for an upcoming spring campaign.

William Hayes, LSM, New Canaan (Conn.) / Eclipse
Hayes was a force all over the field for champion Team 3, collecting MVP honors in the process. The pole from one of the top Connecticut public schools was constantly physical in coverage and showed terrific footwork and positioning./cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/60794897/LXM18_PENN_037_.0.jpg)
Pair that with a good frame for the position and a good stick, he was dominant throughout and locked down opposing midfielders, particularly in the final. Hayes also stood out on faceoff wings.

Patrick Hiebert, defense, Brunswick (Conn.) / Team 91 LI
Hiebert started building his case to be the best defenseman in the ‘25 class. Hiebert’s combination of sheer size and aggressiveness makes him known among his attackmen counterparts. The ones that are unfortunate enough to be matched up against Hiebert don’t seem to enjoy having the ball in their sticks for long. Hiebert’s senior-like confidence in his play will be sure to earn him some quality time this spring.
Kuttin and Ortlieb served as the backbone of a loaded Team 3 offensive group that dominated all weekend. The duo was able to exploit ball-watching defensemen with laser-like feeds and draw slides on command to generate offense. It was this tandem that put up video game numbers in the championship to take home the crown – Ortlieb with four goals and three assists to go with Kuttin’s two goals and three assists.
Kuttin is a cerebral QB type who feeds as well or better than he shoots. Ortlieb is a lights-out finisher. Neither might see the field right away as freshmen because they play for two of the best teams in the country, but make no mistake about it, they’re future superstars.
Easily the most dominant ‘25 face-off athlete at the event, Peterman was able to consistently beat his opponents to the clamp and secure the ball. Throughout tournament play, Peterman showed his versatile exiting ability that allowed him to find space and gain his Team 5 squad another possession. Uncharacteristic of many face-off specialists, Peterman also demonstrated great ball-handling skills that resulted in little to no turnovers.
Skeean is a perfect example of which direction the LSM position is going – excellent on-ball defense on down-hill dodging middies, wicked good stick skills, and a knack for running transition and scoring goals.
The lefty pole seemingly scooped up any loose ball within his reach and got the ball going the other way. The Georgia native is sure to be one of the premier players in the state in the coming years.
Ethan Train, goalie, Noble & Greenough (Mass.) / Laxachusetts
Part of a loaded ‘25 goalie group, Train emerged as one of the most solid tenders at the event. Train, who helped backstop Laxachusetts to an NLF Summer Kickoff title in June, set himself apart from the rest with ball-tracking ability for short-range shots, demanding style of communication, and crisp outlet passes that led to transition offense. These abilities, plus a desire to learn and improve, have helped him establish himself as one of the premier ’25 goalies.

The legendary Vsevolod Bobrov was one of those who helped make national ice hockey first steps
The first steps of national ice hockey cannot be imagined in isolation from the personality of Vsevolod Bobrov.
Many of the galaxy of prominent Soviet hockey players who saw Bobrov play on the ice called him the most outstanding Russian player in history. Despite the fact that in this most multifaceted and great history of our hockey there were such blocks and giants as Yakushev, Kharlamov, Mikhailov, Maltsev, Fetisov, and further, as they say, according to the list. But the legends about “Sevka, who did everything he wanted on the lawn and on the ice”, over the years only take on the character of some kind of fairy tale stories, despite the fact that even in the endless World Wide Web during the day with fire you can’t find not only the matches themselves , but also cuts of games 1940-1950s. “I am glad that I saw Bobrov on the ice with my own eyes. He is an outstanding athlete. I believe that he can safely be included in the top ten strongest players in the history of world hockey,” said Maurice Richard, who is considered an icon, about the first Soviet hockey player, holder of the Order of Lenin Canadian hockey.
And three-time Olympic champion Vitaly Davydov admitted: “My generation came to the national team after Vsevolod Bobrov and his friends, who gilded the image of Soviet hockey, which had just risen to its feet, and we added diamonds and emeralds to this crown.”

Even now, decades later, commentators exclaim: “The puck is hammered in Bobrovsky style.” So Vsevolod Bobrov really drove the discs into the web of the hockey goal, after a dashing breakthrough behind them, freeing himself from the guardianship of the defender and plunging the puck with a stick in one hand into the opposite corner. Vsevolod Bobrov, and this is also a unique record, the only athlete in history who also performed at summer (1952 years old), and at the Winter (1956) Olympic Games. Moreover, at these Games he was the captain of two teams – football and hockey. Gagarin pucks in Rus’, so aptly wrote in his long ode – a dedication to Bobrov – Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
It was Bobrov who, as a senior coach, took the USSR national team to Canada in 1972 for matches with local professionals.
According to the legend of Soviet weightlifting Yuri Vlasov, in the late 1940s, after hitting the board, Bobrov had a heart attack, but the courageous player attributed everything to an injury and did not go to the hospital. All my life I suffered from heart pains, especially when I became a coach. Anatoly Tarasov and Viktor Tikhonov taught our teams to always be the first
In the history of Soviet and Russian hockey there were many great, brilliant, successful coaches. But the figures of Anatoly Tarasov and Viktor Tikhonov stand apart.

In sports, the main thing is the result, and there is no other place than the first. This is Tarasov’s principle, which he instilled not only in several generations of hockey players, but also in all of us who consider Soviet hockey the best in the world.
Hard numbers: together with Arkady Chernyshev, Tarasov set an unsurpassed record: for nine years in a row (1963-1971), the USSR national ice hockey team under their leadership became the champion in all international tournaments.
And the idea of a Super Series with Canadian pros 1972 years old is also his, Tarasovskaya. It is a pity that Tarasov did not go to Canada for the Super Series, because he was considered “unreliable”. Vladislav Tretiak in an interview with “RG” recalled how Tarasov knew how to motivate:
– It was in the 71st year. In the decisive match we lost to the Swedes after the first period – 1:2. Tarasov went into the locker room and sang the song “Black Raven” at first quietly, then louder. And it helped. The game ended – 6:3, and we became world champions. Tarasov was a great psychologist, and for him there was first a team, all together, and then a personality.

Another person who was loved, hated, but always considered with his opinion – Viktor Vasilievich Tikhonov. A modest Dynamo defender turned into a brilliant coach. With his charisma, excellent understanding of the game, the tough, sometimes cruel will that he imposes on his players, he stood out even against the background of the mighty galaxy of Russian colleagues who confidently stood at the hockey boards at that happy time for us.
He was branded ruthless. Formed national teams without any discounts for past merits. The stars not invited to the team were offended, the newspapers were full of reproaches, the fans could whistle, call them “boa” for always tightly tied tie. And only then did the ill-wishers notice that he, Tikhonov, extinguished the tired stars at the right time – for them and for the national team. The heroes left in their prime, and not already won back empty flowers.
And this exacting cruelty attracted the gold metal. Viktor Vasilievich did not recognize any duets and other triumvirates in coaching. He was responsible for everything and everyone. He won the Olympics three times, the world championship eight times, his, Tikhonovsky, CSKA won the national championships 13 times.
Particularly striking was our Olympic victory in 1992 in Albertville. It only remained to be horrified by the post-Soviet confusion in which the whole, not only hockey, team gathered on the move, performing without an anthem and a flag.
But with a brilliant coach, who, forgive me, other hockey players, in fact, one Bykov’s troika (and what a troika – Bykov and Khomutov) won unexpectedly, and how confidently, first place.
Yes, he was accused of inflexibility. Why doesn’t he release the best Soviet, then Russian players in the NHL? Arrogant agents, such as Sergei Levin, came from there, beckoned our unspoiled guys, blasphemed the head coach, and the clubs that prepared the guys got a skinny zilch. It was against this that Viktor Vasilyevich fought to the last.
At times there was a howl. Why Tikhonov drives the players? Such huge loads are not needed. And what? Loads are reduced. As well as sports results.
He was accused of dictatorship, in the undivided rule of CSKA. But after the departure of Viktor Vasilyevich, regardless of whether money was poured into the Red Machine or not, the club rarely remained a flagship. In short, without him our hockey became worse. And Tikhonov experienced it painfully.
On Vagankovo he rested not far from his comrades and like-minded people. And we really miss Viktor Vasilyevich. The modern hockey generation is indebted to him. The best way to pay back is to do at the 2022 Winter Olympics what he did at 1984th, 1988 and 1992. Tikhonov believed that under certain conditions, including the manifestation of sports fanaticism by hockey players, this is achievable.

9 Olympic victories on account of our team. Only Canadians have the same number.
6 three-time Olympic champions are known in the history of world hockey. These are Anatoly Firsov, Vitaly Davydov, Viktor Kuzkin, Alexander Ragulin and Vladislav Tretiak.
27 victories at the world championships were won by the national team (USSR/Russia).
The same number of our most principled rivals – Canadians. Note that the USSR national team took part in 34 world championships and never returned home without medals.
9 world championships in a row, with 1963 to 1971, the USSR team won. This is a record winning streak that has not been beaten so far.

Tretiak is the best player of the 20th century
The history of hockey knows no shortage of outstanding personalities. It is all the more honorable that the International Federation recognized our Vladislav Tretiak as the best player of the 20th century. But if you look closely – did she have a choice?

The current president of the Russian Hockey Federation has become world champion ten times, and in total he has 13 medals from world championships. Four more sets of Olympic awards (three of them of the highest standard) make Tretiak the most titled hockey player in history.
Vladislav Aleksandrovich burst into the national team at the age of 17. He took the first “gold” of the world championships in 1970, the last – in 1983.
He shone in the famous 1972 Super Series and was most directly involved in the humiliation of the Canadians in the 1981 Canada Cup final, which ours won 8-1.

Alas, his playing career officially ended 16 years ago, but Bure is still one of the brightest and most beloved hockey players. Playing Tempest was as breathtaking as driving at breakneck speed. In the end, it was not for nothing that Pavel was nicknamed the Russian rocket. He was also admired by the main player in the history of North American hockey, Wayne Gretzky.
As Bure himself said, Gretzky was ready to extend his career for another year if the Russian was traded to the New York Rangers in 1999. It didn’t fit. Bure eventually moved to the Rangers, but three years later. And with Gretzky, he ended up playing on the same line, but only in the All-Star Game.

The career of the Russian rocket itself turned out to be disappointingly short. Due to constant problems with his knees, Pavel Bure ended hockey at the age of 32. Incredibly early: you understand this especially well when looking at Alexander Ovechkin, who shines at a much more respectable age. But even in the allotted time, Bure managed a lot. He won the National Hockey League regular season top scorer title twice and nearly led Vancouver to the Stanley Cup. In the Russian national team, his finest hour struck at the Winter Games-1998 in Nagano. Five goals against the Finns in the semi-finals of the Olympic tournament have long been included in the treasury of domestic and world hockey.

17-year-old Michkov is already breaking records
No matter what happens in Russian hockey, talents in our country will never run out. The next one is on its way. Matvey Michkov is only 17 years old, and he is compared with might and main to superstars like Alexander Ovechkin and Nikita Kucherov. And not without reason: after all, Matvey has already broken some of the records of the mentioned players.

St. Petersburg’s SKA spotted the child prodigy last year, poaching him from Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. And the whole country has already learned about it. To begin with, Michkov, as part of SKA-1946, rewrote several records of the Youth Hockey League (MHL). In January, he broke the under-17 goal scoring record, and in February he surpassed the goalscoring record in the same age category. Remarkably, the previous owner of both achievements was Nikita Kucherov.
Matvey continued to perform feats in the national team, becoming the leader of the national team at the 2021 Youth World Championship. Ours took silver there, but Michkov definitely has nothing to reproach himself with. In seven matches, he scored 16 (12+4) points and won the title of top scorer and sniper of the tournament. And the organizers recognized him as the most valuable player and the best striker of the World Cup.
Recently, our illustrious veteran Valery Kamensky said that we need to talk less about Michkov, but what if he has already burst into the main national team. And he began to rewrite records there too. Having played for the national team at the Karjala Cup at the age of 16 years and 11 months, Matvey became its youngest debutant. And in a match with the Swedes, Michkov also scored the “youngest” goal of the Russian team. But how! In lacrosse style, putting the puck into the net on the hook of the stick from behind the goal. Last Friday, September 9, General Motors notified the owners of about 3.64 million vehicles of its production to reflash the software of the sensor and diagnostic module (SDM). The cause is a software error that prevents the airbags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying in the event of an accident.
According to the company’s notice, the problem occurs “under certain rare circumstances, if the collision was preceded by an event that affected the dynamics of the vehicle.” What is meant by “rare circumstances”, General Motors does not specify, however, according to Reuters, due to a software error, one person has already died and three others were seriously injured.
The problem affects the following brands of vehicles manufactured by General Motors:
2014-2016 Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet SS and Spark EV;
Chevrolet Corvette, Trax, Caprice PPV and Silverado 1500; Buick Encore and GMC Sierra 1500 2014-2017;
